Out of blue I decided to make a list of reasons why you should read Fruits Basket the manga if you only watched the anime. I could have simply written ‘In the manga you’ll get the COMPLETE story without that abrupt ending and the director’s strange idea of humour’, but i ended by writing this. So, my reasons:

Character development for pretty much everyone

Tohru’s character not being reduced to ‘excessively kind naive girl who understands and accepts everyone’

Everyone’s backstories (not only the Sohmas - Kyoko’s, Hana’s and Uo’s, for instance, helping to understand characters’ relationship with each other and their attitude to different things)

Shigure’s true nature and intentions (yes i made a separate point for this)

True nature of the curse (+space for reflections about it)

A certain HAT. (+more beautiful foreshadowing)

2 more zodiac members who are involved with some dark secrets of the Sohma family

The student council SCHOOL DEFENSE SQUAD (#squad_goals)

And also Tohru ans co’s homeroom teacher Mayuko. In short, school life in Furuba is also entertaining.

Una Sorta Cinderella as the most hilarious school stage play ever. Also, it’s not only your average obligatory shoujo school play but an extremely important occasion for certain confessions (important for the plot) to be made.

Ayame and Yuki managing to reduce the abyss © Tohru interactions. +Ayame saving the day when the drama concentration if too high to survive.

The older Sohmas (Mabudachi trio, Kureno, Akki) and especially Kazuma getting more screen time (my personal reason, i apologize)

A literal cliffhanger before the pay-off (I bet you’ll have forgotten a small detail pointed out in the first volume when you get to this part in one of the final volumes)

True nature of the main ‘love triangle’ (Takaya deserves a special award for this turn imho)

Supporting characters that you first (probably) thought were introduced just for fun getting development too (the problems touched in their stories are wisely connected with the main characters and the main plotline)

Overall everything is more serious and darker than in the anime. I mean, no unexplained comedy stuff lacking logic - the comedy and the drama are cleverly connected to each other and are both needed for the plot to progress.

Takaya being a gorgeous and clever author who had everything planned and fooled us when it was necessary to make the story even better.

Thank you, I’m done. Of course there are a lot of other reasons why i love Furuba and Takaya, but it’s for the next time. :’)

Hi, my 5year old son and I have just watched the episode of Arthur in which you feature. Once it ended I told him that I have several of your books, he then patted my arm sympathetically and replied "I'm sorry Mummy, but he's not real! Its just a story!"
