Hi I just wanted to ask if you knew what pedal mitch used for solos like "She" to obtain that fuzz/octave tone? Thanks!
Hello! I'm really sorry but I genuinely have no idea. I don't have any clear view of them

Harry Styles’ ‘As It Was’ is Nakedly Vulnerable — and Unlike Anything He’s Done Before
The first single from Harry’s House is a both a straight-from-the-heart cry and an irresistible dance-floor challenge
By
ROB SHEFFIELD
Harry Styles has dropped his hotly anticipated new song “As It Was.” It’s the lead single and video from his upcoming third album, Harry’s House, due May 20 — the first music he’s released since his 2019 blockbuster, Fine Line. It’s one of the most emotionally powerful songs he’s ever done. He sings about facing up to personal transitions, with the chorus “In this world it’s just us/You know it’s not the same as it was.”
It’s a daring change-up for Styles, unlike anything he’s done before musically. He kicked off his first two album eras with grand statements, “Sign of the Times” and “Lights Up.” But “As It Was” is more nakedly vulnerable, a straight-from-the-heart cry that’s also an irresistible dance-floor challenge. It begins with children’s voices calling “Come on, Harry, we wanna say good night to you!”
But the song goes deep into feelings of isolation and melancholy. The lyrics are a plea: “Answer the phone/Harry, you’re no good alone/Why are you sitting at home on the floor?/What kind of pills are you on?”
“As It Was” swerves into Eighties-style synth-pop, in the vein of A-Ha or Depeche Mode. The synth hook sounds like warped steel drums, with tolling chimes at the end — Styles is credited with playing “tubular bells.” His vocals are bittersweet, almost piercingly poignant, with the intimate vibe of a journal entry. Yet it also feels like it’s about a relationship, full of secret confessions shared between two people — the first time he’s ever started off an album era with a love song.
It’s the first taste from his astounding new Harry’s House, which is even better than you hope it is. The 13-track Harry’s House will be released globally on May 20, on vinyl, CD, and cassette, available on preorder now. The vinyl will include exclusives like Sea Grass Green (on Harry’s website) and Target Translucent Yellow; there’s also a CD photobook with 32 new photos. Later this month, he’s headlining the Coachella Festival, on the weekends of April 15 and 22, where he’ll debut “As It Was” live. This summer he returns to the road for the international stretch of Love On Tour, starting June 11 in Glasgow with Mitski, and stretching into December.
The “As It Was” video evokes the song’s sense of personal conflict, with Styles and a partner literally running in circles, fitting for sentiments like “Gravity’s holding me back.” It was filmed in London by Ukrainian director Tanu Muino. As she says in a statement, “Shooting him was bittersweet, as it was one of the happiest days of my life, but on the second day of the shoot, my country Ukraine was invaded, so you can imagine the insane emotions we had while shooting. Me and my team from Ukraine poured so much love into this video, and you can see it onscreen.”
Styles wrote “As It Was” with his trusty longtime collaborators Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, who both produced. Guitar wingman Mitch Rowland is on drums along with Harpoon. As Styles told Rolling Stone when Fine Line came out, “If you’re going in with session writers or something, you spend one or two days there, and there is no way that person really cares about your album as much as you do. Because they’re into something else tomorrow.” That’s why he’s so unusually devoted to his team. “We’ll bond over music we love and things we’re going through. It’s not like there’s one person in the group that’s like, ‘Well, no, I don’t talk about that. I just make beats.’”
When Paul McCartney — one of Styles’ main heroes — released his solo debut, he summed it up as “Home, Family, Love.” The title and cover of Harry’s House seem to evoke similar themes, as does the cryptic You Are Home site, with daily messages like “Whisper to your houseplants/Sing to your neighbors.” The gatefold to the vinyl album, as teased on his website yesterday, has a very Linda McCartney-style photo of domestic life: a garden breakfast table set for two, with coffee, eggs, and an orange. (In case you’re following the Harry Fruit Universe, there’s another one to check off your list.)
Styles has always made a point of mixing pop glam with raw emotion. As he told Rolling Stone in the Fine Line era, “It’s all about having sex and feeling sad.” That perfectly describes “As It Was” — the moment when being in love forces you to confront some of your own baggage, the feelings you usually hide from yourself. “As It Was” comes out almost exactly five years after he began his solo career. (He dropped “Sign of the Times” on April 7, 2017.) Yet it sounds like an artist who’s just getting started. “As It Was” is more than a creative peak — it’s a fearless leap into a new era.

Harry Styles has used his solo career to lean into the music of bygone decades before, with his first two albums heavily drenched in the rock singer-songwriter stylings of the ’70s. His new single, too, has a flair for music as it was — but it’s far from a rerun of those previous albums. “As It Was,” released late Thursday, sounds like it has its roots in the synth-pop of the 1980s. You could even say he’s vaguely in a Depeche mode… or having an A-ha moment.
It may not sound anything but contemporary to younger listeners, though, who may think that, if anything, he’s adopting the style of the Weeknd, whose “Blinding Lights” also looked to some of those same catchy electro-pop bands for inspiration.
But enough about a flock of inspirations. What may really blind some fans is the “As It Was” music video and its generous offerings of Styles’ torso, in a tank top and eventually without it. There will be a fine line between who’s having a better Thursday night, his still predominantly female fandom or gay Twitter (or even just neutral tattoo enthusiasts).
Styles indulges in the great pop tradition of calling himself out by name in the lyrics, singing in the second verse, “Answer the phone / Harry, you’re no good alone / Why are you sitting at home on the floor / What kind of pills are you on?” Earlier, the track begins with a child’s voice imploring, “C’mon Harry, we want to see goodnight to you!” The lyrics are distinctly less cheerful than the music throughout, with calls that go unconnected and doorbells going unanswered. It’s like a quarantine-era mood squeezed into a post-pandemic synth banger.
There is human connection in the video, though, as Styles, wearing a glittery red jumpsuit, meets up with a female companion in a counterpart blue one-piece for a pas de deux atop a spinning platform, before she gets spun off. They reconvene in what looks like a swimming pool with concentric circles of diving boards, and Styles doffs his shirt, though the mood stays cool without ever completely heating up. In the end, there’s a musical payoff, at least, to the “Ringin’ the bell / And nobody’s coming to help” lines, as actual bells give the song a happy-sounding musical ending, even if the two principals seem destined to keep spinning separately.
“As It Was” is the first single from “Harry’s House,” which the singer announced only three days prior will be coming with a May 20, 2022 release date.

Hi, I wanted to ask about the guitar that Mitch gave Harry, is it the same one that Freddie Mercury used on Live Aid? A 1983 Fender Blonde Telecaster specifically. I also wanted to know if you can explain Mitch's guitar solo on "She", which I think is great. Greetings from Argentina!!
Hello anon! My greetings to you from Greece :)
The guitar Mitch gave to Harry in their guitar exchange is a 1970's Telecaster in Arctic White. I'm unfortunately not a very experienced guitar player and I've also never held or played either guitar, so I can't break down the accoustic differences between the two.
I'm not sure what there is to explain about the solo. There didn't seem to be much concious thought or a plan behind it.
Harry had a short interview with Rob Sheffield for Rolling Stone on the day Fine Line was released, just before the concert. In it he had a "song-by-song guide to Fine Line" with some stories about the creative process. This is what he had to say about she:
“Mitch played that guitar when he was a little, ah, influenced,” Styles says. “Well, he was on mushrooms, we all were. We had no idea what we were doing. We forgot all about that track, then went back later and loved it. But Mitch had no idea what he did on guitar that night, so he had to learn it all over from the track.
So there you have it! Just improvisation. He found himself high on mashrooms with a guitar in his arms. Just really went for it, and then had to learn it all from the start once he sobered up and they decided to use it.

Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 in Translucent Red ($2,000+)
During hia performance of Watermelon Sugar for the 2021 Grammys, Harry is accompanied by English musician Dev Hynes on the bass. This bass, passed down to Harry's art director Molly Hawkins by her father, is a StingRay 4, possibly a 2003 model.
First manufactured in 1976 by Music Man , the StingRay became the compnay’s first bass on the market and featured three tuners on the left and one on the bottom right of the headstock (often referred to as 3+1), unlike Fender’s already famous 6 on-a-side style. It was the first production to feature a battery powered circuit, which allowed boosting specific frequences.
Another distinctive element of this guitar is the oval, in this case black, pickguard, and the boomerang-like control plate with a 3-band equalizer. The bass boasts a humbucking pickup and a 7.5 Rosewood fretboard.
A notable track featuring the StingRay is Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer, performed by Tony Levin.

At the same time, there was an electric guitar solo being heard on one of the most-played songs in the U.S. Harry Styles’ “Adore You,” which has logged 1.1 million radio spins in 2020, according to Mediabase, and has been streamed more than 400 million times, per Alpha Data, features the playing of Kid Harpoon (real name: Tom Hull), Styles’ friend and producer, who handled the guitar parts for much of the Brit’s excellent “Fine Line” album, released in Dec. 2019. As it turns out, the melody of the solo, which also serves as the bridge to “Adore You,” was first hummed by Styles for Hull to emulate. “I did it with my mouth into a microphone,” Styles told Variety in October. “And then Tom sent me this video trying to get it to sound the same. He spent a couple of hours getting it.”
Why include a guitar solo when most pop songs would never dare? “I feel it’s kind of like ‘La La Land’ saving jazz — only for rock ‘n’ roll,” Styles cracked when posed with the question. But more seriously speaking, Variety‘s Hitmaker of the Year added: “I’m not a spearheader of the movement, like, ‘Let’s bring back guitars.’ There’s plenty of times when [a song] doesn’t sound better with a guitar, and you don’t use it. But a lot of the references I grew up with have guitars; and it’s the first instrument I played, so it makes sense that I would like the sound of them more. I don’t think the guitar is dying. Guitars are great and always have been.”

Fun fact - the name Dopyera gave to his resonators came from Slovak (his mother language) and it was the word 'dobro' - which means goodness or kindness.
It is also the name of the company he established with his brother, Dobro Manufacturing Company, and short for Dopyera Brothers! 🥳🥳 But I do find the Slovak reference sweeter though.

Fender Top Hat Resonator ($350+)
During his accoustic performance of Cherry for Vogue Magazine, Harry is seen using the a Fender resonator guitar.
We previously saw this type of guitar mentioned when looking into the instruments of Fine Line, more specifically the slide guitar Mitch was credited with playing.
The resonator was developed in the early 20th century (mid 1920's) by John Dopyera. Dopyera's purpose was to create a guitar whose volume could compete with other band instruments, in a time where electric guitars didn't yet exist. His experiments produced metal bodied instruments with up to four resonator cones composed of different metals.
Resonators either come with as square necked, played in lap steel type, or  round-necked, like Harry's, played as both as a regular guitar or lap steel style. Their construction, featuring either the metal body and/or the cone makes them instantly identifiable.
Harry's Fender features a C-shaped mahogany body and maple top, with dual screened soundholes. It has a distinct handspun Easter European Continental aluminum cone.
It has a 16 inch 20-fret Rosewood fingerboard, a bone nut, and Telecaster type headstock. The guitar has a satin black finish, and white body binding.

Gibson Memphis ES-335 - Cherry Red ($3,000 - $5,000)
Harry recently donated a Gibson Memphis Electric Spanish-335 in Cherry Red to the MusiCares Charity Relief Auction, which aims to support artists in need. Proceeds from the auction will be used to assist artists who have been hit by the ongoing pandemic.
Originally introduced in 1958 by Gibsonwith dotted neck markers, the ES-335 is the worlds first commercially sold semi hollow-body, or semi-accoustic guitar.
The electric or semi-accoustic guitars that came from this era were the manufacturer’s attempts to create a guitar whose amplified volume could compete with other instruments, particularly within an ensemble.
This “block neck” ES-335 stands at 24.75 inches and weighs in at 4.645lbs or 2.1 kg. The centerblock running through the guitar's body is maple and the guitar features a  C shaped neck and 22 frets. It has a distinct double-cutaway construction and f-holes over the chamber.
It boasts two MHS (Memphis Historic Spec) humbacker pickups for the neck and bridge, with a locking stop bar tailpiece. The guitar features four controls. A lead volume, lead tone, rhythm volume and rhythm tone. It has a VOS Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish. VOS or Vintage Organic Spec means the guitar is finished with nitrocellulose laquer, and then artificially aged to have a more vintage look.
Harry hasn’t used this guitar in public performances.
You can hear what the guitar sounds like here.
