The Hardest Part of Letting Go is Knowing When to Walk Away: A Farewell
"... The hardest part of letting go is knowing when to walk away..." That's one of my favorite lines from one of the many amazing songs that Paco Estrada has written, and in this circumstance, taking it out of context, I feel it sums things up quite well for me.
It's been a year and nine months since I posted anything of substance (original) on here. Free time is sparse these days, and has been for some time. Hell, I wanted and intended to do reviews of what wound up being the final concerts I went to in the summer of 2019, yet that never even happened.
So now comes the difficult part of fully admitting to myself that The Music Enthusiast is done. It has been for a while now, and I hate that, because I dislike it when bands just fizzle out. No proper farewell, nor even a mention of goodbye, they just vanish. It makes me wish I had ended this a few years ago when the blog was in its prime, but alas.
I remember well that seventeen year old kid who had no formal concept of writing and began doing this simply because he wanted to blog, the local concerts he started periodically going to seeming like as good a topic as any. That was on MySpace, and while the core idea of what I wanted to do was there, it took a lot of refinement on my part to get this where it could be considered legitimate. A whole lot. And then a lot more. I shudder at how awful my earliest blog posts were.
This was always all about the local music scene in Dallas/Fort Worth, how enamored I was with it, and wanting to share that. My mission then was to try to get people turned on to some great music they may not have known about, and while my goals with TME may have grown loftier over time, that mission was a constant. Hopefully I succeed at that. Even if it was only once with a single individual than it was all worth it.
I also recall seventeen year old me pouring over the liner notes of albums, going over the lyrics and reading the sections where bands thanked whoever and thinking, "I want to see my name in that section one day." I've been humbled a few times in that regard by some awesome local acts. I'm immensely grateful to those who felt compelled to even mention me like that, and thanks, you literally made a dream come true.
However, more than anything, this was something I loved with a burning passion. To me, writing a review was every bit as exhilarating as attending the concert, which was certainly a euphoric rush in itself.
With this thing having lasted thirteen years there are way too many people who helped me along the way to thank by name. But to those who helped expand my horizons from just the local D/FW scene and motivated me to start covering larger events, thank you. To all the bands and musicians who helped foster this little blog and shared my reviews, thank you. To anyone who ever read anything I posted on here, thank you. You all have my eternal and heartfelt gratitude.
The Music Enthusiast was never a buzzed about blog, nor even one widely recognized, though I feel that was appropriate, because it's in line with who I am. I do believe, however, that every single thing I wrote on here felt like it came from the heart. That a piece of me was represented in these words, rather than just being some generic comments.
Maybe one day I'll resume this. If that's even a possibility it's at least several years away. Or maybe the end slipped by some time ago without even knowing. I don't know...
Thanks again to anyone and everyone who ever gave this site a moment of their time. Take care.

2019: A Year in Review - The Top 10′s
I’ve seen a few artists posting year end wrap-ups on social media describing 2019 as an off-year for them. To apply that same term to myself feels like a vast overstatement. This site was largely silent in 2019, with the exception of some press releases here and there and some concert reviews back during the first quarter. On that note, I saw just a little more than a dozen concerts, and didn’t even do reviews of all of them. Hell, I haven’t even written anything in more than half a year at this point, and truth be told, I’m not sure if 2020 will be much different. Time will tell, I suppose.
Personally speaking, 2019 was a trying year right from day one. I will say that losing a parent is excruciatingly difficult and such a loss fundamentally changes you, and I’ll leave it at that.
Despite the lack of posts I did at least want to continue my annual top ten list, so here’s the ten LP’s and EP’s that I added to my collection over the past year that stood out to me the most, complete with a Spotify playlist of my favorite tracks from them.
Check it out if you have some time to spare; and I hope everyone has a wonderful 2020.

Silversun Pickups Announce Round of 2020 U.S. Tour Dates; Visiting Dallas’ House of Blues on February 20th
Silversun Pickups confirm a thirty-date tour of the United States, throughout February and March of next year and in support of their latest studio album, Widow’s Weeds. The band will perform in cities including Los Angeles, Austin, Washington D.C., as well as two shows at New York City’s Brooklyn Steel. Eliza & The Delusionals are confirmed as the support act on the February dates of this tour, and the Australian band has been #1 at Sirius Alt Nation with their single “Just Exist” for the last three months, intermittently. Support for the March dates will be confirmed soon. Tickets for these shows will go on sale on Friday, December 13 at 10am local time (with the exception of Washington D.C.’s March 8th show which will go on sale on Thursday, December 12th at 10am local).
The band today also shares their Alan Del Rio Ortiz directed music video for "Don't Know Yet" via Billboard, along with an interview. Brian Aubert of the band reveals: “We thought that his [Ortiz] idea seems to feel really right with the song. We couldn't figure out how the song necessarily worked in some more clever, narrative thing. We just realized, I think, it's time we have something very, very fundamental, like a really well-shot performance video. We felt like maybe people want to see us in this one.”
Silversun Pickups’ 5th studio album, Widow’s Weeds, is out now via their own New Machine Recordings label. The band enlisted Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth) to produce their latest, an extroverted and open album about rebirth and renewal. Said lead singer Brian Aubert about Widow’s Weeds: “This was the first album where we were open. We were exposed. I see how that can be scary to people, but for us we really thrived on that.” Widow’s Weeds is available for purchase on all formats here.

The release of “Memories” marks the first new music from the Los Angeles band since the release of their global anthem “Girls Like You.” Produced by Adam Levine and The Monsters & Strangerz and Executive Produced by Jacob "J Kash" Hindlin, “Memories” marks a moment of creative and personal progression for the musicians. The minimalist ballad starkly pairs a lilting clean guitar with chantable and evocative lyrics from Levine. In addition to representing another sonic side, it tackles uncharted subject matter for the group— namely loss—but from a different angle.

The Glorious Sons Announce Massive 2020 North American Tour in Support of New Album, 'A War On Everything'; Rocking Dallas on February 6th at Canton Hall
Just two days after their massive sold-out hometown stadium show at Kingston’s Richardson Memorial Stadium, JUNO Award winning rockers The Glorious Sons have announced their 2020 “A War On Everything” North American headlining tour produced by Concerts West/AEG Presents. Kicking off in Pennsylvania on January 16, the sweeping 40+ date tour will hit iconic venues across major cities throughout the U.S. and Canada including stops in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto and Vancouver before wrapping in Montreal on April 11. Joining the tour as special guests are Des Rocs (U.S. dates) and Black Pistol Fire (Canadian dates). The tour announcement follows the celebrated release of the band’s brazen and brutally honest new album A War On Everything (9/13 via Black Box/BMG), and marks the group’s highly-anticipated return to Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, where they wrapped the critically acclaimed larger than life “S.O.S.” tour last November.
Ticket pre-sales for the 2020 “A War On Everything” tour begin today at 1:00 p.m. local time. Tickets go on sale to the public beginning September 27 at 10:00 a.m. local time.
A daring 14-track collection of stadium-ready, “dirty, sweaty rock” (Alternative Press), rife with devastating moments of vulnerability and searing insight into universal truths about anxiety, sadness and isolation in the 21st century, A War On Everything was produced by Frederik Thaae (Kate Nash, Atlas Genius), and recorded at North of Princess studios in the group’s hometown of Kingston, ON. Billboard hailed the record’s “turbulent guitar licks,” saying, “maybe the self-aware band thinks [rock] is dying, but they might just be resurrecting it.” Stuart Berman for Apple Music said, “‘A War on Everything’ heightens the tension between entertainment and inner torment at the heart of The Glorious Sons' sound.”
The record marks the start of a new chapter for a band who earlier this year landed their first Billboard #1 with "S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun)", which held the #1 spot at Active Rock in Canada for 10 consecutive weeks (4 at US Active Rock), spent a record setting 64 weeks on the Canadian Rock Radio Charts while earning CRIA GOLD certification, and is still one of the most spun tracks of 2019 at Rock Radio in North America, firmly planting The Glorious Sons in uncharted territory.
On September 21, The Glorious Sons played to a raucous hometown crowd to commemorate the release of A War On Everything, taking over Kingston’s Richardson Memorial Stadium for a 2.5 hour headline set for the over 14,000 fans in attendance. From headlining clubs to arenas and festival dates, 2019 saw the award-winning band play massive shows with The Rolling Stones and Twenty-One Pilots and tour across the U.S. with The Struts.

Due to overwhelming demand, six-time GRAMMY Award-winning artist Kacey Musgraves has announced five additional tour dates on her Oh, What a World: Tour II. Produced by Live Nation, these U.S. tour dates will see Kacey headlining some of the biggest venues of her career, including Dallas’ The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory on October 10 and October 11. Kacey announced these tour dates this morning on NBC’s TODAY, where she performed her hits “Slow Burn,” “Lonely Weekend,” “Happy and Sad,” and “Oh, What a World” as part of the show’s summer concert series.
Tickets go on sale to the general public starting Friday, July 26th at 10am at Ticketmaster.com. Citi is the official pre-sale credit card of the tour. As such, Citi cardmembers will have access to purchase presale tickets beginning Monday, July 22nd at 10am local time until Thursday, July 25th at 10pm local time through Citi EntertainmentSM.
Kacey has experienced a whirlwind year following the release of her #1 third studio album Golden Hour in March 2018. Kacey took home Album of the Year at the GRAMMY Awards, Country Music Association Awards, and Academy of Country Music Awards, and Golden Hour was named one of the best albums of 2018 by everyone from NPR, Time, The Associated Press and GQ to Rolling Stone, Billboard, Pitchfork, and Complex. Vogue proclaimed Kacey’s “mesmerizing blend of emotional directness and swirling pop melodies, old-school musicianship and new-school production, is a cross-genre triumph that feels so right for now,” and V pronounced, “a masterpiece of crossover country, the record showcased a heartfelt and accessible style, place her both in the glittering center of pop culture and the ears of listeners of every stripe.”
Golden Hour has taken Kacey around the globe; in addition to headlining shows in North America, the U.K., Europe, Japan, China, New Zealand, and Australia, Kacey performed at Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 in South Africa. This year, she performed at festivals from Bonnaroo to Governors Ball, and became the first-ever female country artist to play Coachella. She continues to hit the festival circuit with upcoming performances at the Newport Folk Festival, FloydFest, Hinterland Music Festival, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands. In celebration of Golden Hour’s success, Kacey has been honored at Billboard’s Women in Music event, Variety’s Power of Women event, and she has recently celebrated the opening of her exhibit, All of the Colors, at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, on display through June 2020.

Twenty Øne Piløts Pløt Fall 2019 Dates of “Banditø Tour”; Cøming to Dickies Arena in Ført Wørth on Nøvember 8th
Twenty One Pilots have announced a new U.S. leg of their global headline “Banditø Tour” due to overwhelming demand. The new Live Nation-produced tour dates, which follow this summer’s sold-out arena run, are set to kickoff October 9th at Tampa, FL’s Amalie Arena and will continue through a performance at Tulsa, OK’s BOK Center on November 9th. To ensure tickets get in to the hands of fans and not scalpers or bots, the tour has partnered with Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan platform. Fans can register now through July 14th at 10:00PM PT. Registered fans who receive a code will have access to purchase tickets before the general public starting on July 16th at 10:00AM local time through July 18th at 10:00PM local time. All remaining tickets for the new U.S. dates will be released to the public at 10:00AM local time on Friday, July 19th.
Furthermore, Twenty One Pilots have shared “Cut My Lip (40.6782°N, 73.9442° W),” the second stripped back performance from the band’s new “Løcatiøn Sessiøns.” Recorded by Tyler Joseph, “Cut My Lip (40.6782°N, 73.9442° W)” follows the series’ debut session “Chlorine (19.4326° N, 99.1332° W),” and is accompanied by an official visualizer streaming now on the band’s official YouTube channel.
“Chlorine” is featured on Twenty One Pilots’ acclaimed LP TRENCH, which made a stunning global impact upon release this past October. The RIAA gold certified collection earned the GRAMMY® Award winning duo of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun their biggest sales week ever in the U.S., with 175,000 units sold in its first week. An extraordinary achievement for the Columbus, OH band who moved 135,000 copies of TRENCH in pure album sales without the aid of a ticket / album bundle for their worldwide headline “Banditø Tour.” TRENCH — with over 52 Million on-demand audio streams its first week — also marked the largest streaming week (debut or otherwise) in the U.S. for a rock album. A true global phenomenon amassing 110 Million streams worldwide in its first week, TRENCH earned Twenty One Pilots Top 5 chart debuts around the globe including the U.S., U.K., Belgium, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Scotland, and Sweden, with #1 debuts in Australia, New Zealand, and The Netherlands.
Twenty One Pilots’ TRENCH follows the Twenty One Pilots’ global breakout BLURRYFACE, which made a stunning chart debut upon its initial release, entering the SoundScan/Billboard 200 at #1. The album also achieved a milestone unrivaled in the digital era, becoming the first album in which every individual song on the album certified Gold, Platinum or multi-Platinum by the RIAA.

Bear Hands to Support X Ambassadors on 31-Date Fall US Tour; Includes Stop at House of Blues in Dallas on October 15th
On the heels of their extensive tour with twenty one pilots, today Bear Hands confirm a 31-city tour supporting X Ambassadors. The tour will kick off on October 8 in Tucson, AZ, with shows in cities including Atlanta, Richmond, New York City, Seattle, and Los Angeles. Tickets for all dates are on sale NOW.
Bear Hands, comprised of vocalist Dylan Rau, bassist Val Loper, and drummer TJ Orscher, recently released their fourth studio album Fake Tunes, a deep dive into a twisted modern era, paranoid yet hopeful, celebrity obsessed and introspective, and an unmistakable sign of troubled times. Written and recorded in the plastic warmth of Los Angeles, Fake Tunes marks an evolution for the band, whilst drawing upon newly formed collaborative relationships with producer Christopher Chu of POP ETC and outsider artist Ursula Rose.
Fake Tunes finds Bear Hands exploring new sounds and new themes with fresh wit and vulnerability, and is anchored by Rau’s sharp, incisive songwriting, tackling the challenges of relationships, dependence, acceptance, and uncertainty.
From the “metronomic electro-pop” (New York Times) of album opener "Blue Lips (feat. Ursula Rose)," a song about listening to someone's problems over and over until it drains you completely, to the dreamy lilt of "Clean Up California," a song about finding salvation (or not) across state lines, Fake Tunes traces the anxiety of life and love in America today. The album’s 11 tracks veer from the meaty, rhythmic indie anthems the band cut its teeth on to digitally-infused numbers that swerve across stylistic lanes. The result is a fitting statement of what a band can be—and the expectations it can defy. “It feels like this record is grateful,” Loper says. “We feel lucky to be here, to have the chance to keep making music together. It feels lighter. The songs are shorter, they’re pretty poppy, and they’re to the point. And that’s where our music is most impactful.”

The band continues to receive widespread praise for their sold-out live performances; the Albany Times Union declares, “Mumford & Sons has developed into an arena-rock juggernaut,” while The Washington Post proclaims, “The U.K. quartet thrilled a packed Capital One Arena crowd…undeniably wondrous arena rock anthems” and Billboard asserts, “It’s exactly the kind of tour that will solidify their spot in the pantheon of arena-friendly bands.”
Additionally, the acclaimed band performed “Slip Away” last week on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” Watch/share HERE. The performance was filmed at Central Hall Westminster as part of the show’s 4-episode special broadcasting from London. The song comes from Mumford & Sons’ new album, Delta, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, Americana/Folk Albums, Alternative Rock Albums and Rock Albums charts with 230,000 equivalent album units earned (stream/purchase here). This is the band’s thirdconsecutive #1 debut, the largest sales week for an alternative rock album in 2018 and the sixth largest debut among all titles last year (Gentlemen of the Road/Glassnote Records).
