Father John Misty is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Josh Tillman. Tillman has released two widely acclaimed albums – Fear Fun (2012) and I Love You, Honeybear (2015) – and the recent “Real Love Baby” single as Father John Misty, and recently contributed to songs by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Kid Cudi.

iam8bit will release the orchestral tribute to Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on limited edition vinyl in 2017!

If you’re a music and gamer nerd like myself…get excited because this release is for you. iam8bit & Materia Collective have announced the release of Hero of Time, an officially licensed, one-hour arrangement album based on Koji Kondo’s dynamic, epic and absolutely gorgeous score to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Freshly – and exclusively – recorded by the 64-player Slovak National Symphony Orchestra for this very album, Hero of Time breaths new life into classic Ocarina of Time score, previously only available from its Nintendo 64 sound chip origins.

The album is arranged and composed by Eric Buchholz and features album artwork by Ryan Brinkerhoff that includes a die-cut Ocarina window on the jacket’s front.

This album will be recorded LIVE in January 2017 at Studio 1 in Bratislava by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra, immediately thereafter mastered and prepared for vinyl, ensuring a ship date of Q2, 2017.

Hero of Time will be pressed on 2xLP 180g Green & Purple Rupee vinyl and will also include a digital soundtrack of the album.

Rather than pick up where they left off, Grails take the sky-high riff-based heaviness of their earlier albums and distill it into a nuanced, widescreen opus. The perennial influences of mid-20th century Western film scores, obscure library music, and psychedelic krautrock are indelibly imprinted, but Chalice Hymnal exudes an eerie patience in unfurling the many layers of its subtle details. Produced by the band over the past five years, Chalice Hymnal bears some of the European psych and experimental hip-hop production techniques of founding members Alex Hall and Emil Amos’ other group, Lilacs & Champagne. Amos’ meditative metal band, Om, and longtime singer-songwriter project, Holy Sons, also naturally find their way into the Chalice cauldron. Rounding out their line-up, cofounder Zak Riles (also of experimental kraut-psych trio, Watter) layers synths and programming into an electronic-prog hybrid that pushes Grails further into the deep end, displaying a profound resonance, both musically and emotionally. 1. Dopesmoker, by Sleep

  The “Indica” Edition of Sleep’s 2003 album “Dopesmoker” came pressed in a fitting green and purple swirl to represent the color of the band’s drug of choice. To celebrate its 2012 re-issue, the band’s new controlling label, Southern Lord, pressed a “Sativa” Edition to complement the original. The album is considered a seminal work in the genre of “stoner metal,” which emphasizes a groovy and distorted sound to go with the groovy and distorted lifestyle. Instead of tracks, the entire album is one 63-minute song that is sometimes awesome and sometimes extremely boring.

  2. Ghostbusters Soundtrack, by Ray Parker Jr.

  The 30th Anniversary Edition of the Ghostbusters Soundtrack was released in limited pressing for Record Store Day 2014. The understated off-green record is interesting looking enough as it is, and features the famous film logo over the center, but it gets better: the album glows in the dark. Not only is the original hit song featured in “Ghostbusters” on the record, but several remixes including a dubstep version have been added on for the sake of modernity. The original remains an instantly recognizable classic to this day.

  3. Calculating Infinity, by The Dillinger Escape Plan

  The first album by The Dillinger Escape Plan, released in 1999, was designed to look like a safe on its vinyl pressing, featuring a combination lock over the center and sepia orange interspersed with the usual black, aiding in the aged look of the album overall. The band’s namesake, famous bank robber John Dillinger, probably had more than a little to do with the lock and vault theme that the aesthetics of the metal band’s debut obviously carries. The band’s music is aggressive and eclectic, and they continue to be popular to this day within their sub genre of “mathcore.”

4. Mess, by Liars

  Another Record Store Day Exclusive, “Mess” by Liars had a colorful 1000-run vinyl, but not in the usual way. The band pressed strings into the clear vinyl of the album, creating an eclectic and unique look to go with the album’s ideas of meaningful mess. The process created some interesting results. In case that wasn’t enough string from you, the album also came packaged with vacuum-packed string from the art piece on the regular album cover. The band’s music can best be described as avant-garde techno-pop.

  5. Plastic Infinite, by Scultpure

  Most albums with unique vinyl have interesting colors, or an interesting pattern, or sometimes even holographic patterns. But it’s rare to see a vinyl with an entire animation on it. Sculpture’s “Plastic Infinite” features a zoetrope on its body, a pre-film type of animation relying on a spinning pattern and a flashing light. Spinning the album normally,it’s easy to appreciate the beautiful artwork in its own right. But when you apply a strobe flashing 25 times per minute, you end up with something much more amazing that simply must be seen in motion to truly appreciate. The psychedelic and experimental music of the band perfectly compliments their beautiful, unique and very colorful vinyl.
