He ignored the metaphorical sting when Wei Wuxian mentioned Lan Wangji - after all with everything that had happened he could hardly have any claim. He glanced at his former brother, focusing again on the issue at hand.
Any personal gripe could be dealth with later.
"Fine, I understand, we both have people we care about." He made a pause. "Then tell me what I can do to help. I have not seen this much of resentful energy since..."
His voice trailed off. He did not want to mention it, he could not. He still remembered way too much and his scars - the emotional ones - had never healed. He swallowed. "... Since a long time."
Had it been a decade earlier Jiang Cheng would have not hesitated in dismissing anyone who got in the way of his hunting, but now the situation was quite different and required different things.
And he knew that they both could not afford to die there. So he shelved away his agenda and focused on the practical things. "I believe that there is someone maneuvering all of this energy not very far from here. I'd like to see if they can be saved, but we need to contain and dispel the resentful energy first. What is the plan?"

"Thank you. I appreciate it." HE sighed, watching her go. Then he took the bowl - Yanli did teach her well. He started eating the soup whilst glancing down the paperwork and filling out the report.
Not that he did not trust anyone else, he really just did not want the other cultivators to say anything about how he ran the area.
However, soon enough, after finishing the soup, he did feel sleepy and the writing was starting to become very blurry.
Before he could even register it, his head fell on the desk - a nap, maybe a nap was all that he needed. He would close his eyes for five minutes and then start again.
And he drifted off to sleep nevertheless.

Jiang Cheng grimaced, he really did NOT want to have to fight. "Look, I am perfectly aware that this is resentful energy." He crouched next to her. "We are cultivators for a reason and you are in the Yunmeng area, which is underneath my clan."
He made a pause, eyeing her. "Why don't you tell us who you really are? There might be people worried about you. We will deal with the rest."
Now, that really felt like trying to get his nephew to listen to him.

Jiang Cheng looked unimpressed. Really, he did find all of the odd ones. He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Right, no one. A no one who was next to resentful energy.” As if he had not noticed.
THe years spent trying to find traces of Wei Wuxian had honed his skills, sort of. “Not very convincing, wanna try again?” He crossed his arms on the chest, waiting on an answer. This felt a bit like a goose chase, so he did not want to waste any time. He would gauge his reaction only after hearing everything.

“Convincing of what? I am a wanderer,” she insists, biting her lower lip. “I was just helping out a deer, is that wrong?”
Surely cleansing a little resentful energy wasn’t a crime or something? It wasn’t like humans couldn’t do that. Right? Or was she wrong about that and blew her cover trying to do a good deed?

Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes. "I have a sister I do not want to worry."
He glanced at the soup - he actually could use some of it. "Yeah, fine, I'll take some soup. Will you then let me finish my job? We don't need two people sick."

Sickness sentence starters
Are you alright? You look really, really pale.
Come on, eat something! Why aren’t you eating?
You should be in bed with that fever.
Eat. More.
Put down that book and sleep.
You are not alright, I can see it.
Are you cold? I’ll bring some more blankets.
You should have told me that you had been feeling strange lately!
Let me take your temperature.
Rest, and by resting, I don’t mean reading all the books you possibly can while in bed.
It’s not just cough, you’re ill!
Stop saying that you’re fine if you are not!
Drink it, it’ll make you feel better.
No, you’re far too ill to go outside.
It will taste terrible, but it will make you better.

Jiang Cheng had to use all of his willpower not to smack Wei Wuxian's head. What more did he need to hear?
He bit his lips, reducing his eyes to slits. He was going to be the adult, right? He let out a sigh.
Tumblr media
"Listen, if you are trying to be like that out of guilt, or whatever, know that you don't have to. You said it yourself, let the past be the past, right? Is moping around or sacrificing yourself going to bring back everyone? No. So shut up and let me help for once in our lives! I have forgiven you long ago. Now, plan. Don't stare at me like I have grown two heads, I am not cleaning up anyone's mess."
The tone was angrier than intended - not that he could help it in that situation. In any case, something had to be done. He shouted a few orders to his disciples, who sprung immediately into formation and were now waiting for more orders.
He truly hoped that the barriers around would hold up. He added, after a while: "You won't lose me, I told you, I have dealt with this plenty of times, I don't want to lose you again, you idiot! I have lost too many and like hell I am going to let you do anything stupid! I will- ehr, your husband will never let me hear the end of it!"

𝐍𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒
"Wake up! Wake up! It's just a dream!"
"What were you dreaming about...? You were shouting..."
"I woke up because you were screaming so loudly."
"Shh- No, no, don't panic, love. You're safe now."
"It was so real! I swear! He/she was here!"
"I don't ever want to sleep again. What if-what if I dream about that again?"
"If you tell me, it'll go away. That's what my mom/dad always told me and it's never failed me."
"Do you want to go back to sleep, or shall I make you a cup of tea?"
"I don't want to go back to sleep..."
"I'm so scared ... I can't stop seeing what I just saw. It was so vivid!"
"There's really nobody here, okay? Do you need me to show you around to prove that to you?"
"How do I know I'm not still dreaming? You're acting really strangely."
"Let's get you to the shower, you're covered in sweat."
"There's really nobody else here."
"You've got a really bad fever. That must have caused those weird dreams."
"I don't even know what a peaceful night's sleep is like anymore."
"I can't do this anymore. These nightmares have to stop..."
"Shh, it was just a bad dream. Just a dream, okay? None of it was real."
"I can't go back to sleep after that. I need coffee-no, I need a drink, a stiff one."
"How long have you been having these nightmares?"
"I've had nightmares all my life, but they've been really bad recently."
"You get so worked up before you go to sleep, maybe you should try to relax a bit more. Maybe then you'll get some rest?"
"I'd kill for a peaceful night's sleep."
"A dream catcher? Honestly? I'm not a child."
"Nothing's ever helped this. I just need to learn to live with the fact that sleeping will always be nightmare, literally."
"I'm so tired... but there's no way I'm going back to sleep after that."

Jiang Cheng raises a brow, eyeing the disciples who found this girl - he feels the situation is a bitmore complex, but he sets doubts aside for later.
He looks at her. He will probably stay there in the main hall for a while. "Right, let us start with something I can deal with right now. "Who are you and what has brought you here in Yunmeng?"

Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes, having to take a deep breath not to lose his mind completely. Not even death had done anything for Wei Wuxian's stubbornness.
Now, he was debating in his mind how to break to his former brother that he could be of more effect than expected. He quickly glanced back at his own disciples before looking at the raven again.
Tumblr media
"You don't understand, I know how to save them. More than half of my disciples were demonic cultivators before they joined my sect. The ones I managed to save. What are you going to do here? I have learned the hard way."
And also, he had discovered that he was willing to be much more forgiving and soft-hearted than expected, especially when it came to Wei Wuxian, but that would take a bit longer before he would be ready to actually admit it.
He reduced his eyes to slits. "Also, these kids will be in actual danger, imagine if a-Ling was there! Resentful energy is not something easy, look at my disciples. They know. They once tried to be you and they nearly went the self-sacrificing way. I have vowed on my parents and a-jie's grave that I would not lose anyone anymore and that unfortunately includes you, so suck it up and let me help!"
Very touching words, if only they were said with a little less anger fueled by grief and guilt.

Jiang Cheng had responded, as usual, once that the words 'resentful energy' had been uttered. He had told Wu Liling not to let out Jin Ling from Lotus Pier and had taken a few disciples with him - the ones who had dealt with that before joining, but no one except him and the disciples knew about that.
Of course Wei Wuxian was there, and of course one death had not been enough to make him less careless. Although way more toned down, his former brother still had that self-sacrificing streak.
He had sighed, giving a few orders to cover both of them up, then had grabbed Wei Wuxian's arm before shouting angrily - maybe with more concern than he was expecting - that he did not need to be the martyr.
Of course his answer had made him angrier. "I am not trying to argue, Wei Wuxian!" He gritted his teeth. "I am trying to say that I am not making the same mistake twice and that now I know how to deal with that too!"
Well, that was only in theory correct, he had refused to touch anything related to demonic cultivation, but having spent the past sixteen years looking for Wei Wuxian, meeting instead several knockoffs and then accepting most of these knockoffs into his sect had given him a sort of knowledge by proxy about that.
"I know I am not you, Wei Wuxian, but I can still do something!" He shouted, steadying himself. "I am not losing you again to demonic cultivation, this is final!"
As much as he had wanted, there would be no force on earth or heaven that stopped him from not letting his former brother die.
(thejiangcheng)
“ quit playing the martyr. we’re not leaving you behind. “
//so sorry it took so long, I have been going through stuff
Settling Dust Prompts |still accepting|
@thejiangcheng
A martyr was something that Wei Wuxian was willing to be, he had already been labeled as a scapegoat in the past. The Sects were quick to turn their back on him after he had tried to protect the remaining members of the Wen Sect, they were just people who were just trying to live. A lot of them weren’t even cultivators, they were just the elderly, woman, and a child. It had been his decision to save them, one that he did not regret. His actions were frowned upon, the path that he took was frowned upon after giving that golden core to his former brother.
Another decision that he did not regret, it was the only way that the raven could think on how to repay the family that had raised him. How for Jiang Cheng to keep the Sect going, he was needed for the sake of the ones who had survived the attack.
He didn’t expect Jiang Cheng to forgive him that easily, he wasn’t going to ask for that forgiveness. It was something that his former brother would have to do on his own, the unknown was there on when that was going to happen. It was something that couldn’t be rushed, something that would most likely happen in due time.
Wei Ying left it up to him though.
The situation was a tricky one, it was troublesome while the obvious source dealt with resentful energy. It was strong. He was the best one to deal with this matter because of the knowledge that he had in his hands, it was the reason why he didn’t hesitate to send the others first. He could deal with this even if it wasn’t going to be easy besides he doubted that Lan Zhan wasn’t going to leave him alone that easily.
A small breath escaped from him
“This isn’t the time to argue Jiang Cheng. Just go.”
