It's supposed to be from 2004 FMA, though. It's been forever since I've actually watched that version. I don't remember this at all. But I'm glad I came across it.

Okay. A little more about Father being "Leto". It goes back to the idea that after Xerxes fell, Hohenheim traveled to the east and was rescued and taken to Xing where he taught them alchemy, or rather alkahestry. In their legends, histories and stories he became the "The Sage of the West".

Ed notes that they had similar stories about a man from the east bringing Alchemy to Amestris. And this man was known as the "Philosopher of the East". This man was, who would later become known as "Father". At this point in time he had no children yet.

Keep in mind this was still in the early 1500's, when they didn't really know about Alchemy yet in this world, because it came from Xerxes and it was still a time of magic and wonder. Science wasn't really the main source of knowledge, leaving people clinging to superstition and religion alone.

So imagine if you were alive back in the 1500s and a man approached you with golden hair and eyes and was doing "miracles", like healing people, fixing things, and maybe even turning coal into gold, and all of this other stuff... people would think that you're a god walking amongst men. Because they had never seen anything like this before.

I think Father possibly became associated with a sun god because of his golden hair and eyes and his ability to perform miracles and people followed him and worshipped him and possibly asked him to teach them his ways. Hence "bringing Alchemy to Amestris".

Knowing Father, he didn't do it out of the kindness of his heart. There was a purpose he had in mind for Amestris since he started gaining loyalty and followers and it was the start of the country.

Fastforward to the early 1900s. 400 years later. Father is still worshiped as someone who could produce miracles... myths and legends turned into a religion over the years. And of course they had to make the Priest, Father Cornello, and others like him, able to perform "miracles" without a transmutation circle, just as Father had so many years ago.

So this explains a few things. The reason why Father and the Homunculi just gave the man a philosopher's stone... so he could appear to be doing these miracles without a circle. Why there was a tunnel leading straight to Father through the temple. And why Leto is associated with the sun.

You know I have never truly thought about who Father is as a character or what his motivations might be for doing what he did... I just thought he was a 2D villain wanting power for the sake of power but after reading his wikia page I am honestly walking away with some appreciation for his character in the sense of how well developed he actually is. Which I should have expected it honestly because every other character in the series is very well thought out and complex and he's no exception.

I think at one point he says something along the lines of any emotions his "children" had, he once felt them too. And that they were all born of his own vices?

So if we take a look at Envy, Greed, and Pride and how they all felt about themselves and about humanity... those were once Father's emotions. And I think that is very telling.

He was envious about humans and wanted to have friends and emotional relationships just like humans did. He yearned for it, and created his family, just as Hohenheim pointed out to him.

So imagine being stuck in a flask for what could have possibly been at least 30 years. Just watching people. Watching them interact with their loved ones, having families and being happy... and him just being stuck in the flask WANTING all of that... and then that led to him developing a hatred towards the form he was given and towards humanity in the process. Because he couldn't possibly have what they had. He hated that he had these feelings and possibly felt them as being weaknesses that he had to get rid of... because he could be better than them. He didn't want to feel that... pain... anymore.

So he severed his connection with those emotions and made them into his children.

And honestly I just think this idea makes Father more complex and interesting and shame on me for not realizing this sooner.

OOC: Another day, another day of people misunderstanding Hohenheim's love for his children. I just finished watching a reaction video to an episode on YouTube so I have a few questions I'd like to address.

"A parents love for their spouse is nothing compared to the love they have for their children. Why would Hohenheim seem to love Trisha more? Why does he only have side-love for his children?"

Hohenheim loves his children quite a lot. He could have been content with sitting at home and watching the world go to hell and let his children grow old and die right before his eyes while Father murders everyone but he did not do that. It was because of his love for his children and his family that he sacrificed years of of being there and loving them so he could give them a future, and so he would not have to watch them die while he stayed the same and never aged. That is torture. No parent should have to bury their child or children.

I can bet my bottom dollar that Hohenheim had no clue that Trisha even died until we see his first real entrance in the show, standing at the grave side wondering why his house burned down, his children was gone and his wife was dead. That was quite a lot to come back home to and a lot to process at once. He is allowed to mourn his wife and be shocked about everything that happened. That does not mean that he loves her more. Just loved his kids and her differently. Mourning her does not automatically mean he loved her more.

Imagine being immortal. Hohenheim is literally 450 years old. Would you have the same human emotions as everyone else after living 450 years? No.

He experienced the collapse of Xerxes and carried half of the souls of the people he knew and loved inside of him. Can we say trauma? He feels like a monster, too, afraid to touch someone so innocent and pure as his kids because he's afraid to taint them.

Hohenheim offered his own life TWICE so they could get their bodies back.

"But then why didn't he spend more time in the show with them once they met up?"

Ed made it clear to Hohenheim that he wanted nothing to do with him and didn't care about his "excuses", so Hohenheim was trying to respect his son's wishes despite how he himself felt. He thought that Al probably felt the same as Ed and didn't know what the heck to say to him when he was at Liore with Al, so he f'd off and let Al come to him instead--- which told him that Al wanted to spend time with him and he wasn't imposing himself onto his son.

Hohenheim genuinely believes his kids are better off without him after all, he did fail them when they needed him most. He was so busy trying to protect them from external threats that he failed to see internal ones. He genuinely believed that when he came back home, Trisha would still be there, happy and greeting him with a smile. Perhaps Ed and Al would have been old enough that Trisha would tell them why and they would understand.

TIME also passes differently for an immortal. 10 years to him probably felt like a couple of months.

Hohenheim is not a perfect father. I am not trying to make excuses for him. Ed and Al have a right to their feelings because everything they experienced was very real for them. Their childhood sucked. We all know this. But to say Hohenheim didn't love his children is a big misinterpretation of his character. Everything he did was out of love for his children. He sacrificed his own happiness with them in an attempt to give them a better future. That is true love. He didn't care if they hated him, as long as they were still alive and thriving. That's what he wanted more than anything and he got to see that right before he died and that let him go peacefully. Knowing they would be okay without him.

OOC: I realized something the other day when watching FMAB again, and I am probably late to this party, but there’s an after credits scene where Father basically disassembles Gluttony and says that he would bring him back later with “his memories intact”. I didn’t realize that this was a clue with what happened to Greed for some reason. In that I mean, Greed claims to be a different Greed, when reborn in Ling’s body, but I am willing to bet that it’s the same Greed, but Father wiped his memories before putting him into Ling... and that’s probably why the memories eventually started to leak through later on in the series. Father wiped his memories in hopes to get a better outcome with his avarice, but it didn’t work.

OOC: If I am being honest, as much as I love Bradley and Hohenheim, I think that Scar probably, subjectively speaking, had the best character arc in the entire series. How he went from a murderer, to overcoming hatred and anger, to helping save the entire country, is just amazingly good writing. His change in heart never once felt forced... it just played out perfectly.

He had a better idea of who he spoke to now: Hohenheim. The name came up a couple of times when talking to the Elric brothers, and nowhere else. No records, and no paper trail to follow, Roy knew little outside of what they told him. But, with a narrowed gaze, he had to wonder how well Hohenheim knew him. 

Clearly, not well enough.

“I know I am,” he corrected, tone cold before he raised an eyebrow. Roy was well aware he was a piece on someone else’s board, but who did Hohenheim refer to. “How so? I’m not sure I understand what you’re referencing.”

                “You’re known as the Hero of Ishval, are you not?” He asked in a thoughtful tone as he gave the man a once over glance to make certain he had gotten his details correct. Until now, he had only heard stories of the man standing before him now. The Ishvalan War was just one of many battles that the Dwarf in the Flask had concocted for his ultimate goal, and he had used the young alchemist standing before him now as a pawn in his game.

                Hohenheim no longer had any fear of death, after all he had been searching for a way to cure his immortality, hadn’t he? He knew the man before him was a human weapon, like all dogs of the military... but how could he be for certain he could trust the man before him now with such information? How did he know if Mustang was loyal to the man he served in central or not? Perhaps he would give him a small piece of the information and see what he would do with it before he would say anything more.

                “Have you taken a good look at the map of Amestris? What does it look like to you?” Hohenheim sat down his brief case and opened it up. There were only a few changes of clothes and some papers and books. Nothing that would be concerning. Hohenheim took the folded map out and unfolded it carefully and stood up to show it to the other man. The map itself had markings of an alchemy circle that he had drawn many years ago in his office... the night he had decided to leave his family. “The war was no accident.”

OOC: Oh Geeze Hohenheim really being called out like that XD it is true, though, he is 451 years old and as sad as it is, for him time passes by more quickly. A few years, while it seemed like a long time to Ed and Al, to Hohenheim I am sure he didn’t realize how much time had really passed by for his family. To him it may have seemed much much shorter...

At the end of the day, blame Father for all of the misery and heartache. If he hadn’t been plotting mass genocide and mass slaughter, Hohenheim wouldn’t have left to start with.
