A good friend explains the beach photograph:
"So we were staying in an airbnb in Lyon in France. Apartment up one flight of stairs fronting onto the Rhone - opposite was where those huge floating river cruise boats tied up. Lovely spot all round. But the appt was very tired & dirty & artlessly set up for visitation - had a huge double pine bunk in a corner of the living room. We were let in by a 19yo we guessed boy completely disinterested.
There were un locked cupboards I had to explore. Heaps of photo albums & boxes of loose photos some of which I pilfered.
Looking at the evidence trail I decided this woman was the young bloke’s Gma. Either he inherited or more likely she was in care & a decision was made to let her house out until she croaked & the estate was settled.
I became quite engrossed in her life & her changing appearance as she aged.
Lock your cupboards if renting to [me] Byron!"

NT Postcard. On the Obverse (inter alia) :
"…Look Mum, no stamps!"
This was 7 months after Cyclone Tracy. The planes in the airport hangar walls were gone but the holes they had made were still there. Power was back on but steel power poles still looked like they had been bent by a nuclear explosion. Vegetation was re-growing as if after a bushfire but without any ash.
Permission had been given to locals to "loot" supermarkets which made tinned food plentiful but since the blasts of seawater had smashed off all paper labels you weren't sure if you were having beetroot or peaches for tea till you opened the tins.
Welcome to August 1975.

"I sheltered in a dugout, squatting under the ramparts. My heel ground into a dead, detached hand… I ran back the way I’d come, bruising my feet and crashing into unsteady piles of stones, slipping in blood… Christ, it was awful."
