A bit late, but further evidence that Gourry’s met Lina’s dad is this being the man he met in “The Thing He Sees Beyond the Point of His Sword”:
Tumblr media
And this being Lina’s father with both daughters:
Tumblr media
With both images being Rui Araizumi’s work.
Re: Lina’s Dad
Starting a new thread since the other had moved on to Spot (and I’ll research that soon).
Question: Did Gourry meet Lina’s father?
Answer: Yes.
In the one-shot story published in “Fantasia Battle Royal” (a bonus issue of Dragon Magazine) on September 18th, 2000 for October release Kanzako wrote Gourry and an unnamed man having a little adventure titled “The Thing He Sees Beyond the Point of His Sword”.
Evidence within the text:
Former mercenary who used to fight mazoku. (He teaches Gourry about them.)
We know from Lina’s novel admissions that her parents were a sorceress and mercenary duo who were pretty tough in their day.
Older of his two daughters killed a plasma dragon with a kitchen knife
If that doesn’t sound like Luna to you I don’t know what to say. Also, I think Lina once said that she had done that but I am not certain.
His younger daughter studied magic and taught him Elmekia Lance.
Lina would totally want her sword-bound dad to learn something ranged.
There’s more, I’m sure, but the translation I found was pretty rough. I doubt English was the translator’s first language.
Other evidence: Kanzaka was interviewed for Blaster! (the Slayers Fan magazine) Volume 7. I’ll post the relevant passage here from page 57:
(T) “What is the name of Lina’s father?” (Kanzaka) Ehehe. It’s secret. (H) You must have idea, because your face is serious. (Kanzaka) Oh, you read my thoughts! Well, I can say. But, if I do so, it lost the meaning that I didn’t write his name on purpose….. (H) That means he will write the sequel, so we shouldn’t hear it now. (T) It may not mean simply the sequel of that spin-off. (Kanzaka) It’s secret, please don’t ask details. (H) May I ask how old is Lina’s father? (Kanzaka) I don’t have the setting. *laugh* (H) How long ago was that story? (Kanzaka) Probably, when Lina was doing various things in special series.
While he is not saying “Gourry met Lina’s father” he’s admitted that Lina’s father was in a written work as an unnamed man. The novels are from Lina’s (and briefly L-sama’s) perspective, so there is no other time that I know of where the story is not written from her point of view (because she would have labeled him as her father), Lina’s exact location is unknown, and we’re introduced to an unnamed man in a spin-off.

The Claire Bible started citing a long string of fragmented phrases. “The mother of all darkness, the true lord of all demons, a being with the desire to turn all to the days of yore. An existence darker than darkness and blacker than night; a sea of Chaos, molten gold, complete nothingness… that from which all Chaos springs forth. In other words, the Lord of Nightmares.

In canon, we never see Naga and Amelia meet. Amelia rarely talks about her sister, so there’s little for Lina to go on there.
The ‘runaway’ part is a bit misleading. She was allowed to go adventuring to preserve her sanity, wearing her mom’s old black magic outfit, after witnessing her mother’s murder by an assassin and killing the assassin herself. (Hence Naga-as-Nama’s freakout over an assassin and Naga’s aversion to both blood and blades.) She’s not ‘missing’ and regularly gets money and letters from home.
Since the royal family knows what she’s wearing, having seen it on her mother and herself before she left.
Any paintings of Naga would be as Gracia, in royal robes and without her signature outfit or diadem. Plus, the event happened years before she met Lina, so it would be out of date. It’s possible that even if Lina saw paintings of her it was different enough that she didn’t notice entirely, since her trips to Seyruun tend to be during times when there are Bigger Problems to think about.
Gracia’s status as Philionel’s heir is never answered, to my knowledge, so it’s uncertain which sister will inherit the kingdom. Luckily Phil isn’t officially King yet since he refuses to take the throne while his father lives, but it’s a question that will need to be answered some day.
Also, hello!
Slayers Try: Nahga’s Laugh
I recently finished watching the entirety of Slayers Try. While there are plenty of things that piqued my interest throughout the series, this post is about one particular scene.
In episode 12/75, Lina threatens Jillas after his tank is successfully destroyed. And she does this….
Tumblr media
She laughs like her old cohort/rival/travel companion, Nahga. Yes, that horrid, high-pitched laugh that makes ears bleed regardless of the language it’s in. It’s not often that The White Serpent is referenced within the Slayers series outside of the movies and OAVs, so this was definitely a surprise.
The next shot is of Amelia…
Tumblr media
Why would Amelia hate that particular kind of laugh?
There have been rumors, speculation, and small implications like this that cause fans to ask the question: Are Amelia and Nahga related?
There is plenty of evidence to support this notion.
First, there are physical similarities. Amelia, Nahga, and Prince Philionel all have very dark hair with a tiny bit that sticks out either up or right in front. Amelia and Nahga are also *ahem* well-endowed for their respective ages.
Second, the personality traits. All three of them like to give speeches, whether the purpose is to berate an enemy or just embarrass them. There is also a tendency towards impulsive silliness and loud, awkward laughter.
Next, the dropped hints. Amelia mentions having an older sister who travels. There is also the above reaction; Why would she hate that particular laugh? Likely because she heard it in her own home! There is also mention by Zelgadis that Seyruun has a “runaway princess.”
My question is, how has Lina not made the connection?
Nahga’s actual name is Gracia Ul Naga Saillune. Despite this, since Nahga is a “runaway princess,” it’s likely that many of her subjects have never actually seen her. Would they recognize her in the super skimpy outfit? Are there any paintings of Nahga in the Saillune castle?
From what I have researched, the only confirmation of Nahga’s relationship to Amelia and Prince Phil comes from interviews with the creators.
I would love to see Nahga reunite with her family on screen, and do so in the presence of the other Slayers. You know, one big, trouble-making, world-saving family.

Hm. I’m adding this to my research queue because that was my first thought too. Kanzaka wikia says that skilled users can regrow limbs with it.
Holy Magic and reattaching severed limbs
On the subject of the limits of healing magic, it might be relevant to bring back one of the more gruesome scenes in the KoA manga. You know the one: where Riksfalto punches(?) Lyos so hard that his ARM FALLS OFF-

Cut for spoilers, but it’s just discussion about that character who is in the main party!
In my opinion, Amelia being unable to attach limbs without holy interference is perfectly reasonable.
In my theory, Amelia isn’t 100% aligned with healing white magic, or at least is not a master. She has no trouble casting other shamanism spells like Sylphiel does, for example, though she has lots of practice with lesser injures. Plus it’s specifically said that it takes a master of the spell to heal a major injury like growing a limb, so I would assume reattaching a limb (and all the nerves) would take practice.  Amelia was raised in a palace and while it is indeed canon to this comic that she can cast the spell, we see through Sylphiel’s journey with Flare Arrow that skill and practice can greatly affect the outcome of a spell. I doubt there are many injuries around the palace where people are losing limbs. And if there was such an injury they would call in a master of the spell they have lying around because it’s Seyruun. She’s surprised that it’s happening as well, so she wasn’t expecting this to work.
Her line about it not being enough to work could just mean her own spell wouldn’t be enough. Not from a lack of power/mana capacity (she’s seen tossing Ra Tilts within seconds of each other) but more likely from a lack of practice.

Actually, they had plenty of white magic. White magic is not Holy magic, it’s usually seen as a branch of shamanism. Growth and astral/spirit shamanism in combination make healing spells and anti-ghost spells. They can affect weaker mazoku because of the astral element. This is confirmed by Kanzaka. It’s believed by people who don’t know better in the Slayers world itself to be the power of the gods and thus the realm of priests and priestesses, but it’s actually not related to anything godly/deity-like.
Holy magic, which uses power from the Shinzoku, is what has been lost to regular mortals. Most didn’t even know it was a thing. Lina did but that’s because she’s a serious nerd, and since she knows that the Mazoku and Shinzoku have an ‘anything you can do I can do better’ thing going on it stands to reason that if Black magic draws from mazoku in general or specific great mazoku that there should be a Shinzoku equivalent.
As for the original question about broken bones, I’m too tired to search my novels but IIRC @theguineapig3 is entirely correct about what canon says. Healing spells increase your body’s healing speed, bacteria are enhanced too, they don’t cast healing spells on a person with broken bones until things are aligned or else everything will indeed heal but heal in their current location, etc. Recovery would apparently be potentially deadly for someone who had a severe injury, so  I imagine they’d do as much manually as possible since higher healing spells are much rarer to find a caster for.
I don’t think the subject of cancer is ever broached, but I’ll check my sources tomorrow when I’m not so tired.
@sorceress-botan You are correct about healing spells restoring lost limbs, but only those highly skilled with Resurrection, which again, is far less common a skill than Recovery, and only those who have intensely mastered the spell. Also the flesh has to come from somewhere, so despite Resurrection taking energy from life forms around the spell area the injured party would still be completely drained and possibly  a bit thinner because their body turned fat and any stored minerals and supplies into a new limb.
You know how White Healing spells are used to heal wounds in Slayers? How well do you think they’ll work on broken bones?

Re: Dilgear/Spot
Looking up information on Slayersverse werewolves I came across information about Dilgear’s transition to Spot that I’d like to share.
Kanzaka admitted in an interview how Dilgear submitted to being called Spot.
[L and A are interviewers, Author is Kanzaka.]
(L) I think----there're 3 people: elder sister and parents, in Lina's home: Zephielia, right? (Author) At the time when Vol.8 of main series was finished, a pet was added. (L) Pet? (Author) Dilgear. (L) *burst into laughter* (Author) Luna often feeds stray dogs and stray cats..... Dilgear was beat easily in Vol.3 and have nowhere to go (he's alive as you thought). He wandered and went to Zephielia. Then, he broke down from being starving, and was picked up by Luna. He woke up to find himself being kept on a chain with a big doghouse in the backyard of Lina's home, and was named "Spot" by Luna. (L) .....Di.....Dilgear..... (Author) "Boss, I have a name: 'Dilgear' not 'Spot'." Saying so, he took exception in tears to Luna. But, she turned a deaf ear, and called him "Spot, Spot." putting a set lunch of steak slightly out of the length of his chain. So, Dilgear said ".....I knew my name is Spot....." crying. (L) .....Ceiphied-Knight may be crueler than Mazoku..... .....usually, a person done such a thing will run away..... (Author) Well, unfortunately, Dilgear is charmed by Luna in a sense, not because she is the person to whom one owes his life. By the way----- I think this won't appear in novel, but there's an episode that Lina, who visited home after a long time, found Dilgear and had a hearty laugh pointing him.
Dark stuff, but we all knew Luna is an example of “Good Is Not Nice” already.
Essentially, when Lina was having her adventure ending in Gaav and Hellmaster’s deaths Luna chained up the starving Dilgear and refused him food until he submitted to his new name. The timing even lines up in the anime, with the infamous eye catch debuting in Slayers NEXT.
Tumblr media
IMO: This means she’s bullying the bully into being a good pet, but is also going to take pretty good care of him after he recognizes her as the boss and that her rules are law. After all, she brought him a full steak lunch.

Healing comes from the troll half, that much I’m fairly confident about. More intelligence and better ability to speak, as well as few other factors come from Werewolves because trolls are confirmed for one of the dumber beastmen races, werewolves are like the foxmen.
Okay, looking for help from Slayers fandom.
I would like to know information about werewolves in Slayers verse. I can’t find anything in the kanzaka wikia more than mentions to side characters and all, but the only pure ones seem to be the ones that appeared in the “Mirror, mirror” OVA.
I’d like to get more information about them, or where to find it. It only seems by that OVA that they can transform whenever they want? And also even in their beast form they can hold and use weapons (something interesting actually).
Other than that, I don’t know anything else, like if they can transform at day as well, or if they can switch to a pure wolf form as well or if they are born that way or only exist by a curse or so.
Any help, please? Thanks a lot!

Facts: Werewolves are a subspecies of animal-based beastmen.
Unsure of: Since Dilgear is half-werewolf and started the anime bipedal but is now anime canon ‘Spot’, the wolf pet/companion of Luna Inverse, it seems that they can transform. How often they do or if they must transform at the full moon or not I can’t say.
When I have a little time (and am not about to go to bed) I will investigate further for more information.
Edit: Further adding that Dilgear was seen beside Luna outside during the day as a quadruped.

Slayers Science 101: Talking Rocks
Okay, accioharo has availed me of my niche Geology nerd powers to do some SCIENCE for the sake of figuring out some sweet Zelgadis rock info.
First let’s start with the basics.
The three known elements that went into the form that Rezo cursed Zel with are the following: human!Zel, brau demon, and rock golem.
Tumblr media
As you can see- the brau demon gave Zel a few important traits- the pointed ears, the blue skin and the wire hair. Obviously, Zel kept his human parts on the inside, giving the only visible trait of the rock golem those little rocks that poke out of Zel’s skin.
Tumblr media
Okay, but what are those rocks?
Well first let’s think about rock golems. Rock golems are made out of the material a spellcaster has available (see some of Naga’s handiwork for this). This means that the majority of rock golems are going to be made out of the extrusive rocks that make up the continent’s crust. Some of these likely contenders are rocks called Granite, Andesite and Basalt.
Andesite is kind of a midpoint between the other two. It forms at subduction zones - when two tectonic plates crash into each other and one gets shoved under the other. That’s part of why Andesite represents the dominant rock type in island arcs.
Tumblr media
But here’s our continent- and there’s maybe one little island? This is definitely more of a peninsula than an island arc. And going deeper into the continent’s history we find that there’s been some major changes since the beginning.
Tumblr media
This is the Sleeping Dragon continent before the Shinma War. Obviously this looks nothing like the world we have in-series because this is back when the big shots were fighting it out. The force of power used by both Ceifeed and Shabranidgu in the war was so great, that it destroyed more than half of the original continent, leaving us with the following:
Tumblr media
See that area in the middle/upper right hand corner? That’s our peninsula from the first image. The rest of the world is outside the barrier and not accessible until post-Phibrizzo.
Tumblr media
That’s it. So, obviously no island arcs here. Or subduction zones, being as that giant sea in the middle was battle-made and that’s the main coastline for our series.
So, Andesite is out. Leaving us with the two usual components of Earth’s crust- Granite and Basalt.
Tumblr media
So Granite is pretty cool and all, but there’s a lot of reasons why it just doesn’t cut it for our rock golems. First- by definition, granite is an igneous rock with at least 20% quartz. What that means to us is that there’s a minimum amount of quartz and quartz is…well kind of shiny. Quartz also breaks a certain way called conchoidal fracture that gives it that distinct look you see above- as if someone has scooped out pieces of the rock. Which- well, look back up at the picture of Zel’s hand and the rocks there. Do they look like that? Nope, they don’t. They also don’t have those visible specks that granite has (called its coarse grained matrix).
Okay, so Granite really isn’t working out for us. Let’s look at Basalt.
First where do we find Basalt? Well, mostly the ocean floor. Which doesn’t sound like a good place for rock golems. But they also happen due to Flood Basalt, which can happen due to ancient volcanic activity.
Tumblr media
This is the British Tertiary Volcanic Province. As you might know, there are no active volcanoes in Great Britain today, but there were a long time ago. In these situations large igneous provinces form due to a hot spot or mantle plume making a BIG explosion. And you know- magical chaos between dark lords might just set off such a thing, being as this is often tied to ancient extinction events and they kinda blew out the entire middle continent. This explosion results a large flow of basaltic lava over the land in a flood, leaving behind things like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. And these are the lovely basalt columns that the ancient volcano left behind here and places throughout the world. These structures are predominantly hexagonal in cross-section, but polygons with three to twelve or more sides can be observed. The size of the columns depends loosely on the rate of cooling; very rapid cooling may result in very small (<1 cm diameter) columns, while slow cooling is more likely to produce large columns.
And well…where I have I seen rocks like this before?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hmm. And if we look even closer we’ll see that there are definitely some polygons with three to twelve sides clustered together on a certain someone’s face:
Tumblr media
Basalt, along with coming in the primary colors of Zel’s rocks (gray/dark gray) could have easily formed in the peninsula the series takes place in due to fallout from the Shinma war.And sometimes when it forms, it results in polygonal shapes that are clustered together with small crevices between them. Unlike Granite, Basalt is a fine grained rock giving us the solid as opposed to speckled look. And unlike both Granite and Andesite, Basalt is a tough density rock (it’s average being  3.0 gm/cm3 as opposed to 2.5-2.8 for the others). And yeah, if I was casting a spell to use rock for a golem I’d use strongest one around.
So- long story short, the rocks that make up the small gray extrusions on Zel’s face is probably Basalt. Why? Because science.

Lina DID do a similar thing and use Gaav Flare against Gaav, however it wasn’t just to try to attack him. If the unknown person was Gaav he could cancel it and maybe be distracted enough for Xellos to escape. If it was not Gaav he would get exploded and Xellos might get saved.
Bit of a Slayers rant here: setting portrays Evocation and Hermetic magics fairly well.
In the fight against Shabringo himself she tries to cast Dragon Slayer on him, an Evocation that is powered by a prayer to Shabringo and fuelled by black magic.
Maybe she was scared for her life but she shouldn’t have been surprised it didn’t work as that’s literally asking Shabringo “please can I gave some of your power to destroy you?”

Welcome to the Claire Bible, a discussion blog for The Slayers! Our goal is to compile every discussion point relating to Slayers for easy perusal. Yes, there are wikis and books available, but they are frequently mistranslated or perpetuating fanon rather than the facts that are known. A common example is that some people keep insisting Rezo is both Zelgadis’ grandfather and great-grandfather when it was a simple translation error if Zelgadis being unsure if Rezo was his grandfather OR his great-grandfather.
Also it’s nice to have a place where we, as a slightly obscure fandom, can have our discussions and debates preserved.
