I’ve been SO bad with my planting this year 🤷‍♂️. I still need to separate my tomatoes, thin my flowers, top my peppers and start my gourds, squash, melons, cucumbers and corn 🙃. It’s gonna be a nice weekend. I’ll make it happen

I go to the gym at 4AM. I do this for convenience and to avoid others. But for whatever reason today, Friday, is an absolute shit show. There’s a baby in a stroller and someone just walked in with their fucking teacup something or another dog. Like, what the fuck is today??

The Best Laid Plans Of Mice And Men Often Go Astray
I meticulously planned everything this year to have myself the easiest time possible. I had my projects lined up, my planting scheduled and my livestock accounted for. Well, since then I’ve acquired 20 more egg layers and 2 goats, possibly a 3rd on the way. The layers required me to build a larger run. The goats require me to build a goat shed that I wasn’t necessarily ready to do just yet. Now that we have goats they’re taking what would have been the turkey pen. So now I need to make a new turkey pen, as the turkeys are arriving today…relatively pressing. Because of all of these new things I’ve neglected my water set up for the broiler chickens which will be going on grass full time starting next week. On top of that, 8 trays worth of 3 week old sunflowers blew over yesterday in a mega wind storm so now those need replanted. I also need to start my gourds, cucurbits and corn. I also need to build 2 more doors for the new runs.
These are the times things can get VERY overwhelming and stressful. And they are. And it is. But it’s important to write all of these things down to get a visual sense of what’s to be done and plan accordingly. Most important to least important, even tho it’s all important. I know I can make due with a temporary water set up for the broilers, they’re still small and don’t require as much water as 8 week old birds. The planting can get done in the evenings or early morning on the weekend. The gates don’t take long to build and I can knock 3 of those out any day after work. Plus the runs have gates currently, the new ones are for a second access point for convenience. The goats are housed in the chicken tractor at the moment. The turkeys won’t be going in the tractor for about 4 weeks. So goat shed is priority one. It’ll take me about a week to build it start to finish, as I have a few hours per day after work to work on it.
Everything will get done. Everything will begin to come together and after getting plants in the ground in late May I will have the summer to enjoy all of my hard work until harvest time. Remember folks, farming is fun!!

Cute little birds nest inside a 6’ tall roll of welded wire fencing. Only problem is that I need the fencing. Guess this project will have to wait

So we got goats! A wether and a doe. These two cuties are very skittish at the moment. They had been dropped off in a neighborhood my friend lives in. We checked their tags and they came up as cattle tags. Pretty sure this is a 4H project gone wrong. People suck. Either way, we are super excited to have them on the farm

Coop clean outs means mulch and nutrients for the soil. I would NOT recommend doing this with established layers or older broilers. I can get away with putting bedding directly on garden beds for about 3-4 weeks while the birds are still small and the poop isn’t as big or plentiful

Fresh bedding for the 75 broilers. We’ll be spending one more week solely in this shed and then they’ll be out on pasture

These will sit along the fence in the space between garden beds to maximize growing space. And we all know space in the garden is at a premium

Finally got around to making my pallet potato boxes. These are 14x14 and stackable, so as the potatoes get taller I’ll add another box and bury the foliage so the potatoes produce more tubers.
Pallets are free, which I like. What makes it even better is I reused the nails I pulled out of the original pallets. I absolutely love repurposing stuff. To take an item and give it a second life as something completely different. Can’t beat it
