The Rise of Neo Religion

The religious community has seen a steep decline in attendance in recent years. While church attendance is still higher in this country than it is in any other region of the world, it has taken a noticeable hit since the arrival of the Visitors, many finding it difficult to reconcile their preexisting beliefs with the new and changing world we now live in. Recent reports out of The Zeus Council, one of the nations premier institutes for religious studies, shows that only 5 in 10 people (50%) identify as religious, dropping from 8 in 10 (80%) in the last half decade. And of the percentage of people who identified as no longer religious, about 6 in 10 (60%) cited the arrival of the Visitors as the reason for their departure.

But with many apostates choosing to walk away from their churches, and many churches closing as a result, some churches have found that the only way to keep their doors open is to adapt.

While many religions, such as the Chritani, remain staunchly against the integration of the Visitors into our societies, seen in the widespread creation of Chritani Against Visitors chapters, some churches have taken a different approach. Churches like His Great Ascension, have worked the arrival of the Visitors into their current understanding of their religious texts. We spoke with Marshall Arellano, head deacon of His Great Ascension.

“The bible tells of the story of creation, and says that god created the earth, the water, the plants, the animals, and the people. But as we well know, there are many more things that exist in the world than that,” says Arellano, “it is not out of the realm of possibility that other things were created, and just weren’t mentioned in the scripture. Perhaps because of relevance, perhaps the text is incomplete, who knows? You know we always say ‘god works in mysterious ways.’”

Arellano says that their willingness to discuss Visitors in an accepting way that still upholds the beliefs of many of his parishioners is what has allowed the doors of His Great Ascension to remain open.

Arellano continues, “the prophets before could never have imagined the type of world we live in today, there are things that, even before the Visitors, would have seemed like wonders to them. The stories and allegories of the past must be brought into the context of today, because we live in a different world entirely, than they did.”

And while churches like His Great Ascension have taken to reinterpreting their existing texts, we have also seen theists having a more extreme reaction– completely discarding their old religious texts in lieu of creating new ones with Visitors as their main focus. As opposed to Chritani Against Visitors’ adamant anti-Visitor views, churches like the Temple of the Divine Visit have instead taken to Visitor worship, declaring our fourth-dimensional habitués their new holy overlords.

“They’re large, unknowable beings, who can see everything at once and can be anywhere in an instant. How could they be anything but gods?” Says Mackenzie Tucker, one of the founding members of the Temple of the Divine Visit. “And more importantly to us, they’re here. We can see them, speak to them, touch them. Which is more than what we can say about the old god that we worshiped.”

Tucker tells us that Divine Visit membership has seen a large uptick as of late, due largely in part to the exodus of ex-evangelicals from their previous institutions, but also for another, more unexpected reason.

“We’ve actually also had many people join the temple as a form of activism.” Tucker says. “You know, the government has been pushing things like Visit-1705, and the people in support of that are, you know, arming themselves against the Visitors and becoming more and more hostile. And it’s legal. It’s all legal because Visitors aren’t citizens. So we’re gaining members, and since religious freedom is protected under the constitution, more and more people are joining the temple as a way to garner protections for our Visitors, to make these attacks against them unconstitutional. We’re all for it here.”

Between growing feelings of alienation from the long standing religious institutions, and the compelling philosophical and political arguments being put forth by the nouveau religious organizations, it seems as though the popularity of these neo-religions will continue to rise in the years to come.

Whether this was a legitimate blunder on the part of Subcontinental, or an intentional leak to garner hype for the film has yet to be seen. See the script here

Robles: Good evening from the Biological Health School of the University of College, New Townsend campus. I am Jinx Robles with The Center News and I am pleased to welcome you all to the first of XX50 presidential debates between Presidential Candidate Franklin Vaughn and Presidential Candidate Rhys Lowell. This debate is sponsored by the Presidential Debate Commission. The debate format is as follows: two 10-minute segments with two minute answers from each candidate to the initial question, then open discussion for the rest of each segment. This will be followed by two minute closing statements. Both parties have agreed to these rules. As the moderator I have decided the the topics and the questions in each topic. None of the questions have been shared with the Commission or with the candidates.

The audience attending has promised to remain silent. No cheers, no boos, or other interruptions, so that we all can focus on what the candidates have to say. At this time, we welcome Harmonic nominee Rhys Lowell, and Contraharmonic candidate Franklin Vaughn.

Vaughn: Hello Rhys.

Lowell: Mr. Vaughn.

Robles: Candidates, let’s get started. Our first subject is the introduction of the proposed Visit-1705 bill. For our audience, proposition Visit-1705 proposes an increase in the military spending budget for the creation of a surveillance of Visitors taskforce. Mr. Vaughn, you have been outspoken in your approval of the proposition, while Ms. Rhys you have been outspoken in your disapproval. Would you care to elaborate on why you hold those stances? We’ll start with you, Mr. Vaughn. You have two minutes.

Vaughn: Yes, well I believe it is quite simple why I think what I do: It is the only opinion on the matter that makes sense for our citizens. We support our military, we support all the men in our–and women– we support all the men and women who wear our country’s uniform and we want them to have the most money they can so that they can do their job of protecting our citizens. It makes sense for our military to do surveillance on potential threats. The Visitors are potential threats. We don’t know what they can do or where they could be. They could be planning anything. So we need to be on guard. It is just what is in the best interest for protecting our citizens. We’re putting the citizens first. I think 1705 would be the best step towards putting citizens first.

Robles: Thank you, Mr. Vaughn. Ms. Lowell, the same question to you. You have two minutes.

Lowell: Thank you, Mx. Robles. I am staunchly against proposition Visit-1705 for many reasons. Firstly, as much as I appreciate all people serving in our military, our military budget is already the highest in the entire world. We already have the latest technologies and top of the line equipment and with the current budget our military is sufficiently funded to fight world war three, four, even five times over. Our military budget is at a level that is absolutely unheard of, especially for peacetime. Which brings me to my second point. We are in peacetime. Contrary to what some people will want you to believe, we are not at war with our Visitors. No, they are not citizens, but this does not mean they are our enemy. This country was founded by immigrants, with no citizenship ties to this land, and we were allowed to build foundations here because those immigrants were welcomed and embraced by the native inhabitants of this land, despite the threat these immigrants posed. And then, those foundations were built off the back of people who were not allowed to be citizens, people who were just barely considered people. We look back on that history now and know that it was the goodwill of the native citizens that allowed us to prosper. We also look back and know how wrong it was to deny someone their personhood. So yes, it is true the Visitors are not citizens, but they are no less a part of this country. They contribute to this country just as the citizens do, and their lack of citizenship is something that can be changed with some simple legislation–

Vaughn: I wouldn’t call that simple–

Lowell: Can I finish?

Robles: Mr. Vaughn, please let Ms. Lowell continue her argument uninterrupted. Ms. Lowell, an additional 15 seconds has been added to your time.

Lowell: Thank you. Thirdly, I’d like to argue that the passing of proposition 1705 would not be in the best interest of our citizens, even going so far as to say it would harm a large portion of them.

Robles: And that’s time. We are now in open discussion.

Vaughn: Okay, open discussion. I will start. First I want to say that it would not be easy legislation to make the Visitors citizens. It would be near impossible to legislate. Actually impossible.

Lowell: How?

Vaughn: It would be, it would be impossible.

Lowell: Yes, but why would it be impossible? Are you not going to answer my question?

Vaughn: No, it is not worth elaborating on. It is simply impossible.

Lowell: But isn’t the point of this? To argue our points? You made a point and you’re not going to defend it?

Vaughn: Secondly–

Lowell: Okay.

Vaughn: Secondly, I’d like to know how increasing the budget of the people who protect our country would hurt our citizens? You said it would harm our citizens, how would it do that.

Lowell: It would be readily apparent how it harms citizens, had you actually spent time reading the legislation you back. The issue at hand is not the increasing of the budget–though I feel I have sufficiently explained my opinion on that–the issue lies in the creation of this taskforce. The exact wording of the proposition states that it will “create a taskforce dedicated to the surveillance of creatures of interdimensional origin, known colloquially as “Visitors,” as well as their known or suspected human affiliates.” This last line is the key. Known or suspected human affiliates. This means that this task force will be observing our citizens just living their daily lives, scrutinizing who they spend their time with. And couldn’t anybody be deemed a suspected affiliate? Even beyond my disagreement on how this proposition unfairly affects our Visitors, it opens the door to making this country a constant surveillance state. The people of this country deserve a right to privacy.

Vaughn: A right to privacy? At the expense of their safety?

Lowell: “Safety” from an invented threat. There is no research that shows that people are being intentionally harmed by our Visitors, and there is plenty of research that shows that adapting, and using the proper protection when interacting with Visitors significantly decreases the cases of accidental injury–

Vaughn: The proper protection is the protection that would be afforded by our military.

Lowell: Don’t interrupt me. And furthermore proper education would significantly decrease the intentional antagonizing of Visitors that our citizens perform out of fear.

Vaughn: That fear is justified.

Lowell: It truly is not, and people who are actually educated on our Visitors would know that.

Robles: I’m going to call time. And the topic of education will bring us to our next question. Our next question is about proposition Visit-1799. For our audience, this proposition proposes the introduction of Visitor studies into K-12 schools. Ms. Lowell you have shown your support for the proposition while Mr. Vaughn you have shown your disapproval. Can you please elaborate on your stances. We’ll have you go first Mr. Vaughn, you have two minutes

Vaughn: Yes. I think that 1799 is a terrible proposal. Truly terrible. What Visit-1799 is proposing is a complete reworking of the education system, to include anti-human propaganda and pro-invader propaganda. And let’s call them what they are, they’re invaders. All it is is propaganda, to try and indoctrinate our children into hating the human race. Their race. We have a chance now to come together as humans, a united front–

Lowell: That’s rich.

Robles: Ms. Lowell–

Vaughn: –against a common enemy. In opposing Visit-1799, we can ensure that our children are not being taught to hate themselves, and recognize the human race as the great race that it is.

Robles: Mr. Vaughn, you’ll be allowed an additional 5 seconds for the interruption.

Vaughn: Not necessary, I’ve said what I needed to.

Robles: Okay, Ms. Lowell, the same question is posed to you, can you please explain the reasoning behind your stance in support of Visit-1799? You have two minutes.

Lowell: Yes, thank you. This bill is not a matter of them against us. Educating the next generation on relevant current events is not the same thing as indoctrinating them. Learning to embrace our Visitors is not teaching children to “turn against humans.” As I’ve stated before, we are not at war. This does not have to be a fight and thus there are no enemies. And to say otherwise is nothing short of fear mongering. We should not try and “unite” people under a threat that doesn’t exist. While there are concerns and reservations that are valid to have in regard to our Visitors, the fear that learning about Visitors, their culture, and how to interact with them in a way that minimizes the harm caused to all parties involved, would somehow diminish the pride that human beings have in themselves is completely unfounded. Anyone who is against educating the next generation is someone who wants ignorant people who are easy to manipulate. I believe it is imperative to give our children true and accurate education, so when they grow to be voting age they can make informed decisions on the policies that will affect the society in which they live.

Robles: And that’s time. Thank you both. We will now enter open discussion. Since Ms. Lowell ended us off, we will start with Mr. Vaughn.

Vaughn: Okay, I want to say that Visit-1799 is indoctrination. The textbook definition of indoctrination.

Lowell: Right, and what exactly is that definition?

Vaughn: It is. It’s indoctrination. There is nothing wrong with our education system as it is, our current education system has produced some of the greatest minds in the world, and that is without people trying to push this, this, anti-human agenda.

Lowell: You never answered my question, you said it was the textbook definition of indoctrination, but can’t tell me what indoctrination is. It’s as if you don’t know what the word means.

Vaughn: I do.

Lowell: I don’t think you do. I can tell you though, it means to teach a doctrine to imbue a biased point of view. And I think that by the language you use to describe our Visitors, you show a clear bias against them.

Vaughn: You have bias too, everyone has bias.

Lowell: I never said I didn’t. But I believe that children should have access to all of the facts, so that they can form their own biases.

Vaughn: So you want to teach everything to students? You don’t think there are topics that are inappropriate for students? Next you’ll say you want them to learn how to build pipe bombs and how to cook meth.

Lowell: Wow, that is an absolutely insane non sequitur.

Vaughn: That’s what you’re saying.

Lowell: It absolutely is not–

Robles: (crosstalk) If I could–

Vaughn: It is. It is what you’re saying–

Lowell: –and I’d appreciate it if you didn’t try and put words in my mouth.

Vaughn: I am just stating the obvious about what you and yours are trying to–

Robles: Okay, open discussion is now finished. We’ll go into closing statements now. We can start with you Ms. Lowell.

Lowell: Thank you, Mx. Robles. I want to finish this off by saying that we should not let our decisions be dictated by fear. It should be dictated by the truth, and as president I guarantee that I will provide the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, to the people of this country. As the president I want to foster a society full of acceptance, and one free of unfounded fear. It has been shown, time after time, that it is the unity and diversity that makes this country the great nation that it is, not division.

Vaughn: I am the candidate for tradition. I am the candidate for people. I am the candidate for humans, and as president, I will always put humans first. As the president I will make this country human again. Thank you.

Tanya B. asks: Hey Ashley, my girlfriend and I have been together for 3 years now; we’ve talked about getting married and I want to propose, but I haven’t yet because I’m worried that she wants to be the one to propose! Should I just keep waiting? Should I propose anyway? Help!

Ashley says: This is something I believe can be solved with clear, explicit communication. You can ask your girlfriend if she wants to be proposed to or if she wants to propose. If you want it to be more of a surprise there are ways that you can be a little more lowkey about it, like showing her one of those cute wholesome proposal videos, and saying “how would you react to a proposal like that?” or something along those lines. Good luck Tanya!

Anonymous asks: My coworker keeps making unsolicited comments about my body, saying that I’m inviting his comments by wearing “revealing” outfits (I dress business casual, we work in an office). AITA for stapling his hand to my desk last time he came over to talk to me? My friends say that I’m in the right but I feel kinda bad.

Ashley says: Nope! If he didn’t want his hand stapled, he shouldn’t have approached your desk. Or he should’ve known better than to leave his hands so exposed, he was basically inviting a staple through the hand.

Trevor D. asks: Hi Ashley, I love my boyfriend a lot, but sometimes when we argue he lashes out and yells at me. He always apologizes immediately afterwards and I always forgive him because I can tell he genuinely feels bad about it. I think he acts that way because it’s how his parents argued when he was growing up. I told him that maybe he should start going to therapy to help him cope with his feelings, but he seemed to be upset with me for suggesting it, and now is acting kind of distant and is giving me the silent treatment. Did I do something wrong? I could really use some opinions on the whole situation, thanks.

Ashley says: No Trevor, you didn’t do anything wrong. Sometimes couples have issues that can’t be solved on their own, and it’s very strong of you to recognize when you need some outside help. To me it seems that lashing out in anger is so ingrained in your boyfriend that it’s become a part of who he is, a part of his personality, so much so that the thought of getting help with that issue feels like a threat to his personhood. It also could stem from a feeling of shame on his end, at not being able to handle his emotions without external help. In either case, it may be beneficial to let him know that you understand that he may need some space to process what he’s thinking, but it’s hurting you to be ignored. If he does genuinely feel bad when he hurts your feelings, this should at the very least restart the dialogue between you too. And when he’s ready to talk, let him know that you love him, that you just want to see him be the best version of himself, and that there’s no shame in getting help. I hope everything works out for you two!

Rose O. asks: I need some advice Ashley, my boyfriend and I have been dating for a little over a month now, and things have been going really well! He’s kind and thoughtful and sweet, we really hit it off and it seemed like we were on the same page about a lot of our opinions, that is until just recently. I just found out not too long ago that he donates monthly to one of those anti-Visitor organizations, I can’t remember what it was called but it’s one of those organizations that holds rallies and does research into anti-Visitor weapons. This just kind of blindsided me because I’m a member of The Welcome Committee, and I’m very vocal about it. I’ve definitely mentioned it to him before and he never said anything. I like him a lot, but I don’t know how I feel about dating someone whose views are so opposite to mine. What should I do? Do you think I could change his opinion?

Ashley says: This is something that you two will need to sit down and have a serious talk about. When it comes to the subject of Visitors, what you think of them is less of an opinion and more of a core moral value, which is not something that two people in a relationship can afford to disagree on. Figure out exactly where he stands, and take that at face value. If you’re not okay with who he tells you he is, then it may be time to call it quits. Don’t attempt to change him, because for all you know, he might be thinking the same thing about you, trying to figure out a way for you to agree with his opinions, the same way you’re trying to get him to agree with yours. If your entire relationship consists of you trying to change the other person you’re with, you don’t really want to be with that person, you want to be with someone else, and it will ultimately leave both of you unhappy. Understanding Visitors: A Scientific Approach

The Visitors have undoubtedly changed what we know about ourselves and our world. Their existence is something that had previously only been mere speculation or the topic of science fiction, so their sudden arrival and subsequent integration into our lives have turned things upside down. Their understanding of the natural world is far beyond that of human beings', and many scientists posit that understanding Visitors themselves could be the key to deepening our own well of knowledge when it comes to the natural world. So we spoke with Dr. Monet Cornish, one of the nation's top scientists and a liaison for Visitor relations, to get some insight into some of the most frequently asked questions about Visitors. Here are our questions and what she had to say:

Q: What are Visitors?

A: Visitors are beings that are able to navigate our world in four dimensions, three of which they share with us and the fourth being, presumably but not conclusively, time.

We, admittedly, do not know much about the visitors when it comes to things like anatomy. Since we, as humans, can only view things within the three dimensional space that we occupy, we cannot actually perceive the Visitors in their entirety. Rather, what we refer to as the Visitors' bodies is just a three dimensional projection that is comprehensible to the human mind. While their projections are human shaped, we cannot say with complete certainty that they share the same anatomical characteristics as humans do.

While we have spoken to Visitors on the topic of how they function biologically, we can not comprehend enough of their terminology for the information to have contributed much to our understanding.

No operations– neither live nor post mortem (as we are unsure if they can die) – have been performed on a Visitor to glean information through that method.

Q: Where did the Visitors come from?

A: This is another question with an answer we are not entirely sure of.

From what we were able to understand of the conversations we have had with the Visitors, they have always existed in the same universe as us, just on a different plane. The most recent and strongest theory is that they, as four dimensional beings, are able to control which three dimensions their projection exists in, and have just recently shifted from a dimension we can not perceive into one that we can.

Q: Why are they here?

A: We believe they may be refugees.

We know that it has something to do with the politics in the dimension that they were in before our own, but we are unsure of what exactly the situation is. I often have a hard enough time understanding our own politics, let alone the complex political climate of a race of unfathomable four dimensional beings!

Q: Are we safe?

A: Yes and no.

Yes, in the sense that you are highly unlikely to be approached by a Visitor in a malicious way. We've found that they, generally, have a very unobtrusive temperament, and will not be aggressive or violent without provocation.

No, in the sense that there definitely can be some adverse effects of being around Visitors if you're not careful. Physical reactions such as headaches, nausea, epistaxis, tinnitus, etc. are not uncommon. You are dealing with something our minds were never built to understand, after all. That's why we always say to remember F.E.M. It stands for Face Covered, Eyes Averted, Mind Sound. It will help assuage some of the physical symptoms you may get.

There's also the risk of damage to personal property; things electronic and mechanical such as phones, hearing aids, computers, radios, and televisions have been known to malfunction while in close proximity to a Visitor.

But I implore you to ask yourself, are we ever safe? Aren't we always in danger from one thing or another? Can't any of the aforementioned issues be caused by many other things in everyday life? I don't say this to make anyone paranoid about just living life, but instead to emphasize the fact that everything we do comes with some risk factor. There is no need to approach Visitors with any more fear or wariness than the typical amount reserved for the horrors of day to day existence.

So there we have it! Some questions answered and some fears laid to rest. As we progress into the future, we hope that the addition of the Visitors will afford us some clarity, furthering our understanding of our own world and the way that we exist in it.

Taking “Blind Date” to a New Level

While many enjoy the convenience of getting to know someone through a screen, there are some who mourn the loss of the methods of the bygone era. And then there are some like Tatianna Nelson, today's person of interest, who have fallen back into the more traditional form of dating, but have added their own modern twist.

We caught up with Tatianna at Hello Brewtiful, her favorite coffee shop, and the location where she had her first date with her current partner, Juke.

"Online dating can be so discouraging. You swipe and don't match with someone that you wanted to, or you do match and then have a lukewarm conversation, then one of you ghosts the other. It's not exactly an exciting experience."

Tatianna told us that she had been using online dating apps for years without any success, and could not figure out why she wasn't having the same luck as her peers, many of whom have found their lifelong partners through dating apps.

"I thought I was broken. Like maybe my brain was just wired differently and that was why I just couldn't for the life of me make any genuine connections with people I met online."

She also expressed that she struggled with finding dates the "organic way."

"It's stressful, you know? Because nine times out of ten, any guy that just approaches you when you're out and about and asks you to go out with him is like, one stabbing away from being Ted Bundy. And then my friends would try and set me up with their friends and– not to be rude to any of my friends because I love them, I really do– but they've got some...questionable tastes in friends. They're friends with me, that should tell you all you need to know!" She laughs.

Tatianna said that everything changed when she realized that the issue she was having wasn't just with her dating methods, it was also with her dating pool.

"I sat down and thought to myself "alright girl, what's the deal? What's the real problem we're having here?" And then I had an epiphany! I came to the realization that the issues I was having...they were such human problems, weren't they? And well, I can't exactly stop being human, but I could certainly stop dating them!"

Tatianna says her whole life changed when she started dating Visitors.

"Of course I couldn't find them online, with the effect they have on technology, you really have to meet them face to face. So it was partially where I was looking for dates and partially who I was dating."

When asked what the draw of dating a Visitor was, she replied, "they're actually amazing conversationalists when you can understand them. They've seen and they know so much more than we do, so they've truly got some interesting stories to tell. "

Tatianna tells us that she'd gone on three dates with three different Visitors, which she enjoyed even though they didn't work out, before meeting Juke.

"I call them Juke, because when they told me their actual name it made me black out for a moment. But they're really super sweet! Very intelligent and the projection of them that I'm able to actually comprehend? Super hot."

She then tells us of her future plans to grow in her relationship with Juke.

"I've been talking to some doctors about the legality of undergoing a surgery to remove my optical nerves. Really trying to give a new meeting to the idea of "blind dating." She joked.

"I have been so happy with Juke, but one point of contention in our relationship is the fact that well, with them being fourth dimensional, and our brains not being built to comprehend that, being around them is doing actual, physical damage to my brain. I think that with this surgery, with less sensory input always coming in, I'd be able to be around them more comfortably. Juke doesn't think that it's worth it for me to do that for them, but I do."

When asked what she would do if she underwent the surgery, but things did not work out with Juke, she replied "Well fingers crossed that's not something I'll ever have to worry about, but I still think it'd be beneficial in the long run. Even if things don't work out with Juke, I still have a preference for dating Visitors. I don't think I could go back to dating humans at this point!" She laughed.

While many optical surgeons would refuse to do the surgery that Tatianna is requesting, it is not unheard of for cosmetic surgeons to perform, on the grounds that it is "a surgery that changes the way you look," a technicality that has been exploited in the past by patients looking to save some money on optical surgery, and by cosmetic surgeons looking to make some extra money.

"The surgery is a long term goal," she continued, " but for now I just wear a blindfold to most of our dates. It doesn't solve the problem completely, but it does help a little."

When asked if she could recommend dating Visitors or if this was just a personal choice for her, Tatianna replied, "One hundred percent I would recommend it. Being able to sit face to face and connect with someone that way is definitely worth some of the roadblocks it comes with. Definitely preferable to online dating, in my opinion."

So there you have it folks. If you find yourself missing the way things used to be, reminiscing about the good old days of face to face dating, but struggle to find people who share the same sentiments as you in the age of online dating, maybe take a page out of Tatianna's book.
