Random therory/speculation about the digital circus

The characters are just copies of their minds (like in Soma), explaining they can be trapped without anyone noticing or their bodies withering away in the real world. Which is why they can never leave. Their real self may not even know they exist. Perhaps the reason they don't have any memories from before is because of the limitations of the simulation (can't copy memories or something). That would make abstraction more like a form of data corruption where the code breaks (this explains why their physical form gets abstracted aswell instead of them just going crazy)

Idk I think it's an interesting possibility
