Mystery Bridge Nr. 215
Marty Smith brought this mystery bridge up to my attention recently when he submitted a pair of photos via Messenger. They were taken by his grandfather from a long time ago, who originated from Patolka in Marion County, Illinois. According to him, this may have spanned the Wabash River, even though the river is located much towards the middle than in the western part of the state, towards St.…

Pittsburgh has one of the highest number of bridges in the world, ranking it up there with Hamburg, Berlin (Germany) and Venice (Italy), with over 2000 structures. It is also a treasure chest when it comes to structures originating from different eras, each one having a history. But each bridge is a photographer’s dream as it can be photographed from different vantage points and at any time of…

BHC Pic of the Week Nr 285
This week’s Pic of the Week takes us back to 2018. It was at that time my family and I visited Mackinac Island and took a grand opportunity to photograph this iconic bridge, the Big Mac. Built in 1957, the five mile long bridge was built to replace the ferry that had shuttled passengers between the Upper Peninsula with St. Ignace, and the Lower Peninsula with Mackinaw City. It was the masterpiece…

One of the readers not only solved the mystery of that bridge, but also found a Google…

Postcard Friday Nr. 26
Another postcard, another painting and another drawbridge for this week’s feature. The difference here are two fold. The bridge featured here is a double leaf bascule bridge spanning a waterway, most likely a wider one. The second are the cherry trees that are blooming in white and pink. When this postcard was produced many years ago (my estimate is 40-50 years ago) the artist used spring as its…

As capital of Hungary, Budapest is famous for its unique bridges. It has 15 crossings in total; 11 of them can be found along the River Danube. And of these 11, four of them are considered very popular- enough to appear on postcards and memorabilia: The Chain Suspension Bridge, the Liberty Cantilever Bridge, the Elisabeth Suspension Bridge and the Margaret Bridge which is the only Danube crossing…
