It's been months now, and every once in a while I still stop whatever I'm doing and just think how

The crew didn't just make Izzy a new leg. That alone would have been so kind of them. But they didn't stop at making him a decent serviceable prosthetic.

They made it pretty.

Even though they didn't know if Izzy would appreciate it. Even though they probably suspected Izzy didn't care much for pretty. He was all for practical. He would have been perfectly content with a basic, practical wooden leg.

But the crew chose to put extra time and effort into it. They wanted to make it pretty for him. So that it wouldn't just be something he begrudgingly wore because he had no other choice, but something precious he could wear with pride and joy. Something he would treasure.

I want to believe he kept the note on him every day, just like he did with the ring. And after his death the crew found it. And then they knew exactly how much this had meant to him.

This is such a great line because it frames so much of what Stede is looking for. At first he doesn’t understand what’s being said at all, then he tries to integrate it into his pirate fantasy as “the gentleman pirate.”

Stede is looking to feel something. His whole project is to try to be the “real man” he thinks he’s failed at being. He’s scared of the violence he has to face and commit, he’s guilt-ridden over killing to protect his crew (even by accident). He’s not actively seeking death, but he’s not convinced that he actually wants to live. At least if he dies a pirate he’ll have felt something before it happens. To feel, as a man, means violence. To have an adventure means it will end in death.

Then he meets Ed, and what he feels is something both gentle and intense. It’s warmth and laughter and fun and tenderness. He feels accepted and understood. Stede has failed to fit into the mold of a “real man” but what he discovers is that are other, better ways of being a man. Those emotions are realer than the violence he thought he was seeking. He finds his adventure and it’s Ed.
