She wouldn’t necessarily consider herself overly keen, but she is the first one to arrive, laptops ( it was considerably easier to disperse her differing subjects on to two separate screens, one currently streaming the trench ) and notebooks ornately spread along her makeshift work station, since during movement in the Breach convening in the main K-Science lab was basically an unwritten rule. It was just a simpler way of keeping everyone on the same page.
Then Newt comes crashing through the threshold. Almost literally.
Tumblr media
“ Way ahead of you, ” she says, gesturing with her favourite novelty mug that read 'I HEART GEOLOGY' after taking a sip out of it to the kitchen behind her. It’s three o’clock in the morning — caffeine is the only way to survive during this hours. She’s quick to fulfill his next request, something she was just about to do herself. Unfortunately the remote is two inches too far from her reach, and she exits her seat for a moment to seize it and press the power button.
Of all the languages she failed to become fluent in, Japanese was one of them, which means if she wants to gather anything from this broadcast, she has to watch it, instead of comparing the influx of seismic data from past quadruped and Category III emergences. It’s only half of her job, so her frustration level is low; the same could certainly not be said about the other scientist in the room. “ You’re not gonna explode, are you? ” Because honestly he looks like a time bomb right now, which is why her tone is nothing but concern. Like always, she probably should have kept her mouth shut, though.
“Okay, okay, I’m here, sorry–”
He’s spent most of the dash there struggling between holding the laptop open to keep the updates flooding in or to just tuck it under his arm for his own convenience. Of course, it’s nearly slipped out of his hands multiple times, but it’s worth it.
Newt had managed to throw on his clothes, but was otherwise completely disheveled, his hair and glasses – it always took him a while to get out of bed anyway, and at three o’clock in the morning without any further notice, with panic the only thing keeping him actually awake, it was even harder.
“Can someone please get some coffee going?” It’s obvious he doesn’t really need it–he’s moving a mile a minute, finding volumes from shelves in the corner. His screen couldn’t handle the combination of the stream from the trench, the half-dozen PDFs he had put together and saved on quadruped Kaiju behavior and biology, and three extra volumes, one of which he was sure Hermann had put together and placed on the shelf as a hint. “And–turn on the news, please. This live stream is garbage.”

She makes sure to hold the papers close to her chest, arms wrapping around herself like a straitjacket ( just as tightly as one too ). She was definitely not going to take anymore chances with them. She shakes her head when he answers her question, and a brief laugh escapes her lips.
“ Geez, of course it’s opposite of Hong Kong, because how could it not be? ” she says, her tone thick with sarcasm before she continues, “ It’s just a force of habit for me to go the other way from LOCCENT, and I’ve been walking in circles. ” She knew full well she was making this out to be a sore first impression, building herself up to be a clumsy, babbling idiot in the span of five minutes. It’s probably a new record.
She feels even worse when she remembers the styrofoam cup of tea he mentions, and she so clearly ruined that. She’s nonetheless relieved that she was apparently not far from her destination, and the fact that she gets at least a few more minutes to alter his probable negative view on her. For a few moments she walks in silence next to him before she sputters out her inarticulate apology.
Tumblr media
“ I’m really sorry about that. About the tea I mean. Like, really really sorry. ” she contemplates adding another ‘really’ in there, but three seemed like a sufficient number. “ I’m Scotia, by the way, ” because now seemed as good a time as any to actually introduce herself, even if her path in the future would likely not converge with his again. Well, if this continues in a pathetic direction for her she wants to bank on that being the case. “ I’m a geologist for K-Science. ”
It takes every ounce of self control not to smile as he follows, a silent guard keeping up with a bundle of awkward looks and steps through empty hallways; because of course he notices. But says nothing. Dimas is no longer a boy with no filter to his mouth, he does have some manners, contrary to popular belief. At least the papers are there to provide a distraction, as small as it may be.
He does not spare them a glance, however. Instead, as he waits for her outside the bathroom, his thoughts derail into familiar chaos— at least until her voice disrupts his peace.
Once the folder is in her smaller hands ( safe for now hopefully, but he wouldn’t count a victory just yet ), he places his hands behind his back and allows his lips to curve into a light grin. “Well. As far as I know, K-Science is exactly in the direction where you came from. I wouldn’t say you were entirely lost, then,” but yes, she is definitely wandering aimlessly, and quite away from her division. Not that he needs to say that anymore.
“You’re not that far though. I was heading there myself. As soon as I finished my tea, but… the tea is gone.”
Tumblr media
Without a further word, he begins walking.

Now exceptionally more embarrassed from the painfully dreadful joke, she inwardly scolds herself, making a mental note to adapt a better filter for social interactions. It would be nothing short of a godsend if she could achieve that. At least this stranger is gracious enough to pity her with a laugh, and the apology for her belongings.
“ Oh no, it’s fine. The only thing not coming out of this unscathed is my pride. ” she admits, knowing full well of the fumbling scientist stereotype that has a likelihood of finding its way into the ears of non-scientists. The last thing she wants is to instil truth in that. Her hands draw the last few papers near, scooping them up into the final empty folder in her arms. The sheer disorganization of the pile already onsets a hefty migraine. “ What is it, anyway? ” she asks, utterly clueless, but in hopes of being able to determine this strangers position in the PPDC without having to formally ask. She’s genuinely taken aback when the woman offers her a hand up, though. Nevertheless, she graciously accepts, and pulls herself upright.
Tumblr media
“ I definitely have no qualms about that. I feel like a chicken running around with my head cut off trying to find the labs, ” she confesses, eyes drifting frivolously about the area to patronize her curiosity of the unfamiliar surroundings ( even though the Shatterdome only looks marginally different at certain ends ). “ It’s probably just the horrible concoction of a new threat and relocation. ”
She’d helped her the best she could, but found herself a little too nervous to really interfere. Knowing her luck, she would probably send another section flying down the hall. Instead, she strapped the bag across herself, tightening it so the sword would be flush with her back–the way it was supposed to be carried, but she was usually too lazy to do it properly.
“ No, no impaling. ” She laughed nervously–perhaps a little louder than the joke really warranted, but she had a feeling the other woman understood. Or so she hoped. ( Still the second scientist she’d embarrassed herself in front of that day. Next she’d spill a drink on the head of the research division, knowing her luck. ) She gestured to the bag across her shoulder, and added –  “ Sorry if I jabbed you with this thing. Still hurts even if it’s in the bag. ”
Angie stood up, extending a hand out towards the woman to help her up. “ I usually have better control myself. Today’s just been kind of a mess, you know? ”

“ Yeah, I mean, we’re getting somewhere with it. We definitely know more than we did before, ” and she’s going to leave it at that. Well, she’s going to try her darnedest to. To say she was merely objective with her profession was such an understatement. She absolutely loves what she does. It took a few years to dawn on her that her work in the labs was just as helpful toward the war efforts as the Rangers strapping into Jaegers and delivering blows to every Kaiju emerging from the Breach.
She’s definitely surprised when this guys courtesy extends even farther into their supposedly fleeting encounter. Doe-eyed, she offers a curt nod of affirmation while she struggles to locate a simple verbal one.
Tumblr media
“ I, um — yeah, thank you... again, ” Scotia hands him the folder and pivots on her heel to swing herself in the opposite direction, countenance descending into a cringe to end all cringes. If she wasn’t so unbelievably awkward at every waking moment ( who is she kidding, it’s an unshakable curse that’ll haunt her forever ). She’s thankful that her gait is steady while it takes her to one of the clearly marked bathrooms. Yeah, sure, they label those of course.
She tugs her shirt sleeve down to reveal what is possibly the worst paper cut she’s ever inflicted upon herself when she approaches the sinks. She turns on the tap with her other hand and winces when she runs the injured one under the warm water. God, it stings like a bitch. Hopefully there was still some polysporin and band-aids in the first-aid kit in the lab ( if she could ever even find that ). Once the wound is finally clean and gingerly patted dry with a small piece of paper towel, she waltzes back to where her polite stranger still stood.
“ So, you wouldn’t happen to know whether or not I’m on the completely wrong end of the Shatterdome, would you? ” she asks, extending her hands in preparation to take back her mess of papers. At this point there is no shame any more ( not that there was much to begin with ). If she was running into a Ranger, she was most definitely lost. The PPDC preferred to keep the divisions in separate sections of the Shatterdomes, and it was fact that she could not be any farther away from K-Science if she had indeed wandered her way into Ranger territory.
As if it couldn’t get worse for her, he looks up just as paper slices her skin, a small wound yet he knows the pain behind it. Nevertheless he listens as her voice breaks the silence, once again, his hands dragging as many papers over the floor and into his hand.
“ I suppose you’ve found anything good, ” it is more of a question than an affirmation. Him and science, they never really got along. That sort of thing was never meant for him, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand, or try to understand at the very least. Something about Kaiju blue catches his eyes, but he only spares it a quick glance before it joins the rest of the scattered papers now tucked into a small, messy pile.
So much for a warm cup of tea. He picks up the cup, wrinkling his nose as more content drips from it.
Tumblr media
“ Listen. Why don’t I take that, ” Dimas’ eyes dart to the folder in her hand, a stain already covering a good part of it, “ and you go wash your hand. If you do not mind, of course. ”

“ Hey, Kiara, ” Scotia spins a hundred eighty degrees in her chair to further catch her colleague’s attention.
Tumblr media
“ Do you remember where titanium ranks on the Mohs scale? I seriously can never remember. ” Sure, the Internet is at her finger tips, only just having hovered over the keyboard seconds ago, but it’s so goddamn slow she would rather pull her hair out strand by strand then wait for a search result.

3 - 7, 15 & 20. ( Already answered~ )
11. If magic were a thing she would wholeheartedly immerse herself in practising it.
13. Scotia is an only child.
20. Nah, she really just eats whatever she wants and a lot of the time it’s just small meals or snacks whenever she’s feeling hungry because her appetite is so small.
22. Since her parents worked nearly every second of everyday, they sat just a little above average, being able to easily pay for her tuition for University. When she delved into some co-op jobs during her time there, she procured a decent salary, so she was always attaining a comfortable lifestyle, but nothing overtly luxurious. Now with the Kaiju, money hardly mattered any more.

1-4, 6-10, 14-17, 21, 25
1. She barely dreams, and when she does they’re always just fragmented, flashing stills that bear no correlation to each other, or from what she can deduce when she wakes, anything relevant to the current events in her life.
2. She definitely goes for the forgotten, half-eaten tub of nutella and dips into it before grabbing a couple of slices of bread to spread it on to.
3. My characters create themselves so oddly. Scotia was actually the product of a mutant (like X-Men) role play I was doing on another website back in February, who took me forever to find a fitting enough face claim for. She was a little lost and forgotten on me until I saw this group in the “pacific rim rp tag” and ruled out like three characters I was unable to use because I created them for shipping reasons (generalized warning right now: I am shipping trash. Absolute garbage) and was like “OH YEAH REMEMBER THAT SUPER COOL NERD” and did some research on the Pacific Rim Wiki and tah-dah, Scotia Blackwood: you’re (hopefully) favourite Canadian in the Shatterdome.
4. Scotia becomes extremely flustered under intense stress, but keeps it under the surface, even though it’s still festering until keeping it inside isn’t an option any more, and it ignites her irritability and amps up her sensitivity to everything. Questioning her on anything during that time will result in a lot of screaming and crying.
6. She’s reasonably close to her parents. She felt a wedge start between them when she expressed her passion in the subject that wasn’t their field of expertise, and it only widened as she immersed herself in it. Her parents were proud, and still are, but those tinges of disappoint in their voices, and especially their eyes cannot go unnoticed.
7. Scotia is in love with animals — like, all of them. She was never able to attain the chance to own a pet, though, since home was never strictly founded in one place and altered every few months (or less). One thing is for sure, she’s definitely a cat person, and still yearns to be able to have a furry companion at some point in her life.
8. She digs back into the far reaches of the closet for this one, looking for that “I forgot I owned that” outfit she bought months (or years) ago. The farther back in the closet it is, the nicer and newer the pieces are. They’re still very basic though, like a high-waisted pencil skirt and a sheer blouse.
9. Since Scotia is bi-romantic, there is a distinct lack of sexual attraction she has toward others. Besides, she’s never been in one place long enough to even have a friendship last more than a year or two, let alone experience a real relationship.
10. She’s a real stick-in-the-mud about alcohol, never saw the appeal in it.
14. Black. Definitely black.
15. Do safety goggles count? No? Then no, not really; unless on the off chance she’s transferring some samples or chemicals from one lab to another, that could always be potentially hazardous, I guess.
16. In all honesty, her parents don’t care much, and neither does she. They never officially planned to have a child in the first place, so their daughter bringing her significant other over for the first time is far from a big deal or milestone for them. It’s mainly just to be cordial.
17. Despite being a geologist, plants despise her. She used to keep plants around, spent hours on the Internet reading up and putting care instructions into action, but she always did something wrong apparently.
21. It’s difficult. She either doesn’t know when to shut up, or is only able to squeak out a few one word answers and retorts. Carrying a conversation isn’t easy, but taking one over or letting it die is one of her greatest strengths. She honestly tries very hard to be friendly, though.
25. Scotia’s thirty-two, and her birthday is June 15th. She’s not entirely huge on celebrating it, at least not in a big way. She prefers to get a few people together and slough off from work for a day. It’s mostly just about relaxing.

Scotia takes a moment to compose herself while she opts to pick up a few sheets that landed at arm’s-length first. She poured hours into compiling each report and it took only seconds to unravel it. If only the staplers in LOCCENT weren’t always out of staples ( let alone the fact that paper clips were seemingly extinct everywhere except the labs where she kept a stash hidden ).
Fortunately, she was not the only one who was embarrassed by the collision.
Tumblr media
“ Guess we’re all a little pre-occupied, huh? ” Which is poor choice of words because if no one’s pre-occupied, no one’s doing their job. Being a part of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps, anticipating anything was basically the cardinal rule. More or less. It was at least one of them. She tucks a stray chunk of hair behind her ear before finally lending some eye contact to the conversation. “ I’m one hundred percent fine,” she assures before contorting her face uneasily to regard the real issue life was currently presenting her with. “ Can’t say the same about my research results, though. It’s gonna take a while for that to recover. ”
Once a folder and a decent-sized stack of papers meet again, she realizes she nearly forgot to even ask if the other half of the sideswipe ( by the looks of her belongings she was a Ranger... maybe? ) was alright.
“ Are you okay? ” she asks, a teasing smile forming along her lips before she even parts them to speak again. “ I’ve been told I have bony shoulders, just want to make sure I didn’t impale you or anything. ”
And at that moment it officially clicks that she was forever doomed to carry her father’s bad humour for the rest of her life.
“ Oh –  ”
Angie stumbles at the same time, catching herself before she fell rather gracefully–years of being thrown off balance had improved this instinct. Still, her hair still wet from the gym shower she’d had a few hours ago whipped around and left a few strands clinging to her face, forcing herself to look through and see who she’d bumped into.
Oh, no. She couldn’t embarrass herself in front of another scientist today. ( God, she wanted them to think she was cool. ) She steps back, at first afraid she’d knocked her over or something, but realized she’d only knelt down to collect her papers.
Tumblr media
“ No no no, I’m sorry, ” she says, her face flushed apple-red, before she followed her, the bag containing her practice sword falling from her shoulder as she moved down with a padded clatter. Great. “ I – I wasn’t looking where I was going. Are you okay? ”

She’s thankful for his forthright expression of kindness, otherwise she would have merely categorized him as some asshole to be explicitly conscious of evading. He's definitely a Ranger, though ( only Rangers are built like he is ).
“ Oh, uh — thanks, ” she feigns a smile in an honest attempt to procure a real one, but allows it to fade rather quickly as she proceeds to pick up as many pieces as her petite hands can manage, continuously reminding herself she can place them back in order later. While the rustling of paper fills the silence, she finally knows the type of day this is: one of those days. The extensive paper-cut she receives on her right palm further clarifies that. She curses under her breath and yanks her shirt sleeve over it. She’s not going to bother giving it a once over until being devoid of company, even if that meant getting a minimal stain on her favourite shirt.
Then she hears a question she was unable to resist the urge of answering. Even though she’s aware that it was hardly intended to be heard in the first place. She discovers one of the ( now empty ) folders under the disarray of paper in her hand and stuffs them inside.
“ They’re Breach readings, ” she really should just shut her trap now and make it easier for everyone. “ Well, seismic readings actually. ”
Tumblr media
“ A comparison of data from the Japan Trench, and where the previous Breach existed in the Mariana’s Trench. ” There are also some results of tests done on continental and oceanic samples determining the level of Kaiju Blue contamination along various coastal cities in the Pacific lingering somewhere in the mess; but she’s confident that leaving that out will hardly cause a problem.
“ Merda— ”
There are papers flying everywhere, warm tea dripping from the styrofoam cup on his hand and onto his sleeve, on the floor too. Initial surprise and anger is immediately replaced by slight amusement, but only until she kneels and starts apologizing.
Flicking his wrist and watching as droplets of tea fly away, he crouches next to her, and begins gathering as much of the disaster as he can. K-Science? Figures, ( are all of them this clumsy? ) And although most of the text is meaningless to him, his curiosity spikes up.
“ It’s okay. It’s just papers,” some of the fault fell on him too, should’ve looked where he was walking, but he couldn’t bring himself to admit it. “ Let me help you. It will be easier that way, no? ”
Tumblr media
To himself, he whispers “ what is this anyway, ” but they are close enough so she can listen. Ah, well.

A small huff of indignation escapes her lips while she relaxes her muscles, defeated that the restless fidgeting was the only distraction that reigned sufficient when it came to anything medical related. Check-ups, exams, doctors in general ( even though she herself had a PhD — in geology, though )? Far from her cup of tea.

NAME ; BLACKWOOD, SCOTIA
BORN ; June 15th, 1995, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada [32]
K-SCIENCE ; GEOLOGIST
SEXUALITY ; BIROMANTIC
Born to two renowned archaeologist parents, Scotia hardly spent more than a month at a time growing up in Western Canada. Deep down, she wished to be devoid of such an abnormal upbringing, wanting nothing more than to spend her years receiving a consistent education; however, she knew she was lucky, travelling from country to country, drinking in the culture and history her parents were digging up. The constant stimulation was enough to reward her with reading at a high school level by the time she was ten years old. Scotia’s parents were certain their daughter was following in their footsteps, but her path took a slight veer in another direction when her interest in geology piqued and only grew as she coasted into her teenage years. Her passion toward the subject was enough to grant permission from her parents to pursue a degree in and was quickly accepted into Simon Fraser University back home at only sixteen. When the first Kaiju attack hit in 2013, she grew tirelessly involved with her studies in attempts to graduate sooner and study the phenomenon the monsters were wreaking on their soil. Only two years later did the presence of the Kaiju shake up her entire world when Karloff invaded Vancouver, defining her need to join the Pan Pacific Defense Corps becoming a well integrated asset to the K-Science division during the first Kaiju War, and now the beginnings of the second.
TRAITS;

[ ✗ ] perfectionist, opinionated, hesitant

Scotia hates this. Likely more than she was leading on too, and she voices her complaints tirelessly whenever possible to whoever ends up being present. Every Shatterdome is built to be relatively similar, akin to franchise stores; alas, also with the technicality of distinct tweaks and differences in designs. She found the lab earlier, so she’s still banking on the concept of retracing her steps ( if that was even possible ) to get her back there. If there was even a soul roaming these same corridors, she surely would have flagged them down to gather her bearings by now.
Part of the issue lies much in the fact of her attention is focusing elsewhere, eyes downcast at the papers containing the information that requires being input into the system, and definitely should have been entered twenty minutes ago if she was able to escape her aimless and unintentional wandering. Her gaze hovers up and over to the walls, brows furrowing in exasperation when they lack signs and arrows. She was aware this Shatterdome was new, but it was hardly that new.
And then of course she bumps shoulders with the only person she's come across in these lonely ass halls. Unfortunately, a couple folders spill out of her grasp and land ever so gracefully to her feet, each paper cascading about the expanse of the next few feet in front of her. She sighs, deeply, and cranes her neck back briefly to provide the ceiling with a stern look rather than offering it up to her passerby.
Tumblr media
“ I am so, so sorry, ” she apologizes, a slight pang of mortification weaselling its way into her tone, but all the same sincere. Without wasting any time, she kneels down to begin gathering the aftermath of the mini paper hurricane that was currently engulfing the area. “ I’m usually not a gigantic klutz. ”
