You're right, finding things to scrutinize is a silly thing to do. Others might find joy in getting every gritty detail right, but why should we do that when we simply enjoy each other's company? I'm very happy to have you as my Lisa. Writing to you has been something I've deeply enjoyed, and I look forward to it all the time.

I'm glad you got to get a good look at the eclipse!! My friend took a road trip to go see it with friends and got a good look from directly in the path! I was lucky enough to have someone share their eclipse glasses with me while it happened. I wasn't near totality, but it was still very close toward the end (because New England) and looked bizarre and gorgeous!! The way it got cold and dark and quiet all at once is bizarre and sets your brain on edge. You can easily see why people thought the world was ending or that the gods were angry. The animal in you knows something is wrong, just like the birds go to sleep and the moths come out. It really FEELS like something is happening. Truly wild.

I've actually found old photos of people in the 1910s experiencing a similar eclipse, and they had all climbed to the rooftop to watch it just like people did today. Time truly is a flat circle.

my view of the eclipse wasn’t enough to really get dark and chilly, but it was still an Experience. everyone out standing and staring in awe of the same marvel that can only occur on our planet at this time. only earth can do that. i can see how people used to think it was terrifying, but all i can do is be amazed at how lucky i am to be on this planet at this time to see it

to give updates on my embroidery project: the materials have arrived! i now have the thread and the sweatshirt to begin my grim work… and the perfect thing to watch while i work! a physical copy of our source has arrived, which means it’s time to pick apart the bonus content !

Sorry for the delay in writing, every day I fully intended to but never got around to it, and every day my instinct was to check for a response despite knowing there wouldn't be one because it was my turn to write. (What a silly problem to have!) I suppose I might have been a little flustered by your compliments, I didn't know what to say.

I really appreciate your encouragement on my writing. I never thought of it as very evocative before, so I am glad you've found reading my thoughts on these topics to be illuminating. I've also missed writing to you, in both ways. It's like reaching across time and space to reconnect. And writing it in letters makes it feel even more.... not canonical, but real? Like every message I send has a little seal and is down on paper and is tangible, despite all being sent digitally.

Perhaps the human need to want and experience what we can't have is relatable through kinning too. That we see ourselves in others and others having bits of ourselves. That reach across the aisle to touch a world that by all means we can't have, that we don't have, but is ours anyway, in their infinitesimal variations like millions of dimensions of cracked and shattered mirrors, all the same but different. I have never met a sourcemate before, or at least one that has shared a canon, so there has always been that little touch of disconnect. The feeling of "Oh you're [name] but you're not *my* [name]." The same, but different. Like meeting an alternate version of your best friend. They're your best friend still, but something feels off no matter what you do.

But I don't feel that way with you. I don't presume to be canonmates, perhaps I don't want to get my hopes up should we disagree down the line, but I do feel like it's the closest I've ever been to finding one. I appreciate it. I appreciate you! And I look forward to your letters.

I like to talk about horror, and human nature, and source and kin and the nature of kin. I love to talk about history and its effects on everything around us, including media and the way it twists over time to change our meanings and how we relate to one another. What one era might consider, another might take the opposite, and why and how it does so is just as thrilling and important as the now and how we view it. Cracked mirrors and all.

It's funny, despite living in New England all my life I don't think I could ever tire of it. The town I grew up in has a church from the 1780s. One of the many places George Washington stayed is nearby. I grew up in graveyards and old buildings and sinking my arms as deep as they could in the Weird and the Old and the Dark. It makes me unbelievably happy. (It helps that I run warm too, it makes a world of difference to be in a cooler area!) It is funny that we have Wild West Towns and you have Winter Villages when the weather is so opposite. It has a weird cognitive dissonance I think, that makes it humorous. A very dry fake snow covered place at 90 degrees while we have a Fake Desert covered in Real Snow. Why are humans like this I wonder, besides the novelty of what we Don't Have? Like a Medieval Times despite not ever having a european medieval period in America.

I recently watched Bones and All, and while I'm not sure about how well it measured up to the book, I absolutely ADORED it. The metaphor is not lost on me and there is something so jarring and so good about it. I actually do recommend the film, I think I know which actor you speak of and despite not liking them much either their work was really good in this film in particular. I loved making it a bit more of a 1980s period piece to give everything this distance from our current world, and also the narrative the movie is trying to pull opposed to the book. It makes the story make a bit more sense as a movie, in its own way? I'm not someone turned away by cannibalism, so it's not such a weird conept to me. I don't think I'd play a reluctant cannibal character if I was.

I'm so glad we are on the same page about these sorts of stories! Its like getting back to the roots of many of these horror genres, how they turn back into these stories with metaphors about humanity. Dracula and Frankenstein, Carmilla, they're more about people than they are about monsters to me. I'm fairly certain there's roots in Oscar Wilde's famous trials in Dracula, about the fear of male intimacy, since Bram Stoker has been more recently well known for being potentially queer, and Dracula was also inspired partially by Carmilla, itself a horrific lesbian romance. And even beyond that, the strange, the foreign, the twisted humanity, what we see in ourselves reflected from others. Then Frankenstein has its own whole host of human fears laced in it. Parenthood, homosexuality, theology, science. Human connection, our greatest fear and our greatest salvation.

I could write essays about horror, I really could.

the horrors of each era reflect our society’s fears during that era, but there’s something to be said about the inherent, timeless, and unshakeable fears about humanity and the Other (tm tm tm). those fears, those insecurities about the self? they never go away. i think that’s why we as a society love stories about them so much

cruelty against me specifically

im making my own gd lisa frankenstein merch via embroidery on a sweater. plan is for a lightning bolt on the cuff of the right sleeve and a quote across the front of the sweater. problem is i can’t decide on a quote. i got a few options:

“Death is temporary. I'll love you... Forever."

"If you can't find your perfect boyfriend... Make him."

"I'd rather be electrocuting my boyfriend with my tanning bed."

but i can’t pick which cause im indecisive as hell

the first one is actually a movie quote, and one i love? but its less punchy. the second two are taglines from either promotional material or the little bit of official merch that was available, and they do feel more tagline-y — which is a bit of a double-edged sword,,, (though the electrocution one is really funny)

i toyed with using the “She’s slaying, he’s decaying” tagline from the posters cause it’s shorter and less work to embroider but i’m just not feeling it

Perhaps the 'your' goes unspoken? (I, too, am teasing you!)

The "Wild West" is such a bizarre concept, as someone deeply into history, the actual "Wild West" was such a short lived thing, but to be fair, still took up a decent chunk of our country's history (considering it is only about 250 years old so about 1/5 of the time spent as a legitimate country). I have (distant, estranged) family out in the South West, which to me is the only place the Wild West still sort of lives on. The Gold Rush itself is such a strange cultural clash in and of itself. Both eras really feel like a gross misrepresentation of what they were actually like, but also such a huge part of American Heritage. (You can blame old Westerns for that!) Having one of the little towns in the East is definitely weird, especially since its literally the New England Area. This place is a frigid wasteland, so seeing the cold sand and empty fake western town makes it feel REALLY haunted. On days where it functions normally it's still a fun little attraction (weirdly themed mini golf included) but if I could visit it when its closed, I would, just to explore it a little more in depth. (It doesn't help someone actually got shot for real there, but thats another story.)

I agree about your tastes, I enjoy things that delve into the human psyche, the human nature, especially darker aspects, but even more so the light within the darker aspects. One of my favorite things are the Ethical Vampire or the Ethical Werewolf conundrums. The idea that your darkness, a darkness normally hidden within humans, is forced to the forefront and in a nearly uncontrollable manner. And having someone love you regardless, these raw things that traditionally humans and society have told you are inherently evil and wrong or sick are, not necessarily okay, but are not unlovable. There is such a beauty in that. And even if it doesn't surround a love story, the individuals will to stay strong and protect their morals and their humanity...? Its beautiful.

I also love the Friendly Ghost dynamic as well, it pairs well with death and the maiden, but it has more to it to me than that. Its that continuation of love and caring after death. Where passing on was maybe wholly possible but the ghost's love of humanity keeps them around. Or even just a ghost, a powerless thing, desperately trying to help those who cannot be helped. The idea of a bystander who wants nothing more than to tell you it is okay but cannot speak a word? I love that.

i can totally blame old westerns for the romanticization of that whole era. every other street or building in my town is named for some western movie star and there’s museums for them everywhere? it’s a little overwhelming if you’re not used to it. every older person in town sort of Worships these movie stars and the culture of ‘The Wild West.’ like,,, we live in suburbia. there is nothing wild here. your house has a white picket fence and you get freaked out at a Chicken. and all this is ignoring the whitewashing of ‘the wild west’ but that’s a whole different thing that i’m sure you’re aware of—

i like new england, though. maybe my perspective is skewed ‘cause i’ve only visited and never lived there long term, but i like the older styles of architecture that’s a lot of places, and i like the (relative) abundance of public transport? and i’m perpetually Warm so the concept of living somewhere cooler long term is appealing, i guess? the desert of the west coast and the humidity of the southeast are both Sweltering

anyway,

i think the little weird finds are always the most fun? even if they’re creepy in the off season. we have christmas and winter themed parks here and they’re really weird to see in 125 degree heat in the middle of summer too? though… i don’t know if anyone got shot at any of those places—

as for the ‘tropes’ you brought up:

yes yes yes yes yes!!!!

ethical darkness, ethical inhumanity, all of it is such a fantastic way to explore what really is humanity! it’s not exactly an example of the trope, but i read this book last year that was about cannibalism? which is a great start to this tangent— anyway, it was About Cannibalism, but really it was more about how connection to others is inherently going to cause damage to the other, but to go without connection will cause destruction of the self? humans can’t exist with others without rubbing up against each other in all the wrong ways at times, and so often we give up parts to fit with the people we want to keep with us? the connection sustains us and we take those parts of other people and use them to help us grow? if you’ve ever adopted some silly turn of phrase a friend says frequently, isn’t that just a form of consumption of them?

but, to deprive yourself of that connection because you don’t want to hurt anyone, because you can’t stand the darkness and the mistakes and the inevitable hurt that comes from being a human and taking parts of others, you just turn that urge inwards and end up cannibalizing yourself?

again, not exactly the perfect fit for that trope, but one i found fascinating and kept revisiting.

the book was called “bones and all” and i highly recommend it if you can stomach some really visceral descriptions of cannibalism and stuff. i think they made the book into a movie somewhat recently, but it has an actor i don’t really love in it so i haven’t seen it

It's funny, on the East Coast we also have one of those old west towns. I find it kind of silly, considering its winter most of the time and can only open for a single season. We aren't exactly in the appropriate region for such a thing. But, it seems the business has been going since the 70s so it must have SOME attraction, right? I used to go to it as a kid, and I did find it fun, but nowadays it is a little more like a real life ghost town until they get the money from schools and camps coming through. I've gone once when I was older and been the only person there. Makes the whole thing a lot more... eerie than fun.

I've always got big ideas for the events I attend though, to use things like pepper's ghost effects and home brewed theatre tech to make the world more immersive and spooky. I have a lot of fun rigging up devices and tricks to seem more real than not. It's funny, since my character is a reluctant cannibal, I keep edible blood capsules on me, and have a stash of deli meat I use for "eating people". At one point someone was letting my character eat them, and I used slight of hand to hide the capsules and meat. When I "bit" them and tore away "bloody" flesh, it scared the hell out of some of the players around me who weren't expecting it. I was really proud of my special effects that day!

One of the things I think about a lot when it comes to stories is a trope called "Death and the Maiden". It often runs alongside the Beauty and the Beast trope too, so you might be familiar. The idea that one represents Life and the other represents Death, sometimes more literally than others. The delicate balance, the way Life so easily succumbs to Death, but how Death is nothing without Life. It can even just represent both grief and healing. Its a lovely trope, similar to Beauty and the Beast. The human loving the inhuman, and finding humanity within it.

We have similar tastes.

we have some claim to fame here with the Wild West, gold rush and all, but it’s also kind of Everywhere? i would imagine the novelty of “the west” is more popular on the east coast. but what do i really know, i’ve technically never lived on the “east coast”. the american south east? yeah. but The East Coast, not so much. it sounds eerie all abandoned like that though, like an urban explorer sort of dealio. i’m not sure id prefer it over the crazy lines theme parks have over here

also: HOLY CRAP that sounds so cool! apparently pork tastes and looks the closest to human meat (don’t ask me how i know that, i forgot why)? so deli meat and a blood packet is so smart

there’s something to be said about, seeing oneself through the ‘horrific other,’ i suppose? that learning to love the inhuman just shows more of ones’s own humanity? i know what you’re talking about when you mention “death and the maiden.” everyone and their mom knows sort of conceptually, cause of hades and persephone — however historically Shaky their story ideas tend to be. it’s another good trope that. feels good to see and read and stuff? humanity and change and the way nothing is truly ever one way because of everything needs everything else-

im sort of talking without thinking, so don’t mind me if my words are a little Disjointed or run around without going anywhere

i think… stories that delve into questioning the nature of and extent of humanity are stories that i really enjoy. they’re some of my favorites

The stars are beautiful. While I was away I was picking out all the same constellations. I also don't see them often, so when I go to my events and wind up deep in the woods, I love to look up and see them. Its comforting to think that we see the same stars. You definitely seem to know more of them than I do, but the songs and poetry were right. When they shine so brightly it makes the world seem so small and the universe so unbelievably big. I normally don't see any, and my events I see more and clearer than ever, but sometimes I get so far out of the way of humans that I can see the stars so densely packed and so bright that it was like I was floating through space. Truly mind boggling.

I don't mind the nicknames either by the way. I appreciate them, actually. I like being Creech or Creature or Adam! I'm sorry for not writing sooner, I wanted to wait for you to come back. I turned on notifications, so when you post I come back online to see the answers. If you ever need me, just post something and I will be here.

Last time we wrote you mentioned liking theme parks because of practical effects and I completely agree. The abilities of people to basically make dreams come true is fascinating. It is why one of my favorite rides is the Haunted Mansion. The ability to make the incorporeal ghosts into something visible and tangible, but still ghostly, is a daunting task but they did a really good job. Maybe this is also why I like theatre. I'm not crazy about theatre like some people, I don't go to massive broadway productions or have a favorite musical, but I've studied theatre and its the backstage I love more than the acting or singing. Again, its the fantasy come to life. Making ghosts real, making clothing transform before your eyes, people catching fire but never getting hurt. The real practical effects, that feel like youre reaching out to touch a dream. I love that.

You had asked about my event, and its actually an ongoing campaign. I go every month, and its almost like theatre. Everyone has their own characters, and every month we get together, about a hundred of us, in a campground pretty far out of the way (so no one hears us screaming). Its a large ongoing story with a lot of interesting moving parts. I think something that is fascinating is that there's parts of the plot I might not even see or know is going on. Theres so many people with their own individual plots and ideas and stories all combining at the event that its such a mixed bag of what you interact with. My character was actually a zombie that came back into sentience. She is still cursed to need to eat flesh, but she does so with regret and anguish about hurting people, especially because she is a doctor. She kind of became a surgeon to give back to the people who take care of her. If she can heal and save more people than she hurts, she figures its a fair deal for her continued existence in a world where she looks like the monsters everyone fears and fights daily. Its such a fascinating character to play. You can see why I grew attached not only to her but our shared source as well. I have a soft spot for those who have defied the laws of nature, and find themselves out of time and place.

that campaign sounds like so much fun??? i play dnd a lot, but it’s so different at a table than actually dressing up and acting things out? i enjoy theater as much as the next person who was in choir as a kid, but that sort of,,, acting is something i really admire? being able to step outside yourself or see yourself through someone or something else? it’s really cool. it sounds like so so much fun :D

the haunted mansion is one of my favorite attractions too! the one by me (west coast, so disneyland) is currently under renovation for the whole year ‘cause they’re completely gutting the queue, which is disappointing, but it’s not as if i really have the money to go to disneyland so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. pepper’s ghost effect is just so versatile and so incredible? it’s just Everywhere and it’s so cool? plus all those early day animatronics, and the everything else? really really incredible

there’s something similar to your event that happens at a local theme park near me? they have this old west ghost town themed area, and every day for all of summer, every summer, they have a bunch of actors filling every building and running around doing all sorts of shenanigans. it’s much less Serious than a zombie apocalypse, moreso a fight between two silly rival criminal gangs, but there’s just so much going on, you could spend all day walking around maybe a few hundred square feet of land and still not be privy to everything? it’s something really cool

i have a fondness for ‘beauty and the beast’ type stories. there’s this sort of,,, fear that people wont love you anymore (however you define love) if they see the ‘weird’ or ‘scary’ parts of you. so you show them the distasteful parts first. and if they love you anyways? becoming more… human through love? there’s something innately reassuring about that sort of love

i dunno. i guess you can start to see why i latched on to our story. (besides the obvious of remembering things). beauty and the beast, pride and prejudice, eros and psyche, lisa frankenstein, etc… i just… that’s a sort of story i find solace in. seeing people find humanity in each other. and growing through their own troubles because they have someone there to support them and to lean on.

sorry it’s been a Week or so, i’ve been traveling out of my home state! i’ve lived in areas with heavy light pollution my whole life, so visiting somewhere with very little light and a place where you can easily get above the cloud layer to see the stars unobstructed? it’s amazing. i’ve literally never seen stars quite like this before! i can understand now why so many songs and poems were written about them.

that first picture shows the big dipper? and it is big. then, in the second, you can pick out all of orion, taurus, the seven sisters, and i think even the beginning of canus major off to the left edge of the photo! the stars are just… really something, creech

side note: i hope it’s okay that i’ve called you ‘creech’? i try to alternate between ‘creature’, ‘creech’, and ‘adam’? i do remember referring to creature as adam once i came back and got fixed up and we started living our (un)lives together? but that was always a lil formal for me, i liked giving nicknames, ‘creech’ being one of ‘em. i still like nicknames, if i’m honest— i digress, if you don’t like being called that or want to be called something specific? i’ll do that

anyway: the stars. you really don’t realize how much Stuff there is in the sky when you live in areas with lots of light pollution. sure, you see movies and documentaries and go to planetariums so you logically know there’s a lot of stuff out there. but when you see maybe 10 stars a night At Most? you don’t really internalize how many there really are in the sky all the time! there are just so many stars out there! it’s incredible! i only see orions belt on a good night, remembering he has a club/sword and a bow too is insane. it got so dark out there i could see a (relatively) bright band in the sky that was the milky way?

i didn’t spend a full week just looking at stars, but it’s the coolest thing i think i’ve done while i was away

Per our last letter: I am so impressed! Physics is fascinating but I do not have the brain for it. I love when my friends who love math and physics tell me about it though, they make it make sense, you know? My last roommate kept a whiteboard in her room and just FILLED it with mathematics and would dissect math problems in conversations with us in order to solve them. It was fun. Pity about the Men In STEM type of Personality though, I'm sure you're a delight to chat with minus the golf. Funny, I get zapped myself.... not irregularly? I like the way it makes my fingertips buzz.

As for essayists and Youtubers I also quite like Jacob Geller and watch Bernadette Banner, Bernadette is an inspiration to me. I'm very familiar with both nightmind and Defunctland, I also share a theme park fascination. I love videos of urban exploration in places like that, as well as the technology behind them. My specific fascination is dark rides, but I also enjoy just watching rollercoaster videos too just cuz they're neat. I started in the theme park side of youtube when I started watching Haunted House runthrough videos, looking at the effects and costumes, then it moved on to the dark rides and went from there.

I also watch Morgan Donner, Nicole Rudolph, Karolina Zebrowska, Sew Rena and Rebecca Maksy who are in the same vein of creator as Bernadette. I also enjoy doll creators in the background like Dollightful and Hextian, etellan and Poppen Atelier. Essayists I like, or content creators in general, Athena P is deeply funny, Strange Aeons and Izzyzz are very popular, Kaz Rowe is my BELOVED for a LGBT perspective on history, Li Speaks and Dream Jelly for nostalgia essays, CZWorld and Dead Meat are great for horror, Caitlin Doughty for some really good insight on death work and death culture though she is by no means the last and only creator i follow on that, and hazelyt with their AMAZING creepypasta retrospective I cannot recommend more. If you like horror, but not necessarily campy horror, check out the yt channel nana825763. They made the famous username666 but made this absolutely insane short film called "my house walkthrough" that is a must see for those who like horror that allows you to dissect it moment to moment but isn't very long. Entirely practical effects, I cannot stress how much this formed a huge portion of my standards for scary stuff that doesn't rely on jumpscares, but pure artistry. They literally destroyed this house over time to get each take for the movie so it is WILD to imagine how they did it (the behind the scenes is also amazing).

P.s.: I'm so glad you liked Frankenhooker! Definitely one of those sleeper hits that you can tell inspired some of LF, along with things like Re-Animator and Weird Science, Death Becomes Her too (which has some WILD old effects). But I also see the Heathers and Edward Scissorhands comparisons. Not sure if you're a Heathers fan?

i do like heathers quite a bit! and i love edward scissorhands! all the movies you mentioned there i’ve seen more than once and i like ‘em a lot! there’s a thing i’ve seen around more than once about how if lisa frankenstein the movie was actually made in the 80’s, we’d be played by johnny depp and winona ryder, which i do kinda agree with-

plus i’m a sucker for good practical effects? i love when you can watch an effect and see viscerally how real it is, because something is actually happening on set? even if it isn’t “perfect,” at least it’s real, ya know?

it’s the same principle as my fascination with theme park engineering? cause a lot of those places have to conceal the actual inner workings of things to maintain illusion, but they’re all real and practical and i think it’s so fun to try and figure out every bit of engineering that went into how the effects work? it’s like a puzzle, i guess

real, physical special effects are just so so cool
