Thoughts of Day 1
Day 1 of the March Thoughts Krakow/Poland - you perplex me!
The ultimate tale of two cities. Of past and present. A previous 1000 years of flourishing Jewish life, of creativity and vitality, the largest Jewish community in the world in the 1920’s and then a complete decimation of our people through the Holocaust.
My own feelings of why would we even want to rebuild any Jewish life in a land the allowed the genocide of a our nation.
A present day Right winged Government that seems to seek to change/erase history and take no responsibility of its actions or involvement. Government and entrepreneurs profiteering from our destruction; municipalities leasing our Shules on long term leases for 1 Zolty p.a. but charging tourists to visit, Holocaust tourism’s generating revenue for the Polish government with seemingly little to pour back in to rebuilding or supporting Jewish life or the life’s of the Holocaust survivors.
A growing reborn Jewish community post the war and communism, a staggering number of young non-Jews in the Polish universities learning the Jewish language and culture that was all but destroyed. The incredible work happening unfunded by the Polish government at the JCC helping those lost Jewish souls come back home. Jonathan and the team you are an inspiration.
On one hand, I say we Jews should NOT be here and then on the other hand isn’t it amazing that despite the genocide we can regrow and rebuild. It is the story of our people, Persecuted over 1000s of years but still surviving and holding on to traditions past down.
The matters are complex and
Krakow/Poland you have me confused.
