#~test test mic check~ (broadcast)
After the blood shed...and the final bell rang...all was silent on Dastor's station. There was screaming...carnage, and soon after-- nothing.
Where his tower once stood was now a pile of rubble, tattered feathers and flames...and he, buried amongst the damage.
He had made it out...barely by the skin of his teeth. His body near broken. He couldn't move a single muscle...
It took some doing...but static rolled through on his station...
With a single repeated message in moarse across the airwaves:
... .-.-.- --- .-.-.- ... ... .-.-.- --- .-.-.- ... ... .-.-.- --- .-.-.- ...

Are there any nicknames or whatever they're called you are okay with being called? Can I call you dude or would that get me 096'd?
The stag stares daggers for a moment before pressing to make his grin a little wider so as to cover the look of wanting to maim
"...The name is Alastor-- dude."
He says this particular word with finger quotes followed by a mess of static between his teeth and a wiping of his hands as though he had just touched something filthy

“It stinks in here.”
That’s the first thing Miyuki says when he steps into the studio the next day.
Jerry, at the computer, laughs quietly.
You grin. “Yeah. Sorry. That would be Dennis.”
“Right. Saw the release today. They’re not shutting you down.”
“Well, it was put much more nicely there. They’re not shutting us down now but they are giving us the rest of the year to perform well. If we don’t —” you make a cutting motion with your hand across your neck “— we’re out.”
“Fixed our pay, though,” Jerry mutters, sending you a sidelong glance.
Righttt. Dennis had unapologetically let it slip you’d been covering part of his check. You think it was revenge for him getting in trouble for not sending a representative down for the company to the press conference but really, it just makes them sound like assholes.
Jerry was a little upset about it but you’d pressed that if push came to shove, you had your sister and Hector to fall back on. He had no one other than his grandma and while DJing at parties brings in a little extra side cash, it wouldn’t have been enough had you not stepped in.
But that’s over now. They’re paying him his old rate again.
Of course, you two might end up turned out onto the street come the new year but you’d cross that bridge when you got to it.
Miyuki doesn’t say anything to that, though his eyes sweep over to you curiously. You just shake your head minutely. You’ll tell him downstairs.
You and Jerry had come in early to set up. He hadn’t changed much but you two needed to do a few tests, run through some things, wake up that old muscle memory of how things used to be.
Things are the same again now, except for the purple bruise on your temple, the professional baseball player standing in your studio, and the hubbub about your return tonight.
“You want anything from downstairs, Mouser?”
Jerry shakes his head. “Had Jersey Mike’s earlier. I’m still good. When’re you gonna be back?”
“Won’t be long. We’re doing BestBuy tomorrow. Probably just an hour or something. That okay?”
“Yeah, that’s fine. Where is the Lysol, though? He is right. Freakin’ stinks of weed in here.”
You snicker. “It’s in the closet.”
“Right, thanks. Have fun.”
You go over to Miyuki, who is taking in the room. Overall a small recording studio, you have the control room, where Jerry operates the sound board, then the live room — the actual studio — wherein you broadcast from. Both areas are separate from each other.  A glass window mounted above the sound board looks into it, showing the desk with the various computer screens, your mic and headphones, and a chair. On the walls inside the control room you have a few puzzles you and Jerry have done together framed, along with newspaper clippings of Night Owl’s sparse mentions in the media.
More have appeared, though, from far more well-known newspapers, like the Washington Post, the New York Times. The new ones read things like:
WHO AND WHAT IS NIGHT OWL, KCSD’S NIGHTTIME RADIO SEGMENT?
SOCAL’S MOST UNDERRATED RADIO SEGMENT, NIGHT OWL, ON 101.1 FM
UNKNOWN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC BUT BELOVED BY UC STUDENTS AND GRAVEYARD SHIFT WORKERS, NIGHT OWL, A RADIO SEGMENT
HOW THE PADRES’ WINNING HOME-RUN OF THE WORLD SERIES THRUSTED A LITTLE-KNOWN SHOW INTO STARDOM
“Little-known show? That’s kinda cruel. And that’s coming from me.”
Jerry snickers.
You grin. “Yeah, well, sympathetic press gets us more listeners, so they can keep going.”
“That is true…”
The two of you slip out of the studio.
He glances at you and smirks. “Nice shirt.”
You grin, tugging at the black shirt with just the Wonder Woman logo on the breast. “Thank you. Wonder Woman is excellent. I have a poster of her and the Wonderfam in my room.”
“Of course you do.”
He pushes the down button for the elevator.
“I’ve been thinking I want to get some more snails if I get a bigger tank, like two of them, and you know what I’m gonna name them?”
“Let me guess — Wonder Woman and Superman?”
“Aw, look at you. All knowledgeable about comics now.”
“Well, you did talk my ear off about it for two hours straight.”
The elevator doors slide open.
You smile. “I did, didn’t I?”
Your studio is on the tenth floor of KCSD’s building, which is located in Hillcrest, a neighborhood west of your apartment in Normal Heights. Right across the I-805.
Outside, the sun is beginning its descent. The time change is in a couple days, so it’ll be setting even earlier after that. You take the time to enjoy the last long days of sunlight. It’s warm today, perfectly comfortable, especially with the sun still out and a light breeze. You’re in your Wonder Woman t-shirt, dark jean shorts, your regular Doc Martens that are scuffed and worn, and a pair of black over-the-knee socks, finished with a black cherry lip lacquer.
“So, what was he talking about? Did they lower your pay?”
“Not mine. His. A few months ago. But,” you sigh, tilting your face to the sky, closing your eyes as you come to the crosswalk. You still need a second to adjust to the brightness. “Jerry lives on his own with his grandmother. It’s just them two. She has diabetes, though, and needs medication for it. We get insurance but it doesn’t cover the entirety of the prescription. The two of them wouldn’t have been able to live on that paycheck, so I told payroll to fill it from mine.”
Miyuki is quiet for a second. You open your eyes, a little more adjusted to the light.
“Nice of you,” he says at last.
“It’s just me and Batman and Robin. It made the most sense.”
“Hm.”
The light turns. You two cross the street to the 7-Eleven, where Rico’s Tacos, a food truck, sits adjacent of.
You and Jerry are loyal customers to them, so when you step up the window, you are instantly recognized.
“Tee! What’s up? We heard about what happened! Free tacos for life, yeah? Or, well, maybe just a few months.”
You grin up at Jaime Moreno as he leans out the window, handsome face split into a grin.
“Cheap ass,” his sister, Juana ‘Janie’ Moreno, hisses, shoulder checking him out of the window to grin down at you. “Mi cielito, you can have as many free tacos as you want!”
“She’s not gonna go on a date with you,” Jaime mutters.
“Yeah, well, she’s not gonna go on a date with you either, stupid ass.”
You laugh. Miyuki snorts quietly.
Janie’s eyes dart to him, eyebrow raising. “Who’s this?”
Jaime looks at him, too, blinking.
You can’t help but laugh. “This is Miyuki. He’s the guy who concussed me.”
“Ohhh,” they say in unison.
“Sorry, man,” Jaime says, eyes twinkling. “We don’t watch much baseball.”
“Oh, don’t feel bad,” you say. “I didn’t know who he was until I woke up in the hospital.”
“Okay,” Miyuki says. “Why don’t we order?”
“Right.”
You place your orders, he pays, and in no time, you’re sitting on the curb next to each other, soda bottles between you, feasting on your still-hot tacos.
“Okay,” he says around a mouthful of a spicy chicken taco. “This is good.”
“Right? And look, no allergic reactions!” You grin, gesturing to yourself.
He snickers.
You two sit in a relatively peaceful silence. Cars drive up and down the street, some pulling into 7-Eleven for gas and snacks, while others line up at Rico’s for dinner. A few pigeons land near you, cooing, no doubt eyeing your food.
Gold rays paint over you, picking out the red highlights in Miyuki’s dark hair, light brown skin glowing.
Your stomach swoops like you missed a step and you look away.
On the sidewalk, a teenage girl walks a small dog. A little girl skips ahead of them, running through the pigeons, letting out a delighted laugh as they flutter away.
You smile, watching her go.
Across the street, a woman hurries down the sidewalk, arms laden with grocery bags. One of them breaks, groceries spilling out. You pause, already starting to set your plate down to run across the street and help her, but someone else swoops in, kindly helping to pick up the vegetables and fruits that tumbled onto the concrete.
You sigh wistfully. “I love humanity.”
“Not exactly representative of humanity collectively, is it? Logically speaking.”
“These are just outliers, you think?”
He nods like it should be obvious. “There are lots of words to describe humanity but I’m not sure good is one of them.”
“No?” you ask lightly.
He shrugs. “Look at what we do. Pollute the earth, start wars over nothing, create mass weapons of destruction. Doesn’t sound very good to me.”
“You think humanity is inherently selfish and bad?”
“I don’t know. I don’t see anything that says it’s inherently good.”
You smile. “How miserable you must be to resent your own kind.”
“I don’t resent humanity. I just don’t think we’re good. That’s all.”
“So, what do you believe in?”
“Myself.”
“Miserable and lonely, then. Sounds like an excuse.”
“An excuse?”
“You’re letting them win,” you say patiently. “Being a cynic, thinking humanity is a plague on this earth, that’s the easy way out. It excuses you, doesn’t it? Despair and cynicism are easy. It absolves you of responsibility. Removes yourself from the equation, from the possibility of helping because, why help if there is no hope?”
You pause and take a breath. You aren’t hungry anymore. Something bubbles inside your chest but you force yourself to be calm. To be patient.
“Miyuki… You aren’t smart or philosophical for saying humanity is doomed. Not at all. You have to believe humanity is good.”
“Why?”
“Humanity named kindness so it must know kindness. We just saw a stranger help another stranger. They didn’t have to. But they did. If you look for greed, selfishness, or corruption, you will find it. Try looking for kindness for once, for the goodness of humanity.”
“You —”
“Are naive? The way that I am, it is strategic. Necessary. Because what else do we have? It’s too easy to go that route. And it’s what they want. The government wants us hopeless, wants us to think there is no way to solve the problems we have created. Wants us to think we are inherently greedy, selfish, and evil because it absolves them of responsibility. And when we believe it, it absolves us of responsibility, too. But it’s a double-whammy, because not only that, but we’re also getting fucked over by the government all the while. No one wins. Nothing gets better.”
You set your food ahead, gazing intently at him. In the setting rays of the sun, his eyes are honey brown.
“Even if you can’t bring yourself to believe that, at least appreciate that you are here, existing with everyone else. How extraordinary it is that we even exist. You know how young the universe is? It’s just barely coming into adolescence. For this brief moment in time, life can exist. But for most of the universe’s life, it will be cold, dark, and empty. Stars will die out. Even the black holes will die in some quadrillion years.”
“Just sounds like an existential crisis if you ask me.”
“We’re here, Miyuki. Existing in that haven in time. We should enjoy our time here.”
“I enjoy my life.”
You take a leap.
“I’m saying other than baseball.”
He falters. You can tell you’ve got him out, because his next words are sharp again.
“Awfully presumptuous, aren’t you?”
You knew that. And yet, something inside you urged you to say it anyway. To presume.
“I’m happy to be proved wrong.”
He’s quiet for a long moment. The sky is painted shades of pink and orange as the sun sets.
“What do you want me to say?”
“What do you do for fun?”
“Baseball.”
“Other than baseball. I like photography, doing puzzles in my free time, watching Say Yes to the Dress, reading poetry, and making playlists. Not just for the show but for me, too. I like watching Batman and Robin move around in their tank. I like — love — the ocean and the beach. I like swimming, too, but the ocean is usually too cold for that, and the pool at my apartment complex isn’t taken care of enough and while I love swimming — love that feeling after several hours of it, when you’re in bed and you feel like you’re rocking on a boat — my fear of getting a UTI is stronger.”
His lips twitch.
You nudge his shoulder with yours. “There has to be something. Like my puzzles. I do them in my free time but also if the show is particularly slow. Jerry likes to do sudoku and he likes Star Wars, but not the recent movies that come out. He says those all suck. Rogue One is apparently the only good movie to come out. I’ve seen it. It’s actually very… touching.”
He sets his plate down with a sigh and picks up the soda bottle, which is sweating in the warm weather. Air hisses out as he untwists the cap. He takes a drink. You try not to stare at the long line of his neck, Adam’s apple bobbing. Focus. You need to focus and stop ogling him.
Easier said than done.
“What are you going to do during the offseason?” you ask, trying for a difference approach.
“The usual. Workout. Review game footage. Plan for next season. The only thing different now is I’m still house hunting and no, real estate doesn’t much interest me outside of that.”
You purse your lips, thinking.
He sets the bottle down and looks at you.
“You should show me.”
“Show you what?”
“How to…” he gestures aimlessly. “Enjoy life. Outside of baseball, I mean.”
You give him a sad smile. “It’s not exactly something that can be taught, Miyuki.”
“Maybe not. But it’s worth a shot. Prove it to me and I’ll believe you.”
“I’m not going to do it because of that. I don’t care about being right or wrong. You can think what you’d like. But… if you really want to, maybe I can help you get into the swing of it.”
“Do your worst.”
“No,” you say, smiling. “I’m going to do my best.”
The look in his eyes is hard to quantify but the set of his mouth is soft.
“I look forward to it.”

Tumblr media
Things continue like that for the most part.
Night Owl runs from eight to three, so you often sleep in until noon. Not the most sustainable sleeping schedule and the first few days are rough, since you’ve been on a ‘normal’ one without having the show, but once you get into the swing of it, it gets better.
Your days are often free, too, so if Miyuki doesn’t have a photoshoot or an interview or any other kind of public engagement, you’re dragging him around the city.
It’s mostly to just get him outside.
He doesn’t need to pick up, like, knitting or something but… he should go out and do things anyway. They don’t have to be extraordinary, either. Even going out and sitting in a cafe and reading is good.
He’s a bit of a solitary creature, you find. He doesn’t have friends here — “I have the team,” he says, but when you ask whether they hang out, he admits it’s never quite voluntary on his part. More of an obligation. Outside of that, there is nothing else. But the thing is, humans need social contact. Social support. It is quite literally hardwired into your DNA.
And being solitary or a homebody doesn’t have to change. You get wanting to stay home. But it’s just… there’s a balance to these things, right?
Mostly… you just want him to enjoy himself.
Bit by bit, it’s starting to work.
You find yourself at Barnes & Noble with your sister at one point and find a book on Shohei Ohtani that seems interesting. You ask him about it and he says he hasn’t read it.
You buy two copies and drag him to Balboa Park to read on the grass on a particularly warm November day.
He humors you, and most of all, you certainly entertain him by asking, “What the hell an ERA and an OPS are,” and all kinds of questions about the baseball jargon you stumble upon in your reading.
Oftentimes, you bring your new camera, a very expensive model you’d picked out at BestBuy a couple weeks ago after several hours of contemplation.
Photography is just a hobby for you, nothing serious, which is why you still haven’t accepted the Padres’ offer to join their team.
The show is going well. More than well. Most nights, you have a long line of callers and even more interaction on Twitter. Once people discover you, they tend to stick around, liking what they find. It helps you have people from all around the world listening. Your listeners in Japan and other parts of the world get the advantage of it being afternoon when your show airs, so it’s feasible to reach a wide audience there. Especially after all the attention you got.
The blessings of modern technology also allow for each segment to be recorded and stored away on streaming apps, so if people aren’t staying up, they can listen the next day, after the fact. That is a popular option.
The time continues to pass. Miyuki’s birthday comes up — turning a whole twenty-nine. You’re a few years younger than him at twenty-six.
November ends and December begins. The city is festive, houses decorated in their various religious symbols for the upcoming holidays. But of course, the lowest the temperatures will go is the fifties and that’s at night. In the day, it floats around the mid-sixties. Cool but not uncomfortable. For some, it ruins the experience of the winter holidays, but you quite like being able to still wear shorts or leggings during the month, so you don’t complain.
All the while, you and Miyuki hang out. You visit museums, art galleries, exhibits, botanical gardens. Sometimes you go to your apartment and complete your more difficult puzzles since he likes the challenge or you try to teach him photography. Sometimes you go to his apartment and he answers your questions on baseball or you cook together or you play shogi together (more like he teaches you how to play). He’d tried it out after your talk, said he was always forced to play it with one of his old teammates from high school but he hadn’t touched it since he graduated. Mostly, you think he enjoys beating you at it but you don’t mind.
That’s the point, isn’t it?
You’re still searching for new things to explore, though.
“Has there ever been anything you wanted to do as a kid that you never did? I always wanted to go to Magic Mountain but my sister is a scaredy cat.”
“Why didn’t your parents just go with you?”
“Didn’t see any use in even going to Six Flags if she wasn’t going to go and they certainly weren’t going to come with me on rides.”
He glances at you, curious.
The two of you find yourselves sitting in the stands of a Little League game. You’d stepped out of a cafe for a late lunch when he spotted the fields and dragged you over to it, which was a nice surprise. Most often, if your days are not pre-planned, you just go where your whims take you. But now it’s his whims leading you to this field. Probably expecting a high school team or something. No, this is Little League. And you mean Little League.
Most of the kiddos running around look to be four to six years old. Their batting helmets are too big for their heads. Volunteers stand around, watching like hawks.
You watch with a small smile as a little boy hits the ball off the tee, then, instead of running down first base line, runs forward to chase it.
A volunteer swoops in as the other boys of the team close in to grab the ball in clumsy formation; the volunteer lifts the little boy back over to the first base line and urges him on. He finally runs for first base.
Miyuki looks amused, too. You wouldn’t have thought he’d enjoyed watching but these little kids are fun to watch. No one gets upset when they chase the ball after hitting it instead of running to the bases. Or if they make more clumsy mistakes. They’re just kids, after all. Babies, really. But they’re having fun and so, everyone else is, too.
Even Miyuki, who watches with a soft look in his eyes.
Or he was. Now he is looking at you, curiosity clear in those amber brown eyes.
“What?”
“I know I’m being a hypocrite by saying this but you don’t talk much about your parents. Did they visit you when you were in the hospital?”
“You can ask questions about my life, Miyuki. We’re friends. Friends do that.”
“Right.”
“And no, they didn’t.” You shrug. “But that’s fine. My sister and I don’t talk to them. They had very specific visions about what we should do with our lives. Go to an Ivy League, become a doctor, an engineer, a programmer. Neither of us wanted that. My sister wanted to be a flight attendant and I wanted to be a radio host. Not very impressive or glamorous jobs in their eyes and certainly not jobs that would earn us six figures so we could give them money. So. We don’t talk. Well, really, they disowned us. But you know.”
“That…”
You shoot him a grin. “It’s okay. They weren’t that great growing up. They took care of us but it was always just a transactional thing and if we didn’t do something they liked, they always said something like After all we have done for you blah blah blah. As if housing us and clothing us and feeding us makes them good parents.”
You yawn, stretching your arms above your head. “Anyway, we’ve got Hector’s family now. They’re loads better.”
“Endlessly optimistic.”
“I can’t change anything,” you chuckle. “That’s in the past. I’ve grieved it, believe me. But in the end, there’s just nothing left for me. So.”
He nods and turns his eyes back to the field.
Another little boy hits the ball from the tee. He doesn’t try chasing it but he heads straight for second base instead of first.
“My mom died when I was a kid.”
You jolt, head whipping towards him. He doesn’t look at you, instead out at the field, where chaos unfolds, punctuated by parents’ cheers and urges and the kids’ yells and laughter. It balances the weight of his words but you still feel them pierce deep in the soft tissue of your heart.
“After she died, my dad wasn’t all there. For most of my childhood and teenage years, he was never there. Had to cook, clean, balance the checkbook, pay the bills. He came around in my final year of high school but it still wasn’t…”
“Can’t make up for all that you had to do,” you murmur.
“But it’s like you said. I can’t change any of it. He tries now, which I guess is what matters the most in the end.”
“Still,” you say softly. “I’m sorry you had to deal with that from such a young age.”
“I had baseball,” he says, looking at you. “If I didn’t have my parents, I had baseball. But I guess that’s the point of this.”
You tilt your head, silently urging him to go on.
He lifts a shoulder. “I won’t have baseball forever.”
“I don’t know,” you say, smiling. “If there is anyone who can keep going forever, I think it’s you.”
“Yeah. Then they’d ban me from the parks.”
You laugh and turn back around, shifting on the metal bench. Your shoulder brushes his.
“I don’t remember much from my childhood other than wanting to play baseball and be the best,” he says, finally addressing your previous question.
“Didn’t even want to go to an amusement park or something?”
He gives you a suspicious looks. “What’s with you and amusement parks?”
“They’re fun!”
“Didn’t realize you were such an adrenaline junkie, tomcat. Maybe you did get hit with that ball on purpose.”
You laugh. “I am not and I did not! They’re just fun! This is coming from someone who has clearly never experienced the pleasure of a rollarcoaster.”
“There are many words to describe rollarcoasters and a pleasure is not one of them. Besides, you’re still recovering from your concussion. I don’t think it’s a great idea to go on a contraption that shoots you from zero to seventy in a few seconds.”
“I’ll ask Hector when I see him tomorrow for my appointment.”
He chuckles. ”You do that. But you know what I have been thinking?”
“Tell me.”
“We’ve been to the zoo, we’ve been all around the city but… why haven’t we gone to the aquarium yet?”
“Oh, my god, you’re right.”
“Doing anything tomorrow?”
“I have my appointment. We’ll go to the aquarium next week Tuesday. Be less busy.”
“Hey, maybe I’m doing something.”
“Are you?” you ask knowingly.
He looks away. “No… but it’s the principle!”
“You’re right. Are you free next week Tuesday to go to the aquarium?”
“Hmm. Yes.”
You nudge his shoulder, smiling. He nudges back, then stays there, your shoulders and arms pressed together, skin against skin. Your heart does something funny at the feeling.
You stay like that until the game is over.
Tumblr media
Your six-week follow up appointment is tomorrow in the afternoon.
Another round of CT and X-ray scans reveal good — great — news. Your brain contusions are completely healed, which finally makes Hector relax. Your skull fracture is entirely healed, too. It wasn’t a very big fracture — if it was, you’d be in a whole lot more trouble, like, brain surgery kind of trouble — so it’s smallness in size lends a hand to your healing. The bruise on your temple is gone, too.
You do have one question, though.
“Soooo, when do you think I’m safe to ride a rollarcoaster?”
“Six months from now,” Hector says flatly.
“What?!”
“One-hundred-and-nineteen. That was the exit velocity on that ball. Concussions don’t just heal like that. They take a long time.”
You pout. You’d figured that. You didn’t think you had to wait six months, though…
“How about two months?”
“Why do you even want to get on one?”
“For fun.”
Hector looks at you for a second, lips pursed. Then he sighs. “Three months. Wait at least three months from the day it happened, so October twenty-fifth to January twenty-fifth. Then after that, you can go. But you must exercise caution. Listen to your body. If you start to feel sick or if your head hurts, stop immediately. Okay? These things are different in everybody but you still have to be careful.”
“I will be. Promise.”

[Night Owl Transcript — 20:34 — 12/9/2022]
Tee: It’s Friday night, folks, which means it’s I-play-music-and-you-imagine-your-lives-as-movies night. Have fun and be safe out there.
[M83’s “Midnight City” plays] Lookin’ at the milky skyline The city is my church It wraps me in its blinding twilight
[Off-air recording starts] Mouser: You and Miyuki sure are spending a lot of time together, huh.  Tee: Yeees? Why? Mouser: Just an observation. Tee: Is it really? Mouser: [Laughs] It is! You guys seem like you’re having a lot of fun together. Just surprised, I guess.  Tee: Why? Mouser: He just doesn’t seem like the kind of guy you’d be friends with.  Tee: I guess not. But he’s not all bad. I just think he’s… Mouser: Got a couple chips on those broad, broad shoulders? Tee, Mouser: [Laughter] Tee: Pretty much. Mouser: I guess I’m not surprised. Guy has bad luck when it comes to concussing people. Tee: [Chuckling] What? Mouser: No way. You don’t know? Tee: Know what? Mouser: Ohhhhh. Oh, shit. Wait. It was this thing… hold on. I’m going in.
Jerry opens the door to the studio, rolling in the chair from the control room. You sit up, sliding off the headphones, pulling your legs from the desk, frowning a little. Midnight City plays quietly from the headphones that you set on the desk.
“I thought you knew,” Jerry says, looking a tad nervous as he rolls up next to you, tapping quickly on his phone.
“I’d never heard anything about it.”
“Well, basically, like, three or four years ago, during his second season here in the US and with the Atlanta Braves, a few weeks into the season, one of his foul balls hit a little girl in the stands.”
“What?”
He passes you his phone. It’s a recent article, talking about not just your concussion, but the other one, too. About a six-year-old girl who, in a home game in Atlanta between the Braves and the Washington Nationals, was hit by a foul ball in the first inning.
“She suffered permanent brain damage,” he says, frowning a little bit. “Like she started having seizures after and stuff. Speech issues, mobility issues. I looked more into it after I first heard about it, just ‘cause I was curious about him, since he was visiting you and stuff. He did the same for her. Paid her hospital bills. Is still paying for stuff regarding her healthcare and making sure she has a good quality of life, I think. They say she’s doing good now.”
“That’s good at least,” you mumble, still scrolling the article.
“But… after it happened, he slumped bad. Like really bad. Like the worst slump of his career apparently. This guy’s, like, a heavy hitter, right? Up there with Judge and Trout, I’ve heard. Defensively speaking, he was still okay. Not as good as usual but… on the offense, he was even worse. This was after his debut here in the US. One of the Braves’ best seasons to date. But that season…”
Jerry shakes his head.
“I mean, I get it. I probably wouldn’t walk away unscathed but… I don’t know.”
“It’s different in Japan,” you say quietly, handing his phone back. “They’re vigilant about keeping people safe. Here… nothing happens until it’s too late. Has it happened since?”
“No. Your incident was his second one.”
“They’re not the same, though. Behind the foul line… yeah, it should be netted. But out there in the outfield — that was on me.”
“He probably still feels bad, Tee. I mean… yours was bad. You got lucky. Really lucky.”
True. Headaches have increased in frequency and sometimes you’re still sensitive to the sun. But outside of that… you’ll be okay eventually.
You knew there might be some underlying guilt, but never enough for you to reconsider where you stand.
Is he humoring you because of that? Or because you are friends?
You hope it’s because you’re friends. If it’s that first one… you don’t know. What can you do?
You try to think of it from his perspective. If your places were reversed, you’d probably feel a little bit of guilt. But he’s more than made up for it — when he didn’t even have to. He had your forgiveness before you even woke up the day after. He always had it.
“He got better, though, right?”
“Well, he accepted a trade deal with the Padres after that season. Three years here. It ended this season.”
“What?”
“How do you not know that? You guys hang out constantly!”
“The finer points of the Major League Baseball trade do not dominate our conversations!”
He throws his head back and laughs. You grin, too, shaking your head as you glance back to the computer to make sure the next song is correct. It’ll start straightaway.
“Well, don’t worry about it. Your boyfriend —“
“He isn’t my boyfriend! Mouser!”
Jerry ignores you, smiling knowingly. “Your boyfriend accepted a five-year extension. $120 million.”
“You know, on that thought…”
Janelle Monáe’s Make Me Feel starts playing.
You two share a mischievous grin.
You keep on askin’ me the same questions And second-guessin’ all my intentions Should know by the way I use my compression That you’ve got the answers to my confessions
It’s like I’m powerful with a little bit of tender An emotional sexual bender Mess me up, yeah, but no one does it better There’s nothin’ better
That’s just the way you make me feel That’s just the way you make me feel So good, so good, so real
Tumblr media
Look, it’s all in good fun, alright?
He isn’t your boyfriend. No way. Your relationship is better now, after those boundaries were tested and are steadily improving as he opens up to you about his life but…
It’s just not possible.
Even if he will be here for the next five years… and maybe more…
No. No. Not happening. It can’t.
It’s not like you’re swearing off the possibility completely but that just seems… out of this world.
Out of the realms of your world.
Yes, he’s horribly handsome and actually kind of funny in that snarky way of his, while also having rare bouts of sensitivity and sometimes your breath catches when you see his face in the sun and your heart does a funny little thing when he looks at you but it’s…
It’s nothing.
Tumblr media
It was evening, and no longer summer. Three small fish, I don’t know what they were, huddled in the highest ripples as it came swimming in again, effortless, the whole body one gesture, one black sleeve that could fit easily around the bodies of three small fish.
Also I wanted to be able to love. And we all know how that one goes, don’t we?

Live Streaming Made Easy: A Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up and Hosting a Stream
Introduction
Let's face it; we live in a world where anything can happen at any time. Technology is constantly changing, which makes it hard for businesses and individuals to keep up with everything they need to do to stay on top of their game. But when you have the proper tools and experience in your corner, it doesn't matter what platform you use or the industry you serve. This is especially true when hosting a live-stream video.
Video streaming is a multimedia platform that offers your audience an immersive experience.
Video streaming or web streaming is a multimedia platform that offers your audience an immersive experience. Live video lets you connect with your audience in real time and share your message with the world. It's also a great way to make money – especially if you're a YouTuber who uses their channel to make money from ads or sponsorships.
Tumblr media
And then there's fun: playing games on stream and interacting with fans is one of the best ways for streamers to keep their community engaged and entertained. And finally, there's socializing: connecting with other creators and content makers through live video has always been challenging!
Streaming is a great way to share what you're doing, what you've learned or just a fun experience.
Streaming is a great way to share what you're doing, what you've learned or just a fun experience. As long as people can see your stream and want to watch it, then streaming can be an effective way to get your message out there.
You could share anything from personal opinions about current events and politics to how-tos on DIY projects or cooking recipes with people worldwide. You could also stream live events such as sporting games, school plays or concerts (whether they're at home or out of town).
Streaming allows you to connect with others interested in similar topics that interest them too!
Set up your broadcast-ready camera or web camera.
You will want to ensure your camera is in a good position. If you are using a tripod, it should be level and stable.
Make sure that your camera is working properly before you start streaming. You can test it with another person or object to check the settings and get it ready for action.
Be sure that the on/off switch is turned on during live streaming, especially if your webcams are connected via WIFI (in which case they could easily turn off).
Make sure the camera is facing in the right direction so people can see what's happening when they listen to your show through their phones or computers."
Make sure you have sufficient background lighting to stream a quality video.
Make sure you have sufficient background lighting to stream a quality video. Whether you're using your computer or a laptop, it's important to ensure enough light for the camera to pick up for the image onscreen to be visible. If the background is too bright, viewers will be blinded by it and unable to see what is happening in front of them. If it's too dark, people may not even realize there's a stream going on!
Use a light source that could be more brightly/dark.
Choose good audio equipment and ensure it's working properly before starting your web live stream.
To ensure good quality audio, you should use a microphone with a pop filter or headphones. The pop filter will reduce the unwanted sound from popping your mouth when speaking. This is especially important for video chats as it can make you look unprofessional and unserious if you don't have one. If you need help determining what equipment to get, remember that the more expensive pieces of gear usually perform better than their cheaper counterparts (but always check reviews first). For example, buying a costly boom mic stand is better than two cheap ones because they'll be equally unstable if they need to be made better to hold up on their own.
Another important thing when live recording streams are ensuring your ears isn't covered by headphones while listening to yourself speak during playback! This may seem obvious, but I've seen many people forget about this step before starting their broadcast and end up missing part of what they said because headphones covered their ears at high volumes (which can damage hearing over time).
Be prepared to send an email or post to notify your fans and followers that you're about to go live.
Email or social media to notify your followers that you're about to go live.
To make it easy for people to find your live stream, consider sending out a broadcast email to all of your subscribers or sending out a tweet with a link (or both). If you have time, use one of the many social media management tools like Hootsuite or Buffer to schedule posts in advance. You can also use these tools as an auto-responder if someone asks questions during the broadcast—they'll receive an automated response letting them know that their question will be answered later on.
Use background music for intro and exit music.
You can add background music to your stream to give it a more professional feel. Background music can be played at the beginning and end of each stream, as well as during breaks in between games.
The type of music you use should be appropriate for your audience. For instance, if your game has a serious tone or storyline, use orchestral or ambient music instead of something upbeat and fun. The same goes with live-streaming platforms; some platforms have certain licensing requirements that prevent them from playing certain types of music (i.e., Creative Commons licensed works are not allowed on Twitch).
If possible, try to find free resources licensed under Creative Commons or public domain licenses—this will help keep legal costs down while giving little reason for other copyright holders to complain about unauthorized usage individually (as opposed to mass lawsuits).
When going live, start with a fun introduction so viewers know what they can expect from the stream.
Tumblr media
When you're ready to go live, introduce yourself and explain what the web live streaming will be about. If it needs to be more obvious from the title or description, give viewers a hint of what they can expect. This can include:
Why you're doing the stream in the first place (for example, if it's part of your job or personal brand)
What kind of audience do you want to reach (for example, do you want people from all over or just those nearby?)
The topics that will be covered during your stream (what type of content is being shared)
Once you've introduced yourself, mention how long your session will last—and remind viewers that it'll end at some point! You might also want to ask questions from those watching—this doesn't have to be an interview format; try and engage with them as much as possible, so they feel like they're talking directly with someone instead.
When switching topics, try using transition words like "Now, let's talk about…" or "Before we move on…."
Transition words are ways to keep your audience engaged as you switch topics. They let people know that something will change and prepare them for what comes next. For example, if you're on a live stream about cooking and want to talk about fitness, try saying, "Now, let's talk about fitness!" This lets everyone know that the topic changes without being abrupt or confusing.
Try using transition words like:
"Let's move on…."
"Next up…"
"Before we go..."
Use emoticons in your speech (Just kidding, I was being sarcastic).
Emoticons are a great way to add emotion to your speech, clarify your meaning or add a bit of fun and humour. They can also lighten the mood.
Streaming is easy!
Streaming services are easy! All you need is the following:
Social media or your website
A streaming account (free or paid)
A camera and microphone to stream with.
Conclusion
There are great ways to stream live on your website or social media platform, but it all starts with a camera!

Public warning
Patricia Walker does not do well with lack of control. It’s a tendency passed down from life with Dorothy Walker, easily the most controlling non super-powered person she had ever met. For the first eighteen years of her life, most of Trish’s actions, from her clothes to her work to her every public word and expression, had been chosen for her by Dorothy, and the only real choice she had for herself was whether to give in and make life easier for herself or rebel and suffer Dorothy’s wrath.
Her desire for the control she had lacked had left her with severe insecurity, eating disorders, and self medication through drugs, all issues she struggled with for a good ten years before channeling her need for control into efforts at bettering herself and helping others. She had finally reached a place where life was stable, heading in a direction Trish could be content with, if not fully satisfied.
And then Kilgrave happened. First to Jessica only, without Trish having any idea why her best friend had suddenly vanished without contact for eight months, and then with the shattered mess it left her once Trish did know and struggled to support her. Then to Trish herself, when she, against Jessica’s orders and even pleas, involved herself in trying to draw him out and capture him.
Trish knew she had not suffered anywhere near the level that her sister had from Kilgrave, but it was still enough to make her feel sick and cold when she remembered. She still occasionally had nightmares of his cold, snapping voice, telling her to shoot herself in the head, telling her to kill people she had never met before out on the docks. She still shivered in disgust when she remembered the feeling of his hands on her face, his lips on her skin, the terrible ambivalence of wanting to kiss him, enjoying it, even as every part of her true self screamed out in horror. And she could never forget Simpson’s hands around her throat, choking her nearly to the point of death at Kilgrave’s command.
She had hated and feared the man from the first moment Jessica managed to stutter out what he had done to her. No, she had hated him before then, when she first saw the unnaturally shocked, broken state of her sister when she finally broke free from his initial control. Anyone who could hurt Jessica so deeply and so permanently earned her hatred without needing to know their identity.
And now he was back. Again. As much as Trish feared for herself, for being used or even killed in his obsessive pursuit of Jessica, she feared even more that Kilgrave would damage Jessica even more deeply, that he would continue to pile up dead and damaged bodies around himself and place the blame at her feet. Jessica didn’t need this, not again. And if Trish could do anything to help or stop it, it would help her feel just a little bit more of a sense of the control she knew she didn’t really have.
She made her way to her recording studio after first sending some of Heroes for Hires guards ahead of her to thoroughly check out the studio for any signs of danger from Kilgrave or any of his like, giving them a code phrase to use to insure that they would be able to alert her if he did show up and control them or others.  Trish had already called ahead to insure that all people were thoroughly searched for any possible weapons and passed at least twice through the metal detectors already installed before being allowed entrance. After receiving the all clear, she went, Jessica insisting on accompanying her, via one of Danny’s cars to the studio, passing through the checks put in place and heading straight to her recording studio and instructing the techs to set up for a live broadcast. She was aware of Jessica skulking behind her, hands shoved in her pockets, as Trish rapidly read from the speech she had just finished churning out.
“Good afternoon New York City and beyond, this is Trish Walker with an urgent report coming to you from Trish Talk, by way of myself and all our associates at Heroes for Hire. Soon, a follow up broadcast will be coming your way via Channel 5 News with more information, but please, listen very carefully to this announcement for your safety and those of your loved ones.”
Trish paused, swallowing, and snuck a glance back at Jessica’s impassive expression before facing the mic again and continuing. “Most of you may remember the terrible events of last summer, when the man whom called himself Kilgrave provided mass terror and destruction in our city and in far too many of our own lives and homes. It is to my great sorrow that I inform you that Kilgrave is not, as was believed, deceased. Kilgrave has made personal contact with myself and with-“
Jessica made violent throat slashing motions behind her that Trish saw out the corner of her eye, and Trish edited her intended words smoothly.
“With myself and my colleagues, and we have evidence to support that this is no hoax. Please be aware of yourself and those you love at all times. Know their whereabouts, establish coded phrases and patterns of behavior in order to test out the level of control the people in your life may have at any given moment. Kilgrave is a white male with a British accent, last known to have short medium brown hair and brown eyes. He tends to dress in a professional manner, especially in dark purple suits and ties, and he is considered a threat of the level of nuclear war. Do not approach him should you see him; instead do all you can to get away and call in our hotline at Trish Talk or Heroes for Hire to report a possible sighting. If you suspect that someone you know may be controlled, treat them in the same manner, do all you can to subdue them without causing permanent harm to them if necessary. Kilgrave’s powers last up to 12 hours, so do not under any circumstances try to reason with anyone you suspect to be controlled. If at all possible, wear ear plugs or head phones or listen to loud music when necessary to go out in public. Kilgrave cannot gain control of those whom are not within his direct path and whom cannot hear his commands. He-“
“Stop,” a voice suddenly came over the ear, and both Trish and Jessica jumped, recognizing the voice after a moment as not Kilgrave’s, but female and American. Trish quickly identified the voice a second later as belonging to one of her tech support assistants, Chloe Ash. “The information is over.”
“What the fuck?” Jessica hissed, shooting Chloe a vicious glower and striding towards her quickly. “Will you shut up, even I know to shut the hell up on a live recording, over something this damn important!”
Trish tried to recover, giving a somewhat forced chuckle and speaking over them. “I apologize, there are some technical difficulties, but if you’ll bear with me I will make sure you all get the information you need. As I was saying, Kilgrave cannot-"
“This information is too much, this recording is over,” Chloe repeated, more loudly and forcefully, standing up and taking the headphones off of her ears. She fairly shouted out her next few words, speaking loudly enough that Trish’s words were drowned out.
“Loyal listeners, you will now hear the sound of a suicide by Chloe Ash, Patsy Walker’s employee. More are to follow in the names and as a direct result of the avoidance and rejection of Jessica Jones. Goodbye, loyal listeners, and know that Kilgrave is a patient man.”
She head butted Jessica in the face when Jessica grabbed for her arm, ducking under her and weaving to the other side of Trish. As Trish leaped up, expecting Chloe to grab or try to harm her, the young woman instead ran to a small cabinet against the walls containing little more than sound equipment and various office supplies. Throwing it open, she grabbed a pair of scissors from its contents, opened the blades wide, and closed them around the front of her throat.
She made no sound, showed no pain as she dragged the scissor blades more deeply into her skin, sawing back and forth to make as rough and deep a wound as possible. The live recording now picked up the sound of Trish’s horrified scream, her outcries of “Oh god, no, no!” as blood spattered in a wide arc just short of reaching her, and the noisy scuttle of multiple feet moving towards Chloe as others tried to reach her before it was too late.
Jessica got to her first and wrenched the scissors out of her hand, breaking them in half and throwing them down so Chloe could not get them and use them any further. Tearing off her oversized sweatshirt, she pressed it against the woman’s throat, grimly noting how the blood immediately stained through its thick material and onto her fingers, how it had sprayed hot and thick over her arms and chest before she could touch her at all. The woman didn’t try to speak, likely couldn’t have, but she was losing all color in her face, her eyes already growing glassy and lifeless, and as Trish sputtered and tried not to vomit or pass out in the background, Jessica held onto the almost useless bloodied sweater, as though she could somehow keep the woman alive just by holding on tight enough.
It didn’t matter. Within another minute the woman was clearly dead, limp and unmoving under Jessica’s hands, and she could hear the shrill noise of sirens in the background. Jessica let her drop to the ground, stumbling back and nearly yelling out loud when she bumped into Trish and felt her hands latch onto her arm.
“We have to go, now,” she mumbled, giving her sister’s arm a rough tug.” Before someone else of his comes through in the aftermath.”
Even as she lead Trish out of the room and building, she could still hear the dying woman’s words echo in her mind. More are to follow, as a direct result of the avoidance and rejection of Jessica Jones…

Home Front, Mission 17: Drone On
Take to the Skies
~
[mechanical work sounds in the background]
JANINE DE LUCA: Ah, is it that time already? No, Mr. Yao, I can do it. I have equipment here. No, you do not need to come down and help. Please continue calibrating the comms. Attention, listeners, Janine De Luca here. I've just been informed by Mr. Yao that it is time for today's workout session. Please take a moment to gather two or more tin cans, two bags, and if possible, a chair for exercises you'll be doing later on. Ensure the bags have strong handles. Once you're ready, commence warming up, perhaps by jogging on the spot.
Unfortunately, I'm rather busy attending to a task in Abel's workshop at present. Under the workshop, to be precise. I'm in a crawl space, stripping out old copper wiring for use elsewhere. Still, I have a portable mic, so we can conduct our workout as planned. In fact, being in a confined space has brought to mind exercises for those locked down with limited room, such as Runner Thirty-One, who is unfortunately trapped within a cottage pantry.
So on to today's first exercise: seated leg raises. For this, you'll need one sturdy chair and just enough space to stretch your legs. I believe Thirty-One has that much room in his pantry, along with several thousand legumes. If you don't have room, continue jogging. Otherwise, sit upright in your chair with your back straight and your hands on the chair on either side of you. Plant your left foot on the floor, then straighten your right leg so it extends in front of you with your hip flexed and your knee straight. Hold the leg there for a few seconds, then lower it.
We will raise and lower your right leg thusly for 30 seconds, then your left for 30 more. And start. That's it, keep going. 15 seconds down. You're doing well, everyone. Please ignore my working in the background. Very good. 30 seconds, listeners. Switch to your left leg. That's it, 15 seconds left, listeners. We are both nearly done. The wiring down here is from defunct pre-apocalypse electrics. There is little left to salvage. And exercise complete, as is my collection operation.
I shall trigger a music break while I emerge from the crawl space. You could continue exercising or relax, listeners. I admit I've let Mr. Yao pick out today's songs, so I imagine something cheerful should be about to play.
~
JANINE DE LUCA: Welcome back, everyone. I'm afraid I am far from done with the day's labors, so you will have to bear with me while I conduct essential work. Abel's machine shop has been rather cluttered for the last few months. Just before the superhorde, we recovered a crashed military drone from nearby countryside, an extremely advanced attack model. Mr. Yao claims it resembles a predatory bird, though I know few birds of car size. At first I was worried the drone was damaged beyond repair, but I have had ample incentive to work on it of late. Now while I rewire some circuits on the drone's underside, you've a round of torso twists to do.
Use the tin cans and bags you obtained earlier. Place one tin in each bag. Feel free to use more tins for a greater challenge. This ought to be a fine use for all those cans of condensed milk in your pantry, Runner Thirty-One. Of course, you wouldn't have been trapped by the horde if you hadn't disobeyed orders to go back for those cans. Now sit holding the weights very close to your chest. Twist from the waist to your left hand side, then twist back to the center, and then twist to the opposite side. Keep alternating twists like this for one minute. And begin.
Very good, 15 seconds complete. For camaraderie purposes, you may wish to know I am removing fused components from the drone. They are of a similar heft to your weights. That's it, 30 seconds elapsed. Patience is the key, listeners, in exercise and engineering. No matter how many panels need to be pried loose, one must persist. 15 seconds left, nearly done. And exercise complete.
It has been weeks of work, listeners, but I am close to restoring this drone, I know it. Air support in this day and age... it could bring us a major victory against the superhorde. Dr. Myers is concerned that I've been going without sleep for the project. For more than a few days, in honesty, but completion is so near. I need only... [components zap] Ah, damn! I need only bypass the power systems. The main battery still holds charge, but its connections are ruined. This wiring is delicate. I must concentrate. More music will follow. Rest or continue pushing yourselves and when I return, with any luck, some progress will have been made.
~
JANINE DE LUCA: Hello, listeners. You have just missed Mr. Yao, who has been down here on the pretext of delivering unsolicited cocoa. The truth is, weathering the superhorde, trying to plan a counterattack... the pressure has been intense. Bouts of flu and dysentery have other settlements low on medical supplies, beseeching us for aid. Tinkering in here is the closest thing to relaxation I've been able to manage. Hopefully you have found our exercises similarly restorative.
Today's next task: incline press-ups. If you're confined near stairs, find them. Adopt a press-up position with your hands shoulder-width apart on the second or third step of your stairs and your back straight. Bend your arms to lower your body until your chest is close to the floor, hold there for a count of two, then return to your starting position.
For those of you without stairs, like Thirty-One or Runners Nineteen and Twenty-Two who are trapped in the ale house toilet after a failed romantic escape, try wall press-ups. Stand before a wall with your legs together and your arms straight out with your palms on the wall at shoulder height, shoulder-width apart. Keep your back straight and bend your elbows to bring your nose close to the wall. Hold for two seconds, then return to your starting position.
There will be one minute of press-ups. Begin. 15 seconds down. I believe I am close to finishing the rewiring. 30 seconds down. The drone appears to be coming online. Excellent. 45 seconds down. I imagine wall press-ups are especially useful for Runner Thirteen, who is sheltering in an old police box, to Mr. Yao’s perplexing amusement.
And stop. The drone is ready for launch. With so little fuel, there is no opportunity to test it, but I have a plan in mind. The people need a victory against the horde. To be candid, I feel I need one, too. There will be a music break while I conduct the launch. Recoup or continue doing press-ups. When you hear from me again, we shall find out one way or another whether my efforts here have been in vain.
~
SAM YAO: Uh, hello? Hello, listeners, are you there? It's Sam in the comms shack. Janine told me to take over the broadcast while she launches her drone. Apparently, she's rigged up a remote to steer it, so she's got to focus on that. [paper rustles]Anyway, she's given me a list of exercises for you. Next one is... oh, planking. Janine says it's, uh, an excellent test of patience, inspired by Runner Twelve, who's stuck in the back of an overturned campervan. She's been planking to pass the time.
So lie down on your front, supporting your weight on your forearms and tiptoes. Keep your back straight and lock your core. You're going to hold that pose for 60 seconds. And go. Oh! Got an update from Janine. The drone just launched, and ah, I see it on the cams, rising from the workshop like a big scary robot eagle. 15 seconds down. That's it, plank like Runner Twelve. Halfway done. Huh, that's weird, the drone's just drifting over the horde. I mean, shouldn't it be, I don't know, shooting missiles or something? 45 seconds down. Keep your body locked. Imagine you're that drone soaring through the air like a plank. And done. Good job, everyone!
Yeah, there's still no bombs or missiles from our drone. It's uh, oh, it's losing altitude, drifting east toward Naxdale Settlement. Yeah, they've always been a bit twitchy over there. They keep claiming some mysterious beast is looting their stores. I mean, everyone knows it's just rats. Anyway, I'd better check in with Janine, make sure everything's okay. You guys know the drill, keep exercising or relax in the break and I'll be right back.
~
SAM YAO: Hey, folks! Me again. Couldn't get ahold of Janine. She must be busy steering the drone. Well, I guess we should just get on with our exercises. Uh, the next one is inch worming. According to Janine, it's Runner Thirty-One's favorite, even if he only has enough space to halfway do it in his pantry. Janine says it's the kind of bracing challenge that patience sometimes earns. Right.
So stand up straight, feet hip-width apart, then slowly bend forward, putting your hands on the floor in front of your feet as near as you can get them to your toes. Walk your hands forward, keeping your abs engaged, until your back is completely straight, then reverse it. Walk your arms back to your feet and stand up straight again. And well, just keep doing that over and over again for one minute. Ready? And go.
Hmm. Uh, you've done 15 seconds. Oh, that drone is getting really low. It's banking. Oh my God, it's going down!. Uh... uh, sorry, listeners. Um, yeah, you're halfway done. I'm just a bit distracted here. The drone’s careered right into the middle of Naxdale Settlement. Uh, I'm checking nearby cams. This can't be good. Uh, yeah, 15 seconds left, guys. Looks like the locals in Naxdale are surrounding our crashed drone. They look really agitated. Uh, good job, everyone. That's one minute.
Listen, I'm gonna raise Janine, find out what's happening. You just... hang in there. Janine's been slaving over that thing for weeks. If it's some kind of dud, she'll be devastated. Oh God, I hope Naxdale don't think we're attacking them. Okay, this could be bad, but don't panic. I'm just... just going to put on some relaxing music for you to cool down to while we get this straightened out. Oh boy.
~
JANINE DE LUCA: Hello, listeners. I apologize for alarming you and Mr. Yao. All is well, I simply chose to focus on implementing my plan before explaining it. Lost time is lost health in this case. The drone was never meant to fight the horde, you see. We lack the ammunition for that. No, the drone is packed with medical supplies. I gutted its weapons systems to make room. I have piloted the drone to our nearby neighbors.
And to those listening from Naxdale, you are entitled to 1/8th of its contents. The drone's landing gear is permanently jammed, hence today's crash. You will use spare parts aboard to repair any landing damage and I will pilot it to the next nearest settlement, where this process will repeat. The drone has enough fuel to deliver to every settlement for miles. You will all get the supplies you need. And if anyone tries to take more than their share, well, the drone has a self-destruct.
We could not beat the horde with one damaged drone, listeners, but sometimes the key to victory is redefining your success conditions. No settlement near Abel will run out of key supplies. That is worth a little lost sleep, I fancy. Alas, we are out of time for today's exercise session. Naxdale, I will be in touch to help prepare the drone.
And everyone else, please do watch the skies. I promise when you need Abel Township, we will be there. That goes doubly for Runner Thirty-One and all the other runners out there in tight spaces. One day soon, we will be coming to rescue you, no matter what it takes, I swear. This is Janine De Luca, signing off for now.

Buying Guide to A Electronic Digital Caliper
Electronic caliper gives you accurate reading as well as fast measurement. Anyone can conveniently find this measurement result at the particular LCD screen. Even individuals are able to transmit the measuring result within the measuring; this fact can be an extra benefit of the electronic caliper when it comes to recorded mensuration purposes. Still, intending to take typically the preferred electronic vernier scale ruler could certainly consume your time. It’s a good prudent verdict to obtain a few reliable references. If you think the owners will certainly shop for the battery-powered vernier scaled tool, it is better off acquiring a new right vision associated with what normally causes a good battery-powered vernier scale ruler becomes the better choice. Our staff persist to help teach by spreading some points the users have to keep in mind when grabbing a digital vernier scaled tool via this page. 1. The Longest Measurement The regularly employed of quantification distance of any electronic caliper is usually 6 ". However, that is uncomplicated to obtain the 12″ span types. Looking to encounter your maximum distance demand with the actual need can be critical. That happens to be your top action a person have to be able to account for 2. Accuracy The primary smallest reading of a digital caliper accounts for zero. 01 millimeter (0.0005 inch). In the event that the technicians can obtain the more salutary resolution, it is great. As our specialists explore around the shop, it’s hopeless. Often the only option you could conduct to get that will tiniest graduation is through purchasing some sort of digital mic. However fine, this measuring tool isn't like the vernier scale ruler the time executing some sort of mensuration. And yet, don't forget that this tiniest least count is not all of the factors for quantification trustworthiness. You have to bring accuracy into mind too. Accuracy can be translated as how matching rate to the world-accepted version. An examination will complete it. The engineers could take a calibration tool called block gauge. When it comes to serious calibration, you ought to test it with the well-established standard. #3. Liquid Crystal Display Interface Why need to consider the display monitor? It is required to present this quantification number visibly. A couple of engineers might suffer from vision difficulty while typically the figures presented on your Liquid Crystal Display happen to be pretty undersized. Besides, various other people in many cases use this vernier tool throughout low light. In this situation, the engineers must find one that using a good backlight function on this Liquid Crystal Display touchscreen. That highlight likewise lets the engineers enjoy the interface together with ease on a brighter day. 4. Buttons You can feel that one of the featured benefits of a battery-powered vernier scaled tool is the features the idea has. The operators can easily quickly click often the panels to instruct the measurement to begin and pause the reading, hang on readout, transform graduation readout, determine the particular zero level, & perhaps transmit often the measuring data. It's not weird there are little control keys but incorporate four functions. This depends about what this item delivers. Nonetheless, the thing that we realize the particular highly critical versions are really often the buttons regarding transformation system reading on/off, as well as zero number setting. Therefore, verify your LCD display vernier scale ruler includes these kinds of features at any rate. #5. Liquid plus Dust Protection Doing the job in a very rainy situation may result in impairment into its electronic digital caliper. If liquid escape and go into the digital circuit’s inner pieces, the potential problem is usually that disrupts the readout system. The defective event is the product misguides the owners through providing a mistaken reading. Often the same event goes with soil. The electronic circuit can be interefered with In the event you require to safeguard your vernier scale ruler via sweat & grime, the operators gotta obtain the versions that labels Ingress Protection scoring certified. The Ingress Protection (IP) rate commonly goes utilizing two information symbolizing often the particles & liquid resistance level. Our people recommend the owners pick this ones along with at least IP54. figure 5 equals that can protect from dust particles throughout common practice. At the same time figure four shows that it does secure from fluid the fact that is usually bespattered from any angle Every time using a good IP54 certified caliper, the operators do not need to be panic over applying it on a rainy day or mid-day in the open air. #6. Real Time Reading on Another Device Transferrable Data output means a new feature of any LCD display caliper. It can be operating with a cord as well as cordless. It allows the owners for you to broadcast the reading straight into a separated system, for instance the personal computer or gadget. Instead of using a good notice, that might take lengthier for record, the engineers can acquire numerous results with effortless plus sooner, with no importance to utilize any pen. Whenever you would like to conduct a several time measurement, we say this feature is going to facilitate the task done a lot quicker. #7. Battery Power One next key the technicians can give consideration to will be the electrical power type. That need to be unproblematic to help obtain so that any electrical power substitution is straight forward in order to accomplish. #8. Feedback In some cases, a good item properties doesn’t seem as claimed by simply this firm. In this case, a person should calibrate the vernier scaled tool prior to using it to establish it is precise spec. To prevent this specific, the owners may grab a few glances at the user feedback. Summary The mentioned are a range of things we all can point out to think about before shopping the LCD display caliper. Ideally, those facts could serve you shape typically the battery-powered vernier scale ruler of which the technicians need or maybe intend. Whenever the operators wanna save time, you need to hunt for a couple of references of excellent ten finest battery-powered vernier scaled tools on the internet. With luck, the idea does enable the engineers narrow the picks instead of getting right into often the market then render the choices starting from zero. Check out the spec and reviews. Thank You! Talentswap Au Pologue: Part 3
This isn’t getting much attention, but I’m still working on it! I really hope more people see this soon, I’m working hard on it and it’s a real passion of mine. Also sorry for any spelling/grammar mistakes, I didn’t read this over before posting this, I wanted to get it out quickly.
Kaede looks at the list in her hands, and goes through it quickly, not dwelling too long on anyone in particular. Each person got pointed to as she went through the list, allowing Kaito a few seconds to try and memorize and match names to appearances.
Kirumi Tojo, Ultimate Martial Artist- Light green long hair tied up with a ribbon, wearing a  short button up and tie with a few colored bandaids on her arms.
Himiko Yumeno, Ultimate Pop Sensation- Short bob of red hair, wearing a frilly light red and pink dress with several bracelets on her arms and pins in her hair. The one currently putting the colored band-aids on Kirumi’s arms.
Angie Yonaga, Ultimate Clairvoyant - White hair cut straight and short, wearing a  purple cloak, several piercings, scattered tattoos on her exposed skin of her arms, legs, and stomach. Currently talking to Rantaro.
Rantaro Amami, Ultimate Gambler- Short green hair, wearing a vest and bowtie, sleeve of tattoos. Currently listening to Angie ramble.
Gonta Gokuhara, Ultimate Moral Compass- Long green hair in a loose ponytail, very muscular, wearing a school uniform. Trying to get Ryoma to stop smoking
Ryoma Hoshi, Ultimate Biker Gang Leader- Very short, wearing a beanie and leather jacket, carries a pack of cigarettes. Currently smoking and being worried over by Gonta.
Tsumugi Shirogane, Ultimate Swimming Pro- Long blue hair in a high ponytail, wearing a baggy jacket and athletic shorts. Currently talking to Tenko.
Tenko Chabashira, Ultimate Softball Player- Dark green hair in a braid, wearing a star covered ballcap and a jean jacket with pins on it over a t-shirt and pants with holes in them. Currently talking to Tsumugi.
Kiibo Iidabashi, Ultimate Programmer- White hair, wearing a green and grey hoodie and headphones. Currently standing away from the others with his headphones on.
Korekiyo Shinguji, Ultimate Writing Prodigy- Long straight blue hair, round glasses, a small black mask over his mouth, wearing a sweater and jeans. Currently standing next to Kiibo, also away from the main group.
After going through the names, Kaede looks at him with a small smile.
“Got it alright?” She asks, still holding the list. Despite not fully memorizing the people, names, and talents in such a small window of time, he nods.
“Yup.” He’s lying, but she doesn’t seem to catch on, simply folding the paper and putting it back into her pocket.
Kaito lets his eyes wander, gazing over the grouped up people. For the situation they were all in, they seemed surprisingly put together. At least no one was freaking out, so that’s a good sign. They were all ultimates though, so that is to be expected.
He cleared his throat, turning to Kaede.
“So, what now? None of us know how we got here, the windows are closed off, I’m assuming there’s no exit. And there’s no teachers, from what I’ve seen.” He questioned, almost into thin air as Kaede had no answers for him.
Thankfully, there was someone who could answer his question for him. As soon as he asked the question, an annoyingly high pitched voice called out.
“Ahem! Ahem! Mic check, one two! This is a test of the school broadcast system!
It rang out throughout the room, followed by a loud chime.
Ding dong, bing bong
Everyone turned their heads to the noise, and saw a monitor at the front of the room spark to life. Through static, a small, bear shaped silhouette could be seen.
“Am I on? Can everyone hear me? Okay, well then, to all incoming students, I would like to begin the entrance ceremony! We’ll be starting at about… right now! Please make your way to the gym at your earliest convenience. That’s all! I’ll be waiting~”
After the sing-songy voice cut off, everyone stood silent for a few moments.
What the hell?
“What the hell?!” Someone shouted out, speaking what everyone was thinking. Kaito turned to the voice, seeing Miu still staring at the monitor, her face one of confused shock. At her comment, everyone else looked around nervously, unsure what to do,
“Hey now, let’s just stay calm. This is probably just to get us excited for the entrance ceremony, that’s all.” The green haired guy in the vest and bowtie stepped forward, a calm smile on his face. Rantaro, Kaito reminded himself.
“A-Are you sure? This all seems too strange to be normal for a school, but I don’t know.” The kid with the headphones replied nervously, his headphones now dangling at the sides of his neck.
“I’m sure we’ll be okay Kiibo, I mean, we’re all okay now, right?” Himiko smiles at the taller student, who looked away, avoiding eye contact, and instead stared at the ground.
“Yeah, alright.” Kiibo nods, and Himiko grabs his hand in a comforting gesture.
As soon as she does that, there’s a scoff from the front of the entrance hall. Facing the noise, Kaito notices it’s the purple haired kid from earlier, looking at the scene with a small sneer.
Without saying a word, he turns around and walks out of the room, heading down the hall and towards the gymnasium, leaving everyone else behind.
Tenko and Tsumugi exchanged looks.
“What’s his deal?” The girl haired girl commented, snarky and obviously not a fan of his attitude.
“I’m not sure, but he does seem to have the right idea. If the entrance ceremony is starting, wouldn’t it be a good idea to head to the gym?” Tsumugi adds, talking to no one in particular. The others look around, before unanimously deciding that heading to the gym would be the best idea at the moment.
The group of 15 split into smaller groups as they walked down the halls, similar to the groups in the entrance hall. Maki and Shuichi, Tsumugi and Korekiyo, Gonta and Kirumi, Angie, Ryoma, and Rantaro, Tenko, Himiko, and Kiibo, and Kaito, Miu, and Kaede. Together they headed to the gym, the purple haired kid already there waiting for them.
Next to Kaito, he heard Kaede speak up to both him and Miu.
“Don’t you think it’s odd we didn’t see any other students on our way here?”
Now that he thought about it, yeah that did seem pretty weird. Judging by the look on Miu’s face, she thought so too.
“Hey, you’re right. Where the hell is everyone?” Miu shouts out, a little louder than necessary.
The response she got was similar to Kaito’s in the Entrance Hall, replied to by the same high pitched voice.
“Hey there, howdy, hello! Is everyone here?”
Without waiting for anyone to answer, they continued.
“Good! Then, let’s get things rolling!”
As soon as those words were spoken, a small, animatronic teddy bear popped out from behind the podium on the stage, its body split into a half of black and a half of white. No one dared to move or speak for a few seconds, trying to take it in.
“Is that… a stuffed bear?” Korekiyo asked out loud, voice quiet and full of disbelief.
“I am not a stuffed bear!” The bear cried out, angry at that notion.
“I am Monokuma! This school’s headmaster.”
Just when I thought this day couldn’t get any weirder.
The bear stepped down from the podium and walked closer to the students, and the knot of anxiety that’d slowly been accumulating in Kaito’s stomach turned to outright dread as he realized how absolutely screwed they were. This was definitely not a normal school, much too weird for Hope’s Peak, and certainly not a school that made the tiniest bit of sense.
“Nice to meet you all!”
After Monokuma finished his introduction, everyone stood still and quiet, just staring at the bear.
“Um, is anyone else seeing and hearing the same thing? I’m not hallucinating this?” Tsumugi asked, looking at the other for confirmation.
“I am not a stuffed bear!! How many times do I have to tell you!” He yelled out angrily, jumping out at her and causing her to flinch back.
“Eeeeek! Get away from me!!” She yelled, putting her hands in front of her face. Quickly, Tenko, who’d been standing next to Tsumugi, jumped in front of her, hands out wide.
“Back up little dude.” The green-haired girl hissed out, glaring at the bear.
“Stop it, both of you!! It’s not like it can do anything to you, even if it can… walk and talk, for some reason.” Kaede tried to reason, not wanting people to get worked up for no reason.
“No no, little miss jumpy over here has the right idea. I could kill you if I wanted!” The bear chuckled, causing a few people to exchange looks.
“Well, anyway, do you happen to know why we’re here, mister...Monokuma?” Gonta speaks up, ignoring the potential death threat in favor of getting some answers.
“Ah, yes! Of course, that is why I brought you all here!” Monokuma exclaims, and a few students relaxed a bit at the notion that their questions would soon be addressed.
Kaito wasn’t one of those. He wasn’t sure why, but he just felt…off. Something wasn't right here, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
Monokuma cleared his throat(?).
“Now, continuing with the entrance ceremony! First, we should address what your school life will be like here! Yes, this should be the first thing to talk about since you’ll be living the rest of your lives out here.”
He said it so calmly, yet Kaito felt his heart stop. Looking around at everyone else, they seem to have heard it too, all wearing similar expressions
“Yes yes, you students are the hope of this world! You will all spend the rest of your life designated only to the grounds of this school, protected from the outside world!”
“H-Huh? That’s not… you’re not serious are you?” Kaito spoke, now hoping that this was all an extremely elaborate prank like he’d thought in the beginning.
“I am one hundred percent serious, my little luckster! But do not worry, we have quite the budget, so your life here will be quite comfortable! You will be more than accommodated for here at the academy.”
“Wait, so we’re stuck here? With no way out?!” Tenko shouts, her eyes wide with fear.
“Yup! You’re all completely cut off from the outside world! You can call for help all you want, but you’re stuck within these walls for the rest of your life!”
The room was silent, everyone quietly panicking at the news that they’re stuck in here forever. What about their f”milies? Their friends on the outside? Their lives on the outside?
“Aww, why do you all look so glum! You all came here of your own free will, didn’t you?”
Well, he isn’t entirely wrong.
“I guess you’ll all be happy to hear, there is something I forgot to mention. There is one way out, and only one.”
Everyone perked their heads up at that, some skeptic, others willing to listen.
“I’ve created a special rule, allowing those who wish to leave the ability to do so! With some conditions of course.”
“Spit it out already, we’re tired of waiting.” Ryoma grumbled, looking heavily annoyed at all this stalling and back and forths.
“Hold your horses, I’m getting to that!” The bear shouted, angry.
“Now then, what I was trying to say is that this school has what is called a Graduation Clause. The lifestyle you all will have here is one of order, but should someone interrupt said order, they and they alone would be allowed to leave.”
Kaito quirked an eyebrow.
“Interrupt the order? What does that mean?”
“Ah, curious one, aren’t you. What I mean by that is, in order to leave, someone needs to commit a crime most unspeakable, one that would truly disrupt the natural order. Murder, to be more specific.”
At that, everyone’s face paled a good few shades.
“Asphyxiation, blood loss, snapping of the neck, cutting off all blood flow to the brain, get creative! It doesn’t matter the process, all that matters is someone’s heart stops beating! That is the only way to escape this school.”
Katio could feel his breath picking up, panic becoming the leading emotion in his head. Kill someone to leave? That’s insane!! He was losing his grip, heart beating out of his chest and his hands gripping the sleeves of the others absurdly tight. A hand dropped to his soldier, surprisingly calm. He looked up and saw the Ultimate Affluent Progeny, lips in a taut line as she stared at the black and white bear.
“What makes you think we’ll just go along with this? Do you forget we’re children? The chances of us getting the nerve to kill someone is absolutely absurd, and this is considering you’re telling the truth. Chances are, this is some trick, a prank of some sort. Why someone would go through this much trouble to prank us, I don’t know, but there is no way you would be allowed to do this, considering some of our home lives.” Kaede spoke with such confidence and authority, the kind Kaito likes to pretend to have but could never amount to. A kind of confidence bread by experience, one she could only get in the kind of life she lives.
The bear quirked his little head.
“You all keep acting like this isn’t real. What is it gonna take to convince you that you’re stuck here forever? Because this isn’t a joke you know.”
As soon as Monokuma finished his sentence, there was a short rustling sound, a blur of motion, and suddenly, Monokuma was being held in the air. Holding him up in a death grip was the short purple haired kid, an ice glare on his face.
“I don’t know what your game is, or what psycho decided it would be a fun idea to mess with us. Whatever your reason, I’m not a fan, so I’m giving you about ten seconds to cut this shit out before I destroy your little toy.”
“A-Ah! This is certainly unexpected!”
“10.”
“Hold on now! You have no idea what I’m capable of little boy-” The grip on the bear’s face tightened.
“9.”
“You don’t want to do this, trust me.”
“8.”
“Alright, if this is what you want!”
“8.” An autonomous voice joined in with the smaller boy’s counting.
“7.”
“7.”
“Hey, m-maybe you should put it down.” Himiko stepped forward towards the boy and the robot.
“Stay out of this!” The boy snapped, causing Himiko to yank her hand back.
“6.”
“6.”
“She has a point, I feel like you should let go of the-” Kirumi tried to reason, but was interrupted.
“5.”
“5.”
There were some metal clanging noises.
“What the hell is that?” Kaito shouted out.
“4.”
“4.”
“Seriously man, put the damn thing down!” Ryoma shouted, but he was ignored as well.”
“3.”
“3.”
“2.”
“2.”
The metal clanging got louder, and Kaito moved before he could think, his panic fueled adrenaline making him do something he normally wouldn’t.
“1.”
As soon as he spoke the last number, Kaito pushed the bear out of his hands, stopping him from destroying it. The boy turned to the much taller one, the icy glare now directed to him.
“What the he-!” He was cut off as metal spikes sprung out of the belly of Monokuma, shooting straight up and out to the spot the kid previously stood, and still would have if he had still been holding the bear. The spikes pierced through the air, ripping through the fabric on the short kid’s shirt sleeve and the side of Kaito’s sweater, cutting through the skin with the tips of the metal. Both let out a surprised cry of pain, and Monokuma dropped on the floor with a small CLANG.
Kaito gripped his side with his opposite hand, a pained grimace on his face as he stared at the bear. He heard a few startled cries from behind him, and soon felt a pair of hands on his shoulders. Turning around, his face met a worried Miu’s, with Kaede soon behind him.
“Holy shit, you alright dude?”
Breathing heavily, Kaito nodded.
“Yeah...yeah I’m okay.”
No one had time to move much before the metal spikes returned to the belly of the robot, sinking back in and being covered up as though they weren’t even there in the first place. Monokuma sprung up with a hearty chuckle.
“Looks like you got saved before I could skewer you! Well, at least now you know that I am serious about this! If that nosy kid hadn’t saved your ass, you’d be good as a shish-kebab!”
He laughed again.
“Now, it’s important to know that violence against the headmaster is strictly against the rules! I’ll let you off with a warning this time, but anyone else who disobeys the rules won’t be let off that easily.”
Everyone was silent, the gravity of the situation finally dawning on those who’d been skeptical before.
“I’m not unfair though! I’ll be giving you all fully digital e-Handbooks so that you know the rules of the school and what not to do! Remember, there are surveillance cameras all over the school, so don’t even think about getting away with anything naughty.”
Dread settled over the entire gym, everyone staring down at the handbooks being held to them as Monokuma went down the line. Once all were handed out, Monokuma straightened out.
“Well then, that’s the end of the entrance ceremony! I hope you all have a wonderfully depressing school life here at the school, and I look forward to what kind of murders you decide to come up with!”
He gave us a small wave, his unnerving half-smile still plastering on his face.
“See ya!”
And like that, he was gone, leaving us all to our own devices.
“Well, shit.”

Sweet Nothing (MHA Staff AU Fanfiction)
Tumblr media
Chapter 1
Warnings: None, completely swf
"A devastating loss to the American people to lose one of the most beloved heroes. People are still rioting outside of the court as you see Zion and other Pro-Heroes walk out."
Did I expect to have my license suspended after backing up victims of my colleague? Not exactly. Am I upset about it? Not entirely. My time in the U.S wasn't the best, I only stayed for my students, but now without my hero license, I can forget having my job at Cal Academy.
As I walked out of the courthouse, I gave my best smile for those looking and the press. Nerves continued to crawl up my spine as I tried my best to keep my cool. I can't make another scene as I did inside. Reporters flooded in, pestering me to get my opinion on one of my most significant failures.
"I can't describe how disappointing the outcome of the case was, but sometimes things happen. The cards just weren't in our favor. I just hope that people here and at home take this as a reminder of how heroes can fail sometimes, but it doesn't mean that hope is lost forever. I am sure that today is just a setback. Have a good day, and eventually, I will be back once my suspension ends." I smiled and nodded, making my way past the reporters.
"What will you be doing during your time in suspension?" A reporter reached out their microphone over my shoulder.
I thought for a moment. I was thinking back to a conversation I had with my old principal before this trial.
"If all goes wrong. Or something else occurs, and you want to come back. Along with most of the UA staff, I wanted to start a mental health program for the students. Specifically, a counselor or therapist per class. I think it will suit you well to be a counselor here." The calm and reassuring tone Nezu's voice always seemed to have calmed my nerves and made sure I always knew I had someone at my corner at all times.
I turned to the reporter and smirked, "I'll be in Japan."
Present Day
Okay, maybe I shouldn't have taken up Nezu's offer after all.
Class 1-A
Counselor: Mai Montoya
Homeroom Teacher: Shota Aizawa
The stupid mouse-dog-bear thing paired me up with Aizawa? AIZAWA! This is just like when he recommended me for the hero course the first time I ended up at UA.
"You okay? You look like you're about to vomit." Lily, a fellow friend from Cal Academy that Nezu hired, asked.
"I just might. Why must Nezu make things difficult for me?" I handed her my form and rubbed my temples.
She looked at the form and then put her hand on her hip, "I don't see anything wrong with this. There are only twenty students."
I stared up at her. I completely forgot that she's not only new to the school but new to Japan, so she doesn't know anyone but me. "It's not the number of students. I could care less about that. Nezu could give me two hundred kids, and I won't complain. It's the homeroom teacher I have a problem with."
She looks again, "Shota Aizawa. Now, why does that sound familiar?" She scratches her head. A few baby hairs start sticking out of her bun as I just continue to contemplate how my life led me here.
"Do you remember the group of friends I had before graduating UA and coming back to the US?" She nodded, "Do you remember the one specific friend that I stopped talking to?" She shook her head, "Sorry, the friend that stopped talking to me?"
"OH! Oh, wait... Oh no... he's the homeroom teacher?" Lily bit her lip and went to reach for the bottle of water while looking at her class information. "I thought you guys resolved things the last time you came to Japan to help Captain Celebrity five years ago." She took a huge swig of her bottle.
"Kind of, but not really. We talked because it had something to do with a case he was working on, but after that, it was mainly me talking to Kayama and Kayama bothering him. Or me talking to Mic, and he talks to him." I gave an embarrassed smile as Lily glared at me. "It's not my responsibility to patch things up with him; he cut me off."
She took another swig, "Maybe since you tell Principal Nezu everything, he thought you guys needed a push to get back together. Weren't you guys inseparable?"
"We were not inseparable. And Nezu should stop meddling; he's been like this since I was fifteen." I check the time on my laptop to see it was almost time for homeroom and start packing up to meet my new students. "It's almost time for the classes to start. Nezu wanted us to introduce ourselves to the students. Do you need me to show you where Class 1-B is located again? Do you need me to translate for you with the students?"
She shook her head and told me that she was fine and made her way out with me. She kept reassuring me that everything was going to be okay. But honestly, I wasn't listening. Being back at UA made me uneasy; it felt like my first day as a student here. Nervous and scared. Only this time, I had no reason to be. Maybe it was nostalgia. Or perhaps it was just a lot of, hmph. What the hell? I look down to see a familiar yellow sleeping bag at my feet. I turned to my left to see Lily was gone and that I already made it to classroom 1-A. Not only that, I met with the eyes of terrified students. I looked back down to see grey eyes popping out of the sleeping bag staring at me.
"I honestly thought the form was a joke." There it was. That stupid gruffly monotoned voice. It took all I had not to roll my eyes.
"Nice to see that in almost fifteen years, you kept that sleeping bag." I walked over the giant caterpillar of depression and into the classroom.
"It took you guys more than eight seconds to quiet down. That's not going to work." I heard the man say as he zipped out of his sleeping bag. "My name is Shota Aizawa. I'll be your homeroom teacher. And the woman over there, she is Mai Montoya, your counselor." I smiled and waved to students. It was met with mostly enthusiastic responses, aside from one kid grunting and another one practically drooling. Make a note not to wear a pencil skirt and a button-up as long as I'm that kid's counselor. Aizawa then proceeded to take a gym uniform out and told the students to get dressed and ready for training. He turned to look at me as the kids made their way out of the class, "You still do that face."
I blinked, "What face?"
"The face you do when you're concentrating on something too hard. What is it?"
"Oh." After fourteen years, he remembers that? "It's nothing; I just think that it's the first day, and maybe training should wait a little while." He turns and ignores me. "Hey, wait up!"
"I need to know how their quirks work, and the earlier they train, the earlier we can make then better heroes."
"It's only the first day, though. They could do introductions and talk about their quirks. Plus, I thought I saw you when the staff was watching the entrance exams; you should already have an idea." I pointed.
"It's not the same as in person." Was all he responded, "I'm their teacher so let me do what I normally do. You're only here to observe."
"I am here to introduce myself and get to know the students. And we are meant to collaborate, Sh... Aizawa." Eeeeeggggggg almost did a no-no right there. He didn't spare me a second glance, but I could tell that I annoyed him. He was already irritating me too. I just sighed and decided to sit on the bench and take my laptop out to start jotting down notes as I waited for the students to arrive.
Once the students arrived, Aizawa explained that he was making them do a Quirk Apprehension Test. They all seemed okay until he mentioned that whoever scored the lowest would be expelled. Kayama told me once about how Aizawa likes to expel students, but I didn't think it would be so early. I neglected the decision to interject; I didn't want to piss him off more so soon.
"Yes?" Aizawa spoke.
"My name is Tenya Iida. I have a question about the counselor?" I looked up to see a whole ocean of eyes looking at me.
I stood up and smooth out my skirt, "What is your question, Iida?"
"Why didn't we get a proper introduction yet?"
"Oh, uh, I was waiting until your teacher was done explaining the lesson so I can explain not only myself but the purpose of the new mental health program at UA." I smiled. "But since you asked, um, I guess it wouldn't hurt to give you the introduction now." I nodded over to Aizawa to get permission to speak more, knowing this was taking time away from his lesson. "Okay, well, as said before, I am Mai Montoya, your counselor. I am part of the new mental health program as a way for the school to become more engaged in students' mental health. I, along with many other Pro Heroes, felt that hero programs don't focus on the importance of mental health for both general students and hero students. Principal Nezu saw the importance and asked me to help be in charge of it. I am originally from the U.S, but I used to be a UA student, so that's how Nezu and I know each other."
Another student raised their hand to ask a question; she had pink skin and cute little horns popping out of her head, "Wait, 'I, along with other Pro Heroes.' You're a pro?"
I rubbed my neck, "Yes, I am a Pro Hero. I am currently not on active duty, though." Here we go. "Let me quickly explain myself, so you feel more inclined to trust me. I am the Pro Hero Zion..."
A green hair boy spoke up, "The U.S's Number 2 Hero that recently got their license suspended? Oh my god, why are you here in Japan? Our counselor is a top hero!"
I was speechless, this kid knew about... oh, who am I kidding the whole case was broadcasted all over the world. "As I was saying, yes, I have my Pro Hero license suspended in the U.S. currently. However, I still have my Japanese Hero License, so I am still a pro. I legally am not allowed to talk about any details about my suspension, though. Just know that the suspension isn't getting lifted anytime soon, so that's why I decided to move back to Japan." I waited for more interruptions.
"Are you allowed to train us too?" The boy asked.
"I wasn't hired for that. As a disclaimer, I only want to do my work at UA; I have to avoid any other scandals from hero work because of my suspension. So you won't be seeing me on the news anytime soon while I am here." They all awed and disappointedly huffed. Afterward, I gave out my email and other ways to contact me to make any appointments with me, and with that, their apprehension test started.
I stood to the side and analyzed the students in their testing environments for the most part. I found out the green-haired boy was named Izuku Midoriya, and the pink girl was Mina Ashido. Everyone seemed pretty determined to pass, mainly because of the threat of expulsion, which I guess is good, but I still don't think scaring the kids to do good was the best way to teach. "It's a logical deception; I have no plans to expel anyone." Aizawa came up to me with a stern face.
"That makes it worse. You scared them, and now they're not going to trust you." I made sure I wrote that piece of information in my notes about the class. The man just shrugged. "They have a lot of potentials. These quirks are fantastic." He just grunted. "I'm trying to have a conversation with you. Especially since you initiated it."
"I'm sorry to hear about your license suspension. You didn't deserve that." Aizawa just stared at the students and avoided looking at me.
"Things happen. I can't feel sorry for myself. I didn't even like working for that agency anyways." I brushed it off. "I just hate feeling that I failed to bring justice to those girls, especially since they reminded me of my students. Young, hopeful, ready to save the world. Now, they're scared and feel like there's no purpose in saving anyone if even heroes can be villains." I rested my chin on my fist as I watched the young heroes in front of me. Then I noticed one of the students going berserk with his explosion quirk on Midoriya. "You might want to keep an eye on Bakugou. His personality is almost as explosive as his quirk."
"I already have a feeling these kids are going to make me want to quit teaching," Aizawa grumbled. The next thing I saw was his capture weapon wrapped around the blond boy to stop him from blowing up Midoriya. I tried my best to contain my laughter at the kids' reaction to him, bringing it out again. From the corner of my eye, I noticed a blond crouching behind the corner of the building, analyzing the students as well-- All Might.
I rolled my eyes and got up. "I have to go back to my office. I'll see you, kids, later after you go through your general classes to see how you guys are adjusting." I went around the corner to meet with the seven-foot-two giant of a man. "What's up, Toshinori?"
The poor guy didn't see me and nearly almost transformed into his skinny form. "Young Montoya! It's wonderful to see you! Please don't tell Aizawa I'm here." He went to hug me (more like lifted me off the ground) and then hunch down.
I giggled, "Oh, I am pretty sure he noticed; he's just not saying anything about it."
"I'm just observing his teaching style since it's my first year as a teacher." He rubbed the back of his neck.
I hugged my laptop and levitated a little to get on his level, "I suggest telling him that you want to learn from him. I have to go, so have fun." I gave him a quick hug and left.
"I've missed you. Maybe you can finally take my offer of taking over my agency."
"Not this again," I grunted. "See you around, Toshinori. Let me know when you want teaching advice."
I love Toshinori, but after his injury ten years ago, he's been trying to convince nonstop to take care of his agency in case the worst would happen. I always just brushed it off. I didn't want that type of responsibility. My whole career in the U.S, people have compared me to him. And I never minded it, it was an honor to be compared to the symbol of peace. But the idea of actually taking the mantle never sat right with me. And I highly doubt it ever will after now being the only top hero to have a license suspension. After finding out Toshinori was going to be a teacher to find a new person to take his quirk, I got more nervous for him and the future of the new person to have One for All. With that in mind, it does give me a reason to try and take the mantle instead of putting it all on a student. It's irresponsible to give all that pressure onto a child. I guess that's mainly the reason why they added the mental health program. To make sure the kids aren't under a lot of pressure.

Galactic Quarrels: Lift-Off
There it is, standing atop of a launch platform in the grassy plains of the Sahara, the first intergalactic spacecraft of the UTF. The Green Sahara project is one of humanity’s most ambitious project they have ever pulled off, turning the desolate desert into a green, vibrant with life, forests, and fertile soil.
Drawn on the side of its hull is the UTF Flag, and under it, painted with bold white text is “TFS Ambition” Besides the construction of the domes, this, is humanity’s greatest achievement in history.
A white hunk of metal pointed at the sky, ready to spearhead humanity into a new era of intergalactic exploration. Engineering and land crew scattered across the field and landing platform, dwarfed by the massive starship and its open cargo ramp revealing it’s dark cargo hold as vehicles drive up and down the ramp transporting the necessary components and rations the crew needed for their journey.
In its center, is the Hyperdrive, the pride of human inventions. The hyperdrive can open a subspace tunnel to its destination and travel through it almost instantaneously, well, that’s what it’s expected to do. With no prototype testing, everyone was certain that the ship is just a massive metal death trap, even the High Marshall of the UTF is doubting the hyperdrive’s hypothesized capabilities.
This entire event can be humanity’s proudest moments, or humanity’s most embarrassing, and catastrophic technological failure in centuries. The crowd formed a few kilometers away from the launch site is in the thousands and the assembled stage for the highest-ranking crew members stood strong under the heat of the African sun. UTF, UNE, and ROF representatives sat in their VIP seats on the front, while senior officers and the chosen crew sat behind them.
The UTA government is a Representative Democracy with militaristic influence. Each human government in its borders must choose officials to become representatives at UTF meetings, these meetings will be sent up to the National Council where a group of twenty UTF council members will converse with the representatives. The decisions in these meetings will then be sent up to the Marshalls, this group of nine people will answer to the High Marshall.
Every citizen has the right to vote, with each Marshal and the High Marshall having a service term of twenty years where a national election will take place on every human world to vote for the next High Marshall and his/her Marshalls.
Marshall Oprinchuk Nil Vladislavovich walked up to the stage wearing his ceremonial uniform that consists of a military black suit, the UTA Emblem on his upper left breast and a red and black with three white stripes armband on his left arm. He proudly stood in front of the audience and VIPs, other marshalls and part of the national council are here. He looked down at his wrist, a holographic projection of the script he has to read for the speech.
The blonde-haired man with blue eyes took a deep breath, as his hands hold the lectern. “Ladies and Gentlemen, in this glorious, and joyful day, we are gathered here to witness the launch of humanity’s first-ever intergalactic starships, the TFS Ambition. Years of technological innovations and development lead us straight to this moment, where humanity will finally achieve its dreams of sailing across the black sea we call space, the final frontier.”
Vlad paused and looked at the crowd, all silent, filled with patriotism and pride of humanity. “The ship and her crew will embark on a journey, like none other. They will explore the great unknown as the first pioneers of intergalactic travel. They will explore distant stars, explore countless systems for the greatness of humanity and uncover the mysteries of the universe.” Several flashes of cameras taking pictures and live footage of the speech broadcasted across Sol.
Broadcasted all over the world, every restaurant, every mall, every pub and homes, everyone is watching. “These men and women will spearhead us to a new age, of exploration and technological wonders. On their journey, they will face many dangers previously unknown to us, but they will fight through it with courage and bravery,” Vlad leaned forward on the lectern, closer to the mic. “The time has come, the time where the universe meets humanity with all of its might, the time where humanity ascends into the intergalactic stage
I wish the crew of the TFS Ambition good luck, bring humanity into a golden age of technological ascendancy, and prosperity. Thank you” Applause erupts from the crowd, and howling of the excited civilian filled the staging grounds. Vlad walked off the stage and the applause drags on. Taking a seat back on the VIP section, he let out a sigh of relief. The young Marshall’s heart, no older than 28 years old, was beating in fear of messing up the speech.
He received a nudge on the hip from his side, he looked over to see Marshall Jane Honner, the more experienced and prideful Marshall, smiling at him. “You did good kid”
As the applause ends, another man walked up to the stage. Wearing a green army uniform similar to the Marshal’s uniforms in design. The man wearing it is a hardened-veteran, white-bleached hair and a scar-filled face, General Wolf Stone. Walking to the lectern, he holds the edges with his hands as he looked on to the crowd. He breathes in, then started. “I am honored to be able to speak in front of everyone this glorious and prideful day. Since the days of War Amongst Friends, the UTF has evolved into this state of cultural prosperity and endless economic growth, and I am happy to see this development.”
The young General, only recently promoted, is seen as a war hero. He fought and kill like other soldiers in the war, but he saves hundreds of civilian lives in the process, regardless of origin. His most popular act of bravery is the defense of Kohl Union Hospital in Western Europe, the hospital was used as a field hospital for Martian and Pro-Dissolve armies, housing wounded troops and civilians with much martian staff. When the Pro-Earth armies marched on, ignoring the order to fall back, he fought with his unit against the onslaught of Pro-Earth troops, supporting the evacuation of the hospital, instead of the initial plans of abandoning them to their fates.
“The war left people devastated, families separated, cities ruined, and humanity shattered. So I am very pleased that we set our differences aside and form the UTF, and I am proud to become a part of this government.” Wolf looked on to his wife on the far back, smiling with tears, beside her is the smiling seven-year-old Michael Stone. “But humanity managed to rebuild itself, families reunited, and we united under one banner once more.”
“The Grand Army of the UTF will stand side by side with the United Space Corp on this journey, and I wish you all good luck” The applause that followed is not as grand as the previous one, but still ear-deafening nonetheless. Trumpets roared in ceremonial anthem as UTFJets flew overhead creating the UTF flag in the blue sky.
Next on the agenda is singing the UTF anthem, everyone stood up from their seats, while the previously crowded civilians formed symmetrical lines that stretched across the field. Palm to their chest above their hearts, as they sang the anthem. A choir of instruments and their magnificent beautiful sounds filled the staging ground once more, instruments playing as the people sang the lyrics in perfect sync, filled with pride and determination.
Five minutes passed and everyone returned to their seats, The stage’s back curtain was drawn back to reveal the magnificent TFS Ambition in all of its glory. It’s launch thruster spewing cold white smoke, eager and ready to launch. “With the end of this ceremony, without any further interruptions or delays, all remaining crew of the TFS Ambition shall board the vessel,” The female announcer said over the speakers.
The crew for the ceremony stood from their seats and made way to their vehicles, and drove off to the launching platform. The crowd watched in anticipation, the Marshalls and Council Members watched on with pride in their seats. The three massive television screens turned on to show footage of the busy bridge, a camera outside the vessel, and the camera crew keeping an angle on the beauty.
The last of the vehicles parked as the crew hastily entered the spacecraft with the ground crew clear of the launch site. The massive ramp slowly closes with its hydraulics, and with a hiss, the cargo hold is sealed shut. The captain of TFS Ambition already gave a speech earlier at the start of the ceremony, entered the bridge as she sat on the captain seat. “Run diagnostics on all systems, check and double-check the engines and cargo hold”
“All systems optimal, engines are heated up and ready to fire” The Engineering officer reported.
“all cargo and containers have been strapped down and secured for launch Captain,” The logistical head said over comms.
“Check and double-check the reactor coolant, run second diagnostics of every system”
“Coolant is at optimal levels, and all systems re-checked, no anomalies”
The Captain grinned, taking a prideful stance on the captain seat as she looked onwards out the bridge’s windows. “Olympus this is TFS Ambition, all systems checked and we are ready to launch” She contacted the orbital station.
The comms buzzed. “Copy that Ambition, you may launch when ready, good luck out there”
“release platform stabilizers, initiate first burnout sequence”
The ship roared into life as the engines activate sending a small rumble across the ship, the long stabilizers attached to the ship broke off. “Systems are good, hyperdrive secured”
“Initiate second burnout sequence” A larger rumbling occurred on the ship as the engines are tested for any problems for launch.
“All systems green, ready to launch on your command Captain”
The Captain leaned forward in her seat, looking out the window at the blue sky. “Let's meet aliens, engage thruster launch in 5...”The bridge crew, logistics, engineering, medical, and maintenance crew strapped themselves down in their seats. “four... three” The Captain leaned back on the chair strapping herself in also. “Two... one... fire!”
Thrown and pushed back onto their seats, the thrusters fired at full capacity launching the spacecraft into the air and up at the sky. “Lift-off achieved!” everywhere on human worlds, Mars, Luna, Earth, those stationed on the research station above Jupiter, all cheered wildly, happiness and adrenaline flowing through their bodies.
The crew itself was happy that the ship didn’t explode on the launch, but could only smile as the Gs hit them like a truck. They passed the clouds as they began burning through the atmosphere, and a few seconds later, they are in space and the weight was now, non-existent. “Turn off the engines!” The crew was about to cheer before a commanding bark from the captain silenced them. “Don’t celebrate yet, getting out of the atmosphere is easy, the real challenge is will the Hyperdrive work? Or will we be turned into goo”
Aimed at Alpha Centauri, the ship crew run diagnostics once more. Navigations checked and verified their transit route. “Engage hyperdrive” The crew tensed up as the Hyperdrive activates, a rhythmic  “Beat” spreads across the ship slowly going faster, and faster until it’s beating so fast that it's just a single note.
“Warp in 3... 2... 1... warp” In an instant, the crew felt nauseous as the space in front of them opened up into a tunnel, and without skipping a beat, the ship goes barreling through it in speeds humans have never experienced before. And just like that, the ship was gone.
Tumblr media
Attempts on contacting the ship and its crew after the warp was unsuccessful, only static and an empty video feed. Only for the day after, the crew hailed back, and everyone screamed in joy.
The Grand Marshall smiled out from her private estates in the city of New Falklands, a floating city on the southern Atlantic Ocean, the rousing and ear-piercing cheering and screaming from the television, and from the streets and buildings below filled her ears.
“We did it”

He's a trembling mess...face down on his pillow pile while he moves and claws I to a few. All the mixes of the different scents were driving him wild and he would bury his face deeper in them, and react more aggressively-- oh, those poor pillows---- his station was scattered-- sometimes it came through, other times was radio silence-- but between those moments there's a mix of low grunts, static and even a few snarls almost beastiel, animalistic--
Trying to focus on an encrypted channel was a task...but he did get one. But instead of the usual "Good morning darling" or some silly song...what came through was a series of heavy pants and bleating.
