Los Ogu, un grupo étnico que habita la ciudad costera de Badagry, en Nigeria, todavía conservan el extraño culto a los Zangbetos, una tradición ampliamente respetada por los habitantes de la zona.

Los Zangbetos, también conocidos como “guardianes de la noche” o “policías vudú” en la religión yoruba de Benín y Togo, son espíritus que disfrutan danzar vestidos con atuendos a base de hoja de palmera.

La danza consiste en manifestaciones y giros espontáneos que, según la creencia, traen buena fortuna para los habitantes. La leyenda cuenta que, originalmente, los Zangbetos servían como centinelas nocturnos en la ciudad de Hogbonou, Benín.

También eran responsables de la seguridad nocturna en pueblos y aldeanas aledañas, manteniendo a raya a los ladrones y malhechores que buscaban víctimas.

Los Zangbetos suelen manifestarse en ocasiones especiales o cuando la comunidad atraviesa algún contratiempo. La danza pública que realizan consiste en frenéticas rotaciones seguidas por momentos de inmovilidad, momento en que los miembros de grupo los azotan con varas rituales mientras la comunidad entona algunos canticos. Esto marca el momento en que alguien se acerca a la vestimenta ritual para darle vuelta y revelar que no hay nadie dentro. Sin embargo, lo más interesante sucede cuando vuelven a azotar el traje con la vara ritual y el espíritu Zangbeto regresa para seguir danzando y bendiciendo a la comunidad.

En algunos sitios, los habitantes acostumbrar a quemar estos trajes después de las danzas.

La tradición de los Zangbetos está presente en todo el sur de Benín. Otra creencia es que, por las noches, estos espíritus guardianes abandonan sus trajes para sembrar el terror a su paso. Se dirigen a la morada de ladrones, perezosos y adúlteros para cobrar sus malas acciones.

De hecho, parece que la forma del Zangbeto fue especialmente diseñada para infundir miedo: su traje básicamente conforma una enorme máscara conformada por paja multicolor que va de la cabeza a los pies, dando saltos acrobáticos y emitiendo sonidos guturales.

El origen de la leyenda es bastante peculiar: cuentan que tres hermanos tenían conflictos entre sí y disputaban un conflicto; con los dos mayores oponiéndose al más joven. Una noche antes de la batalla, el menor de los hermanos tuvo un sueño donde una figura sobrenatural le aconsejó cubrirse a sus hombres con hojas de palma y hacerlos correr contra los enemigos para que pensaran que se trataba de fantasmas.

El truco funcionó, los hermanos terminaron huyendo y el más joven se convirtió en señor de aquellas tierras. La máscara de Zangbeto es un tributo a esa victoria que con el paso del tiempo se convirtió en objeto de veneración.

Las apariciones de los Zangbetos buscan purificar al pueblo, ahuyentar los males y solicitar protección.
