#850 MY 10 most Weird Superstition moments as a SPORTS FAN !!
Tumblr media
Even though I am not superstitious at all in real life, I literally become a SAINT when my favorite matches are being played. Here are some crazy things which I did over the years
1. My all time favorite was 1998 Sharjah finals. Expectations was high in finals after Sachin’s “Once in a lifetime innings , aka Dust-storm Match”.  Each time I used to tear a book into half, one of Australian wickets used to fall. Data engineering book was broken into multiple parts just to calm my mood and hope that an Australian wicket falls. 5 of Australian wickets fell when I tore the book !!!! I have torn multiple books later on but this trick didn’t work for other matches 😊
2. 2011 World cup finals – I was working in Singapore those days and we had production rollout on the same day. After every over I used to swap cricinfo webpage with timesofindia website. This continued till MSD hit the ball for a six !!!! I avoided having dinner as well to avoid altering the rhythm. I had dinner at midnight 00:30 that night !!
3. Steffi Graf vs Martina Wimbledon finals – My grandmom was there in our home as well that day. Me and my sister used to grab a seat and not move. We both were hardcore Steffi fans. Even my grandmom commented “ Steffi should win as she is more beautiful !! “. Well. She won !.
4. Phil Mickelson found it hard to win his first major. I happened to visit my cousin Ananth’s place in Kentucky when Phil was in contention for 2004 Masters. He happened to win that major and I thoroughly enjoyed it. An year later, he lost a bit of form. He was again in contention in 2005 PGA championships. I enquired Ananth if he is in town. He drove down again over the weekend. Guess what !!. Phil won again. Ananth used to joke that Phil need to pay me handsomely for this superstition belief !!
5. Agassi vs Medvedev 1999 French open finals : My final year engineering exams was going on. My favourite Agassi was out of form for last 2 years. He managed to enter finals in French open, the only slam he had not won. I was a bit disappointed when he had lost to Courier in finals few years back. Agassi lost first 2 sets. I stopped watching the finals. I kept altering the channel only during game break. I found Agassi gaining momentum. I continued this for next 2 hours. Agassi won in 5 sets  to become first player in open era to win all slams atleast once !!. A day earlier I had done similar thing to Steffi vs Hingis match too !!. Hingis was up by a set and 5-2. I used the same trick. Steffi won in 3 sets. Hingis was crying but I was laughing with joy. These 2 legends married later in the year.
6. Nick Faldo ‘s 1996 Augusta Masters – I started watching golf when Nick Faldo was at his peak. I used to keep alarm to wake up late in the night just to watch Golf. 1996 was no different. Greg Norman was leading by 6 strokes going into final round. After every hole, I used to complete one chapter of first year engineering book. I finished 9 chapters in next 2 hours. Guess what !! Faldo was tied with Greg. Greg had choked again in final round of Masters. Greg’s game fell apart. Faldo won his 3rd masters. That happened to be his last major. He handed over Green jacket to the ONE and ONLY Tiger woods in next year’s Masters.
7. 2003 World cup India vs Pakistan match : I didn’t want anybody to change the channel. So I had hidden the remote behind the TV. My dad kept asking for remote to switch during the break. I kept ignoring his request. He finally got the remote when Sachin was in his 90s. He got out for 98. India won though !!
8. 2014 World cup finals : I was and still am a Messi fan . Wanted desperately him to win the world cup. They came so close in 2014 World cup finals only to lose in extra time to Germany. I used to change seat after every 10 minutes. It worked initially as Argentina saved quite a few goals. I got late night phone call from office for some urgent issue. That broke the momentum and Gotze scored the winner for Germany. I was kind of heartbroken. Though call had nothing to do with Argentina loss, I felt that way for almost a month !!
9. 2007 India vs England T20 World cup match : I was on my way to native during the time when this match was going on. I used to get updates via SMS those days. I spent a handful of money to get SMS updates after every 2 minutes that night !!!. I literally shouted when Yuvi hit his 6th six and I got that update in SMS.A different experience altogether !!
10. 2001 India vs Australia Eden gardens match :  When match reached final, I had told my colleagues that though Harbhajan would be key, vital wickets would be taken by Sachin and he will shift momentum. When Sachin grabbed his first wicket, my colleagues had a look at me as if I was a bookie!!. I didn’t get up from the chair and neither moved my chair or even mouse till the end of the match !! Thoroughly enjoyed that match and my legs were numb by the time match had got over

Always felt Gautam Gambhir avoided eye-to-eye contact with me: Pakistan pacer Mohammad Irfan
Mohammad Irfan dismissed Gautam Gambhir four times during the 2012 limited-overs series (T20s and ODIs) in India and the southpaw played only one more white-ball series (vs England) before being dropped.
Tumblr media
Mohd Irfan claimed that it was the 2012 series between India and Pakistan that ended Gautam Gambhir’s career (Courtesy by BCCI)
HIGHLIGHTS
Mohammad Irfan got Gautam Gambhir out 4 times (ODIs & T20Is) in the 2012 series
Gambhir played his last T20 for India against Pakistan at Ahmedabad in that series
Irfan also claimed that Virat Kohli couldn’t read his pace properly in that series
Pakistan’s out-of-favour left-arm pacer Mohammad Irfan has recalled how Gautam Gambhir’s distinct discomfort while facing him during the 2012 bilateral series literally finished the Indian opener’s white-ball career.
Standing tall at 7ft 1 inch, Irfan dismissed Gambhir four times during that limited overs series (T20s and ODIs) and the southpaw played only one more white-ball series for India (vs England) before being dropped.
“When I played against India, they were not comfortable batting against me. Some of them told me in the 2012 series in India that they couldn’t sight my ball properly because of my height and also didn’t read my pace,” Irfan told the ‘Samaa’ channel.
Irfan claimed that it was that particular series that ended Gambhir’s career.
“Gautam Gambhir was afraid of me. I think his career ended because of me. He didn’t return to the team after that,” Irfan told SAMAA TV.
“He didn’t like to face me in match or when both teams had nets, I always felt he avoided eye to eye contact with me. I remember I got out him four times in the 2012 limited over series and he was unnerved against me,” Irfan said.
Gambhir played his last T20 for India against Pakistan at Ahmedabad in that series.
He also appeared in just one more ODI series against England after facing Pakistan in the winter of 2012/2013 and was never picked in white ball format by India again.
To a question, Irfan said he wouldn’t say anyone was “scared of him” but when he went out, people congratulated him for ending Gambhir’s white ball career.
He recalled in the interview that Virat Kohli had told him while batting against him, that he didn’t read his pace properly.
“He told me he thought I would be around 130-135 kph but I had increased my pace and I was bowling around 145 kph and he had problems picking me up. Once when he was batting he tried to pull a good length ball and missed.
“Yuvraj (Singh), who was at the other end told him in Punjabi. Don’t try to pull him, rather try to cut him. Off my third ball, he went for a pull and was caught behind. Yuvi Paji told him… now go back,” Irfan recalled.

Yuvraj Singh Cricketer ,The Prince India Needed, Not Deserved!
About Yuvraj Singh-Yuvraj Singh cricketer of Indian group was just one particular lionheart who came, who saw, who battled who defeated with his sheer talent and genius. As somebody once said if there is ever a publication written on the Indian Cricket, the opening segment will probably belong to Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. MS Dhoni will compose the finishing chapters, however it's Yuvraj Singh, that will feature in the key middle phases, as he's done during his illustrious cricketing career.
Since his introduction under Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj stayed a very important cog at Team India's trip to the top. The type of effect he had on the area was similar to Sir Vivian Richard's in his prime. He had been the Man for the big moments, none more notable than the ICC World Cups at which he's averaging 52.71.
Tumblr media
With two ICC World Cups, he remains among the greatest matchwinners in International cricket. By 2002 Natwest trophy closing to beating six sixes at Stuart Broad's emerging and over as the'Player of the Tournament' at 2011 World Cup, what a remarkable career it's been.
There's none better sight at the Cricketing World compared to the usual Yuvraj Singh along with his tasteful backfoot punches, stunning cover pushes, along with his high backlift that helped him crush enormous sixes so easily. He wasn't only outstanding with all the piano, but he had a gold arm that allowed him to bag 148 global wickets.
His journey started when his dad Yograj Singh, whom he called a Dragon in his final address, reluctantly pushed Yuvraj to make a mark in cricket since his youth days. 'Yuvraj Singh is a dream of Yograj Singh,' stated a proud dad after India's among their favorite sons bid adieu to International cricket. From the press conference, Yuvraj stated how his dad was frustrated to not have the ability to play beneath Kapil Dev in 1983 but had been mighty happy when his son relived his unfolded dream using a performance of his life from the 2011 World Cup.
Yuvraj Singh certainly owned incredible abilities that made him the daring cricketer who oozed course each time he stepped on the field. Throughout his under-15 dayshe won the U-15 World Cup in 1996 and appeared as the Player of the Tournament which affirmed his matchwinning skills before he burst on the International scene. Four Decades after when Team India raised the U-19 World Cup beneath Md.. Yuvraj Singh Ipl

That's when he made a stir with his game-changing art and made his International debut in the 2000 ICC Champions trophy. Yuvraj Singh was just 18 decades and 296 days old on his introduction and still holds the record for being the youngest Indian to attribute within an ICC event. Having lost a chance to bat against Kenya, he got his chance from Australia at the quarter-finals of this championship.
Yuvraj announced his arrival with a scintillating 80-ball 84 that made him youngest Indian batsman to score a half-century in ICC occasions, exceeding Sachin Tendulkar. Him leading India into the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy along with his match-winning knock was a indication of great things to come for the Indian Cricket.
After catching many eyeballs in 2000, Yuvraj failed to turn it in the squad over a few physical fitness concerns. But he roared back into the International scene in 2002 and anchored among the most memorable successes from the Natwest Trophy final against England. It had been Yuvraj Singh's gritty knock following the collapse of this top-order batsmen, which talented the Indian lovers that the iconic moment of Sourav Ganguly's shirtless party in the Lord's balcony. It had been his indomitable approach using the piano, which left him stand out of the remainder of the lot. The Prince had eventually arrived in the Lord's!
Since that sensational dip in England, Yuvraj Singh secured his place at the middle-order much to the joy of Indian lovers. The most memorable spot of the career came from the inaugural version of this T20 World Cup in 2007 when he took the world by storm. Stuart Broad was abandoned smashed as hell broke loose when he had been struck for six sixes in an over from the Southpaw.
In the process, he smashed the quickest international fifty in just 12 chunks, a feat that's still unmatched at the International cricket. India hammered Australia at the semi-final of this championship in which Yuvi played a important role contrary to his favorite opponents. Yuvraj Singh News
On the other hand, the all-rounder called India's 2011 Men's Cricket World Cup triumph as the most critical moment in his career.
Yuvraj Singh has been named the Player of the Tournament because marquee championship which established him among the best limited-overs players of all time. Despite fighting with lung cancer throughout the contest, he defeated us with his all-round operation from the 2011 World Cup. He moved on to become the sole player in World Cup history to score over 300 runs and take 15 wickets in one edition of this World Cup.
The strangest stage of his life came at precisely the exact same year when he had been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in his left lung and also failed chemotherapy treatment following the World Cup. The entire world stood stunned as they prayed to the warrior who had been fighting for his life at Boston. He chose to International cricket following his comeback, but the Yuvraj Singh we understood was passé.
Was missed in 2015 World Cup and also 2016 World T20, he had been remembered in 2017 to combine the side and resolve the number-4 conundrum. Since his collapse 2017 Champions trophy, he had been among those very few mature players to be axed from the group management. He performed his final ODI game against West Indies in Antigua, October 2017 while his closing T20I look came in the season against England in Bengaluru. Fantasy Cricket
Despite his impressive career in the white-ball cricket, the Champion regrets not enjoying more Test matches to the Indian group.
Occasionally sports is much more than simply numbers, along with his stats do not warrant the type of effect Yuvraj Singh has had on Indian Cricket, who'll return as one of the very best middle-order batsmen from the limited overs cricket. Yuvraj Singh was an unstoppable system; he can do everything from magnificent shoots to amazing run-outs to supplying critical breakthroughs in the middle overs. He remains the only player to shoot 2 hat-tricks at one IPL season.
Consistently a selfless cricketer, who blessed us with innumerable memories and plenty of minutes to treasure in his 19-year long outstanding journey. Since Yuvraj Singh hangs his boots out of International cricket, we bow to a few of the best matchwinners in the history of cricket. Favorite
Many would argue that his career was unfulfilled using all the prosperity of talent he owned, but it was his utter prowess to emerge on top at the days of hardship, which left him a real winner.
