An author who reviewed my query letter for a contemporary YA said that my main character, who is 15, needs to be aged up or down because this age is hard to sell. Do you agree that 15 (sophomore) is not a great age for a YA main character? This is a “clean” YA, so the younger age makes sense to me. But I don’t want something like age to be a major red flag in a query letter.

It’s a tough one, to be honest -- There SHOULD be but ISN’T a category for “UpperMG/YoungYA” -- so a lot of books that are about, say, 13-14 year olds end up being shelved in MG, 16-17 year olds end up in YA, and 15 year olds are kind of left in no-mans-land. Your friend might be correct -- I’d go with what you think it should be thematically, and who you think the READER will be. 

Like, if it is about coming of age and breaking away from family etc and it is tonally “teenager” -- and you think the readership is likely to be people aged 12+ -- YA, and make her 16. If it is more about friendship, finding your place in the family or friends group, dealing with things for the very first time, and you think the readership is likely to be 10+ -- MG, and make her 13-14. 

(OR, just keep doing what you are doing - don’t mention her age in the query - and hope people love the pages! After all -- a sophomore could be 16 as well...)
