5 Reasons to Avoid Mixing Scaffold Tower Components
Tumblr media
Safety is the number one priority in construction and maintenance. This is especially true when erecting scaffold towers to work at heights. However, a concerning practice is growing in the industry: mixing and combining tower components from several manufacturers to create a single tower.
Despite its clear simplicity, this approach has significant safety and liability risks that should not be ignored.  Through this article, we aim to shed light on clear warnings against such practices, highlighting the significant safety and liability concerns they entail. Assembling scaffold towers requires rigorous attention to detail and respect for established processes.
Tumblr media
Youngman India, as the exclusive manufacturer of essential components used to construct the Aluminium Ladderspan, stairway, Fitout master, and all other variations of Aluminium Mobile Access Towers, is best positioned to advise on the safety concerns associated with combining components from various manufacturers into a single structure.
1. Expert Advice & Guideline:
Sumit, The Safety First, Scaffold Tower specialist, explains: that Mobile Access Tower systems have been developed, built, and independently certified as per the most recent relevant European Standard, EN 1004-1:2020, which includes material specifications, dimensions, maximum working loads, and safety calculations. Make shifting of different category components in one structure can affect the tower's structural compatibility, rigidity and load-bearing capacity which leads to life-threatening hazards during height work
The Safety First, a major training organization specializing in access tower safety education, has issued a computability standard outlining the strict standards that must be completed before constructing and operating a combination of towers in their training programs

2. Certified Standards:
The structure of the combination of towers, which requires combining components from multiple manufacturers, is subject to major standards imposed by a third-party certification independence recognized by the EA. This certification is essential because it guarantees adherence to the rigorous standards established in EN 1004-1:2020, confirming the tower's structural integrity and safety measures.

3. Comprehensive Manuals For Non-Compliant Towers:
Furthermore, instruction manuals for combination towers must be 3rd-party certified to EN 1004-2:2021. They must include enough information to properly explain any differences between the components of the 'Compatible' and 'Other' towers.
The combination of towers does not meet the standard requirements, and there are no third-party approved bodies capable of providing the necessary certification for such towers. Therefore, it cannot be constructed or used.

4. Complexity, Confusion & Violation of Standards:
Building a combination of towers adds unnecessary complexity and confusion, leaving the possibility for error and confusion, which might result in major injury or worse for users, and subjects manufacturers to greater costs and issues with product liability. combination of towers violates the fundamental principles of the EN 1004 standard.

5. Loss of the Guarantee:
If such non-Youngman tower components have been used, the tower structure is no longer certified to fulfill EN 1004-1:2020 specifications, which terminates the guarantee in most situations.
Youngman India, as a manufacturer of these mobile access towers, cannot allow the mixing of tower components from multiple manufacturers, and we are educating our clients about this to assist in guaranteeing that safety and compliance stay at the core of our business.

Who was Robert Amory Jr., the Moon Network Lawyer that was also the Deputy Director of the CIA?
Tumblr media
▲ Pictured: An obituary of Robert Amory Jr. that stresses his role as a “lawyer” rather than his many years in the CIA, even as its Deputy Director
The Moon network hired Robert Amory in the 70s through Bo Hi Pak, who had been the official CIA-KCIA liaison, serving bilateral relations and intelligence activities for over a decade. Amory at the time had already served as the CIA Deputy Directory. He worked for China Lobby Thomas Corcoran’s law firm.
From a 1975 FBI document regarding Moon:
Tumblr media
In 1971, Radio of Free Asia came under investigation by several Government agencies, including the Justice Department, for alleged violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. In question was the radio station's status as a foreign private foundation when the South Korean Government consistently gave it free air time on its national network. Colonel Pak acquired the legal services of former CIA Deputy Director of Intelligence Robert Amory, Jr., then employed by the Washington law firm of Thomas Corcoran, himself a top legal counsel to the CIA. The investigation was subsequently dropped.
So who was Robert Amory?
From the April 21, 1989 obituary in the New York Times: Robert Amory Jr., 74, Ex-Official Of C.I.A. and U.S. Budget Bureau:
Robert Amory Jr., Deputy Director of Central Intelligence from 1952 to 1962 and later head of the international division of the Bureau of the Budget, died of colon cancer Wednesday at the Georgetown University Hospital in Washington. He was 74 years old and lived in Washington.
Mr. Amory practiced law with the firm of Cahill, Gordon in New York before World War II and, after his Government service, with the Washington firm of Corcoran, Foley, Youngman & Rowe.
He entered the Army in 1941 as a private and emerged six years later as a colonel. He commanded an amphibious regiment in the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action as well as the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit.
A native of Boston, Mr. Amory was a graduate of Milton Academy and of Harvard College, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and the Harvard Law School. He was a professor at the law school from 1946 to 1952, developing its first course in accounting.
At the Central Intelligence Agency, Mr. Amory was a member of the National Security Council Planning Board. In 1961 he was openly critical of the Bay of Pigs operation in Cuba, which he had not been consulted about despite his status as an official of the C.I.A. and the National Security Council.
He left the C.I.A. in 1962 and joined the budget bureau, where he remained until 1965. In 1973 he became secretary and general counsel of the National Gallery of Art, a post he held until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Harvard University Board of Overseers from 1963 to 1969.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Armstrong; two sons, Robert 3d, of Boston, and Daniel, of Portland, Me.; his brother, Cleveland, the author; a sister, Leonore Sawyers of Claremont, Calif., and three grandsons.
Excerpts from Drugs, Oil, and War: The United States in Afghanistan, Colombia, and Indochina by Peter Dale Scott
Robert Amory Jr. (son of a New York manufacturer who was a codirector of at least three Boston firms with directors of United Fruit) came to the CIA as deputy director for intelligence in 1952.
Amory's predecessor at the CIA was Loftus Becker, who resigned in 1953 to become a partner of a law firm, Cahill, Gordon, Reindel & Ohl. This firm remains focused on capital markets, banking & finance, especially issues of litigation.
When Amory “left” the CIA to practice law, he joined Tom’s Corcoran’s practice, which was said to be:
. . . on a functional or operating level, diverse intelligence operations such as in Guatemala and Laos, and diverse overseas economic interests such as in bananas, insurance, and oil, are revealed to be part of one continuous story. At least through 1968 Corcoran’s law partners Ernest Cuneo (ex-OSS), Robert Amory (ex-CIA), and James Rowe (one of Lyndon Johnson’s earliest advisers along with Corcoran himself) continued to keep closely in touch with Asian developments through both the CIA and the White House. Furthermore, the apparently diverse economic interests who chose to be represented by Corcoran’s firm (like United Fruit, CAT, and C. V. Starr) turn out, on closer examination, to be less differentiated than the usual pluralistic models of American society would have us think.
Many books could be written about Corcoran with publicly known information. He was deeply connected to anti-communist counterinsurgency following WWII, even after his formal career with the CIA.
In 1950, Corcoran and Paul Helliwell, a lawyer and CIA expert on weapon, money, and drug trafficking, persuaded the CIA to purchase half-ownership of Civil Air Transport (which was later renamed Air America). Helliwell was known for funding anti-Castro activities through "drug banks" and using Southern Air Transport for the sake of anti-Castro operations. These men played a major role in the CIA transporting heroine throughout Asia and the U.S.
Corcoran founded his law firm in 1962, though continuing to aid counterinsurgency efforts. Corcoran was in a relationship with Anna Chennault, a CIA operative at the heart of the China Lobby controversies.
More on Art, Corcoran, Amory, and the CIA
Corcoran was a longtime United Fruit lobbyist himself. Amory and Corcoran’s bonds through intelligence, law, and imperialist corporate interests led them on a lifetime partnership, as well as their love for art.
Robert Amory worked at the National Gallery of Art after his time in the CIA. He was the secretary and general counsel of the National Gallery of Art from 1973-1980.
His late career boss at the law firm, Thomas Corcoran, himself owned Corcoran Gallery of Art, known for its mission of "the encouragement of American genius,” holding historical paintings, though with some promotion of abstract art (more below about this on the Melzac Art Collection).
Robert Amory Jr. once owned a portrait of his ancestor Thomas Amory II, painted by John Singleton Copley, who he also descends from, which was later sold to Corcoran in the late 80s.
From the CIA - About the Melzac Art Collection
Every day, Agency employees walk past several abstract paintings that hang throughout the Headquarters buildings. These 29 paintings do not just break up the acres of wall space. They represent an elemental approach to art, a swashbuckling donor, and a connection to the architecture of the OHB.
The way the eye perceives color and pattern were the subjects of Norman Bluhm, Gene Davis, Howard Mehring, Kenneth Noland, Thomas Downing, Alma Thomas, and the other artists of the Washington Color School. Their patron — and the donor of this collection to the Agency, the late Vincent Melzac — was a larger-than-life figure.
Melzac’s first loan of art to the CIA came in 1968, when eight large paintings by Norman Bluhm, Gene Davis, Thomas Downing, and Jack Bush were selected by officials of the Corcoran Gallery to fit the large open spaces of OHB. A sculpture by Giorgio Spaventa was also loaned at that time; it now resides in the Vatican. Melzac also donated the bust of George Bush by sculptor Marc Mellon which is near the OHB lobby. Melzac was awarded the Agency Seal Medallion by DCI Casey in 1982 for his generous support to the CIA.
And the collector mentioned who loaned all of this art to the CIA, Vincent Melzac, was once the Corcoran Gallery chief.
It is well known that the CIA heavily invested in influencing art and culture following WWII, heavily pushing pushing abstract expressionism. (More info on this here and here and here and here.) This was a part of a larger cultural counterinsurgency strategy that evolved over time. Later on, they heavily pushed post-structuralist, post-modernist philosophers in order to depoliticize a generation on the verge of revolution, such as Foucault, who himself was a former Marxist excited by the possibilities of neoliberalism. Some have hypothesized that towards the end of the 60s, into the 70s, the CIA began pushing more nostalgic, historical art, over abstract art.
Carey Dunne in Hyperallergic wrote in A Visit to the CIA’s “Secret” Abstract Art Collection:
The CIA promoted Abstract Expressionism under a “long leash” policy, operating at two or three degrees of separation from the artists themselves. This prevented any lefty, communist-sympathizing artists from objecting to their work being used as pro-US propaganda. It would seem that Melzac — a flamboyant wheeler-dealer with an ascot, a pipe, a Thunderbird, and “pretty girl on his arm,” as Newmann put it — was one of the main connections between the DC art and political worlds, unbeknownst to the artists. According to Newmann, Melzac’s connection to the agency was Carlton Swift, a CIA official and a trustee at the Corcoran Gallery while Melzac was CEO. “Melzac liked Swift and Swift was helpful to Melzac’s agenda at the Corcoran,” Newmann said. When asked for details on Melzac’s connections to various CIA officials, though, the Public Affairs office said only that: “Our records indicate Carlton Swift did not have a role in selecting or purchasing these paintings.”
Boone Cutler once told writer and artist Michael Newberry that the motivate for this psychogical operation was "Manageability…piece by piece.” Newberry went on,
"It is reasonable to conclude that the CIA wasn’t interested in winning a cultural cold war with Russia; rather its goal and aim was to make Americans malleable. They didn’t have to totally destroy one’s values of art. It would be enough to get Americans to shake their heads at the absurdities of contemporary art, question the validity of their art knowledge, conclude that art is subjective, and it is not a crucial value. Succeeding in that, the CIA could then gloat they had undermined another flourishing soul, and there would be one less witness to their pathetic machinations."
It could also be noted that Robert Amory’s brother was Cleveland Amory. Clever was a writer, reporter, and animal rights activist. Though he did not go down the road of [open] professional intelligence work like his brother, he did go down the route of many who would, receiving an education at Milton Academy and Harvard, and having served in military intelligence during the war. Following the war, his career and fame began to pick up. It was largely suspected that he also remained connected to intelligence work. His animal rights activism became popular among progressive celebrities, who he had intentionally fostered relationships with. This form of activism for many bourgeois “progressives” trumped anti-war, pro-peace, pro-people reforms and causes, including revolutionary organizations and solidarity movements, that were popular among students and working people of the time.
There's a lot of details in here that could be expounded upon, but the connections between the CIA-funded Congress for Cultural Freedom, and the CIA’s psychological warfare and broad counterinsurgency strategy, and the UC's KCIA-funded Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation (KCFF), headed by CIA-KCIA liaison Bo Hi Pak, become clearer when the figures between these organizations are identified. Robert Amory is just one of these people.

Do you know dongwokuteng, the first joint venture heavy truck in China?
Do you know dongwokuteng, the first joint venture heavy truck in China?
It has been 66 years since the development of commercial vehicles in our country. In the long history of the development of China's truck industry, some models have become classics, and some howo brands have finally disappeared from people's vision because of various factors.
Some time ago, Xiaobian introduced several representative "disappeared" Sino foreign cooperative trucks to you, including sinotruk Hino, youngman and JAC Hyundai. Please stamp the original text: "how many do you know about these disappearing" Sino foreign cooperation "trucks?". The history of these trucks made many card users recall the "old days" and triggered discussions among many card users.
Just a few days ago, Xiaobian met two "now very rare models" in a service area when he was out shooting. To tell the truth, Xiaobian thought it was two models of niche brands at first, but after searching the data, he found that the two trucks parked in the service area were Kuteng models from Dongwo UD brand, which were officially launched in 2013.
Many young card users may be unfamiliar with Dongwo brand. Today, let's review the history and models of Dongwo brand!
According to the data, Dongwo can be traced back to Nissan Diesel in 1935. In May1996, Dongfeng Motor Corporation and Japan Nissan Diesel Automobile Industry Co., Ltd. officially established Dongfeng Nissan Diesel Automobile Co., Ltd. in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.
It is worth mentioning that Dongfeng Nissan Diesel Automobile Co., Ltd. is the first joint venture approved by the state to produce heavy trucks and large luxury bus chassis. Dongfeng Automobile Co., Ltd. holds 50% of the shares through its subordinate Dongfeng Automobile Group Co., Ltd. and Nissan Diesel Automobile Industry Co., Ltd.
In 2007, Volvo Group, the world's second largest manufacturer of heavy trucks and large buses, wholly purchased Nissan Diesel. Volvo Group carried out heavy truck business in China through Dongfeng Nissan Diesel Automobile Co., Ltd., which was later often referred to as Dongwo, equivalent to 50% shares of Volvo and Dongfeng respectively.
According to the official news at that time, since joining the Volvo family, UD truck has become an important part of the global strategic layout of Volvo truck. Under the new mission of developing a cost-effective heavy truck platform to meet the needs of rapidly developing emerging markets. Quester is also launched in this context.
It is understood that UD Kuteng truck will be produced by Thailand, China and India. Its target market is mainly for developing countries such as the Asia Pacific region and Latin America. At the end of 2013, the new product UD Kuteng of Dongwo (Hangzhou) truck company was officially listed in Hangzhou.
According to the official news released at that time, UD Kuteng is a heavy truck series model of Dongwo (Hangzhou) truck company, that is, the former Dongfeng Nissan Diesel factory. At the same time, UD Kuteng is also the first heavy truck product after the cooperation between Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd. and Volvo Group. The manufacturing standard of Dongwo UD Kuteng will be in line with that of European heavy trucks.
At that time, UD Kuteng was a medium and high-end heavy truck specially customized for the Chinese market by the strong cooperation of Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd. and Volvo Group. From development to final production, the products borrowed the global resources of Volvo Group, including design, procurement, manufacturing and many other links.
It is understood that, as a replacement model of UD Quon (Dongfeng Nissan chaiyoudishi), UD Kuteng is positioned between domestic trucks and imported European brands in the domestic market, with a sales range of 400000-500000.
According to Xiaobian's chat with the owner, the vehicle's engine is a UD gh1b in-line 6-cylinder engine from Volvo Group, with a displacement of 11 liters. There are three horsepower segments, 371 horsepower, 390 horsepower and 420 horsepower. The maximum torque of the three engines are 1700 nm, 1800 nm and 2000 nm respectively.
The production of this engine was completed in Japan, and Volvo's technology was also borrowed. For example, its fuel system adopts pump nozzle structure, and the maximum injection pressure reaches 2000bar; In addition, it is equipped with EEB engine braking technology, which includes EPG (exhaust braking) and VCB (valve controlled braking). The maximum braking power can reach 92% of the maximum engine power, which can effectively reduce the number of service braking and prolong the service life of the braking system.
The gear box is a product of domestic mature brand fast. According to different models, it can be equipped with 9-gear and 12 gear transmission to meet the needs of different working conditions. It is understood that the transmission cooling device on UD Kuteng adopts the circulating water cooling technology to effectively improve the lubrication conditions, prolong the service life and meet the needs of long-distance and high load operation of vehicles.
The rear axle has two types: single-stage reduction axle and wheel side reduction axle, which can be selected according to different working conditions. It is also worth mentioning that the rear axle housing is produced domestically, but the core parts are imported from Japan. Moreover, UD Kuteng is also equipped with Volvo's unique t-ride rear suspension structure technology to improve the adaptability and reliability of the vehicle.
UD Kuteng has a very rich product series, including 4x2, 6x2, 6x4 and 8x4 chassis and tractors. Kuteng can provide high top double sleeper and flat top single sleeper cabs according to different working conditions. According to different industry needs, it can be used in long-distance logistics distribution, dangerous goods transportation, construction engineering and special vehicles.
Moreover, UD Kuteng is also equipped with a quite advanced fuel saving guidance system. The system will give the recommended operation of the system on the instrument panel according to various signals of the body, such as increasing the engine speed, accelerator pedal, shift timing and other operation tips, so as to make the engine operate in the best state.
Although UD Kuteng has a good appearance design and solid chassis components, coupled with the imported power system and the mainstream fast gearbox of domestic cars, it can be said that the inborn conditions of this car are very excellent. However, due to the high price of 400000-500000 yuan, limited space, imperfect after-sales service and spare parts and other factors, Kuteng's domestic market performance is indeed unsatisfactory.
In 2016, Dongfeng Corporation (Hong Kong) International Co., Ltd. officially purchased 50% of the shares of Volvo holding Dongwo, and the Dongwo brand was all controlled by Dongfeng; In june2017, Dongwo officially changed its name to "Dongfeng nengdi (Hangzhou) Automobile Co., Ltd." and gave up the road vehicle business to manufacture special vehicles. The "Dongwo era" officially came to an end.
● postscript
Although Dongwo UD Kuteng has gradually disappeared in the domestic commercial vehicle market, it is not difficult to see from the aftertaste that with the endorsement of mature and huge foreign-funded enterprises, the joint venture brand has its advantages in terms of capital and technology. How to better create a heavy truck suitable for the Chinese market, we need to go down to the card friends and dig out the real user needs, so as to stand firm in today's commercial vehicle market, Achieve brand take-off

I am afraid to ask but goodness Larc what did you do that is THAT bad????
What are you talking about?? Is it not all apparant now???
I selfishly prevent my son from taking on his destiny, just because I wanted to have a life with my family, yet knowing it might cost hundreds of others. Then, I come to the insensitive conclusion that I should just come clean and let myself be imprisoned or hanged, just to get the guilt out of me. My decisions then force my son to become a traitor which ruins all of his relationships and friendships.
I serve a coward king, and a corrupt father for my entire life, without every asking questions or having the guts to pause to hesitate. I fight monsters, and criminals, and traitors! All the like... And of course, I’m not a murderer or killer because it’s in the name of something good, and I would never gain the strength to question exactly what that “good” was.
I fail my father, and my husband, and my kids, and my brother...My poor brother...He did nothing but care for me when we were growing up, my only friend. And how did I repay him? I stayed silent and stayed under my father, not so much as sending him a letter as he rotted on the streets. And I only ever came to him when I was desperate and in need, not decades later. When I needed help taking care of my children, when I needed to ease my own guilt and regret...And...And...He never even...He...
...
...One of my biggest regrets, though many, is letting you idolize me, Link. Letting you think I was a grand hero, letting you believe in that illusion. It’s because a part of me wanted that too, for you to love me and never find faults. And you wanted to follow in my footsteps and surpass me, and despite all the reasons I shouldn’t have let you take that road, there was this voice in my head that said, “Yes. My son will surpass me. My son will be better than me. I’ll let myself be redeemed in his unwavering smile.” And so I let you. Another mistake...
...
So what happened? Well, you spent half your life with a stern frown, with a polished, manufactured blade, serving the same assholes as I. And of course I was so, so proud when you had your moments, your true moments to shine. But mostly I was just sad that I had ruined someone again.
...
...
...
...Yet here you are, despite it all, still smiling once again and calling me a hero. Still proud of your captain father...Why? I will never understand you, son. I’ll never be like you, and it’s for the best, in my opinion. You’ve grown into a wonderful youngman despite having me in your life, so you truly must be the strongest, most honorable knight of all. And as selfish as it is to say it, I’m proud of that. I know you’ve always worked to be like me, to make me and our family happy, son, but you already did it a long time ago, when you first came into this world.
...
So please. Don’t let yourself get held back by me, anymore. I’m a terrible person, far more than you could dream, I’ve just had practice at hiding it. You don’t need to keep lying to yourself about it because I’m your...father.

St. Louis comedian Davey ‘Nose’ Bold is only known today for his three comedy LPs which litter the thrift stores of Missouri and most provinces of Canada. While his records gained little traction in the States, his Canadian distributor had high expectations. Birchmount Records over-manufactured his three albums by the thousands. They sold very few and the deadstock just ended up in the remainder bins and flea markets. The records are still very common in junk shops and thrift stores to this day.
Davey Bold ran his own St. Louis venue from 1958 through 1963. It was called the Celebrity Club and he acted as the comic-emcee. He brought several comedians into town to play the room, among them Henny Youngman, Rummy Bishop, and Jerry Lester.
He went back out on the road after the demise of his club and he was a regular at the Holiday Inn by the airport in several different cities.
Bold died of a sudden heart attack in 1978 and was never mentioned again.

Women Entrepreneurs Prove Its Not Just A Mans World
Women Entrepreneurs Prove Its Not Just A Mans World
I had the honor of speaking this week at a women’s business association luncheon on the topic of entrepreneurship. When I mentioned to my wife the day before that I was speaking to group of women entrepreneurs she asked, “Why on earth would they ask you to speak?”
In her defense, my dear wife has no idea what I do for a living. She’s never read a single one of the several hundred columns I’ve written. She’s never attended a function where I’m speaking or sat in the audience at any of my seminars.
She just knows that we live a very comfortable lifestyle and believes me when I tell her our money doesn’t come from the drug trade.
Beyond that, she’s incredibly happy in her ignorance of her husband’s skills.
When I feigned hurt feelings she waved a hand at me and said, “My point is, what in the world can a man tell a roomful of women that they don’t already know?”
Henny Youngman, Ralph Cramden, Rodney Dangerfield, Tim Knox. At least I’m in good company.
But she had a point. What the heck did I know about women in business? So as not to look like a total idiot in front of this group of what I now call “womentrepreneurs” I decided to do a little research on the topic.
Here’s what I discovered: while some still believe it’s a man’s world, when it comes to business, women are catching up fast.
According to the Center For Women’s Business Research there are over 10 million women-owned businesses in the US, employing 18 million people and generating $2.32 trillion in sales.
Women start businesses at two times the rate of men and women-owned businesses account for 28 percent of all businesses in the United States and represent about 775,000 new startups per year and account for 55% of new startups.
One thing that I found particularly interesting was that the top growth industries for women-owned businesses in recent years were construction, wholesale trade, transportation/communications, agribusiness and manufacturing, industries traditionally dominated by men.
In the past 25 years the number of women-owned firms in the US has doubled, employment has increased four-fold and their revenues have risen five-fold.
Here is the question I sought particularly to answer: Do women approach business differently than men? I’ve been compared to a bull in a china shop when it comes to business. Would a female counterpart approach things differently? More gracefully, perhaps? As my lovely bride would say, “Duh.”
In her book, How to Run Your Business Like a Girl, Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin explored common female traits and how women entrepreneurs – and perhaps men, as well – can use those traits to their entrepreneurial advantage.
Baskin reported that women tend to use three unique strengths more than their male counterparts: trusting their intuition, focusing on relationships, and putting more emphasis on keeping their life in balance.
Trust Your Gut
Women are much more likely to make a decision based on a gut feeling. Women may gather the facts and figures necessary to back up that feeling, but they generally know what they want to do based on intuition.
Build Strong Relationships
Men play the game of business like a sport. They are out to win and dominate. “Women,” Baskin says, “are much more interested in establishing a connection.”
Find A Balance Between Work and Life.
A number of women interviewed for this book cited on quality of life as their reason for starting a business, alluding to their desire to find a way to juggle family and work. “If having more time for your family is important to you, find a way to work that into your day. It’s not so much how much work you do, but being able to decide when you’ll do it.”
Baskin offers one more piece of advice to women in the early stages of their business:
You Don’t Have To Know Everything.
My wife would argue this point because she really does know everything, but Baskin says when it comes to business, thinking you know everything is not the key to success.
“It’s amazing how many women say they didn’t know anything when they started their business,” Baskin said. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help – you don’t have to be perfect at everything.”
Solid business advice: for guys and gals.
Here’s to your success!

How To Inspect Your Ladder Before You Use It
Tumblr media
Have you ever climbed a ladder only to realize it wasn't as sturdy as you thought? We've all been there, but fear not! We've all heard the advice: inspect your ladder before use. But let's be honest, how often do we really know what that means? We never delve deep into understanding what and how we should inspect it in the right way before giving it a go.
In this article, we're going to deep dive into the important steps you need to take before using your ladder. Whether you're using it for home repairs or in professional settings, such as industrial environments, checking your ladder before use is non-negotiable. But ensuring the correct method of inspection is far more critical than anything else. Let's explore together and ensure your climb is as safe as can be!
Contents:
Introduction: How right inspection can minimize the risk of accidents
A pre-use ladder check should be carried out
Essential Inspection Points
Introduction

Before you begin any task involving a ladder, make sure you have the manufacturer's user instructions handy for reference. These instructions are essential if you need guidance on how to use the ladder correctly.
Next, do a quick "pre-use" check to ensure the ladder is safe to use. Look for any obvious visual defects like cracks, bends, or missing parts. Pay attention to the rungs, rails, and locking mechanisms for signs of damage.
Also, check for dirt, debris, or anything that could cause slipping. It's important to keep the ladder clean and free from obstructions.
By following these steps, you can minimize the risk of accidents and create a safer working environment. Always prioritize safety when using ladders.
Article: Your Guide to Ladder Safety: Dos and Don'ts You Should Know
A Pre-use Ladder Check Should Be Carried Out:
• By the user; It's important that the user takes the initiative to conduct the pre-use check. After all, they're the ones who will be relying on the ladder for support and safety during their work tasks.
• At the beginning of the working day; Performing the check at the beginning of the working day sets a proactive tone for safety. It ensures that any issues or concerns with the ladder are addressed before it's put into use, reducing the risk of accidents or injuries later on.
Article: How to Prevent Falls From Ladders
• After something has changed, eg a ladder has been dropped or moved from a dirty area: Anytime something changes in the environment surrounding the ladder, a reevaluation is necessary. Whether the ladder has been dropped, moved from one area to another, or exposed to different conditions, it's essential to inspect it for any potential damage or hazards.
For example, if the ladder has been moved from a dirty area to a clean one, checking the condition of the feet becomes particularly important as they may have picked up debris or become compromised in some way during the transfer. By adhering to these points and making pre-use ladder checks a standard practice, users can significantly enhance workplace safety and minimize the risk of accidents or injuries while working at height.

Tumblr media
Essential Inspection Points:
In your ladder inspection checklist, it's crucial to pay close attention to several key areas. Here's a breakdown of what you should be looking for:
1. Stiles: Check that the ladder's side rails, known as stiles, are straight and free from any bends or damage. Bent or damaged stiles could lead to the ladder buckling or collapsing under your weight.
2. Feet: Inspect the ladder's feet to ensure they are present, not worn, and undamaged. If the feet are missing or in poor condition, the ladder may slip, leading to accidents. Pay particular attention when transitioning from soft or dirty ground to a smooth, solid surface to ensure proper footing.
3. Rungs: Examine each rung of the ladder for signs of bending, wear, or damage. Bent, worn, missing, or loose rungs can compromise the ladder's integrity, increasing the risk of failure.
Article: Top Guidelines for Safely Using an Extension Ladder
4. Locking Mechanism: Test the locking mechanism to verify its functionality. Look for any signs of bent, worn, or damaged components or fixings. A faulty locking mechanism could result in the ladder collapsing, so ensure all locking bars are fully engaged before use.
5. Stepladder Platform: If you're using a stepladder, carefully inspect the platform for any signs of splitting or buckling. A compromised platform could make the ladder unstable or prone to collapse.
Article: Why FRP Ladder is Better Than Aluminium Ladder?
6. Steps or Treads on Stepladders: Check the steps or treads on Stepladders for contamination that could make them slippery. Additionally, ensure that the fixings securing the steps are tight to prevent collapse.
Remember, if you identify any of these defects during your inspection, do not use the ladder and promptly inform your employer. Prioritizing safety during ladder checks is essential for preventing accidents and injuries.

Conclusion
In a nutshell, guaranteeing the safety of ladder use starts with a detailed inspection. Users can significantly lower the risk of accidents and injuries by identifying the key things to consider before usage. From testing for structural integrity to analyzing stability, each stage in the pre-use ladder inspection is critical to maintaining safety requirements.
Article: 5 Points to Consider Before Buying Telescopic Ladders
Neglecting these inspection points might lead to unsafe conditions with serious repercussions. As a result, users must include this crucial activity in their daily routine before using a ladder. Finally, prioritizing ladder inspection not only protects individuals but also builds a culture of safety in the workplace and beyond. Remember, a few minutes of review can save a lifetime of regret.

My Pictures for Schools
Tumblr media
Chloe Cheese - Tea and Cake (In My Collection)
This is a post about the Cambridgeshire County Council Pictures For Schools Collection. It was a brave project founded in 1947, in part as a reaction to the brutalities of the war, but also to brighten up classrooms and schools with modern works of art and improve the minds of young children.
I am apt to using the word utopian a lot, but personally I believe projects like these were important in rebuilding Britain after the war. Not just bringing art into the home, but taking it to the public spaces; from the windows in Coventry Cathedral to the Festival of Britain, there was a manufacturing ‘brave new world’ of Britain and they used the artists as part of the team, maybe from champions of design like Robin Darwin at the Royal College of Art and exhibitions like Britain Can Make It in 1946.
The driving force behind the Pictures for Schools project was painter and educator Nan Youngman, art adviser to Cambridgeshire’s Director of Education, Henry Morris. Youngman was a student of painting at the Slade from 1924-1927, winning a prize at the Slade in 1926. She painted still, but focused on education for most of her life.
The ideas motivating Pictures for Schools were very much of their time. During and after the Second World War, as the rebuilding of Britain was debated in both the public and political spheres, educators called for art education to be given a central position in the new school system. This received support from the Ministry of Education, as part of a project to promote British culture, improve the public’s standards of taste and create a new generation of citizens and educated consumers who were capable of exercising judgement in aesthetic matters and making informed choices and purchases.
The Pictures for Schools project came out of and alongside many other famous ‘utopian’ projects like the Contemporary Lithographs (1937-38), AIA Everyman’s Prints (1940) and the School Prints series of lithographs where major artists would be paid to design a lithograph that would be printed in thousands and then sold to schools cheaply. Youngman was involved in the Everyman’s Prints series and it may have helped inspire the running of Pictures for Schools.
In the founding of the Pictures for Schools project, one of Youngman’s big successes was after she accompanied Morris to London in 1945 to buy a painting by L.S.Lowry from the Lefevre Gallery for 30gns for the Cambridge Schools Art Collection as part of Pictures for Schools. At the start of a recession in 2009 the Cambridge County Council sold it for £541,250 at Christie’s. The commission on that sale would have been around £125k.
Tumblr media
 L. S. Lowry - A Market Place, Berwick-upon-Tweed, 1935
The rest of the works were due to go up for sale with Christie’s too, some of the works I own still have catalogue assignment stickers from the auction house on the back, but with the economic climate the Cambridge Council pulled the collection from auction and in 2017 they would come up again for sale with another auction house.
Although Nan Youngman was the organiser and originator of Pictures for Schools, she had the support of long-running exhibition secretaries, who themselves had interesting backgrounds and careers.
Slade-trained painter and writer Sylvia Pollak was the first Organising Secretary. She had, like Youngman and many of their circle, links with the Artists’ International Association and the Women’s International Art Club.
She was succeeded by art historian, writer and lecturer Alison Kelly, who had a particular interest in furniture and pottery, from 1950-1957, when she resigned to spend more time lecturing... During the war, Kelly had been flown around the country working on camouflage schemes for possible bombing targets such as factories.
Katharine Baker, who had been treasurer for the Society for Education through Art, took over from 1958-1967. She had previously worked for the British Institute for Adult Education, which during the war organised good design exhibitions, put pictures in air raid shelters, armed services establishments and British Restaurants, and sent exhibitions to outlying districts. She received a New Year’s day MBE in 1948 for her work on the ‘Art for the People’ travelling exhibitions.
Finally, Joan Bartlett was Organising Secretary from 1967 until after the exhibitions’ close in 1969, when the exhibitions were held at the Royal Academy’s Diploma Galleries.
Tumblr media
Stephen Bone - Yachts Racing at Loosdrecht, (In My Collection)
The Stephen Bone painting above was bought direct from the artist himself as on the back are various notes and bills on Bone’s headed paper.
Youngman donated some of her paintings and linocuts to the collection, other artists in the collection are like a who’s who of British Art. Gertrude Hermes, Richard Bawden, John Piper, Anthony Day, Patrick Hughes, Enid Marx, Michael Rothenstein, Malvina Cheek, Robert Tavener, Julia Ball, Peter Nuttall, Richard Beer, George Chapman, Alistair Grant, Edwin La Dell, Rosemary Ellis, Tirzah Garwood and Evelyn Dunbar are but a few.
Tumblr media
Nick Lyons - Between You and Me, 1977 (In My Collection)
As the Pictures for Schools scheme ended in the 1960s, in Cambridge the project continued under the name ‘Original Works for Children in Cambridgeshire’.
Tumblr media
Malvina Cheek - Cornstooks at Furlongs, 1962 (In My Collection)
The Malvina Cheek drawing above came with some provenance.
I was staying at Furlongs when I drew the Corn Stooks . It was then a magical place, a shepherds cottage set in the shadow of the Downs. A gap in the wall leads up to the Downs. There was no electricity, no gas, only oil lamps and wood fires; a telephone the only concession to modern life.
In the fields alongside the cottage were pyramids of corn. The exciting shapes of the corn stooks attracted me. There was only time to draw, my daughter was very young, so I made studies hoping to develop them later. I also drew Dick Freeman, the farmer from whom Peggy leased her part of the cottage; he used an adjacent room where he rested after tending his sheep. There was always a pleasant speaking voice, a fine hooked nose and large hands like those in a Permeke drawing. Later I would use both the drawings of corn stooks and of Dick the farmer, I was commissioned to illustrate Gulliver’s Travels
Cheek also worked as part of the Recording Britain project.
Tumblr media
Bernard Cheese - The Lemon Seller (In My Collection)
Walter Hoyle the Great Bardfield artist took over the scheme in the 1970s. Hoyle donated a few pictures and convinced other artists to donate works to the project too. Hoyle came to be involved as he was working at the Cambridge School of Art, now part of the Anglia Ruskin University. He would teach printmaking in the St Barnabas Press, a premises that the art school rented and he would encourage his pupils to donate a print to the collection. It may also explain how a fellow Bardfield artist, Bernard Cheese gets into the collection. Hoyle retired from teaching in 1985, moving from Cambridge to Hastings and Dieppe.
Tumblr media
Warwick Hutton - Adam and Eve, 1986 (In My Collection)
We know the Original Works for Children in Cambridgeshire continued until 1985 when the project was run by the council and in the mid 1990s, the Council wound down the project citing the expenses of transporting the art around, hanging and administration costs and the works were stored in a shed outside Huntington Library and in a community centre in Papworth for the next 15 years.
The works by Walter Hoyle and Warwick Hutton in the collection were given with expenses for framing to the artists. Warwick Hutton’s painting of ‘Adam and Eve’ followed with a book he published in 1987 under the same name by Hutton with Atheneum Books.
Tumblr media
Poul Webb - Petersfield (In My Collection)
Many of the works that Hoyle encouraged his students to make were prints, Poul Webb remembered making the print above in various colourways to me when I contacted him and he now works mostly as a painter with a totally different style. The picture below by Glyn Thomas is unlike his style now too, he works in drawings and etchings but Hoyle must have been an interesting man to work under as many of the artworks have a bit of Rothenstein or Bawden in them, I guess due to the Bardfield connections.
Tumblr media
Glyn Thomas - Corn Exchange, Cambridge, 1965 (In My Collection)
It wasn’t just Bernard Cheese and Walter Hoyle that had works in the collection from Great Bardfield. Tizah Garwood had a painting in the collection of two donkeys. Chloe Cheese also had two prints in the collection.
Tumblr media
Tirzah Garwood - Nathaniel and Patsy
Tumblr media
Chloe Cheese - Figs and Coffee, 1972 (In My Collection)
Tumblr media
Norma Jameson - Black Cockerel (In My Collection)
Tumblr media
Marion Crawford - Agriculture (In My Collection)

‘Covid-19 the last nail in the coffin, this is the gloomiest time ever,’ say MSMEs
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/covid-19-the-last-nail-in-the-coffin-this-is-the-gloomiest-time-ever-say-msmes-2/
‘Covid-19 the last nail in the coffin, this is the gloomiest time ever,’ say MSMEs
Tumblr media
Jayanth Mutha, a Bengaluru-based second generation entrepreneur running a business of manufacturing agri-electrical products, is in a contemplative mode these days.
The whys and hows of joining his family business constantly nudge him at a time when small businesses are especially struggling to survive in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak. His company, Himlite Products, is his family business of agri-electricals for the farmers and the farming community.
Mutha has reasons aplenty to second guess his choice of profession.
Locked units, dead stock, no sales, demanding vendors, uncollected payments and mounting expenses – Covid-19 has been the last nail in the coffin for a host of MSMEs, post demonetisation and GST. Not surprising then, Mutha feels highly disillusioned at this point. “MSMEs are India’s second favourite poster boy sectors (after agriculture) and are always credited for the highest employment, great contributions and what not. But, for all the hype, this has not translated to anything concrete on the ground,” he says, evidently disgruntled with the state of affairs.
As per estimates, India is home to 69 million MSMEs with micro enterprises accounting for the majority presence in the country. The virus pandemic has clearly rattled the sector that operates on limited cash resources and huge fixed costs, which make their ability to withstand such shocks extremely difficult. Across the various domains of auto, apparel, F&B, agriculture and the like – the story remains uncannily the same for such enterprises.
Work From Home – what’s that? While a plethora of industries shifted their work practices to ‘Work from Home’ during the 21 day lockdown, it has not been as simple for MSMEs for whom such a concept stands redundant and unheard of. Mutha’s typical 14-15 hour work hour day in the factory has now dropped to just one hour from home where he calls vendors and finishes off the pending paperwork.
Amit Kothari, Joint MD at Ludhiana-based Kay Jay Forgings, an auto component firm, says that since all of their processes have to be done on machines in the plants, there is virtually no work that is happening at present. “There are around 2300 people working with us, spread out in the three plants at Ludhiana and Hosur. We are paying salaries irrespective of the situation playing out right now with no sales, work or payments coming in from customers. This is the worst nightmare that the auto industry can go through right now,” he says.
The crisis has hit the auto industry hard. Dwindling sale numbers, production at a standstill and lack of supply coming in have altogether accelerated the brakes on any momentum in the sector. Moreover, the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the virus is said to have originated, is a major manufacturing base of auto components and India’s import dependence on China for key parts only implies that the supply chain will majorly be affected going forward.
Kothari doesn’t mince his words when he says that a lot of challenges are in store ahead. “The impact will go on for two quarters. It is not as if things will be completely normal when the lockdown is lifted. No one knows anything about the future,” he adds.

In the light of the ongoing challenges, industry body Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU) has requested the Government to pay 10% lumpsum compensation to the industry based on turnover as per the GST return. “Even last year was a bad year for the auto sector. Everyone was banking on this year and invested thinking that things will look up. But now this crisis happened. The government should give some relief from the current situation. The industry is very depressed,” Upkar Singh Ahuja, President, CICU says.
Worse situation than any other Textile players too have seen the sudden shift in demand as the focus quickly moved to essentials, an area where textile items did not quite fit in. Nitesh Jagota, Joint MD of Youngman Woollen Mills, which manufactures and supplies a variety of blankets, talks about the various fixed charges that continue for their industry and is burdening them at this time. “We have about 1500 people employed in our three manufacturing units. We have paid advances, salaries and electricity charges. The industry would like to see that at least the minimum charges should be set off for now. We can survive this way for the next 1.5 months or so. However, after that, some booster from the government will be needed for us to stay afloat,” he asserts.
With all the time at hand, Jagota busies himself these days with reading biopics to keep the positivity and inspirational quotient alive. Currently, he is engrossed in reading about the life of Steve Jobs. He recalls the previous instances of demonetisation, GST and recession when the economy was also going through a slump, but is convinced that this is the gloomiest time that has ever been seen.
“Yes, there was panic during demonetisation and GST as well. But atleast things were moving at some pace. We could manage something by talking to suppliers and things were getting restored in some way. Here, we are absolutely stuck and confined to our homes. How can you do any work from home when it is all manufacturing centric?” he questions.
Better preparedness for eventualities Needless to say, it is a tough time for the several small businesses that run on stringent budgets and resources. However, it has also been a learning lesson for many of them to deal better with such unforeseen shocks that may come their way. The MSMEs that ET Digital reached out to say that though their capacity to absorb such economic upheavals will still be limited, some aspects can be thought of for better preparedness in the future.
Mutha, for instance, says that contracts should include certain safeguard clauses in the case of unavoidable circumstances. “A lot of export orders will get cancelled now as the contract never took something like this into account. We need to be more prepared for the unseen and the liability for that cannot be on the seller. Secondly, every MSME should take out atleast a year’s wages and invest the same in a contingency fund, which could either be a land or a safety investment,” he adds.
Adding to Mutha’s views, Ahuja of CICU highlights that keeping a war chest or a cash bank for such situations will come in handy. “It is necessary to keep some funds aside. Another good practice would be to keep businesses lean,” he says.
Experts also suggest that since the availability of skilled labour will be an issue post such migration, MSMEs need to invest in low cost automation to tide over skilled labour issues. Low cost insurance to cover special situations for business losses was another idea mooted.
For now, however, MSMEs are in for a long haul where the road to recovery is bound to be slow. Expectations soar high around a bailout package by the government which can offer relief to the sector in such pressing times and — more importantly — make them survive.
As Kothari of Kay Jay Forgings puts it, “Whoever survives these dark times will have a bright future.”
