This is the Buddy for January 30th. It was 65 years ago today that the four boys from Liverpool performed their concert on a London rooftop.
I'm a bit illiterate when it comes to music, so I have to rely on mainstream perception, and everyone pretty much agrees that The Beatles are the greatest band of all times. Then again, I'm a kind of mainstream in the interests I'm more knowledgeable about, and I usually have a lot of respect for the greatest-of-their-field clichès, even if they're not necessarily my favorites: Orson Welles for movies, Jack Kirby for comics, Osamu Tezuka for manga, Shakespeare for literature, and so on...
In some cases that's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy - there might be thousands of manga better than Tezuka's stuff, but I've never heard of them because they weren't translated. I know Yoshihiro Tatsumi produced several book-length stories that were never translated.
But, I don't know much about the Beatles, themselves. All I know is:
They were not actual beetles, but human beings. The name of the band comes from both the "beat" style of their music, and as a reference to Buddy Holly's band, The Crickets.
Pete Best was kicked out of the band just before they got super famous, and replaced with Ringo.
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.
According to legend, Paul died in the sixties and was replaced by a lookalike.
The guy who owned the famous LMW 281F Volkswagen from the Abbey Road cover hated the Beatles.
Jared Leto gained a million pounds to play the crazy who killed John in a terrible movie.
They had a concert on a rooftop once.
So, in honor of the Beatles, a band I've heard about, today's Buddy's traced from that famous album cover.

kaledev update!
I’d nearly forgotten. Since my last dev post, I’ve released a whole two other games. Look at them, look at them! φ(゜▽゜*)♪
🍶 Reaper’s Goodbye

A spooky, cozy anthology visual novel about a lonesome wanderer who trades stories with some interesting folks while waiting for the train. It’s drawn in a showa era gekiga artstyle and the stories themselves contains many references to the classic works of Yohihiro Tatsumi and Osamu Tezuka. I greatly enjoyed making this one *puffs cigarette*

An extremely short but emotional game made for One Asset Jam. You play as a Doll/robot getting dissected for parts, and you only have so much time before you’re dead. What will you say? What will you do? How will you spend those valuable seconds...? It can be finished in about five minutes but you should play it a few more times just to see what happens.
That’s what I’ve been up to lately. I’m still working away on Prayers, which you can play here. I’ll keep working diligently. Thank you for reading. 🙇🏽‍♂️✨

Single volume manga recommendation
For a long time I've been searching for short manga as I'm trying to build a collection of many series on a budget. I have compiled a list of a few manga that I personally enjoyed reading and that are somewhat easy to find in physical format. I made this list in hope you find something new and interesting today! I'll be leaving a Goodreads redirect if you want to read more about it and/or add it to your tbr. I'll be more that happy if you add more suggestions in the comments!<3

This is the Buddy for today, August 10th. He looks a bit more streamlined than my usual drawings - straighter lines for the nose, which don't really fit him. But I do like that artstyle.
I'd like to see more comics with that type of art, especially ones with more complex plots. There seems to be an unwritten rule that 'mature' comics must have realistic art, and comedies are allowed to keep things simpler. But of course that just means we have a lot of superhero and fantasy comics with realistic anatomy - bulging muscles and curvaceous women - and short comedies with looser art.
But when someone breaks with that rule, the result's often pretty good. The seinen work of Osamu Tezuka, or even Yoshihiro Tatsumi, for instance. And guys like Art Spiegelman and Jeff Smith also keep their art really clean. And who can forget the master himself, Will Eisner? Good stuff for sure.

Pages 54 and 55 from Katsumi Shimomoto‘s Cool Guy (X):
Katsumi Shimomoto debuted in Rental Manga in 1958. Because of his short career as a commercial manga artist, he is not so well known by the general public. However, as a mangaka, with his own distinctive style , he influenced and befriended many manga artists such as Takao Saito, Yoshihiro Tatsumi and Shintaro Miyawaki.  In 1968 he published "Kai Danji Gori Ippei" in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine and switched from Rental Manga to a weekly Magazine. He published in Bessatsu Magazine and Shonen King, but the size (and the pace) of the weekly publishing was not suitable for his work and he suspended his activities. However, he remained active in the shadows of the industry and is still present at lectures and fairs
