Thrown out a window and left for dead in Philly’s open-air drug den. Now she helps others escape its grip
Tumblr media
Philadelphia Woman's Incredible Journey from Addiction to Saving Lives Sarah Laurel's life took a horrifying turn when a fight with drug dealers in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood left her for dead. In 2017, she plummeted from a second-story window and lay in a vacant lot for 18 agonizing hours. Despite the excruciating pain from numerous injuries, she never lost consciousness. Laurel suffered a broken nose, shoulder blade, several ribs, and severe leg injuries, spending months in a wheelchair and enduring surgery to relearn how to walk. This near-death experience served as a wake-up call, prompting her to recognize the peril of addiction. She realized she could have been one of the thousands who succumbed to drug overdoses in Pennsylvania, which led the nation in drug-related deaths in 2017. Nationwide, drug overdose deaths surged by 52% from 2017 to 2021, reaching a staggering 106,699, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Laurel's personal journey from addiction and near-tragedy inspired her to take action. She founded Savage Sisters, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating the stigma of addiction and aiding those grappling with substance use disorder on Kensington's unforgiving streets. Her life had once been far from the stereotypical image of addiction. She worked her way up to become a director of sales at a hotel chain before her descent into addiction began with a prescription for Percocet to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. Laurel's opioid prescription eventually led her to heroin, jail, and homelessness in Kensington, notorious for rampant public drug use. She attempted sobriety numerous times but found recovery homes and rehab facilities lacking in empathy and holistic healing methods. In 2017, after her brutal attack, Laurel established Savage Sisters to provide support through nine recovery homes. The organization offers various healing methods, including yoga, kickboxing classes, and Reiki, an energy healing practice. Laurel and her team, all with their own addiction experiences, conduct outreach in Kensington, distributing safe supply kits, opioid overdose reversal spray, clothing, and food. Their work is grounded in empathy and a deep understanding of the pain and struggle faced by drug users. Despite her resilience, Laurel has witnessed the evolution of lethal substances infiltrating Philadelphia's illicit drug supply, from heroin to fentanyl, and now an animal tranquilizer called xylazine. The "zombie" drug moniker only adds to the stigma. She believes that Kensington has suffered from neglect by city leaders and a lack of compassion and care. Savage Sisters aims to humanize the situation and foster understanding and empathy, recognizing that addiction can affect anyone. Sarah Laurel's journey from the brink of death to a beacon of hope in Kensington serves as a testament to the power of recovery, compassion, and dedication in the fight against addiction. Aubrey 'Po' Powell
Interview
https://www.floydianslip.com/pink-floyd/interviews/aubrey-powell.php?fbclid=IwAR2VDACNo08FImPbe75D-33wRhaN61Ip7q09pMZDZhUJWuSaRxzAh7e_sGs
FS: You write in the book that so much has been said and written about Syd Barrett that saying anything else would be superfluous, but nonetheless, I've got you here, I have to ask: What was he like?
AP: Syd was a very close friend of mine and we knew each other in Cambridge before Pink Floyd even started. He was playing all sorts of little bands, the Hollering Blues and other local bands really sort of cutting his chops. He use to play with David Gilmour a lot. They used to teach each other guitar and stuff like that. I mean nobody could have foreseen later on that Syd would disappear from Pink Floyd and David would be his replacement.
Tumblr media
However, in those early days, Syd was this kind of elfin-like character. He was very skinny. He walked on the balls of his feet. He was very creative, very artistic. I remember walking into his mother's house one day and hanging from the ceiling were all these decahedrons he'd made out of balsa wood. I mean they were beautifully made. It must have taken him hours, and I said, "What are they for?" He said, "Nothing. I just like the look of them." He was like that. He was just endlessly creative. He liked to play Go, the Chinese puzzle game. He liked to read the "I Ching." He was very much a sensitive, intelligent, artistic man, very popular with the girls, beautiful looking. He, I think, was not cut out for the music business. A part from all these stories about overdoses of LSD and stuff like that, which are probably true, he took quite a lot of LSD, I think that he really did not like the music business in the sense that he felt he was having to pander to it.
Tumblr media
I mean he was the writer of the songs of Pink Floyd. He was under immense pressure to keep coming up with the goods. At the same time, he didn't particularly like the whole thing of having to dress up and be a pop star. There's a classic story which Roger Waters always tells which just before we went on "Top of the Pops," which was a big English rock show in television, he said to Roger, "I'm sure John Lennon doesn't have to do this." Roger said, "Syd, this is what we've been aiming for all along. This is what we do. This is what we want." It wasn't for Syd. He didn't want it. I think that view and sensitivity combined with LSD just made his mind slip away.
Tumblr media
At the time when he was at his worst, he and I were sharing a flat in South Kensington in London and it was just awful to see this person who could be violent one minute, I mean extremely aggressive and then passive with completely a dead look in his eye the next. It was frightening and I watched this person just sort of slip away into somebody who could no longer play the guitar even. He would sit there with a guitar in front of him, try to strum it, but his fingers wouldn't touch the strings. It was tragedy beyond, and then he left London and went back to live with his mother in Cambridge.
Tumblr media
I only saw him once again after that when he arrived at my studio just prior to going to Abbey Road Studios where he saw the band while we were making "Wish You Were Here," which was the most bizarre coincidence. I hardly recognized him when he arrived at Hipgnosis. He was very bloated. His hair was completely shorn. He was wearing a white trench coat, and I remember one of my assistants said, "Oh, by the way, Syd Barrett's at the door." I walked there to the front door and I opened the door and I couldn't believe what I saw. He was sort of incoherent rambling, "Where are they recording? What's happening?" I said, "Go to Abbey Road." He went there and even Pink Floyd didn't recognize him when he arrived there.
Tumblr media
It's a very sad tale and a very personal tale. I think in the book you see these photographs that I took of Syd just around about that period of time where he's doing yoga. You can see in his eyes there's a deadness. They're completely hollow. There's no emotion, nothing there. I'm sure he was doing yoga to try and keep himself together. Trying to keep himself centered, but it just wasn't working.

Review-Summer in the City

Summer in the City
by Lori Wilde, Priscilla Oliveras and Sarah Skilton
Published by: Kensington
FICTION / ROMANCE / CONTEMPORARY
Release Date: May 25, 2021
REVIEW:
4.5 stars-rounded up to 5 Summer in the City is a great collection of novellas revolving around the experiences of three couples on a hot New York City night. When a blackout occurs, emotional walls fall and possibilities seem limitless. The book starts with Lori Wilde's story, Night at the Museum, where an are exhibit brings together a couple that has been exchanging glances for months. I loved the communication between Victor and Ria, two very self-aware people. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the Soul Mates Seasons in the City exhibit, and would happily read more stories centered around each painting. 4 stars Next, in Lights Out, Priscilla Olivares delivers a great second-chance romance between a theatre performer and a journalist who's reviews haven't always been kind. I loved what this story had to say about how our past experiences can color our perceptions about our present and future relationships. Of the three novellas in this collection, Lights Out is my favorite. The author has a gift for telling a story that fully engages all of my senses. I loved the nods to the couple's culture, shown in their love of music, food, and shared stories. The sights and sounds of both the theatre and the city came alive for me. Every scene plays out like a movie in my mind, a rare thing for me as a reader. *For fans of Priscilla Olivares' Keys to Love series, there's even a nod to a certain health guru we've come to know and love. 5 stars Mind Games, the final novella in the collection, introduced me to author Sarah Skilton. This novella introduced me to the world of magicians in a fun, approachable way. It's the first time I've ever read a book with a hero with such an "untraditional" job and I honestly want more from this world! The special gifts Nick gave Alison really cemented for me how much he valued her. 4 stars In all, this collection was a really great escape. I have to add that I really love how each story normalized therapy and the importance of mental health/self awareness. (less)

Prince Harry’s aides have been told to start planning for a Royal Wedding, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.
Senior members of the Royal Family are understood to have been asked to look at their diaries to shortlist a series of suitable weekends next year – the clearest sign yet that an engagement announcement is imminent.
The news comes days after Harry and his girlfriend Meghan Markle held a private meeting with the Queen, seen by insiders as a sign that Her Majesty has given the union her blessing.
It is unlikely there would be any official announcement until after the celebrations for the Queen’s 70th wedding anniversary on November 20.
It may be significant, too, that the Palace chose to release news of the Duchess of Cambridge’s April due date comparatively early. A wedding is believed to be out of the question until Prince William and Kate’s third child is born.
One important consideration both for courtiers and the Church of England is Meghan’s status as a divorcee. Under Church rules, she would be unable to have a religious wedding and, although it could take place in church, a ceremony would be a blessing instead, with a civil marriage taking place separately.
This could lead to the choice of a comparatively low-profile venue, such as the Royal Military Chapel at Wellington Barracks at St James’s Park.
Meghan is currently in Toronto filming scenes for her legal drama Suits, and work will not finish on the series until the middle of November.
Sources in her circle believe she will then move into Kensington Palace, where Harry occupies the two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage. Meghan is believed to have told studio bosses that she will not return for another series of Suits next year, reportedly telling friends she was ‘happy to make this career sacrifice’ in order to concentrate on her charity work and her new life as a senior Royal.
Meghan, who made her first official public appearance alongside Harry at the Invictus Games in Toronto, is also planning to travel to India for the charity World Vision, of which she is a patron.
Palace aides have already been advising Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, a 60-year-old yoga instructor and therapist who lives in Los Angeles – a sign of how seriously the relationship is being taken in Royal circles.
What about Robert Jobson? Is he in “the know”. It’s hard to tell, because he writes for the Daily Mail.
Again, Rob Jobson, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can get married when the CHOOSE to. The press needs to stop acting like Prince William and Kate Middleton (mainly Kate Middleton) are at the center of the monarchy.
They also need to stop acting like Kate has a say in Prince Harry’s life. From everything we’ve heard, Prince Harry isn’t close to his brother or Kate Middleton at all.
I mean you can tell he gets annoyed at the engagements the two of them tag along to. They are always Prince Harry’s engagements, but then Prince William and Kate Middleton need good press. So, they tag along and degrade Prince Harry.
SUBMITTED
True about Harry not having his life dictated by Kate and William. But the Palace will also not be talking to Meghan’s Mother, they don’t advise and dictate to girlfriends and parents. Also that is before we talk about how Meghan can marry in the COE, have a wedding not just a blessing.
So that is 3 things just there that he is wrong about.

Royal baby watch: Did Meghan Markle have a doula or a midwife? Experts explain the difference
yahoo
Meghan Markle gave birth to a royal baby boy on Monday. While the public has still not learned the details around the newborn’s much-anticipated arrival, some frenzied rumors include that the duchess might have had her baby at home at Frogmore Cottage rather than a hospital, and that she’d hired a doula to help her through labor.
So, what the heck is a doula, anyway? And how is it different from a midwife, which was also among the rumors of possible royal-birth hires?
In simplest terms, a doula is “a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible,” according to DONA International, the world’s largest doula-certification agency, founded in 1992.
yahoo
A midwife, on the other hand, is a highly trained health professional who assists women throughout the birth process, either in hospitals or at home, and who also provides pre- and post-natal care. Midwives are employed by women who have medically uncomplicated pregnancies and, typically, who want a more natural-birth experience, as they approach birth not from a medical perspective, like that of physicians, but as a normal physiologic event, sticking to the woman-led Midwifery Model of Care, transferring high-risk pregnancies to obstetricians.
While midwives are at births to ensure healthy outcomes for both mom and baby, a doula’s primary concern is the laboring mother. “It doesn’t mean you’ll have the perfect birth, but it does mean that someone will be there as your guide, 100 percent, and is not there for anybody else,” Ann Grauer, a DONA-certified doula who has attended births and led trainings for 30 years, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “And to have someone completely on your side, I think, fills a spot in your DNA.”
Doulas can be effective allies at births no matter where they take place. “Hospitals can be a good place to birth, but a challenging place to birth,” Grauer says, referring to strict protocols and pressure about medical interventions that could sometimes make it difficult to stick to desired birth plans. “Doulas are there making sure you’re feeling good about things,” she says. “It’s hard to be cognizant of what’s going on around you, and that’s where we come in.” Doulas can serve as knowledgeable advocates, she adds, and “rather than us being your voice… we help you find your own voice.”
Tumblr media

At home births, meanwhile, “Doulas and midwives are like the perfect team,” Grauer says, adding that it’s never excessive, in her opinion, to have both present. “I’ve never heard a woman say to me, ‘Wow, I had too much support.’”
When deciding whether or not to hire a doula, the expecting mom or couple will want to take a few things into consideration, says Debra Flashenberg, a DONA-certified doula and owner of the Prenatal Yoga Center in New York City.
“If they are looking for someone to add an extra layer of continuous, unbiased support from someone not intimately involved in the birth, like a partner or relative, they should consider hiring a doula,” she says. “Adding a doula to the birth posse or birth team doesn’t have to mean you want an unmedicated birth — I had a ton of clients who intended on taking pain medication at some point. They wanted someone who could offer physical, emotional and informational support and was independent of the hospital.”
Further, Flashenberg adds, “Some people also have a lot of fear around birth, or carry past trauma. Having a doula could provide assurance, or another layer of comfort.”
Even with an incredibly supportive partner, she explains, “there can be limits,” especially if it’s the first birth experience. “They will be watching someone they deeply love go through a very intense experience, which may not allow them to step away see what is normal in labor,” Flashenberg says. “Many times, I would get a call from the partner after the first big contraction that they are ready to rush off to the hospital, when in fact, they are just turning the corner into active labor.”
She adds, “A truly respectful doula should enhance the experience for both the partner and the laboring person, and not necessarily take the place of a partner.”
Then, following the birth of the baby, there’s another type of support that can be hugely beneficial — that of a post-partum doula, whose focus is still 100 percent on the new mom.
“For my first birth, I would have been a hot mess without my postpartum doula,” Flashenberg, a mom of two, says. “They are, again, not emotionally involved, and come fresh and awake to support the new family. They have skills that even second-time parents may be a bit rusty on, and can offer support for those who decide to breastfeed.”
Notes Grauer, “A post-partum doula is the missing link. This is the place in America where we’ve dropped the ball horribly… We don’t tend too well to your psyche and heart while giving birth, and then, unless you’ve had a home birth, we just send you home all alone. It’s one of the most destructive ways to start parenthood.”
Post-partum doulas help new moms adjust to practicalities like their new bodies, breastfeeding, newborn care, and even “field trips,” like accompanying mother and baby on their first outings together. “It’s like mothering the mother,” she says. “You wind up feeling stronger and more in charge of your life even sooner.”
