AITA for lying to my friends and insulting my former boss?

Greetings Earthlings in my tablet. I do not correspond to this planet’s means of identifying oneself such as ‘gender’ or ‘age’.

So. I used to work for someone who I will be referring to as ‘YD’. This work of mine, it was being fought against by a group of people who I will be referring to as the ‘CGs’. The CGs are the direct enemies of YD, so that made them my enemies. After YD gave me the resources to properly destroy them (which did not succeed), I became stranded on this planet.

I was desperate to get off this planet because there was a geoweapon embedded in its core that would tear the planet apart from the inside. The CGs sabotaged my every attempt to escape and even incapacitated me as I was attempting to bargain with and inform them.

But one of the members, who I will be referring to as ‘S’ , freed me, wanting me to finish what I had tried to say. But I was petty and refused to talk at first.

I grew to trust ‘S’ however, and told him about the danger, believing that he knew a way to stop it. He didn’t know a way but he thought the CGs could help and wanted to tell them. I was reluctant to, but he convinced me. When we told them, for obvious reasons, they immediately wanted to stop the weapon. We planned to work together to build a drill so we could drill to the planet’s core and destroy it. Even though they were my enemies, I needed their help to ensure my survival.

As we were building the drill, I grew to care for the CGs, and them for me. They helped me grow and develop as a person. I saw the beauty and value of this planet. I wanted to destroy the weapon not just so I wouldn't die, but because there is life on this planet worth protecting.

The final step of building the drill involved us going to a communication base to retrieve the latitude and longitude coordinates of the weapon. While we were there, I found a communicator that would reach a direct communication line to YD.

I stole it. I had a good reason for it! We built this drill out of spare parts we found on the planet. Very cheap outdated technology. Our odds of succeeding were very low. I thought that I could use my findings to convince YD to spare this planet

My friends assumed that I had betrayed them. (which is fair). They attempted to stop me at every angle. They didn't even listen to me when I tried to explain! I had to physically fight them off, giant robots got involved (Okay maybe I should have tried harder to tell them my intentions but that's beside the point)

I had activated the communicator and pled my case to YD. And do you know what she said.

She completely disregarded everything I told her!!!! And said very clearly and bluntly that she wanted this planet to die!!!

She then told me that the only way I could redeem myself was to let the weapon grow. And you know what I did?

I refused and called her a clod!!!! To her face out of all things!!!!!!!

My friends congratulated me for this and said I was forgiven and in the right, but I have had some lingering doubts. 'S' told me about this court of opinion and here we are.

(edit: I have seen that there has been confusion over the meaning of clod. It means dirt. To call someone as important as YD a clod essentially means I view her as beneath me.)

Had a Steven Universe AU bounce around my brain a little bit so here's what I have so far of it

PD- Queen of a very prosperous and peaceful kingdom. Lush and beautiful. Refugees come to her kingdom to thrive. Gained the nickname Rose Queen from her subjects because of how kind and beautiful she is. Throws lavish balls as an excuse to hire refugees for new jobs within her kingdom. Her kingdom is mainly fields, forests, and mountains. Lots of farmland and mines. Main export is food and gems.

WP- Head of PD royal guard. Is PD personal knight. Used to work for WD as a part of her royal guard but WD traded her for PP. Is extremely loyal to PD. Is very good with all kinds of weapons. Also has a green thumb and if not by her queens side or training, she can usually be found in the garden tending to her roses and medicinal herbs. Is also pretty good at alchemy. Is an orphan.

BD- Is generally considered a pretty merciful Queen. Will swoop in to kingdoms that desperately need help and offer to help in exchange for them joining her kingdom and acknowledging her as their queen. If they refuse, then she doesn't mind going to war. Kingdom is fairly big. A lot of her kingdom is coastal. Main export is fish.

BP- Is BD lady in waiting/heir. Very knowledgeable in other kingdoms culture and goods. Personally attends to all of BD needs. Knows how to make other kingdoms rulers lower their guard so BD can try to sway them into giving up their crown. Knows all the stuff about kingdom relations and is very knowledgeable about trade and commonly sits in and helps lead meeting about what to do with new territory's goods. Loves painting in her free time.

YD- A war queen. She tears through kingdoms either taking them for herself or leaving them for Blue or Pink to swoop in and pick up the pieces. Her kingdom is mainly mountainous. Main export is metal. Is extremely smart and very determined. Is very good at navigating a battlefield but not so much at navigating the workings of her court.

YP- Is YD lady in waiting/advisor/heir. Knows her way around a battlefield just as well as a ballroom. Tells YD everything that goes on with the commoners and nobles of the land. Is very devious and cunning. Often sits in on war meetings offering advice. Runs the court whenever YD is away at war, which is a fair amount of the time. Is very good with handling conflict and solving disputes. Often models for BP when the diamonds get together.

WD- A distant Queen. Her kingdom is very prosperous and large. She does not make many public appearances. Her pearl makes them for her. Her kingdom has several different biomes within it but it's mainly forest. Main export is lumber and weaponry. Does not often go to war, but when she does, she decimates whatever kingdom she goes against. Very few survivors. She's very blunt and tends to not waste time dancing around a subject when she can just get straight to the point. This has earned her a reputation for being cold from those who have met her. Secretly is a big softie for the other diamonds and their pearls. PD pearl use to be apart of her royal guard. Knows that she's the reason why PP is an orphan and has a disability and that's part of the reason why she adopted PP. Feels guilty for hurting a child like that.

PP- Use to be a royal jester in PD court. WD saw her at one of PD balls and thought she looked absolutely stunning. WD traded her pearl in the royal guard to PD for PP. Is an orphan. Now is WD lady in waiting and heir. Makes public appearances for WD and handles most of the ongoings of court and day to day life. Is a very skilled blacksmith and enjoys experimenting in her forge. Is also a very good dancer. Doesn't speak much when she doesn't have to. Parents were killed in an attack on PP kingdom of birth when she was a baby. This left her with a big scar across one of her eyes and partial blindess in it. Kingdom was attacked by WD forces. She is one of few survivors. Despite her scar, she's widely regarded as one of the most beautiful women in WD kingdom. Is extremely kind.

The Diamonds and Pearls travel between the kingdoms often and the 4 Diamonds are often referred to as The Sister Queens even though they're not really related. They did all grow up together though as their parents were close friends. Their parents all died due to a mysterious illness that plagued their land long ago. They're all unmarried. Most of the world is run by them with a few small countries still existing, mainly due to treaties with one of the Diamonds kingdoms.

If anyone wants to know more, please ask. I would love to talk about this and flesh it out a bit more.

I think you may have said this about rose but do you think if she confronted the diamonds, she could have convinced them to stop right? Like steven did? Most people and seemingly even future seem to think so if she did talk responsibility but at the same time I'm just like wondering if it's a good idea of despite what's been established about the diamonds. And bringing up future because of the whole "running away from her problems" rant from Steven and presumably that also include her not confronting the Diamonds I have yet to see someone say that it was actually a bad idea because you got WD, who could have controlled her and YD and BD assuming if let's say she did convince both of them.

So, I definitely feel there was no way that Pink would've been able to convince the other three to stop. If Pink were to rebel as herself, the others definitely would've taken away what little power she already had and make her solely a political puppet figure (look like an authority figure in public, but having no say in what goes on behind the scenes). The only reason Steven was able to convince the others because Pink was gone entirely and it was their fault.

I also believe that Pink rebelled as Rose to give her gems a chance at a choice. She probably felt that if she rebelled as Pink, her court would follow with it simply out of obligation and not from a genuine desire for change.

In order for a country to remain colonised, it needs more than just a military presence; it also requires the colonised subjects to buy in to the idea that they are inferior. -- AH

Feeling of Palestinians that they "must" die; that their lives are not seen as worthwhile (cf. "If I must die, then you must live" poem by Refaat Alareer). Palestinians seen as disposable; dispossessed. -- YD

In Germany, Palestinianness has been criminalised in order to protect Jews; but that is not what it is really about. The vast majority of Jews do not live in Israel, and the concept of Jewishness has to become disentangled from the state of Israel in people's minds and public narratives. -- UR

Difficult to even know if we should talk about 'narratives,' because it's not like this is one version of truth vs. another. But it is helpful to reflect on how different narratives come into being. -- KND

Hierarchy of empathy: Israelis are 'children,' Palestinians are 'people under 18,' etc. -- AH

Historically in journalism there are rules around not showing the most graphic depictions of e.g. dead children, people grieving those who have just died, etc. But think about how many bodies of Ukrainian children you have seen, versus how many bodies of Palestinian children you have seen.

The Palestinians have had to show their most vulnerable moments over and over again, until the narrative began to shift. Those in power require the direct humanisation of colonised or oppressed people over and over again in order to begin to care. -- MH

The status of traditional media as trusted / trustworthy is under threat. This is generally how we have presented legal evidence of e.g. war crimes in the past. What is happening now with the (lack of) media narrative around Palestine will have huge implications in times to come.

However, it is easy to be overly optimistic about social media. It is still being censored; for example, Meta has been censoring and shadowbanning Instagram accounts that call for a ceasefire.

Generational differences: younger people who don't rely solely on mainstream media tend to think more critically, apply their own values, and humanise Palestinians.

This situation will rapidly accelerate the drift away from traditional media towards social media and personal narratives. -- AH

*** SOME QUESTIONS FROM THE Q&A ***

- Narratives of saviourism; is humanitarian aid actually a solution to the problem? Or do we require something more structural on a societal level?

- How do we get around the shadowbanning on social media and the targeted ads from places that have the money / power (e.g. if you googled 'ICJ' throughout most of today, the top link was not the International Court of Justice but an Israeli ad).

- How do we call on employers to not adopt the non-legally-binding and incorrect definition of 'antisemitism' that is currently implying that anyone who is anti-Zionist is an antisemite?

- What do we say to people who are afraid of speaking out for fear of backlash?

- Is there any accountability for the onesidedness of the so-called 'reputable' media?

- Is Palestine decolonising our brains?

We owe very little of what we know about Gaza to mainstream media; this is a damning indictment of current media. There are no consequences for silence, which puts all the onus on individual journalists to speak up, which has potential risks for them. Why are most journalists not covering the deaths of their Palestinian colleagues? -- MH

Media accountability; often, suppressed narratives within media are a sign of a failing democracy. The UK opposition has not been holding the government accountable. This is not how our political system is supposed to work.

Having such a huge focus on humanitarian angles flattens / ignores the historic and colonial context. The agenda has been to cover this in a way that obscures the colonial history, because that would require an existential reckoning which people are unwilling to engage with. -- AH
