CHAPTER FOUR — SweetLies —
third person pov
⚠︎°。(DISCLAIMER : CONTAINS A MENTION OF SUICIDE AND MURDER) 。°⚠︎
The rest of psychology was not that bad in Y/N's opinion. She had asked Oko about his occult book that he started reading halfway through the icebreakers, leading to him rambling for about twenty minutes. The last minutes of class were spent with Oko apologizing for 'wasting her time' and Y/N assuring him it was fine. Long story short, the two exchanged numbers and Oko was very flustered when he left the classroom.
'Amao didn't tell me where to meet him, so I should probably check the cooking club first.'
Y/N gathered up her things quickly, almost stepping out of the room before Mr. Kina called her to his desk.
"Sorry, dear, but I heard you are also new to the school, correct?" The h/c-ette nodded as confirmation. "I was told by the guidance counselor to remind you to get to school early tomorrow for your meeting. Do you know where her office is? If not, I have a map of the school I can give you," the pink haired male smiled at her.
"I appreciate the offer, but I have my own map, thank you." Her teacher hummed in understanding and Y/N took that as her cue to leave. "Have a good day, Mr Kina." She waved and exited the room, knowing Nemesis was following her.
The cooking club was on the first floor and her classroom was on the second. How convenient that it was right next to the staircase she went down. She saw Osano standing right outside one of the doors, him angrily looking at his phone. Right before she opened her mouth to talk to him, his ringtone, a catchy J-pop song, started to play and he rushed off through the hall.
Nemesis walked beside Y/N and glanced at her. "That was certainly strange, wasn't it?" Y/N glared at him in return. The h/c-ette knocked on the closed gray doors, Saki answering the door.
"Oh hey, Y/N! Are you here to join the cooking club?" Her bright smile nearly blinded the aforementioned girl. As Y/N was about to respond, she heard her best friend exclaim her name.
Taeko Yamada swiftly walked up to her, intertwining their hands. "Saki, she's not here to join, Amao said he would give her a tour. I would come with, but I have to walk Hanako home today," the ravenette pouted, sighing dramatically. "I need to make sure that he doesn't get lost. You both know how he is."
"I didn't know you were in the cooking club, Tae." Y/N tilted her head at the thought of Taeko not telling her something as important as that.
"No, I'm not, but Osano is. Sometimes I stay here during club activities so we can walk home together. Speaking of," the ravenette's head poked out of the club doors and turned, her eyes looking for someone. "Where is Osano? I swear he was just out here."
"He left to take a phone call, it seems." Nemesis responded from behind Y/N, Saki jumping at how he suddenly appeared. "If this is the cooking club, why do I only see pastries on the counter?" The girl with teal hair sighed, her cheeks beginning to grow pink at Nemesis speaking to her.
'Hmm. How interesting. I'll have to ask about that later.'
Suddenly, a shout was heard from down the hallway. Nemesis wrapped his arm around Y/N's waist, pulling her into his chest as he stepped back. Hanako Yamada, the disturber of peace, flopped on the floor after trying to tackle-hug a certain h/c-ette. He groaned loudly as his face pressed against the tiles.
"Hanako! Oh my god, are you hurt?" His sister stepped forward and helped the boy up. "Alright, you aren't. But you could've gotten yourself or other people seriously hurt. Luckily Nemesis got Y/N out of the way, or she would've been on the floor with you." Taeko slightly glared at the fact that Nemesis was still holding Y/N, his arm having loosened its hold. Hanako muttered an apology, his face also falling at Y/N and the man behind her.
"Yeah, thanks, Nemesis. My hero." Y/N awkwardly chuckled and stepped away from him, right as the concerned cooking club leader popped out of the room.
Amao Odayaka did not look very pleased at the sight of the four students in the hall. He sighed and beckoned them into the clubroom with a weary smile.
"Can't say I didn't expect Taeko's sibling to already be causing trouble," the brunet chuckled. The first year in question hung his head and trudged into the cooking club.
Y/N followed immediately after, but not before another club room caught her eye. One of the doors wasn't shut properly, showing what looked to be a large pentagram in the middle of the floor, surrounded by unlit candles. 'Must be Oko's club.' She smiled at the thought. The occult club and cooking club being near each other was definitely strange, given the opposing aesthetics.
The cooking club room was entirely pink, it made sense that Osano had joined. Even the utensils and stand mixers were pink. It was almost blinding. All of the members with their either bright or pastel colors fit in perfectly. And then there was Nemesis, who was scowling and squinting at the whole room, not trying to hide his disdain for the interior decorating.
The members were all sitting at a table (pink, of course, are you seeing a theme here?) and sharing what looked to be a tray of calamari. There were only two girls, including Saki, which Y/N found to be odd. 'Isn't Amao Odayaka one of Akademi's golden boys? Don't a lot of girls like him?' She was brought out of her thoughts when a black haired girl waved at her and smiled.
"So, Y/N, these are all the members besides Osano and Raibaru Fumetsu. Kokona was in the club last year, but she preferred drama club, sadly." Saki wrapped her arm around Y/N's shoulders, a grin stretching from ear to ear. "I know you could choose something else, but I think it would be nice if you joined. Right Ajia?" Saki's eyes fell onto the same ravenette that waved.
"Oh, me? Yes, it would be cool to have another girl around. I am only a first year, though, so I don't know if I have any say." The girl sheepishly smiled and looked back at her plate, fingers fiddling with her utensils. "Would you like any octodogs? We just made them." Y/N's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, looking at Saki to explain.
"Right, you don't know what those are." Ajia murmured an apology, Y/N waving it off. "They're just hotdogs we cut into the shape of octopi." The h/c-ette glanced at Nemesis, who subtly shook his head. She politely declined and moved out from her place under Saki's arm.
Amao cleared his throat from where he was leaning against the counter. "We better get going if we want to see the whole school before club time ends." He bit his lip, the corners of his lips turning upwards. 'That's ho-', Y/N's thought was interrupted by a ginger barging into the room.
"Y/N, you're still here! Now I can show you around." He was panting, probably having run around the school looking for her. The other club members glanced between the two, smirking. Amao quietly protested that he, in fact, already said he was going to.
"It could be a group thing," Taeko smiled. "Hanako still doesn't know his way either so we can all go." She looked around at her friends in question, Y/N agreeing. Osano glared lightly at the male with brown hair but sighed and reluctantly nodded. Hanako grabbed Y/N's hand and began to drag her out of the room.
⊹₊┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ✿ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈₊⊹
"This is the nurse's office."
"Yeah, I'm sure they could tell due to the sign right next to the door." Osano rolled his eyes at Amao, who, in turn, huffed and faced away from the ginger. Taeko and Hanako warily glanced over while Nemesis and Y/N didn't try to hide their stares.
The group hadn't gotten far - they were still on the first floor - since Osano kept bickering with both Amao and Nemesis (even though the latter hadn't said a word). Luckily, the brunet tried his best to keep the party going and they had made it fully down one of the hallways. Taeko steered the group into the courtyard.
"Oh, and here's where Taeko reads, like a dork." The ginger scoffed and put his hands on his hips, glaring at the aforementioned girl. Y/N nervously laughed and placed her hand on Taeko's shoulder.
"I think it's nice that she's an academic. It makes her more pleasant to talk to, unlike some people."
'Oh my god, did the sweet baker boy just throw shade? What is happening right now?'
Taeko smiled and appreciatively nodded at Amao. "I quite like reading. Osano, you only read what's required, which is why you don't like it." Osano made a few noncommittal noises but ended up slouching and walking away, the others following behind him. "He gave up because it's true," the ravenette whispered to Y/N, the two giggling.
"I heard that!"
⊹₊┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ✿ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈₊⊹
The tour, in Y/N's opinion, started to get boring once they got halfway through the second floor, after passing by the martial arts club. But the tour went on. Nothing had particularly interested Y/N. She could join the science club like her mother had, but what if the members didn't like her? She already cooked at home, so there was no need to do it as an extracurricular. Sewing, art, music, drama, occult, and photography. Wait... photography?
Finally on the third floor, Y/N stared at the closed doors in front of her while the others walked past the club, not bothering to explain. There were people in it, she could hear them. Her curiosity got the best of her and she knocked.
"Y/N? What are you doing?" Hanako skipped over to her and beamed. His black eyes fell upon the sign as he mouthed the words. "Oh! I didn't know you were interested in photography!"
She wasn't interested in photography. Prior to moving, she had exchanged emails with Megamo Saikou and he had told her to be wary of this club in particular. While, of course, they were only normal students, they were far too adamant about finding out the supposed murderer's identity. There had only been one corpse found on campus. Toga Tabara, found near the dumpsters, head split open, shoes left by the railing on the roof. People outside Akademi assumed he committed suicide. The students knew better. Toga, a boy so concerned about his future that he joined every club, wouldn't give it all up. The photography club, being their perceptive selves, decided to ditch being lazy and get on top of that supposed case. Due to them investigating, Megamo didn't want Y/N to slip up and have the club find out that they were to be married. Coincidentally, Info had told her the same thing about them.
'How strange that a lone hacker and the heir to a tech company could have the exact same opinion on a group of students. Disregarding the fact that Info used to be a student here, it's too close.'
A blond male answered the door, knocking Y/N out of her thoughts. Hanako had completely changed his stance and the others were now closer, meaning it took a moment for this guy to answer the door.
"Sorry, we aren't accepting new members. I hope you understand." The boy's pale blue eyes stared into Y/N's. She raised an eyebrow and tilted her head.
"Oh, is it because it's the beginning of the year? Other clubs are taking in new people." She knew why they didn't want new members, but she wanted to hear his excuse.
"No, we are just choosing to stay as a group of five. We work the best that way." Before Y/N could get another word, he closed the door. She sighed and looked at her fellow students. Amao shrugged, as did Osano. Taeko just scratched her neck and laughed nervously.
"It's probably nothing personal. Maybe they're just in a bad mood. It is only the first day, after all." Hanako nodded along with his sister's statements.
"They're losers, anyway. You're too good for them, n/n." Osano's cheeks grew a few shades of pink upon realizing what he said. "Platonically, of course, not that I needed to say that, since it's obvious that I would-" The ginger was cut off by Amao placing his hand over the other boy's mouth and shaking his head while chuckling.
"Stop rambling and let's continue the tour, shall we?"

CHAPTER THREE — Don't Bother —
third person pov
Walking into English, it was clear that all of the students were confused. Supposedly, the ancient teacher from last year and all the years before got replaced. At least that's what everyone was assuming. The teacher had a reputation for closing the door right when the late bell rang and taping a sign on the outside saying 'Don't Bother'. Clearly, no late students were accepted. But that wouldn't make sense because, ten minutes after the bell and she wasn't there. Many students were complaining and talking about leaving class. The rest just made small talk and pulled their phones out.
Osano and Y/N sat a desk apart with a girl named Raibaru Fumetsu in between them. She was nice and had a bubbly personality. Her shoulder length orange pigtails were held up by two pink polka-dotted hair ties and a bright purple headband.
While the two were waiting for the 'old as time' teacher to show up, Raibaru and Y/N got acquainted with each other. It turns out that the ginger had used to live in America as a child before moving to Japan and transferring into Akademi a year before the h/c-ette left. Right before Osano was about to butt into the conversation, the door to the classroom opened.
In walked a slightly disheveled man in his early twenties, at the most, wearing a black blazer and a white button-up underneath. His burgundy pants suited his maroon eyes and black loafers. In his hands was a black messenger bag and his hair was slightly messed up. He rushed to the front desk and fixed his hair in the small mirror on the smart board before turning around curtly with a sheepish smile on his face.
"I am so terribly sorry for being late, class. This didn't happen any other time today. I got stuck in one of the many storage closets after last period. Moving onto more important topics, as you all may know, the teacher that taught here previously, Ms Nabatame, has recently come down with a serious illness. So I am here to fill her position. While I am only a substitute, I promise I know what I'm doing."
"But you're like, our age?" Hana Daidaiyama, one of Musume's friends, piped up from her front row seat, her tone light and teasing. Somewhat flirtatious if you looked into it.
"Right, if you're eighteen then I am three years older than you. I'm twenty-one. I skipped a few grades and I'm still in college. Which I do recommend you all go to, by the way. I was cleared by the school, and my school, to work here as a substitute for as long as it takes for your teacher to get better. Now, I am Mr Rana. Pleased to meet all of you. I can already tell there are some bright minds in this room." His reassuring smile slightly shook as he realized what he just said. "Oh, that makes me sound old."
A chorus of laughs came out from the students at Mr Rana's deflated attitude. Most of the girls in the room (and a lot of the guys) were checking him out and honestly, Y/N couldn't really blame them. 'I mean, of course it isn't appropriate to be looking at your teacher like that, but I'm just saying...'
As the lesson went on, Mr Rana continued to draw out laughs from a good portion of the class just from his charm and unwillingness to risk sounding 'old'. He would constantly mutter things like 'I'm not that wise, I swear,' or the ever-famous, 'I sound like my father.'
When he passed out a worksheet for all of them to do in the last twenty minutes of class, Raibaru helped Osano and Y/N as much as she could while also finishing the questions lightning fast. But the h/c-ette happened to notice Raibaru's happy face fall into a glare when the notorious delinquent passed by her desk to sharpen his pencil. Osoro Shidesu.
Of course, Y/N did research on Akademi before she transferred. Who would she be if she didn't? In the past few months, she had started talking to a hacker who just so happened to work with Saikou Corp. The two called each other often and became fast friends, despite how flirty and off-putting he was. For the most part, Y/N spoke to him for the information he handed to her. He told her all about the students who attended Akademi, since he dropped out right before the new school year started.
After speaking to the man who she called 'Info', how could she not know about Osoro Shidesu? He was the least favorite student of all the teachers by far. He even made the nurse quit her job, and she was replaced with a clumsy male college student just as fast. His legacy would live on through Akademi even after he graduates from the delinquents that follow after him like lost puppies and the injuries and trauma he's given to so many people. Because of that, of course, he's in Y/N's English class.
As he walked by her desk for the seven millionth time, she held her arm out, blocking him from walking. He scowled at her menacingly, and as a response, Y/N faked a convincing scared expression. 'If I were anyone else, I would be pretty scared. So of course, I pretend to be.'
"Yes, sorry, uhm, I was just wondering what you got for number eighteen? I am not having a great time with this worksheet." The h/c-ette played dumb and innocent, her arm springing back to her desk as he looked between her, Raibaru, and the paper in her hand before he leaned closer to her.
"Listen bitch, I don't really care what you need help with." He said in a hushed voice, striding right past her, his jacket almost hitting her in the face.
Raibaru instantly whipped her head to watch him march to the back of the room as he flung himself into his desk and huffed. Y/N quickly lost interest and turned back around and studied Raibaru as she continued to look at him.
"You good, Rai?"
"What? Oh, yeah, sorry. He keeps glancing at you. Probably thinking 'who does this gorgeous chick think she is to interrupt me, can't she see I'm busy hunching my shoulders?'"
"I don't like the way he's looking at you, Y/N." Raibaru and Y/N turned to look at Osano, whose face flushed a bright pink as he scoffed and tried to hide it. "Well, I just mean that he's glaring. Which, you know, isn't very nice. Ok, alright, Raibaru, Y/N, stop laughing. Shut up, you guys."
The ginger girl and the h/c-ette both quietly laughed at Osano's words, before noticing the teacher approaching them. The trio tried to pay attention to their worksheet as Mr Rana walked by.
"Oh, you already finished your questions! In five minutes, my goodness. You are Ms Fumetsu, correct?" Mr Rana looked shocked at her fully bubbled-in paper. Osano's head popped up beside the teacher's chest, his face gawking at the sight in front of him. "You also did, Ms L/N. Good job, both of you. I'm proud to know that I really do have such smart people in my class. I'll take the papers if you want to turn them in early." Raibaru and Y/N both nodded quickly before handing their papers to the well dressed man. He smiled professionally and turned to walk towards his desk.
"How come I didn't get complimented? I swear I'm getting them all right. You two are cheating or something." Osano slumped in his desk, a puff of air moving his bangs while he glared at the two girls.
"You know we didn't cheat, don't be childish. Also you aren't getting them all right. You got numbers twenty-two, seventeen, twelve, nine, four, and two wrong." Raibaru glanced at Y/N with a smug smile before returning her gaze back to Osano.
"How?!"
⊹₊┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ✿ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈₊⊹
No one (besides Nemesis) in Y/N's English class was in her next period - Study Hall. Lucky for the girl, Study Hall took place farther away in the library, but Nemesis didn't seem to be in the mood to talk at all. 'Great, thanks for making me start the conversation, buddy.'
"Soooooooo, what's been your favorite class so far?" She looked at him while he marched on, glaring at the tiles beneath him.
"World History."
"And why's that?"
"Nobody tried to talk to me then." He pointedly looked away from the tiles and his harsh red eyes stared into hers. Y/N gladly took the chance to ditch him when they arrived at the library doors, rushing forward to look for anyone that she knew. As if on cue, she heard an energetic boy's footsteps.
"Y/N! We share two classes together, I can't believe it!" Aso Rito wrapped an arm around her shoulders and began to steer her in the direction of a random table. "Looks like fate has decided we'll be friends." 'Yes, that's great and all, but could you be quieter about it?'
"It does seem like it, huh?" The h/c-ette smiled playfully. She didn't notice who was sitting at the table Aso was bringing her to since she was too busy focusing on the people staring at them. Thank goodness that familiar ravenette had her nose buried in a book.
"Taeko, I didn't realize that we could share classes if we're from different years." Hearing her best friend's voice, her head shot up and her lips instantly contorted into a bright smile.
"I'll be honest, I didn't either. I also didn't know that you make friends so quickly." She laughed sheepishly to herself and her eyes drew from Aso back to her book. "Guess it's just another amazing trait of yours."
There was something in her voice that Y/N couldn't quite place. Normally she would have been good at that kind of thing, but the stress of moving must have made her rusty. 'What a shame, one of the only good things I inherited from my parents and it's disappearing.' If Y/N was to be what they wanted, then she would need to bring back her skills of a ruthless businesswoman like her mother. Cunning, manipulative, and able to read someone with a single glance. The manipulative part seemed to still be intact, unlike the other two.
She had no idea why her parents would have wanted her to grow up and be like them if they were just going to hand her off as a trophy wife to someone she barely knew. It made slight sense - a relationship between the future heir of Saikou and the daughter of Saikou America's CEO would signify unity across countries.
A buzz from her phone brought her back to the present, a text from Info.

On it!
"Y/N? Are you alright?" Aso's words rang quietly through her ears.
"Yes, I'm alright. Sorry, my parents are texting me." She quickly sat down and sighed, her arms folding in front of her chest. Aso took a seat next to her, casually leaning his arms on the table.
"Taeko?" A meek voice sounded behind the ravenette, all three of them turning to look. "Sorry if I was interrupting anything."
There was a boy, clearly a second-year, holding about three dark books. His hair was long and slightly curled at the ends. His eyebrows furrowed together, the light purple of his eyes shining against his pale skin that was quickly reddening at the attention.
"No, you're fine, Oko." Taeko shot him a soft smile, taking on a sisterly role towards him. "What did you need?"
"Oh, well, I was just, uhm, going to ask if you saw my gloves. I seemed to have left them yesterday." Y/N's eyes darted over to Taeko with an eyebrow raised. She shook her head knowingly.
"I did. I'll bring them to you tomorrow." Taeko cleared her throat and stood up, taking a place next to the navy-haired boy. "This is Oko Ruto. He tutors Hanako, my little brother, every Sunday. He is very nice, but a bit shy, so don't feel offended if he doesn't talk to you." All of her words seemed to be aimed toward the h/c-ette, despite looking at Oko for reassurance on what she said, earning a nod in return. "And you already know Aso. But this is Y/N. She and I have been friends since we were tiny and she moved to America about ten years ago and she is back, thankfully." Taeko playfully glared and wagged a finger at her. "She had us all worried that she was gone for good, but here she is when we need her the most!"
"You're welcome." Y/N put a bright smile on her face and elbowed Aso lightly as he laughed. "It's great to meet you, Oko. What do you tutor Hanako in?"
"Well, it's mostly history, but we do talk about math occasionally." His hands fiddled with the fingers of his fully black gloves.
"Oh, I might need you to tutor me!" That statement, while untrue, made Aso and Taeko laugh quietly, Oko sheepishly smiling and hiding his face behind one of his humongous books. His hands moved to adjust his hold and the girl caught a glance of a gold engraved pentagram on a maroon cover.
'So he's into the occult. Good to know.'
During the remainder of Study Hall, the four students all sat around the table and just chatted quietly, a random outburst from the table next to them interrupting their conversations about every five minutes. At around the sixth time, Y/N glared over at the group, noticing a man with a side ponytail holding what looked like a script.
"That's the drama club. They're probably arguing over what play to perform. Last year it was The Phantom of the Opera. I have to admit, it was an amazing performance. Kizano Sunobu, the one standing up, had the starring role as the phantom. Even though I don't particularly like the guy, his voice is gorgeous." Aso looked around at the drama club with an indifferent expression.
"They'll probably choose Romeo and Juliet. I've heard that's the club leader's favorite." Taeko calmly raised her head from her book and rested her chin on her fist. "Not a bad choice, but there's definitely better options out there."
Y/N continued glancing at the drama club until the club leader made eye contact with her. He smirked and waved slightly while she looked away as fast as she could. About ten minutes later, the bell rang and everyone was off to take a fifteen minute break between classes.
⊹₊┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ✿ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈₊⊹
"Finally, the last class of the day. I hate the start of new semesters. Don't you?" Raibaru took a second and paused at her seat, setting her bag down slowly. "Well, I suppose it's worse for you. Being at a new school and all that." She smiled and shook her head slightly, sitting down.
Y/N glanced around the room, taking note of the occult person she met earlier sitting in front of her. "It isn't all that bad. At least I know some people, so I'm not entirely new." Raibaru tilted her head at the thought and hummed in agreement. "Anyways, I'm excited for psychology. What do you know about the teacher?"
"Well, this is the only psychology period, so Akademi hired a nurse in training to teach it for a quarter of the semester, while they work in the actual nurse's office the rest of the day. Don't we all love a promising college student?" She beamed at the idea and giggled softly.
"Yes, we do." A moment later, the room fell silent at the sight of a pink-haired man walking into the room. He looked winded, his cheeks flushed.
He took a moment to calm himself, clearly doing a breathing exercise while his fingers tapped rhythmically on the table. "So sorry, everyone. I had to run across campus. The time in the nurse's office is wrong - it's, like, seven minutes behind. Sorry, again. First days are hard." He continued to mumble about the clock in the office and began to prepare for class, laying his things on his desk.
"Keep in mind that this is the first class I have ever taught. For those of you who don't know, I'm Mujo Kina. I am majoring in psychology at the college here and was chosen to help you all learn about the study of the brain and why it reacts and functions the way it does. I hope you all enjoy hearing about it at least as half as much as I do, considering it is one of my special interests." He huffed, clearly losing his breath again. Mr. Kina began to search for something in his bag, fumbling with it once he found it. He took two puffs out of a bright red inhaler and slumped into his desk chair.
"Since it's the first day, I had planned a series of icebreakers. And I know that no one likes doing those, but we all need to warm up a bit. Be social, no matter how much we don't want to." The class, Y/N included, sighed and looked at the respective people they knew. Raibaru glanced at her, amused. She rolled her eyes playfully and scoffed. "So, I can tell you all are excited. I want you to turn to the person behind you and pair up to discuss your favorite class so far and why it's your favorite. Have fun!"
Since there were two people behind Y/N pairing up, she was left with Oko. He turned his head shyly and waved. "What a coincidence seeing you here. It's been ages since I last saw you. How have you been?"
He laughed slightly and hid his face in his hands. "Well, you know, I've been alright in the years that I haven't seen you. Uhm, I guess we actually have to talk about our classes. So far, mine has been World History, which is mostly just anthropology. I like learning about people and different cultures, so that's definitely why it's my favorite. What's your favorite class?"
"Alright. My favorite has been Chemistry." Oko cut her off by asking if the lab had been destroyed, quickly apologizing after. "Yes, the lab is sealed off for now, so we have to spend our classes in the library. I love the study of chemistry in itself, but I also like the people in it too. I also love your explanation for the history thing. I, too, love the study of people. Plus one of my friend's favorite classes is history." She paused briefly to look at the teacher at the front. "I have it second period, what about you?"
"Oh, I have it first. Great way to wake up, considering I am always tired." He chuckled and Y/N faked a small laugh with him. A minute later, he followed where she was looking to see Mr. Kina scribbling something on a sheet of paper. "He seems... a bit nervous." The girl looked over Oko's shoulder to see him picking at his fingernails.
She laughed, laying her head on her desk. "Definitely more than a bit." She propped her chin on her hand and looked up at Oko. "Can't blame him, though. Teenagers are ruthless." Oko looked somewhat melancholic as he mumbled an agreement.
The first icebreaker took about twenty minutes before Mr. Kina prompted them with another question. Oko and Y/N chose to ignore the questions and sat in silence, occasionally interrupted with comments on classmates or the teacher himself.
Observers bond with other observers.

CHAPTER TWO — Not Too Sweet —
third person pov
After three different classes, someone almost burning the school down, one over-dramatic love confession, and a mental breakdown, lunch was finally here. Y/N thanked whatever being was watching over her for classes flying by. Luckily, she had gotten to skip her second class, World History, due to her pretending to get lost on the way to the bathroom.
While Osano and Y/N were leaving their first period, the ginger told her to meet him 'oh, uh, and Taeko, of course!' on the rooftop for lunch. Y/N had happily agreed, wanting to catch up with her friends.
Nemesis and Y/N were leaving the greenhouse from Botany and the male quickly grabbed her shoulder and pulled her behind their classmates. His red eyes met hers and Y/N was acutely aware of how close they were and how many classmates were looking at them. The ravenette's grip on the girl's shoulder loosened as he realized how uncomfortable she was.
"I apologize, um, where are you eating for lunch?"
"I'm eating on the roof with Osano and Taeko."
His eyes darkened and he did not look pleased, as he muttered how he would be joining them. Y/N's eyebrow raised in curiosity, "Do you not like Osano and Taeko? You don't even know them."
The duo started walking and his gloved hand raised to his mouth, clearing his throat. "I do not think Taeko is that bad, although it is too early to tell. Osano puts me off a bit. He kept throwing small paper balls at you during class."
"That's true," Y/N laughs, "but Osano's just like that." Nemesis deadpanned at her words as they finally made it to the rooftop's doors. He held the door for her and she quickened her pace at the sight of not only Taeko and Osano, but Hanako, Taeko's little brother.
The girl beamed at all three of them and Hanako's face lit up as he jumped up to wrap his arms around her. He was still a bit shorter than her, which he remarked at, drawing out a chuckle from Y/N.
"Y/N! You're back!" He grinned and pulled away from her while still keeping his arms around her shoulders and hers around his waist.
"I said I would be back, didn't I?" She raised an eyebrow at him teasingly and he stared into her eyes, his cheeks flushing slightly. He pulled completely away, one of his hands drawing up to cover his face.
"You, uhm, well, yes, you did. And you're back, which is great, so that's good." The girl laughed a bit at his antics and so did Taeko, who pulled Y/N towards her by her arm.
"Alright, Hanako, no hogging Y/N." She looked at her brother, faking a stern expression. She quickly turns back to Y/N. "I have someone I want you to meet! I think you'll like him, he's very nice."
Behind her, Osano rolls his eyes, seeming to know who it is already. "Y/N, if it's who I think it is, you won't like him, trust me. He's like the opposite of me."
"Then I think we'll get along just fine." Taeko and her share a smile as they start to walk towards a brunette serving some sort of pastry. He was obviously in the cooking club, the president actually, with the band on his arm and the apron covering his uniform.
"Amao! Hey. This is my friend, Y/N, she just moved back here from America!" Taeko beamed at him, to which he shot her a soft smile back.
"Hello, Y/N. I'm Amao." His pale green eyes met Y/N's and he held out a hand for her to shake. She willingly does, both of her hands clasping one of his.
"I'm Y/N, as you know. Taeko has texted me a bit about you. You work at your older sister's bakery right?" That wasn't technically a lie, Taeko had told Y/N about him but she never mentioned a name. That was quite a while ago and the h/c-ette knew Taeko had a bit of a memory problem, so that should have made perfect sense to her.
"Yes I do. I am also the president of the cooking club. Taeko's also told me about you as well. I have to say, you are just as beautiful as she described." 'Oh, so he's a sweetheart. This will be fun.'
Y/N glanced at Taeko, the latter blushing. "That was a long time ago, Amao." She looked down and fiddled with her sleeve.
"That doesn't change the facts. Anyways, Y/N, would you like an apple strudel?" He held out one for her to take, and she nodded. She quickly thanked him before eating the sweet dessert. A hand wrapped around Y/N's arm before she even got the chance to relish in the taste of apples.
"Do not eat food that strangers give to you. This is safety 101, how do you not know this?" Nemesis's raspy voice was suddenly extremely close to the girl's ear and she side-stepped out of his hold.
"Chill out, almost everyone on the roof has had one of these. It really is not that big of a deal," Y/N whispered back to him. Her head quickly turned back to Amao, who looked confused about the sudden appearance of the ravenette.
"I didn't know you had a boyfriend, Y/N." Amao looked a bit taken aback at his statement and he awkwardly turned his empty tray on its side, running one of his hands along the metal.
"No, he's not my boyfriend. I just met him today. We're both new students and have the same schedule, so we got along fast." 'Again, a partial truth.'
Nemesis nodded and coughed slightly. "I need to use the bathroom, but I'll see you next class, Y/N."
Y/N spoke for a little longer with Amao and Taeko, becoming more comfortable after Nemesis left. She and Amao discovered that they were in the same year and shared their fourth period, chemistry, together. They made a plan to walk to class together and for him to show her around during club time after school. Of course, she knew this school like the back of her hand but it wouldn't hurt to spend a little time with the baker boy. 'I might get food out of it and possibly someone to do things for me. Wow, that sounds manipulative.'
Unfortunately, the ending lunch bell sounded off before she could mentally defend herself.

While Amao and Y/N were walking through the crowds of bustling people, she found herself easily distracted by conversations near them. Whatever the baker boy was talking about was clearly not as interesting as what was happening around them, in Y/N's opinion. 'No offense to the guy, but he's not exactly my type; he's way too sweet for me.'
As they approached the science lab, evil cackling and rambling about a new experiment, along with a very loud thumping noise, rumbled through the hall. Coming closer to the door, Y/N noticed a blonde boy ramming into the door with his shoulder, a teacher next to him not doing anything.
"Come on, Kaga! It's only the first day of school!" The tan male pressed his forehead against the door, clearly worn out.
"Oh, no, not again," Amao sighed next to her, his shoulders slumping. "I was so excited for experiments too." Her hands gripped her bag nervously as she asked him what was happening. He looked at her dejectedly, "Kaga made a huge mess in the lab and it's a safety hazard because, you know, explosions and things. This happened twice last year, so I missed all of chemistry then too. I really need to catch up, science is my favorite subject after all."
Y/N was not very happy about this development, losing an opportunity to get to know her classmates better. 'Dissecting frogs and mixing chemicals in tight goggles and stuffy blue gloves always brings out the worst in people. I was really looking forward to that. Damn it, Kaga.'
The two both leaned against the wall near the door to make room for their classmates as Y/N asked Amao why he liked science so much. "Well, cooking is a type of science in its own way. If you have the slightest bit more of something, it could all get ruined. But they're both fun, in their own stress filled way. Plus, I have never had a horrible science teacher." Y/N looked at him, trying to analyze him, as he became flustered under her gaze. 'I can respect that. Didn't take him for a stress-lover, though.'
"That actually makes a lot of sense. I also really like science, but I don't exactly have a preference for classes. Except for math. I hate math. I pass it somehow, but gays can't really do math so..." She let her voice fade towards the end of her sentence but the brunette still managed to catch the end of her sentence.
"Wait, are you a lesbian? I was just wondering because, well, I'm bi. I'm completely accepting, don't worry." His hands faced her in an act of defense, his face paling.
"Don't worry, Pillsbury. I like both men and women. And whatever else." She elbowed him and they both shared a quiet laugh.
"Good to know we have something in common. Do you have a partner right now?" He looked around anxiously as the door was still not budging 'perhaps also anxious about something else', but the laughter had ceased.
"Not currently, no. I had a boyfriend in America, but he moved away so we broke up. I hate to say it but I didn't really like him anyways. Too athletic. He always wanted me to practice karate with him. I know a lot of moves to protect myself, but he asked me constantly. We weren't exactly the best match."
Amao rested his hand on her shoulder and smiled at her gently, "Hey, I get it. I mean, there was this girl I liked at the beginning of last year and she was really pretty, you know, but then I found out that she was a lesbian. We wouldn't have been the best match either. I guess I just have bad luck in relationships, I mean, the first person I fell for was a straight guy. It was so obvious too."
"Oh, Amao, I'm so sorry, I feel your pain. I actually liked this girl a bit ago. She and I are childhood friends, so it kind of came naturally to me. She's a lesbian too, but she never felt the same way as me."
"Oh, we're both a bit rough in these kinds of situations, I guess." He clearly had something else to say, but he was cut off by a teacher announcing that the science lab is off limits and that they had to spend time in the library while their teacher was dealing with a troublesome student, obviously Kaga. The group of students quickly started to make their way to the library and Y/N's eyes caught onto the blond boy from before who was trying to open the lab.
The h/c-ette felt a slight tug on her arm, "Come on, Y/N, all the good tables are going to be taken if we don't hurry up." She smiled back at him as they giggled, jogging through the halls.
When they made it to the library, a table was mostly open in the corner except for the boy Y/N was just looking at. 'How did he make it here that fast?'
A deep voice whispered in her ear, "That's Aso Rito. He's the head of the sports club." The girl squeaked as she jumped away from Nemesis, feigning surprise. She could tell he was there, his footsteps were loud and she saw him by the door.
"Don't sneak up on me like that!" She smacked his arm and huffed, striding towards the athletic boy. "Is this seat taken?" She pointed to the seat across from the blond.
He shook his head, a grin on his face. "Definitely not, it's always free for a pretty girl like you." He winked but his confident exterior smudged quickly. "And her boyfriend." Amao placed a hand on her shoulder as he stood next to Nemesis behind the girl. "Boyfriends?"
She waved her hand and laughed, "Nope, just friends. I'm Y/N L/N, by the way." She held my hand out to shake and he did, his expression brightening.
"Aso Rito. So you're single. Good to hear."
'And the audacity comes back with his good mood, because of course it does.'
"Don't even think about it, pretty boy." She sat down quickly, leaving the boys behind her to scramble for the seat next to her. Amao, who was closer to the chair, sat down first and Nemesis glared at him, pulling up a chair to the end of the table between Aso and Y/N. "What was going on with that Kaga guy? He seems a bit out of it, judging from what I've heard from Amao."
"Oh, him? He's just the mad scientist type. I don't know exactly what's up with him, but I've heard his parents weren't the best for him growing up. Kind of made him a bit..." he gestured to the side of his head, making a circle with his index finger.
"Aso, that's not very nice!" Amao shot him a look, signaling to stop. 'I should've known they would know each other, given that they're both club leaders. And the fact that everyone here knows each other except for me and Nemesis.'
"Yeah, yeah, Pillsbury. Sorry, I'll work on it." Aso scratched the back of his neck sheepishly, eyebrows furrowing.
"Wait, she also called me Pillsbury like ten minutes ago..." The brunette's eyes darted between Aso and the girl suspiciously. "Y/N, how do you both call me that? That's a bit weird."
"Because you're the dough boy, obviously," Aso grinned, causing Amao to playfully roll his eyes.
"How dare you? Y/N, don't talk to this guy. You see how he treats me?" Amao nudged her and smiled, causing her cheeks to flush slightly.
Aso crossed his toned arms and blew hair out of his face. "I take offense to that. You're already gatekeeping the new girl and it's her first day. This is so rude."
"I don't think Amao could gatekeep me if he tried. I'm too powerful." The three of them shared a laugh, Nemesis sitting awkwardly by them.
"Sorry, uh, I didn't catch your name, dude." Nemesis glared at the track star and sighed, ignoring him.
"His name is Nemesis, he's my friend, he just doesn't know it yet. He's the other new student so we started talking, well, more like I spoke to him. He doesn't talk much, if you couldn't tell."
Nemesis seemed content with that explanation, as did Aso and Amao. In the first moment of quiet at their table, a manicured nail tapped Y/N's shoulder.
"You're Y/N, right?" A slightly valley girl-esque feminine voice questioned from behind her. The mentioned girl turned around in her seat and smiled, confirming the blonde's suspicions. The tan girl beamed at her, taking Y/N's chin in her hand and tilting it upwards. "You're in my botany class! You left in the first ten minutes. And oh my god girl, you're gorgeous! What's your skin routine? Wait no, nevermind, tell me about that later. For now, will you sit with me for like the next thirteen minutes before class ends? All my friends are gone and you're so pretty. Plus I think you need a good girlfriend, not just guys."
"Thank goodness, please save me. The testosterone is suffocating." They both laughed as Y/N got up and grabbed her bag, both of the unknown girl's hands intertwining with hers. Behind her back, Amao's smile was a bit thin and Aso glared at the gyaru in disgust.
"Cool, now let's go!" She started to pull Y/N toward the table she was sitting at earlier, making the e/c eyed girl say goodbye to her friends as fast as possible.
"Uhm, bye, Aso. I'll see you after school, Amao. See you in English, Nemesis." She and the blonde rushed off, letting Amao tuck in her chair as she waved.
"I'm Musume, by the way. We're going to be best friends, I can just feel it." She grinned at Y/N and they sat down side by side in front of a girl with teal hair and one with purple hair.
"I would hope so, I mean you did just drag me from my other friends."
"About the whole 'I don't have friends in this class', yeah, I lied. Meet Saki and Kokona." She gestured to the girls across from them.
"Omg, Y/N!!" They both squealed. "I've missed you so much! I need your phone number now," Saki exclaimed. The two girls looked excitedly at her. Y/N knew them when they were kids, before she moved away. She wasn't as close to them as she was to Osano and Taeko, of course, but they were still friends.
All four girls continued to talk throughout the rest of the class period. Even when the bell dismissed them, Saki and Kokona walked Y/N to English and she learned a lot of new things about these people at Akademi.
'Maybe chemistry getting canceled isn't so bad after all.'
