Fighting Climate Change / Global Warming: Limit Your Electricity Usage or Switch to Renewable Energy
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
Electricity and heat are generated by steam pushing against a turbine, causing it to rotate.  When the turbine rotates, it causes a magnet to move within the generator’s coil, creating an electric charge. A large amount of electricity production worldwide and the most common source is dependant on creating steam by burning fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas. But, according to the first law of thermodynamics, matter can’t be destroyed, only turned into something else. When fossil fuels are burned, a massive amount of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is produced and released into the atmosphere. As mentioned, the more greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, the thicker the heat trapping layer around our planet gets, leading to further warming of the planet. Almost half of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions come from electricity and heat production.

How Much Carbon Dioxide is Produced from Fossil Fuels?
To put the following numbers into perspective, according to WorldData, Canada uses roughly 522.20 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year. This is supported by the Government of Canada’s recorded number back in 2016 of around 486.33 billion kilowatt hours.
COAL
Coal is by far the worst offender for the production of greenhouse gases and is the leading cause of global warming and climate change in the electricity industry. Its complete carbon footprint, including its manufacture, installation, maintenance and removal, has coal belching out a staggering 2.16 – 3.6 pounds of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour.
To add to this impact, coal mining frequently releases trapped pockets of methane, another very powerful greenhouse gas, that had been sealed in place along with the coal, further adding to the suffocating greenhouse gas net around out planet. A study done by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that approximately 0.0042 pounds of methane is released for every kilogram of surface mined coal and 0.0093 pounds per kilogram of underground mined coal. Some sources say that coal mining releases as much as 10% of U.S methane emissions, making it the fourth largest source of methane. That may not seem like a lot, but methane is a 34 times more powerful heat trapping gas than carbon dioxide, making it’s damage to our Earth’s climate more immediate and severe.
CRUDE OIL / PETROLEUM
Using petroleum / crude oil to generate electricity is only minimally better than coal. The life-cycle of petroleum / crude oil use in the electricity industry, including mining, transportation and delivery, maintenance and decommissioning, emits an estimated 1.85 pounds (840 grams) of carbon dioxide per kilowatt hour, making it the second largest contributor of carbon emissions from power sources beside coal. Apart from the hazardous impacts on wildlife, human health and the local environment, oil extraction also releases trapped bubbles of methane, which some scientists estimate may exceed methane emissions from cows and livestock worldwide (refer to “How much Methane Does Livestock Produce?”).
NATURAL GAS
While natural gas may emit only half the carbon emissions of coal, it is by no means a solution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The number does vary between studies, but even the most advanced natural gas power plants still pump out between 0.4 – 1 pounds of carbon dioxide per kilowatt hour of electricity. That is still a massive contribution to climate change.
Natural gas also has another role in contributing to climate change. Natural gas is mostly made of methane. Methane may have a shorter lifespan than carbon dioxide, but, as mentioned, it is roughly 34 times more heat trapping. Unburned methane, if leaked during the extraction, production or transportation processes (i.e. mining, refining, delivery by pipeline or truck), releases this extremely powerful greenhouse gas into the atmosphere, adding to the heat trapping net around our planet. Most studies show that the leakage rate is at least 3% and possibly higher per extraction.
  Why do People Rely so Heavily on Fossil Fuels?
For most of the past century, fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, have been abundant and easy to extract, making them a cheap and simple way to meet the growing electricity demand worldwide. None are location dependant such as wind or solar power and don’t rely on weather or naturally occurring events. For these reasons and despite their impact on the climate and human health, fossil fuels have been a more appealing option, which is why they is still being widely and indiscriminately used, and principally why our planet is on the brink of its own destruction.
To make matters worse, some countries are now replacing aging nuclear power plants with natural gas ones, because natural gas has a lower carbon footprint than coal, and nuclear power plants can pose great risks if they fail. Such was the case for Chernobyl and more recently Fukushima. While most people will agreed that nuclear power is not the best alternative power source due to potential safety concerns, nuclear has no carbon footprint from electricity production while natural gas does. This means the amount of carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere is actually increasing with this change.
WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT #1: Switch to Renewable Energy Sources
What is a Renewable Energy Source?
A renewable energy source is source of electricity derived from natural sources or that generates power sustainably, in a way that doesn’t deplete the source faster than it can replace itself. Sustainability means the source will never run out and will do little or no damage to the planet. Fossil fuels take millions of years to form and, therefore, will not be restocked at the rate humans consume them, making them a non-renewable and unsustainable source. Oil and gas industries have now even acknowledged that oil is running out. Several places around the world are already switching to renewable sources such as solar and wind power, but many still depend heavily on fossil fuels.

Why are Renewable Energy Sources Better for the Environment?
As mentioned, renewable energy sources are derived from natural sources and events, such and wind and solar. This means no harmful fuels are burned during energy production, resulting in no emissions of carbon dioxide or methane into the atmosphere that would contribute to global warming. There is a small amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced in the manufacturing, transportation of materials, installation, maintenance and decommissioning of renewable energy sources, but the impact is minimal compared to fossil fuels, and once installed, they produce no carbon emissions during operation.
What are Some Renewable Energy Sources Available?
HYDRO POWER
Hydro power, alongside solar power, is currently the leading renewable energy source in the world. In fact, it is the most common renewable energy source in Canada, making the country the world’s third largest hydro power producer. Hydro power depends on the power of flowing water to create electricity. The natural flow of water is harnessed by damming waterways, or by using already naturally occurring waterfalls to rotate turbines and produce electricity. The simplicity and clean operation of hydro power plants make them a preferred alternative green power source.
SOLAR POWER
Solar power relies on the natural energy of the sun to produce electricity. Two technologies harness solar energy: solar photovoltaic converts sunlight to direct current electricity using semiconductors,  while, solar thermal uses solar panels to capture the sun’s heat to produce steam, which is then used to rotate the turbine. Large solar power plants are being constructed around the world to meet community demands. Solar panels are also being installed directly on buildings or in farmer’s fields to provide stand alone energy sources for residents.
WIND POWER
Wind power, as its name suggests, uses the naturally occurring wind as a power source to produce electricity. Wind turbines themselves are actually the turbine that rotates to create energy. It’s the best practice to only use the electricity you really need, even when using renewable energy sources. But it’s even more crucial when the electricity you use is still generated from fossil fuels. Adopting these simple habits may seem insignificant, but every kilowatt of power saved means that fewer pounds of carbon dioxide are being released into the atmosphere. Every little bit helps. Here are a few habits to try:
1.       If you plan to leave a room for longer than a few minutes, remember to turn off the lights you were using. Leaving them on when they’re not being used wastes electricity.
2.       Try working with less light; don’t strain your eyes, or work in the dark but try to only use the amount of light you really need. If you can manage with one less light, turn it off.
3.       When finished with any kind of electronic device, such as your laptop or the television, or if you’re not going to use it for a long time, turn it off or put it to sleep. Electronic devices use more power than lights and, therefore, shouldn’t be left on excessively. To save extra power, you can even unplug any appliances, electronics or lights at the end of the day before bed. Even if an electronic device, appliance or light is off, it’s still drawing a small amount of power from outlets, keeping itself ready for use.
4.       Instead of raising the heat in your home when the weather turns cold, reach for sweaters. Everyone enjoys staying warm, but if you can, try turning down the heat in your house a degree or two.
5.       Before buying a new appliance or electronic device, do a bit of research into their energy efficiency. If you can, try to find the ones that have the best environmental ratings and lowest power consumption.
6.       Wash your clothes in cold water. Warm water requires natural gas or electricity to heat it, cold water does not. Washing clothes in cold water is just as effective as washing in warm water and conserves energy.
7.       Try to limit the use of your dryer. Dryers require natural gas or electricity to dry your clothes. If you have enough space, buy a clothes rack or even set up a clothesline to air dry your clothes.
