Toxic Filipino work attitudes endanger every freelancing career. These are traits that you need to change to ensure effectiveness and having long term clients.

Freelancers must enlighten on what needs to change. And,  freelancers must own the right mindset, right character, and must have excellent work ethics for their freelancing career to thrive.

Some of these toxic Filipino work attitudes that we bring into our #freelancing are:

1. Tardiness (Always late)

One of the Filipino toxic attitudes is always being late. To be late is not good when you’re working online because it shows that you’re not committed. When you agree to the appointment, that means that you have to deliver before or on time.

A great way to avoid failing when delivering tasks is to always have a checklist. Otherwise, your whole day will be a waste if you will not track your responsibilities. Having no plan means your planning to fail, so you need to change it because it will become your lifestyle. And having this lifestyle will hinder you to become a successful freelancer.

Moreover, time management is the key to avoid delivering your output late. It’s because when you list down all your plans and you track them, you can see your priorities for the day.

2. Inferiority Outlook

Inferiority outlook is another toxic Filipino attitude that will keep you away from success. Having this attitude means you are afraid and lack confidence. We Filipinos got this attitude from the colonization period.

We always think that we are lesser than we should be confident about. But, this is not true because Filipinos are known as hardworking and great in communication skills, they’re motivated and have good work ethics.

What you need to do to avoid this toxic attitude is to change your mindset of who you are, attend training, mind setting and mentoring in order to be confident not just in your freelancing career but also to your personal life. You are the most person who knows you, thus, believe in yourself and be persistent.

3. Shame and Blame Attitude

Shame and blame attitude is also a toxic Filipino attitude that hinders a freelancer to become successful. When something goes wrong, you always blame other people because you don’t want to be accused of everything. You want to project as a good and nice freelancer.

What you need to do to change this, all you need is to be responsible when you commit mistakes and deal with them. Having mistakes is part of the process and in those mistakes, you will grow by learning. You need to stop seeing yourself as perfect, check on yourself first and improve.

It’s really about your mindset, in anything in life, look at yourself and determine why and how to improve your work as a freelancer.

4. Juan Tamad Character (Laziness)

Juan Tamad Character is famous in the country and oftentimes a lot of people are not doing anything but, they’re expecting something productive to happen. This is a toxic Filipino work attitude where someone is dreaming to be successful while not thriving. When you are a freelancer, no ones gonna pay for you if you’re not doing anything.

And, it’s not gonna be an overnight success, you need to thrive, work hard, and experience the process so that you will be resilient when you experience struggles.

From the learning perspective, you need to create something, there should be output and proper work ethics. Also, the mindset should be changed as well as the character.

5. Cinderella Mindset

Freelancers who have a “Cinderella Mindset” want to have “overnight success.” Many believe that working from home is just lying on the couch while earning big. This is not true because working from home requires full dedication and commitment, not just waiting for the off-time but, it focuses on the value that you will provide to your clients.

If you don’t produce you don’t get paid and eventually will get fired. You’re gonna feel sleepy, tired when you’re a freelancer but it’s better because you can work at home and you can choose your contracts.

For those freelancers who are not going through the process, not growing, learning and fixing any problems encountered, they will never reach success.

I hope the five mentioned Filipino toxic attitudes encourage you to omit these on yourself right now and start to change your mindset.

In working, it develops your character and integrity. Your freelancing career will not die because you go through the process, there are processes and development that you will experience. Therefore, you will never take your hardships in freelancing for granted.
