Photorealistic Procedural Materials in Substance Designer with Daniel Thiger

Velmi zajímává přednáška z GDC v rámci tzv. Substance Day. Daniel Thiger se zde pouští do tématu tvorby procedurálních materiálů a poskytuje vhled do postupu jakým zpracovával sérii materiálů pro projekt Signature Series.

1) Cíl projektu U každého projektu je důležité si uvědomit čeho chceme dosáhnout.

2) Reference a rozbor scény Sběr referencí je důležitý pro vytvoření si představy o tom co vlastně děláme a k inspiraci. Reference mohou být obyčejné fotografie nebo i 3d scany. 3D scany nabízí mnohem více výhod (předem zpracované textury, možnost vidět povrch v trojrozměrném prostoru...) a proto jsou ideální pro procedurální tvorbu. Pro filtrování důležitosti textur je dobré mít fotografii nebo concept art scény kde budou použity a tu potom rozložit na základní prvky.

3) Analýza referencí Když víme co budeme tvořit je potřeba si naplánovat kroky a rozebrat si reference jednotlivých částí scény na základní prvky. Při tvorbě procedurálních materiálů jsou to:

- tvary - velké, střední a malé

- výškové rozdíly povrchu

- komponenty (detaily jako listí, tráva, kamínky...)

Sirius is on high alert, eyes darting between all his friends, desperate to get in on the secret. “What does she mean, holding a torch?”

Regulus sniffs. “None of your business.”

But Sirius isn’t done. “What, so you used to fancy James or something?”

Silence. 

His eyes widen. “More than fancied James?”

If possible, a more silent silence. 

Sirius gasps and jabs his index finger at Regulus. “You snogged my friend!”

“Yes,” Regulus says dryly. His eyes wander over to Remus, then back to Sirius. “Gosh, I wonder what that feels like.” 

“He gave him a handjob, too,” Marlene pips up, and she ducks just in time.

Also, for anyone who missed it, I finished the Uberfic.

I'm no good at this publicising lark, but it did take me 10 months (plus a year) so I suppose I should try. Read it if you like slow burn and multi PoV fics. It's quite long.

I just think the different character arcs would lend themselves well to little episodes and it's quite visual so it would be so much fun!

love the new chapter !!!! I recently stalked ur Tumblr and seeing wnwtc as something you thought you’d never finish, become something that’s almost finished (can’t believe there’s only 2 more chapters !!!!) was such a delight. This fic has truly been amazing and I can’t wait to reread once it’s all done :)

Remus clears his throat. “I spoke to Gabriel.” 

They don’t do this. They don’t talk about personal matters in a work setting.

“I thought it only fair to properly talk things through with him, tell him where my head is at. I didn’t want to leave him hanging, you know? After he put himself out there so readily.” 

“What did you say?”

“I thanked him. And said that I wished him every happiness. But I told him I can’t be the one to do that for him.”

Sirius, Remus suspects, is trying to appear nonchalant. But there is a twitch to his eye that gives him away. “And what did he say?”

“I think he knew it was coming. Obviously, it had been a few weeks, so I’d probably have said something by now if the answer was going to be-” He swallows. “He asked if it was because of you.”

“Oh. And how did you answer that?” 

Remus’s cheeks are hot. But he wants to be honest. “I said it wasn’t not because of you,” he says. 

“Oh,” Sirius says, and when he thinks Remus isn’t looking, he permits a smile to dominate his lovely face. “Right, then.”

“It’s a bit tricky. We were looking at prams and my budget was, like, three-hundred pounds. He was getting really excited about these ergonomic, ultra-fancy ones and I felt like I was really raining on his parade when I told him that the budget wouldn’t stretch. To him, it’s pennies. To me, it’s two months’ rent.”

“He shouldn’t make you feel bad about the fact you’re not as wealthy as he is.”

“He doesn’t! Of course he doesn’t! He’s the loveliest, most understanding person in the world. But I kind of feel like the bad guy because I’m not letting him splash out on his son. Already! And he's not even been born yet! It’s silly, but I’m a bit worried about what all this means for how it’s going to go; this co-parenting thing. A lifetime of the kid getting to go on holiday with his dad to Florida or something, and all I can afford is a campsite in Wales with a toilet that may or may not flush.” 

“Campsites all have flushing toilets, Lily. You’re being hysterical.” 

“And I won’t feel like I’m allowed to invite James on the shitty little holiday, even though I’d like him to be there and the kid will almost certainly want him to be there. But it’s so bloody complicated. And to add insult to injury, I’ll probably fancy him forever, even though we're not together.”

“Oh, babe.” 

“Won’t be together. He’ll meet some lovely woman who’s actually ready to love him properly. And I’ll just love him wonkily. Badly. Clumsily, while he gets married and does it all much more cleanly with someone else.”

Sunday snip

Remus just looks at him, lip curled in unusual cruelty. “No. You don’t get to do that now,” he says, and Marlene feels the chill to the words like a sudden frigid breeze. It isn’t like Remus to be so cutting. Maybe Sirius is the exception to his usual even temper; his line that won’t be crossed. 

Funny how only months ago, Remus couldn’t abide him. Funny to watch affection swell and ripen between them. Funny to see Remus dash it on the rocks out of sheer stubbornness when it might have been something wonderful. 

And by funny, she means futile and heartbreaking, of course.

u have such a way with characters that just makes them feel so complex and real and are so so enjoyable to get to know. honestly they all have such distinct voices it genuinely feels like three different people have written each chapter it is insane.

also I am completely in love with marlene. she's always been my favourite of your more side characters but she has risen those ranks faster than I could even process it. I'm SO excited for her and dorcas she deserves all the love and affection ever

Can you all feel me blushing over here? Because I am. You're so so kind, thank you! Writing Marlene is honestly the most fun thing ever, and she's probably second only to Sirius when it comes to how easy I find it to summon her voice to the page!
