AstraZeneca said on Tuesday it had initiated the worldwide withdrawal of its COVID-19 vaccine due to a "surplus of available updated vaccines" since the pandemic. The company also said it would proceed to withdraw the vaccine Vaxzevria's marketing authorizations within Europe. "As multiple, variant COVID-19 vaccines have since been developed there is a surplus of available updated vaccines," the company said, adding that this had led to a decline in demand for Vaxzevria, which is no longer being manufactured or supplied.

THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY is quietly broadening its efforts to curb speech it considers dangerous, an investigation by The Intercept has found. Years of internal DHS memos, emails, and documents — obtained via leaks and an ongoing lawsuit, as well as public documents — illustrate an expansive effort by the agency to influence tech platforms.

The work, much of which remains unknown to the American public, came into clearer view earlier this year when DHS announced a new “Disinformation Governance Board”: a panel designed to police misinformation (false information spread unintentionally), disinformation (false information spread intentionally), and malinformation (factual information shared, typically out of context, with harmful intent) that allegedly threatens U.S. interests. While the board was widely ridiculed, immediately scaled back, and then shut down within a few months, other initiatives are underway as DHS pivots to monitoring social media now that its original mandate — the war on terror — has been wound down.[...]

“Platforms have got to get comfortable with gov’t. It’s really interesting how hesitant they remain,” Microsoft executive Matt Masterson, a former DHS official, texted Jen Easterly, a DHS director, in February.

In a March meeting, Laura Dehmlow, an FBI official, warned that the threat of subversive information on social media could undermine support for the U.S. government. Dehmlow, according to notes of the discussion attended by senior executives from Twitter and JPMorgan Chase, stressed that “we need a media infrastructure that is held accountable.”[...]

According to a draft copy of DHS’s Quadrennial Homeland Security Review, DHS’s capstone report outlining the department’s strategy and priorities in the coming years, the department plans to target “inaccurate information” on a wide range of topics, including “the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic and the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines, racial justice, U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the nature of U.S. support to Ukraine.”

“The challenge is particularly acute in marginalized communities,” the report states, “which are often the targets of false or misleading information, such as false information on voting procedures targeting people of color.”[...]

In June, the same DHS advisory committee of CISA — which includes Twitter head of legal policy, trust, and safety Vijaya Gadde and University of Washington professor Kate Starbird — drafted a report to the CISA director calling for an expansive role for the agency in shaping the “information ecosystem.”[...]

DHS’s expansion into misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation represents an important strategic retooling for the agency, which was founded in 2002 in response to the 9/11 attacks as a bulwark to coordinate intelligence and security operations across the government. At the same time, the FBI deployed thousands of agents to focus on counterterrorism efforts, through building informant networks and intelligence operations designed to prevent similar attacks.[...]

The subsequent military defeat of ISIS forces in Syria and Iraq, along with the withdrawal from Afghanistan, left the homeland security apparatus without a target. Meanwhile, a new threat entered the discourse. The allegation that Russian agents had seeded disinformation on Facebook that tipped the 2016 election toward Donald Trump resulted in the FBI forming the Foreign Influence Task Force, a team devoted to preventing foreign meddling in American elections.

The return of Luís Inácio Lula da Silva as president represents an opportunity for Brazil to rebuild its public health system (SUS) and resume its leadership in global health, relaunching cooperation with the global south. However, President Lula will face even greater challenges than those in his previous presidency (2002-10), considering that Brazilian public health was recently described by experts as “scorched earth.”1

Since 2016, the national health services have experienced relentless cuts in public funding. This has led to substantial decreases in the number of services provided by SUS, an increase in indicators of child malnutrition and maternal deaths, and the downgrading or withdrawal of successful programmes such as people’s pharmacies, community health agents, and the response to HIV/AIDS.2

One of the most disturbing examples of the decay is the Brazilian national immunisation programme.3 After nearly half a century of progress, vaccination coverage of the population, including all World Health Organization recommended vaccines, dropped from 73% in 2019 to 67% in 2020 and 59% in 2021, far from the desirable level of 95%.4 The childhood vaccination rate fell from 93.1% in 2019 to 71.5% in 2021, placing Brazil among the countries with the lowest coverage in the world.5

Another important challenge was the devasting effect of covid-19 in Brazil with nearly 700 000 deaths and more than 36 million reported cases since early 2020.6 The botched federal response included official recommendations of ineffective treatments such as chloroquine and ivermectin, delay in purchasing vaccines, the boycott of public health measures adopted by local governments, and the wide dissemination of fake news by public agencies.7 The previous president, Jair Bolsonaro, even disseminated false associations between covid-19 vaccines and HIV, and between wearing masks and pneumonia.8 In his inauguration speech on 1 January 2023, Lula stated that “the responsibilities for this genocide must be investigated and must not go unpunished” following due process and a broad right of defence. 9

Despite the ministry of health’s historical importance as head of the SUS, controlling resources for more than 5000 municipalities, technical staff were replaced by military personnel, and health policies were guided by ideological and religious principles rather than scientific evidence during the covid pandemic.

CNN reported in January that at least 20 of the 22 hospitals in northern Gaza had been damaged or destroyed within the first 60 days after October 7, and even by December 21, WHO claimed that Northern Gaza had no functioning hospitals and patients were “waiting to die.” WHO also reported in March that Israel has conducted over 400 attacks on healthcare systems and personnel, killing at least 500 healthcare workers and detaining many more according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The BBC reported Israeli Palestinian healthcare workers being “blindfolded, detained, forced to strip and repeatedly beaten by Israeli troops after a raid at their hospital.” The International Rescue Committee has expressed concerned regarding reports of mass graves found at Nasser and Al-Shifa Hospitals following Israeli military withdrawal.

As we discussed with public health expert Dr. Sadaath Sayeed, systems of public health in a given country are integrated into its economic and political stability. Dr, Sayeed specifically looks at climate change, but his analysis of countries in the global south, and those who have been exploited economically, politically, or otherwise. An even minimally functional healthcare system is necessary for a population to survive. Based on this, these clear attacks on Palestinian healthcare are a clear sign of genocide. As we’ve discussed in global scholars, the Geneva Convention defines genocide as:

Genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

a. Killing members of the group

b. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group

c. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part

d. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group

e. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

There is no doubt that beyond simply killing Palestinians – Israel has killed over 35 THOUSAND, more than 5% of Gaza’s population – an attack on medical systems is an attack on “conditions of life calculated to bring about … physical destruction.” Additionally, pregnant women are increasingly disabled from accessing food, water, medical care, and sanitary environments, leading to an intense spike in stillbirths and newborn complications, labor-related illness and death, and malnutrition, which is evidence of an assault on “births within the group.” In contrast, Israeli hospitals are taking advantage of wartime funding to increase a focus on innovation with Israeli tech startups, reflective of how, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Israel had some of the earliest distribution of vaccinations.

Palestines lack of health care is actively contributing to its extreme and complete destruction. It is a sign that anyone like myself who hopes to head into the healthcare realm must question the idea of medical progress and innovation, and must consider the weaponization of healthcare access that can bolster power while killing entire populations.

AstraZeneca withdraws COVID-19 vaccine globally due to falling demand

Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca stated on Tuesday, May 7, that it had initiated a worldwide withdrawal of its COVID-19 vaccine due to a “surplus of available updated vaccines.”

The company began developing a respiratory syncytial virus vaccine and obesity drugs last year following a slowdown in growth amid declining sales of its COVID-19 drug.
