#with all the presidential posts i've been making was longing to write a story with a political aspect

Of course the sequel to Out of the Tomb would be a vocation story. Tanza's let go of sin and embraced virtue. Naturally, the next part of her story would involve her figuring out what she's going to do with her particular gifts and interests. Especially if what she should do doesn't necessarily line up with what she'd want to do if given the choice. With all the crazy political stuff bringing in questions of duty and image and danger, it's the perfect fit. I can't believe I didn't figure it out before.
#adventures in writing#arateph#i hesitate to actually write this story#too often a sequel can ruin a story#and it's been far too long for me to have an audience for it#yet#i've finally arranged these pieces into a coherent story#figured out how to integrate the personal and the political#figured out how to make the fairy tale fit in well#figured out what she'd do in the flabby middle part of the story#(and it's something that makes me really excited on a theme and worldbuilding level)#and now the discussion of christian character arcs brought this to mind again#and it could be *so* intriguing#with all the presidential posts i've been making was longing to write a story with a political aspect#and then remembered i've got a whole universe with the craziest political situation#and an every(wo)man hero who wants nothing to do with it but still gets caught up in it#i could write all sorts of crazy meta posts about arateph's post-auren-resurrection politics#there are so many big issues tied up in this one person and how does he handle that???#just want to keyboard smash about my own characters#i was content with leaving this universe behind but every time i think that it bludgeons me from behind#and this is the first time i think i have a story that's worthwhile as a retelling *and* a standalone arc#and i don't know what to do with it#(probably wait 2.5 days for the feeling to pass)#but if anyone's up for me yelling in their dms please let me know#(i never know whether to post these types of things on this blog or the writing blog)#(but i figured i've talked enough about arateph on the main blog to put it here)#(there's an intricate calculus behind these decisions apparently)#(for better or worse this doesn't feel like a writing blog post)

Hey! I’m studying journalism at the moment and have also been wondering if this drama is going to get media coverage. I’d guess a few entertainment journalists are interested and have maybe even tried to work on stories but found the whole situation kind of unwieldy and hard to summarise and source. The stories that have got coverage (j2 fallout, Clinton article) are easy to source (actors tweets, articles from respected publications) and simple for outsiders to understand without knowing 1/2
Tumblr media
First off I'm gonna preface with that it's 3am currently as I'm starting and I know I'm tired and not running on all brain cells so please be gentle if I make any errors spelling wise or logic wise.
Also here's the post anon is referencing.
Anon, thank you very much for msging me. It feels really nice knowing that I'm not the only one wondering what's going on here. I honestly thought the day after 15x18 aired that it would be a massive news story. Supernatural does get attention from EW and awards run on fan votes. Never mind it had the spotlight for being on TV 15years, it was close to wrapping up, and they actually green lit a massively popular (and award winning) ship. Therefore flipping 12 years of narrative on it's head because it actually was a slow burn romance as was speculated. AND as the icing on the top of the cake, it trended over one of the most important presidential elections ever.
How did nobody report on this? How did nobody point out that it's strange in this climate that the CW chose not to acknowledge any part of it that would have gotten them brownie points: LGBT rep, successful long term storytelling. [Granted it was also simultaneously a speed run in bury your gays - even though the narrative demanded more to the Empty plot which seemed to be cut - and I'm not even touching what this meant for Dean's character & sexuality - and the finale filming inconsistencies - All of these are also massively complex and worth digging into for a news story, but my mind is honing on specifically on the CW's problem with Castiel being gay tonight].
I've poked around a bit further than just relying on my memory. The stories that got coverage were: j2 fall out (although the ones I looked at missed the tweet at Robbie), Clinton, the Oscars, the prequel, and the rogue translator. (And I did find one website I've never heard of before did a small write up on the Valentine's Day Wedding)
Although I'd like to point out that (and I could be dead wrong) if I remember correctly the inside scoop on the j2 fall out reconciliation statement from Jared came from a planned interview for Walker promotion. And for the rogue translator mess, where Misha was suddenly in a pr nightmare, of course that's what got EW coverage. But it still didn't push the topic especially after several other dubs came out and some used language that confirms romantic intent as others didn't. That should've been a bigger story in itself leading into the central issues of censorship and homophobia.
Everything else is non existent online unless you know specifically where to look. Which isn't great for anyone but the higher powers that want to sweep things under the rug.
You're 100% right we should look into making things more digestible for people with little to none knowledge of SPN. It's important to step back and remember that we're carrying years of complex knowledge. This is why the fandom as a whole can look like we're living in a different dimension.
Even still, it's baffling the lack of coverage for trending topics like the big pushes for #TheySilencedYou campaign which felt straight forward after a minute of scrolling through twitter. Jared's rant this weekend was trending like crazy. I saw transcripts and videos being pushed around. I've seen TMZ report on way less (and they've jumped on reporting about Jared's arrests before in the past.) Why nothing now? I keep waiting to see something. Anything.
Fingers crossed something does pop up. Or fans organize something especially after the bullshit with CE.

Favorite (historical) president? Favorite First Lady?
Favorite President
This is going to sound like such a basic answer, but I remain fascinated by Lincoln. Part of that is just that there's so much written about him and the Civil War that it's easy to find a lot of information about him from a lot of different angles, so you can get a much more in-depth picture of him than you can with most other presidents. But the place that he occupies in history is fascinating to me. You've got this long-standing complicated political landscape of Washington that splinters upon his election, but when he comes in, he's outside of all of that. He's the hick from the sticks and that winds up being a good thing because he doesn't have any history of political alliances or rivalries to navigate. He can just come in and do his thing, and he's good at it, because he's so good at handling people. He's humble enough to accept help, laughs off insults, and is confident enough to make mistakes and then try something new. He's rather too much of a politician sometimes--much more relativistic and willing to bend on moral issues than his reputation would have you believe (I sometimes want to go back in time and make Mr. Ends-Justify-the-Means read The Hunger Games)--but he also develops and grows and changes in such fascinating ways. Plus, the way he understands the world through storytelling and words and narrative is wonderful.
For less-basic answers, Chester Arthur still retains the prize for most fascinating character arc and I still sometimes have to resist the urge to chase people down and make them understand just how awesome his story is and to freak out over the Julia Sand letters with me.
Other presidents who come to mind a lot from the podcast (who I'm going to mention because I never have an excuse to bring them up) are
Zachary Taylor (because he was the first obscure president to catch my attention and because his story is the prequel to the Civil War)
James Garfield (prequel to Chester Arthur and just really fascinating guy)
Calvin Coolidge (mad respect for his budget cutting--I think about the economics portion of his episode of the podcast all the time)
Herbert Hoover (amazing guy whose talents could have done so much for the Depression if he hadn't been president at the time)
Harry Truman (because the little I know about him brings to mind Lincoln and Grant-like humility).
Favorite First Lady
I've been meaning to make a post about how fascinating the First Ladies are to me. I don't know as much about any of them as First Ladies as I would like (and intend to remedy that), but some of the ones who've most caught my attention as people are:
Lucretia Garfield, for her tangled love story with her husband, dedication to education, and the introverted nature that makes it honestly almost a blessing to her that she was only First Lady for a hundred days. (And because her letters are always excellent).
Julia Grant, not because I particularly like her (she's rather too blase about slavery and just flighty in general), but because she and her husband get the top prize for strongest presidential marriage--it's so cute how much they adored each other
Nancy Reagan, because the letters between her and Ronald are ridiculously corny and cute
Abigail Adams, because that woman was sharp (and she also writes good letters)
