Here’s the story.

I have been going back and forth about deleting my instagram account for the longest time. The furthest i had done prior deleting of cos, was to temporarily disable my account. Reasons being distraction during my uni days, one of them.

Have you ever posted a photo and constantly find yourself tracking the number of likes? Refreshing your feed? Uploaded a photo, got little likes and then deleted it? Felt pressured to get the perfect instagram pic of the day? Dependant on filters to make a pic look good and cover facial flaws?

Yup that was me.

Truth be told, instagram is never a real representation of our lives. Never has it been. It is so superficial because we tend to upload pics with good vibes. Seriously, no one feels perfect 24/7. Good vibes DON’T exist all the time. Admit it. We filter our bad days and only show the colourful side.

Let’s talk about esteem. I have always dealt with esteem issues. Yes i do 🙂 Tell me how many times you wished you were that girl on instagram getting tons of likes and compliments? I bet you have felt that once.

Experimenting on instagram just to get more likes. Sure it does feel great to gradually see your likes increasing as you experiment different editing apps and fashion styles. Felt compelled to perform on that level where u need to dress up to post an OOTD pic everytime you go out? I feel ya, girl!

It’s crazy how social media affected my life. It was the first thing i saw everyday when i woke up and the last before bed. Have you ever paused what you are doing just to snap for ig stories? Me 🙋🏻 guilty as heck. I would have enjoyed my meal to the fullest, for an instance if It wasn’t for ig stories. I did not appreciate my surrounding real time.

Now now, don’t get me wrong. I actually like instagram! Instagram’s a great platform to upload pics of my boyfriend and i. Being in a LDR, i feel instagram was doing us justice. Whenever we miss each other, we always scrolled through my feed. It was our memory bank ❤ Sure i could just see raw photos of us in my photo album instead. But, i prefer instagram! Why? Simply because my feed was concise. A single glance could tell stories of that exact moment in the photo. Instead of swiping through my photo album one photo each time. Too much effort just to reminisce good old times haha!

Back to why i am actually doing up my post, instagram is doing more harm than good. It’s great as a platform to showcase our lives but crazy how it controlled my life. I was never an obsessed instagrammer who uploads photo everyday. But it got me addicted.

It came to a point i knew i had to be off instagram. Knowing my feed held so much memories, i was hesitant to delete my account permanently. Slowly deleted followers off my list, making my account as private as possible. Then i deactivated. And i kept going back and forth deactivating and then activating my account just because i knew i could do that. Easy peasy! Soon i realized it was an unhealthy habit. If i really wanted to detox from social media, i should be off it completely. For life.

And here i am, after several failed attempts… I DID IT. I am officially done with instagram. Relieved, i was. It was as though something huge was lifted off my chest. I no longer need to think of what to wear for an instagram worthy pic, face esteem issues and i get to save my battery life and data 😂 Social media detox is real my friends. Have a go!
