Picturing a Phantom of the Paradise college AU with Winslow, Swan, Beef, and Phoenix in a flatshare or dorm at a very prestigious music college. Vocal training, music therapy, the fact that Swan at 18 is an “aging boy wonder” and still well-known enough that a lot of people don’t understand why he’s in school. Beef, the volatile, anti-authoritarian musician who doesn’t respect the curriculum or the existence of music school... but still applied and got in. Phoenix the aspiring soloist changed her name before any of them and is literally in every show on-campus and off. Winslow is the aloof, long-haired pianist they are all silently fighting over.

reading the phantom of the paradise screenplay. my observations so far:

seeing swan referred to as "dorian" is pretty disconcerting, I think it could have worked but I'm glad they went with the name they did because dorian just seems a BIT too on the nose

winslow was going to wear a black cape while he played the intermission originally... a proto-goth even before his accident

winslow TEARS THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER OFF THE WALL when philbin mentions the juicy fruits which is funny to me

apparently the death records office is (or was planned to be) in new york city, and winslow flew in specifically to see swan after not hearing from him. swan's mansion is also said to be a brownstone in central park! (EDIT: someone pointed out that sing sing is in new york as well, so we seem to have a lock on where most of the movie takes place!)

POTO adaptations analysis — Part 3 — The Phantom of the Paradise (1974), directed by Brian de Palma, starring Paul Willians, William Finley and Jessica Harper

this movie is a mix of Faust, The Phantom of the Opera and The Picture as a gothic/horror/comedy glamrock so you already know what to expect (and it was directed by Brian de Palma, the same dude who directed 1976's "Carrie")

Positive aspects (trying to not put the whole movie here):

– WHAT A FUCKING PHOTOGRAPHY, it barely looks like a 1970s movie fr

– WHAT A FUCKING SOUNDTRACK, no matter what genre plays during the movie it's so fucking iconic i love it 🥹

– Winslow Leach my beloved, aside from Erik Destler (Robert Englund) he's the best remade of original Erik we have, a little unhinged yet still pathetic and lovable

– Beef is ✨ICONIC✨ he SLAYS in gay 💅

– the figurine 🥹 omg what a fucking amazing techno-goth figurine

– the clips are so well made, the scene where Winslow rewrites his song for Phoenix while the red candle melts is probably my favorite

– Phoenix (our Christine/Marguerite) is so perfect and babygirl and girlboss iconic wonderful diva 💞

– AND, she and Winslow share the best platonic chemestry. I love them

– the mixt of tension, glamrock, comedy and tragedy are simpley perfect

– idk what's the meaning of this, but the characters are strangely related to birds: Swan, Phoenix and Winslow's mask

– speaking of mask, his design is PERFECT and it inspired Darth Vader's design (yes, Brian de Palma and George Lucas were friends and the POTP came out 2 years before Star Wars)

– as I said before, the movie mixes POTO, Faust and The Picture of Dorian Gray, in a perfect way ✨💅

– the movie also criticizes the music industry, with both Phoenix and other objectified women and the injustice that happens with Winslow Leach

– Swan is a hateful villain, but in a good way, he's also iconic and very well written (and acted)

– how the plot explores the paralels with Faust is so fantastic

– the scene where Winslow brings Phoenix to the rooftop looks like a reference to the 1925s POTO, where Erik as Red Death spies on Raoul and Christine

– Winslow's deformity is AWESOME

– the ending, tho tragic, gives Phoenix and Winslow the scene i wanted to see with Christine and Erik

Negative aspects:

– the scene where Winslow discovers the supernatural true about Swan and the deal he signed is kinda... convenient? Like, a hidden recording that explains the plot-twist? That's kinda of a scritp cheat

– i wish Phoenix had more scenes tho (she still slays)

Mmmmmmm ok so im very sorry folks, I meant to make some TCM content today but I got really busy and ended up not being at home so i didnt get a chance to make anything post worthy. rip... I will post some tho!! I'll make up for this i swear!! I'll finish stuff up so I can post it!!!! forgive me!

but uhhhh even tho today was busy, i did have a little bit of tequila when i was out in this evening after everything,,,, so when i did come home i actually just decided to rewatch Phantom of the Paradise instead of doing anything else like productive? (sorry again)

ive sobered up a little more now and i need to sleep but God damn man. it was so good to see the movie again. my husband was in disbelief the entire time. he both loved and hated it. he says it isnt a movie. I love the movie so much. the scene with The Phantom SPRINTING down the hall always kills me. it's such a raw shaky cam shot of him BOOKING IT i laugh so hard

and oh yeah,,, Winslow Leach. i love that tall nerd with the big blue eyes and thick-ass glasses and turtleneck sweater and fluffy hair!!! hes so fucking awkward and overly passionate and ugh! but also when he is the world's dorkiest goth bird man in the bodysuit with the black makeup im???? in love. im IN. love. i pretty much screamed in joy every time Winslow Leach was on screen bc I love that FUCKING DORK I LOVE HIM!!!! like why am I like this? why lmao

So um I just watched Phantom of the Paradise and like what the Hell was that? That movie is on so many drugs. Not to mention the entire cast being on drugs because it’s the 70s. Anyway, I really enjoyed it I would definitely rewatch. Also, I’ve decided Winslow is a goth bird and no one can tell me otherwise.

Okay hi !!!! DC sideblog bc I figured it'd be a good outlet for liveblogging and deep analysis essay type thoughts I've got !!!!!

I go by both Winslow and Jeremy, but most primarily know me as Jeremy!! I use he/they/vey/it pronouns!!! (If you're unfamiliar w/ vey pronouns, just imagine they/them pronouns but w/ a shitty Transylvanian accent) I'm shitty lil goofy trans gay goth in my early 20s that can talk your ear off given the chance, even if I can admittedly be a bit shy and aloof @ first !!!
