The Winselmutter near Grünhain

The so-called Oswalds brook flows near Grünhain. A ghostly shadow is said to scurry up and down around the midnight hour, constantly uttering tones of lamentation. The people call this the Winselmutter (whimper mother). They say that once a young man, whose lover had broken faith, ended his life in this stream, which was very deep and raging in many places. Although his tenderly loving mother had searched him for seven days most carefully, but could not find his body again and finally died of exhaustion and a broken heart. Her destiny is now, because she murmured against God's wise providence, having to search in vain for the body of her drowned son, constantly complaining and whining.
