Sauvignon Blanc Pouilly-Fumé Domaine Chatelain 2019 Score 89 Do you drink French Sav? Favourite Sav? NZ or French? Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre are France's top two expression of Sauvignon Blanc. They sit across from each other with the Loire river separating them in the east of the Loire Valley. Pouilly-Fumé is a little more subtle of the two. How it differs from its homeland of Bordeaux it is not blended with Semillon for a start, generally the better quality white wine from Bordeaux are blends like their reds. The bordeaux style is light and fruity with the loire more depth of fruit and herbs. Passaic Leognan style of Bordeaux’s famous left bank is rich and creamy. New Zealand more Gooseberry, Fresh cut grass, Green bell pepper and Jalapeno. The Loire and Bordeaux styles age considerably better than New Zealand too. This has an amazing freshness of balanced acidity and fruit. A real summers day wine with some complexity. Great with Salmon and chicken dishes. In my option Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre are the best Sav's you can buy. I do enjoy good quality styles of most types. Who says Sav cant be top wine? A facade of jelly donut masks grapefruit, squished bug and dirty baby diaper while mid-nose flabbiness agrees with the slight brick. All your barnyard dreams come alive as toasted coffee grounds enter and head down the shrill fruit path through straw, brick and wood, wet leather calving piercing shards of acidic electricity off the cherry iceberg and driving them into the sides of your tongue. Tin-can finish works bright patches around rust and scraps of chalky label, the licorice-bay edge is thoughtful, teetering on tertiary and beautiful. How much do you love Bien Nacido?!?! 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷 #@qupewines #qupewines #syrah #santamariavalley #biennacido #wine #santabarbara #winedork #winelove #redwine #soif

Sauvignon blanc Craggy Range Marlbourgh 2020 @waitroseandpartners Score 87 New Zealand's oldest working vineyard dates back to 1851 when French Catholic missionaries planted vines in hawkes bay. The first vines were planted in 1819. Brancott Estate started planting Sauvignon blanc in 1973, the country never looked back. All my life NZ has been known mainly for producing Sauvignon blanc but it wasn't until 2002 that it became NZ primary planted grape. It was Chardonnay until then, Martinborough in the North island makes world class Chardonnay to this day and Central Otago do the same with Pinot Noir but Sav is the big show in town. Two thirds of NZ wines are white and 58% of the country's wine is made Marlborough where Sav is king. Craggy Range does a beautiful crisp, clean and bright Sauvignon blanc. The perfect expression of what NZ Sav is all about. Beautiful Gooseberry, Citrus fruit, fresh cut grass and a little jalapeño spice. The structure of the wine is classic Sav, mouth watering acidity, light bodied and very refreshing. I really enjoyed this with some Lamb Tacos. Sangiovese Montemajone Chianti Classico 2018 @waitrose Score 84 Young Sangiovese has that beautiful pale ruby colour. A lot of red fruits and roast tomatoes straight away on the nose. Then the tertiary aromas of tabaco and espresso start come through with an Oregano flavour. You have a sip and the wine heats up on your tongue some sweet balsamic and as you breath out that classic Chianti roast tomato smell again. I get the feeling this could be an interesting wines in a few years stored away. Its not going to keep 10-20 years like Gran Seleziones but an interesting proposition for someone starting out to taste the development over a few years. The acidity is starting to mellow a little from the roaring levels found in very young Chianti Classico. It is this acidity in this wine which makes it perfect for that rich tuscan cuisine of game, slow cooked meats and beautiful ragu. Cabernet Sauvignon Journeys end Stellenboach 2016 @waitroseandpartners Score 90 South African Cabernet Sauvignon. A balance of old and new world wines. They have been making wine here for over 350 years. You can see the sea, vines and the mountains all at the same time. This wine on the eye looks to have turned from purple to ruby. The intensity on the eye is medium, a little strange for Cabernet. Strong black fruit on the nose with a little red currant and pencil shaving coming through. The style is definitely a cross between old and new. It is more structured like Middle Aged Bordeaux with it being jammy on the tongue like some of the new world styles.  The wine is developing well looking at the colour and from the flavour compounds. The wine will peek in the next three to five years. SA wines are having a lot of problems selling wine just now due to alcohol sales restrictions in south Africa @bws_brido made a good point about how important it was to back the SA wine industry. Pinot Noir @waitrose Blanc de Noirs Champagne NV Sacore 86 🥂Favourite Champagne house? 🥂Have you tried Blanc de Noir or Blanc de Blanc? 🥂 Is it an all year wine or special occasions? A beautiful wine with so much dept on the nose. Big hits of green fruit, sharp citrus, the classic biscuit character of Champagne and the sweet smell of brioche. Then on the palate, subtle red fruits from the classic flavour profile of Pinot Noir. The wine has so much freshness, the bubbles delicate with a comforting creamy richness on the palate. A little bit about the Blanc De Noir aspect of this Champagne, Basically When the Pinor Noir and Pinot Meunier Grapes have been picked they are pressed as they normal would be. They do not allow any maceration, removing skin contact from the grape juice. Riesling Cave De Beblenheim Alsace 2018 @Waitrose Score 89 🍇Have you tried dry Reisling? 🥂Are you drinking any French wines just now? 🍷Have you enjoyed any good wines recently? A good dry Riesling from Alsace or Mosal there are not a lot of nicer wines to smell. “Wine should be refreshing first and foremost”Jancis Robinson. I am a champion of Alsace DRY Riesling. The smells are amazing, you pour it and immediately a Petrol or Gasoline smell. This is still developing and is more Gasoline in a good way like the petrol station forecourt but straight away it has a back bone with Citrus Lemon and Orange. The wine is a very acidic wine and you get the minerality coming through you can smell that. a few swirels of the glass then the tropical fruit really starts to come through. The longer it lies in the glass other aspects like honey start to jump out. One taste of the wine it's Dry and it is High. No sweetness and mouth water acidity which makes this wine go with so many foods. The wine has great balance even with the high acidity. The taste of the wine is pronounced with a very good finish. It is very well structured a little toffee too. Definitely one not to cold just a little chill in it. I had a dry curry beef rendang that went well with the Riesling. Grenache, Syrah & Carignan Paul Mas 2019 @waitroseandpartners Score 84 🍷Have you tried much Languedoc wine? 🍇What good ones have you had? Before the EU cash for vines scheme. This area of France just above Spain was known as Europe wine lake. I think that wine from this area can be really good but it is really all down to producer. This wine is governed by AOP regulations A lot of producers for better or worst the gloves are of and they grown what they want. The Languedoc can be a little like Puglia wines in southern Italy where the style can lean more to the new world wine producers. This wine totally express the best thing about the area big red fruit with a blend of some of these non native varietals Grenache (garnacha or Garnatxa) Carignan (Cariñena) Mourvèdre (Monastrell) 3 native spanish grapes, Syrah from the Rhone and possible native Cinsault (Which maybe came from the middle east a long long time ago) The wines from the area can carry a wide verity of names regions and classifications so this why I say producer really matters. A great value wine when it comes on sale at Waitrose. It is a very tasty wee number, really well balanced wine with lovely hits of black and red fruit with a bit of spice. 14% alcohol but very well balanced and well made by a top Languadoc producer. Once it opens up you some nice red fruit Strawberries and Raspberry come through on the palate. Pinot Noir Louis Latour red Burgundy 2019 Score 87 🍷Do you enjoy Pinot? 🍷 Whats your favourite Pinot Noir? 🍷What regions have you tried? Another classic from Louis Latour, grown on the Clay and Limestone vines off Burgundy.  This grape is native to Burgundy. Pinot Noir only grows in a certain growing condition, the grapes are hand picked and it takes a great deal of skill to grow. I have tasted some top class Pinot Noir from Central Otago and Oregon. I have read about Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley and Martinborough growing some great stuff in the Southern Hemisphere.  For me Burgundy is still my favourite, although I will always have a place in my heart for the Central Otago Boys. Louis Latour offers brilliant value for money on all of the wines they produce and this Pinot is no different, A fair price for a very good standard.  So much red fruit on the nose and an extremely well balanced.  People seem to have a preconception that it is a wishy washy wine with no body but it is far from it. Good Pinot can stand shoulder to shoulder with any wine. The wine is such an easy going wine that just needs a little time to open up before serving I really enjoyed it with some cheese between Christmas and New Years. Bordeaux blend Paulliac Domaine Barons De Rothschild Lafite 2016 @marksandspencerfoodpr Score 83 🍷Have you tried this wine? 🍷Best Bordeaux you have tried? I had not bought M&S wine for a long time, I had voucher to use and decided to see what they had to offer. The cream of the crop was this Domaine Barons De Rothschild Lafite from the outstanding commune of Paulliac on the left bank of Bordeaux. I had a look on their website to see if I could find any information on where the grapes came from in Paulliac. Sadly for me there was not a lot of information on the M&S website. The Domaine Barons De Rothschild Lafite label suckered me in. I thought maybe it was their 3rd growth wine. Bottles of the 1855 classification Premier Cru can go for thousands of pounds. Maybe would be less powerful than a young bordeaux from this area and designed to drink rather than store away. My thinking was it would be smother wine and therefore would go well with turkey plus all the trimming. To be fair it did, it is just not really worthy of the price tag. Medoc communes at this price from the more famous Pauliac, Marguax and St Julians bigger Chateau 3rd and 4th grows can be I feel. I think it is unofficially the 4th growth of the Chateau. There was nothing wrong with the wine and it was plesent enough but there is better Haut Medoc blends for half the price. The aromas where not very prominent. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre Bloson Du Rhone Chateauneuf Du Pape 2018 @waitroseandpartners Score 87 🍷Thoughts on this Southern Rhone blend? 🍇Whats you GSM blend? 🍷is Chateauneuf Du Pape worth the money? I sometimes feel like Chateauneuf Du Pape, that maybe I have been a bit spoiled, I went on a day trip when I was in Aix-en-Provence and tasted some outstanding CDP. I sometimes feel you are paying for the name and they can be a bit middle of the road. Don’t get me wrong, this was a lovely food wine and went amazing with lamb and gelatinous pomme puree. The wine is not very pronounced but once it opens up has some really nice red and dark fruit from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre blend. On offer at Waitrose this is worth the value, however I wouldn’t pay full price. I think you can get better value in other regions of the Cote Du Rhone with similar blends.  All in all though a really enjoyable wine. Cinsault, Grenache Château de Berne Provence Rosé 2019 @waitroseandpartners Score 84 Do you like Rosé? What about Provence? I have happy memoirs of Jean-Les-Pins and Cap D’Antibes enjoying a glass or two in the Cote D’Azur. They do make good Rosé in this part of the world. Dry with good minerally and that is how i like mines. Warm hot summers with the mistral coming of the Alps cooling the grapes. The farm houses are built with their doors facing South. To keep the fiercely cold mistral winds from the door. Provence you can ski in the morning and sip Rosé on the beach in the afternoon. Château De Berne is a very well balanced wine, nice stone and red fruit on the nose and palate. Lovely dry finish with a lot of fresh acidity. This Rosé passes for a serious enough wine. I enjoyed it and would be a really good summer wine with an spaghetti puttanesca. A wee tip you want to be drinking a vintage within the previous year. Chardonnay Les Charmes Mâcon-Lugny Burgundy 2018 @waitroseandpartners Score 94 Do you drink Chardonnay or Anything But Chardonnay? Favourite Chardonnay? Favourite Burgundy region? Ok there is a lot or there was lot of bad Chardonnay out there. The good stuff like Burgundy, Napa or any the quality wine regions usually do it very well. It takes good soil and skills in winery. It is worth a try again if you are ABC crew! Macon-Lugny Wine I could literally sit and smell all day. The perfect balance of fresh fruit and that creamy buttery toffee smell. Then as it starts to breathe a little that beautiful honey smell starts to come through. The price you pay for a good one is just so unbelievable. It is the most under rated wine, the value in this part of burgundy is amazing. The texture in your mouth is such a flavour explosion. instantly I taste soft pronounced Toffee then Peach, Pineapple and is so comforting as it heats on your tongue and the flavours change to Mango. then ending on a salted caramel. It is just what drinking very good quality wine is all about. I can't say enough about this part of Burgundy. Bordeaux blend La Commanderie St-Estèph 2013 @majesticwine Score 88 🍷Have you tried this wine? 🍷Oldest Bordeaux you have tried? 🍷Do you age your wine? Out of the left bank St Estephe up the north of the famous AOC medoc communes is the slowest to ready for drinking, a bit closer to the Atlantic Ocean it takes it time with they cool breezes. The tannins take a bit of time to melow so 7-10 years is really a minium. There was a little sedement in the bottom of the bottle once I had decanted, showing a good developing. I left it a good 5 hours to open up. I got this on offer in Majestics for under a tenner about 4 years ago and it is now drink well and drinking like a wine double its price. It was on its way to garnet I should have maybe left it another year or two. A lot of tertiory aromas starting to come through but a good balance of black fruit on the nose. It went amazing with these lamb chops done very simple just cooked in there own fat with Salt, Pepper, Dried Oragano and Rosemary. Bordeaux and lamb what could be better? Bordeaux blend Chateau La Garde Pessac-Leognan 2012 @majesticwine Score 91 🍷Have you tried this wine? 🍷Whats you favourite Bordeaux you have appellation? Chateau La Garde 2012 from Pessac-Leognan. 9 year old as it still got a lot of devolping to do in the bottle. I think another 3-5 years before this starts come it's prime. Loads of big bold black fruit on the nose. Still a lot of acidity in the bottle, A good few hours decanting or maybe the night before. The tannins have mellowed well over the years and there was quite a bit of sediment from them falling out in the bottle. It reminds you off what a power grape Merlot can be on the left bank. When I was typing this I assumed it was a high Cabernet Sauvingnon and curriosity got the better of me so I had to go find the tasting note the blend but its was 52% and 48% Shows what I know I would have had this in the high 70s Cab Sav. I think as time goes on this will score a lot higher. I would say this will drink well in another 9 years. This is a Chateau with a lot of history. It out dates the Medoc classifications. Passing hands many times since 1732. I enjoyed this with a stake and it went amazing. Dolcetto Monferrato 2019 Cantine Povero Score 86 @thegoodspiritscowinebeer The little sweet one, as it is known in Italian. Funny name as this bad boys dry. Noir berry skin this is a lovely every day wine to enjoy at a fair price, I would say it is a good quality wine. It is not a Barolo or Barberesco its pals from the Piedmont and is used to generate some early income for the vineyard as the two mentioned Nebbiolo regions do their magic and mature in wooden vats or the modernist barrique barrels. The Cantine Povero is a ballsy wee wine with really good acidity, It is on the lighter side and I think it makes a good alternative to a good burgundy Pinot Noir whilst saving a few pounds. The wines definitely one to enjoy in its youth.
