And the final piece for the #windowsintothepast exhibition. It had to be done really... Words That Say - Mega City Four 100x70cm Oil on canvas What can I say? Mega City Four were one of Rushmoor's most successful bands. Touring the world relentlessly MC4 became a cult band that still have a huge (and wonderful) following of fans to this day. Fans that support the grassroots music charity I founded @f4wiz I remember walking through Aldershot with Wiz after band practice one afternoon shortly before he passed away. We walked down through Union Street to Sebastopol Road where the band recorded the album of the same name. The studio, long gone, had been replaced by flats, dandelions growing from gaps in the pavement reminiscent of the album cover I had earlier designed for Ipanema (Wiz's later band). Wiz spoke fondly of those times, telling me stories as we walked home together. Just a few weeks later I was left alone with those memories. Words That Say is arguably one of Mega City Four's best songs, at least one of my favourites. Later Gerry from the band and myself worked with 3 Loop Music to get Sebastopol Road reissued. Growing up, my family never went on vacations, in part because we had neither the time nor the means to do so. I was always envious of the family vacations my friends would go on, even the "terrible" ones. As I got older, I promised myself that once I had the means, I'd take my family on a vacation every year because the time and memories we have with one another is both finite and precious. Aside from relaxing and spending time together, one of the other advantages of traveling with one another are the lucid moments when my mom is able to open up about the past. While driving on the dirt road en route to Iwahig Firefly and Mangrove Wildlife Park, mom started to reminisce about her childhood and how she used to catch fireflies as a child. As she started talking about Cambodia again, we somehow wound up on the topic of our time in Chonburi at Phanat Nikhom Refugee Camp. She talked about our journey there, about my sister being kidnapped and held for ransom, and the choice she made to not give either of us up during the journey. I know these topics are painful for her, but these are the moments I cherish, the rare opportunities to see into a painful past that's shrouded by PTSD and because I was too young to remember myself. I had the privilege of creating work focused on our rich musical history within Rushmoor in the building that housed the first music hall, Theatre Royal and later the awesome Spinnadisc. Where I spent a lot of my youth and spare cash. I've known Jamie, Guy & John from Reuben since before they were Reuben. Before any if us really did anything. We basically grew up together held by the singular passion that is music. Reuben were managed by one of my dearest mates @kickartsuk for many many years, played our legendary home venue @westendcentre with packed out audiences. Those shows never failed to cement a community brought together by sound. It felt a very special time, both as an exciting scene to be part of but also personally, as everything felt possible.
