I am absolutely sickened by what has happened today. Women’s bodies have long been a battleground, but living at the intersection of being female and autistic has shown me the even greater struggle we face in ensuring the reproductive rights of people on the spectrum.
The right to choose, whether to choose to carry a pregnancy term or to have an abortion, is a fundamental one that is inextricably tied to bodily autonomy and the right to self-determination. Today’s ruling sets a precedent that AFAB people do not have the right to bodily autonomy, and that the most vulnerable among us will not only not have our choices respected, but may be denied the right to that choice in the first place.
As I begin work on developing a sexual education curriculum for students on the autism spectrum, I am left to wonder how I will keep autistic women and AFAB people safe in a world that disregards their sexuality and agency all too readily. The fight ahead has become even greater than any of us could have expected.
But I can’t stop, and I won’t stop, until every last one of us is free…
