I can still feel the cold from photographing these Snowy Owls in Ottawa—trekking through thigh-high snow to get a shot. Lucky that this lovely owl sat on a piece of machinery for a great shot.

A Red-billed Buffalo Weaver perches amongst the verdant greenery of the banks of the Luvuvhu River and, once again, provides an example of just how complex and fascinating nature is.

It is a bird that lives in dry savannahs and sparse woodland, yet here it is, in the lushest, greenest corner of southern Africa.

Red-billed Buffalo Weavers are fascinating in many other ways, they have an extremely varied diet which consists of insects, seeds and fruit. They forage mostly on the ground, sometimes in association with large herbivores such as Buffalo, hence their name. This is opportunistic behaviour, taking advantage of insects such as scorpions, crickets, locusts, grasshoppers, caterpillars, beetles, weevils, wasps, bees, ants, flies, and spiders that have been disturbed by the larger, grazing animals.

Their social arrangements are also interesting, preferring apartment-style living! Breeding in colonies, Red-billed buffalo weavers build nests that are composed of an enormous mass of woven thorny twigs, nest-weaving being common to all species of weaver. The colonial nest is divided into separate apartments, each managed by a polygamous male. Each apartment has multiple, smaller egg chambers built by the females. These smaller chambers are made of grass, leaves and roots. Colonial nests are usually found in a large, thorny tree and a penthouse platform nest is often constructed on top of the nesting colony by other, larger species, such as vultures, eagles and geese.

Red-billed Buffalo Weaver communal nests are sometimes raided by snakes, baboons and Gymnogene (African Harrier-hawk), causing loud panic and pandemonium.

You could have a peek of a pika. And leave a like if ya'd like'tah . Anyway, I had a plan to make a long drive to see elk today, but my GPS kept saying traffic was getting worse and that it was gonna take like an extra hour to get there. So instead I went exploring some forest roads near the tiny town of Liberty, WA. If you know this area, it's sort of the mountains between Wenatchee and Ellensburg which is sort of where I live except I made a long loop around the mountains and came back up from the west. Anyway, there are elk, but I can't get far enough in there without an off-road vehicle. . So after driving around for practically forever and getting out to look a few times, I didn't find anything any signs at all of elk or any other wildlife and I was sick of dusty roads so I just went back to the Leavenworth hatchery. I did see a few bears, but I didn't get any photos that really even compared to the ones I already got. . Kind of a long boring day and too much driving. I really get a bug boost when I get great pictures and kinda need that to get through the work week and didn't get anything this weekend. But at the same time, if if you got great photos every time, those great photos would just be average. Or maybe it'd be a sign that you're deluded. So you sorta need to sometimes not get any good pictures for it to mean something when you do get good ones. . I'm also starting to really look forward to moving to San Juan Island for a change of scenery. If I get some good pictures there, I wanna try a little harder to sell them. It's a little more touristy there than other places I've been lately so maybe I can try to make prints and get shops to take them on consignment or something. I gotta figure out some way to do photography full time. I've completely run out of motivation for my consulting work... I love this little male Double-banded Sandgrouse’s amazing collage of colours, textures and patterns. All puffed up after a chilly night in the Lowveld, with the rising sun reflected in his eye.

I have always had a fascination for plumage and these small things give so much joy, like the collection of feathers in my study which brings back many memories; the primary wing feathers of a Wedge-tailed Eagle and of a Spotted Nightjar, sad reminders of roadside deaths. The soft downy breast feathers of the Brown Goshawk and Rainbow Lorikeets who love the big tree outside my window, and then there are the colourful reminders of places that I deeply love, like the tiny Lilac nuchal crest feathers of a Western Bowerbird from the Outback or the Scarlet wing feathers of a Purple-crested Lourie I picked up at False Bay in Zululand. These little things mean a lot.
