WELCOME TO THE WILD PLACE!
What is the Wild Place? Well, to answer that question, we’re going to need to tell a long, hopefully not boring story. So get comfortable. I brought along some lemonade, so at least you have a drink while I tell the story... no, I will not tl;dr it, this is important.
Anyways, let’s take ourselves outside of this big ball of water and earth we’re hanging out on. Now let’s take ourselves outside the solar system. Now our galaxy. Now our universe. Keep on goin’, until you’re staring at a whole bunch of universes, floating around and generally doing whatever it is universes do.
Now let’s put a big red circle around one of these universes. Now zoom into that universe until you get to a whole new planet in a whole new solar system in a whole new galaxy.
Looks weird, doesn’t it? Like one half’s made of fire that is also made of jello? Well, let’s leave that place alone, and focus on the half that looks pretty similar to our world. There are an awful lot of names for it, but in the context of the story, let’s just call it “The Normal World”. Of course, compared to here it’s far from normal, but for them it’s as normal as it comes.
The Normal World is remarkably similar to our world, the one we have right here, right now. Except for the fact that, in the Normal World, magic is as real as oxygen or the fact that movies are never as good as the book they’re based off of. This, obviously, has changed an awful lot of things.
For example, there are all sorts of different species wandering around. Sure, you’ve got the usual, elves, dwarves, gnomes... but you also have some more esoteric ones wandering around. Chimeras (which, despite the name, are basically anthropomorphic animals), Shadowmen, Elementals... yeah, this world’s pretty diverse when it comes to sapient species.
And obviously, where there’s magic, there’s stuff like enchantments, magic spells, all sorts of crazy crap. And trust me when I say it’s definitely there. Almost everything’s enchanted in some way or another, and often those enchantments are integral to the operation of devices. Sure, your phone may not need a battery thanks to its electricity enchantment, but if you ever bring it into an anti-magic zone it’s basically junk.
But I suppose you’re not really here for a relatively tame world like that, huh? No, I see that look in your eye, you’re here for some excitement! Well, strap in, because now it’s time to talk about the Wild Place, that fire-y, jello-y place we mentioned earlier.
The Wild Place is a realm unlike any other. The Wild Place is a constantly roiling chaos, features appearing and disappearing in an instant, new forms of life springing into being just to be snuffed out a few minutes later. But that’s okay. That’s the way the Wild Place is.
The important thing about the Wild Place is that it’s a magical place. Very strong, primal magic, unlike anything the Normal World could even begin to think of. And while that makes the Wild Place a fantastic place beyond one’s wildest dreams, it also makes the Wild Place very dangerous...
The Wild Place feeds off of the thoughts and emotions of the Normal World. Its magic is intimately linked to every mind and heart in the Normal World, borrowing from their hopes, their dreams, their every thought and absorbing them into itself.
While normally this only creates some wildly shifting landscapes and the occasional briefly lived life, sometimes a thought or feeling is strong enough that it can survive the constant shifting of its home. In those instances, it feels an inexorable drive to make its way to the Normal World.
These creatures are usually powerful, and dangerous. And these entities are known as Monsters.
Monsters can come in all shapes and sizes, and they don’t really have to adhere to anything we’d consider basic biology. All that matters is that they fit the thought they were created by. This can, understandably, cause some issues.
Thankfully, in case a Monster proves to be dangerous, people tend to hire Monster Hunters, who make their living off of finding these monsters and either destroying them, shepherding them back into the Wild Place, or even finding a peaceful use for them! Some Monsters turn out to make pretty great pets!
And there are a lot of stories about these Monster Hunters. So many that I’m not sure I could tell all of them in my lifetime. They’re very interesting stories, though!
Huh? You want to hear more of them? Really? I kinda figured I’d scared you off with this exposition dump...
Well, alright, get comfortable, kid. I’ve got a lot of stories to tell, and not a whole lot of time to tell them...
Let’s see... where do I start? Oh, here’s a good one! You see, once...
