I still utterly adore this moment, and this expression. I love the fact that Serena recognised that Bernie was struggling, clocked the nurses gossiping about her (and they were - it wasn’t in Bernie’s head), and her response was to simply offer Bernie an out. A plausible out and one with no pressure. She didn’t get angry at the nurses and make a scene or leap to her defence. Nor did she draw attention to Bernie and make her discuss with her or pester her with questions about why she’s not listening to Jason or why she’s being so shifty etc. She doesn’t need to. 

Whether it’s the PTSD and anxiety rearing it’s head, whether it’s directly caused by the ghost of Cameron and the nurses gossiping, it doesn’t matter. Serena recognises that Bernie is distressed and knows EXACTLY what she needs, but also giving Bernie control to say no, or to take the offer and go and get space. And that just shows how utterly in-tune they are to one another but also the journey they’ve been on. The issue that Bernie is going through at that moment isn’t a new one, which is why Serena is confident in the remedy and confident in the way she handles it. When Serena watches Bernie go, she knows that Bernie will be fine. And there’s a slight smile there that just belies all the love Serena has for her fiancée. 

And Serena, on her part, doesn't FRET. A continuous Serena problem was the fact she could be overbearing when she thought she had reason to be. She was with her Mum's care. With Jason's needs. With Guinevere before and after birth. With the people under her supervision. Now, we have Serena perfectly happy to give Bernie that time and space, knowing she can look after herself and come back when ready. There's no worry when Bernie comes back after quite a while. Instead it's a smile and "there you are!" - and then later, on the roof, she goes to find Bernie, knowing exactly where she'll be, not out of any concern for her, but because Jason's ready to be transferred, probably. They are apart for a lot of this episode, but they are totally and utterly together. 

Serena just looks so at ease in her own skin.
