Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present in the moment.
Host Katelyn Darrow shares how to get clarity and peace of mind to ride oneself of anxiety, stress, and to help with connecting with others. An in-depth interview with Tom Voss and his sister, Rebecca Nguyen, authors of the book, Where War Ends, provides insight into moral injury and how mindfulness and meditation can alleviate the pain. Tom served as an infantry scout in the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment’s scout-sniper platoon. While deployed in Mosul, Iraq, he participated in hundreds of combat and humanitarian missions. Through a newfound interest in meditation, he gained understanding that eases the pain of the past and offers real hope for healing in the present. Simple breathing exercises gave Tom what medication, therapy, alcohol, and drugs couldn’t: the chance to heal a soul he didn’t even think he had anymore. He pursued meditation training and discovered sacred breathing techniques that shattered his understanding of war and himself — and moved him from despair to hope. Voss’s story will give inspiration to veterans, their friends and family, and survivors of all kinds.
He now teaches meditation to help veterans everywhere.
BIOS:
TOM VOSS served as an infantry scout in the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment’s scout-sniper platoon. While deployed in Iraq, he participated in hundreds of combat and humanitarian missions. Voss’s journey across America was captured on film by Emmy®-nominated documentary filmmaker Michael Collins. The film, which has enjoyed theatrical releases in New York and Los Angeles and been screened at dozens of film festivals nationwide, is called Almost Sunrise. In November 2017 Almost Sunrise was broadcast nationally as part of the P.O.V. documentary series on PBS, resulting in an Emmy nomination. Storytelling and Poetry
The history of the world is a result of storytelling over the ages. Long before the written word, oral histories were passed down through the generations. His story. Her story. Arjin Claire and Andrea Smith host this episode as part of Super Smart Sundays. What does adventure mean to you? Veteran radio host and BTSYA volunteer, Rachel Glass spearheads this exciting program about experiences and adventures. As part of our Super Smart Sundays, Rachel interviews author C.R. Kahme about her Libbie Lyndton series. The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island has always been a retreat from the modern-day world. For C.R.’s main character, Libbie Lyndton, the Grand Hotel is far more than that - it was both a paradise for a horse-loving girl and a mystery that begged to be solved. A lifetime of careers all centered on my visual acuity and deficits in my ability to grasp the meaning of the written word, now known to be called Dyslexia. Being a strong "Left-Brained' artist with a talent for finding color in every aspect of life, I found that words have become my color palette. Beginning my professional life as an interior designer, I began writing a "Dear Decorator" column for a New York newspaper and went on to become a reporter, and then a freelancer for Cape Cod Home magazine. The love of horses and a lifetime of memories generated from joyful moments spent on Mackinac Island, Michigan where all transportation is horse "driven". created the raw material for the rich sharing of history and fantasy through the pages of the Libbie Lyndton Adventure series. Immigration: Why We Are Coming with Yasin Kakande
From veteran journalist, Yasin Kakande, expelled from two Middle East countries because of his daunting investigative reporting, comes the real story of why Africans flee their beloved homelands for unfamiliar and uncertain surroundings with his book, Why We Are Coming. Host Siri Phaneendra talks with Yasin about his amazing journey to combat corporate greed, exploitation, political greed, and the plight of migrants worldwide. Economic, social, and political conditions in his own country of Uganda made living there impossible. Yasin provides glimpse of the migrant crisis and asks us to acknowledge that migrants need to be allowed to live and work legally in a country to be productive citizens. Siri also offers a method to meditation and shares her family’s exodus from India and their struggle to become US citizens. Why We Are Coming is a book that sheds a light on a very vulnerable population. Immigrants have always added value to the economy and culture of a country. America was built by immigrants.
BIO: Yasin Kakande is an International journalist, migrant activist TED Fellow and author of a new book on the historical and contemporary reasons for African immigration, Why We Are Coming. As a migrant from Uganda, first in the Middle East and now in the U.S., Kakande strives to fill in a migrant’s voice in the ongoing global debate over refugees and migrants. His previous two books The Ambitious Struggle (2013) and Slave States (2015) chronicled the abuses and exploitation of migrants, who work in the Middle East.
