Eight Big Financial Moves That People New to Frugality Often Overlook

When people first start digging into frugality, they often look at the simplest moves, the low hanging fruit that can save a little bit of money with little effort. Simple things like turning off the lights or keeping the thermostat a little higher or lower do save you money, but they dont really provide a transformative effect to your finances. Even big one-off moves like selling off a bunch of unused stuff from your closet can be useful, but they dont make a lasting difference. What really makes a difference are the changes that permanently and significantly reduce your monthly bills. If you have smaller bills coming in each month, then you have more breathing room to make better financial moves and start building some financial momentum in your life rather than just treading water. Each one of these big moves can save you hundreds, if not thousands, a year. If you can take action on just a few of these, youre going to see a rapid transformative effect on your finances. Youll have hundreds more a month to work with, and then you can take that money and use it to pay off debts or start saving for retirement or other life goals. Some of these are surprisingly easy they just take some time. Some of them are hard. Some of them are going to make you say Nope, no way as an instinctive response. Dont fall into that trap. Consider each one with care and ask yourself whether its something you could actually do in your life. Could you move? Could you bike to work? Could you make your food at home? Pick a couple of these and put them to work in your life. The effect will be pretty powerful indeed. Moving to a Smaller Home or Apartment This move saves you money on housing expenses each and every month. If youre a renter, youre going to reduce your monthly rent significantly. If youre a homeowner, selling your current home and buying a less expensive one will chop away a significant amount of your mortgage in one action. Lets say, for example, that your rent is $1,000 a month. You shop around and find an apartment you can live with for $750 a month. With the single action of moving to that new apartment, youre saving $250 a month for as long as youre in the area. Thats a car payment. Or, lets say you live in a $250,000 home and you identify a home on the market for $170,000 that you can live with. Simply get a bridge loan from your local credit union, make that move, then sell your current home, using the proceeds to pay off that bridge loan and a large portion of your current mortgage with one move. This will likely leave you with a much smaller mortgage payment (if you get a 30 year loan) or a somewhat smaller mortgage payment with a much smaller portion going to interest (if you get a 15 year loan). Moving Closer to Work Moving closer to work can significantly reduce the length of your commute, which saves a lot on gas and wear and tear on your car. Lets say, for example, that you drive a typical sedan for your commute. It gets 30 miles per gallon of gas and youre going to replace it every 150,000 miles with a car that you put another $15,000 into after trade-in. Outside of commuting, you drive it 5,000 miles per year. Your normal commute is 15 miles each way and you drive that distance back and forth 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year. That adds up to 15,000 miles. That means three scheduled maintenance visits just because of your commute (lets say theyre $100 each, on average, given that youre following the maintenance schedule, so $300), plus 500 extra gallons of gas at $4 a pop ($2,000). Youre putting 20,000 miles a year total on the car, so youll replace it in 7.5 years, meaning youre losing $2,000 a year in total depreciation and $1,500 just due to your work commute. Thats a total cost of $3,800, and were not even including things like tires and batteries. Lets say you moved so that you now live 5 miles from work. That adds up to 5,000 miles of driving a year. Youre only doing one scheduled maintenance visit for work a year ($100) and 166 gallons of gas at $4 a pop ($664). Youre only putting 10,000 miles a year on the car, which means youll replace it in 15 years, meaning youre only losing $1,000 a year in depreciation and only $500 to your work commute. Thats a total cost of $1,264, not including savings from less wear on your tires, fewer tolls, and so on. In that example, that move saves you about $200 a month or $2,500 a year. Over the course of six years, that move alone pays for that $15,000 car replacement. Obviously, your exact situation may vary, but if you can move and cut 50%-75% off of your commute, the savings will be in the thousands per year. Plus, your commute is much shorter, so you have more time than ever at home. Commuting via Bike or Mass Transit Another advantage of living close to work is that you can potentially get to work entirely without the use of a car, thanks to trains, subways, bicycles, and your own humble feet. This allows you to not only avoid all of the expenses of driving fuel, depreciation, maintenance, parking but it can actually open the door to eliminating a car and then eliminating a bunch of additional expenses, like registration and insurance. Even eliminating the mileage can potentially save thousands getting rid of a car entirely can definitely save thousands. If its at all possible for you to do so, consider switching to a means to get to work that doesnt involve your car. Perhaps this means taking the subway or the train to and from work. Maybe it means biking there, or even walking there if youre close enough. One good approach is to make this into a 30 day or a 60 day challenge challenge yourself to do this for 30 or 60 days in a row. If this process leads you to completely downsizing one of your cars, then youll easily save thousands of dollars a year. Even if it doesnt, youll easily save hundreds a year in saved fuel and maintenance. As noted above, if you can eliminate a 10 mile round trip commute in your car, youll save around $1,200 a year in fuel, maintenance, and depreciation. Eliminating Cable/Satellite The average American cable or satellite bill is a little over $100 a month. Many people hang onto their service primarily to watch one or two channels, with occasional rare dips into other channels. In other words, if you can simply cut out those one or two channels from your life and find something else to watch, youre quickly saving $1,200 a year. We cut the cord last year, sticking with just our already-existing streaming services, and it was much less painful than we expected. We either found other sources for the programming we missed or accepted that paying more than $100 a month for just a program or two just wasnt worth it. Again, a good way to see if this works for you is with a 30 day or a 60 day challenge. Simply choose to not watch your cable or satellite service for 30 or 60 days and see whether it really has a negative impact on your life. If it doesnt, call and cancel the service. Shopping Around for All Bills For every single monthly, quarterly, or annual bill you have, spend some time shopping around for a better rate, then either switch services or use that better rate to negotiate with your current service provider. This strategy works for many things: credit cards, cell phones, internet service, insurance, and so on. You just pick a particular bill, identify what its actually providing for you, shop around for offers from other providers, see how much youll save, and then call your current provider and negotiate a lower rate. If you get a reduction and youre happy with your provider, stay put; otherwise, switch providers. A good way of doing this is to choose one bill a week and do the homework on it. Perhaps this week youll look into internet providers in your area. Next week, you might look at insurance packages. Whatever it is youre evaluating, look for competitors in that field who offer the same service that you need and get quotes from them. How much will they charge you per month (or billing cycle)? Get a few quotes from top competitors, then go to your current service provider and negotiate. Simply tell them that you have offers to switch providers at a much better rate, but that youd like to stay put if they can match it. Often, theyll match it or come close; if they wont, then switch providers. If you negotiate with five providers over the course of five weeks and each one saves you $20 on your monthly bill, that adds up to $1,200 a year in pure savings. Preparing Meals Exclusively at Home Except for Special Occasions On average, it is almost five times more expensive to eat restaurant food than eat similar food at home. The USDA estimates that a family of four on a moderate meal plan spends $239 a week on food, or $60 a person, or about $3 per meal. The average American household spends $3,008 a year eating out. If you churn all of those numbers together, the average American family would save about $2,256 a year preparing all of their meals at home from basic ingredients. In other words, if you want to start saving thousands a year, turn eating out into a special event that you do only occasionally for real social reasons and prepare every other meal you can at home. For many Americans, that requires some real changes to their meal preparation routines, but its a change that can save thousands. My biggest piece of advice for doing this is to make it into a series of easy routines: + Make a meal plan, make a grocery list from the ingredients, and shop for them once a week. + Do a lot of your meal prep work for the week on Sunday afternoons, including banking a few meals into the freezer; youll find that you recoup this time on weeknights when you have meals basically ready to go that are often even faster than eating out or getting delivery. + Start assembling lunches the evening before when youre picking up supper. + Master a handful of meals that you and your family like so that you can cook them almost on autopilot; this makes a huge difference. + Make those meals a little flexible, so that they taste and seem different even though theyre basically following the same recipe. A pasta meal, for example, includes just some kind of pasta, some kind of sauce, and perhaps protein and vegetables, but you can vary all of those elements with ease and create very different meals. Spaghetti with olive oil and garlic and roasted vegetables is very different than fettuccine alfredo with chicken, but a lot of the prep work is identical. Switching (Almost) Exclusively to Store Brands This ones super simple and almost falls into that low-hanging fruit category, but its such a big win that its worth noting. For every product you buy that has a store brand version, you buy the store brand version unless the store brand version has shown you that its problematic in some way. Does this really save hundreds a year? It absolutely does. Lets say you go to the grocery store once a week and this rule change causes you to buy ten items in store brand form rather than name brand form. Each one of those shifts saves you an average of, say, $0.50 I think itll be more than that, but well go with $0.50. Youre buying store brand flour, store brand ketchup, store brand trash bags, store brand pasta, store brand eggs, and so on. So, that store brand shift is saving you $5 per store visit. If you do that over 52 weeks, youre saving $260 on your grocery bill. Thats a car payment. I looked at our last grocery store receipt and we bought 37 store brand items. Im not exaggerating. We bought store brand canned tomatoes. We bought store brand frozen broccoli. We bought store brand diet cola. We bought store brand eggs. It added up to 37 individual purchases. If I assume that each of those actually saved $0.50 on average, thats $18.50 on that weekly grocery bill. If I did that 52 weeks in a row, thats $962 this year. Restructure Your Debt By this, I mean find ways to reduce the interest rate on your debts and, often along with that, reduce your monthly payments on your debt as well. The long term benefit comes from reducing your interest rate, though it may not always be reflected in your monthly bill right away. For each of your debts, simply figure out if theres a way to reduce the interest rate. For example, shop around for refinancing for your home mortgage, seeking out a lower interest rate with the same term you have or a shorter term mortgage with a much lower rate. The former will reduce your monthly bill; the latter might actually see a small bump in your bill, but youll pay off the house years earlier. If you have student loans that you havent refinanced yet, shop around for student loan refinancing options and choose one that represents a significant interest rate reduction without a longer term. For your credit cards, look for balance transfer offers from credit card companies that represent a reduction in interest rates. Many credit card companies offer zero interest balance transfer offers. If those arent available to you, you can often negotiate for a lower interest rate by calling the credit card company directly and speaking with a supervisor, though there is some risk of them cancelling your card if you have a poor history with them. These moves can significantly reduce your monthly debt payments and can also reduce the total number of payments you have to make on these debts. If youre in a sufficiently difficult debt situation, the savings easily adds up into the thousands of dollars per year. Final Thoughts Small steps are wonderful because theyre easy to do and easy to incorporate into your daily life, but those small steps often dont equate into big financial changes. Its those big changes that can bring about large financial changes in your life with speed. These eight strategies can save thousands of dollars per year for many Americans. The best route is to apply some of these big changes to your life while still being mindful of the smaller things as well. Together, they can transform your financial picture. Non-smoker, and overall healthy, minus some arthritis. My first thought is to get whole life insurance because it definitely covers my family if I pass away when I am a lot older. However, I then hear that whole life is not a great investment - too expensive and lot of cost/fees involved, you don't really know how much of your premiums are going into your insurance and how much is going into the savings where the company invest the money. After hearing that, I think well term isn't so bad then. I get a lower premium for the same amount of life insurance. But then, I know term insurance only last a limited time. I see 30 years usually being the longest term life insurance. Well 30 years from now (considering nothing happens to me in the next 30 years), I will only be 60. That is still pretty young and then I wil have to renew my term insurance, but at 60, my premium will be a lot more than it would be right now. SO as you can see, I am at a lost and have no clue what to do. I would like some opinions, feedback, suggestions, etc, that would be much appreciated. (side note- when explaining which insurance is better, please explain in simple terms. Our car insurance was expiring on the 28th of may. We had all the premium paid by the end of march. At the end of april we got rid of the car. Couple of days later we received renewal documents from the insurance company. We have been with those company for 2 years, we didn' t make any claims. At this point I was a bit suspicious and the amount seemed very high for what I thought was not a lot of damage but at the same time he said that he either wanted to do it like that or through the insurance and I really didn't want to loose my no-claims discount as insurance for young male drivers is very high without the no-claims. In the end I decided to pay him, not without a certain bitterness owing to the fact that he was pressuring me for an immediate decision, which also made me suspicious. Having sent the cheque for 400, he kept up communications initially and let me know that he'd received it. He said that he would send me a copy of the receipt from the garage for my records but once he received the cheque I never heard back and now cannot get a reply. Bit long-winded for a question but that's the background story, my question is two-fold: 1. Can I do anything about it? It's more the principle than the money that bothers me, I know that I caused damage to his car but I now suspect it wasn't as much as he claimed. 2. Last week, in a quirky weather situation, the street I live on got super-slick just long enough for my 2000 Toyota Camry to go into a 300' free-slide down the hill and crash into a curb and a tree. It was a one-car accident, no one was injured. The repairman can only give me a rough estimate at this time but he thinks it'd cost about $1500 to repair using old body parts, although he says it could cost more if he finds more damage as he goes along--in that case he thinks it might cost up to $2,000 to patch it up out of pocket. I asked him about the pros and cons of paying out of pocket vs. going through insurance in my particular case. He said that if I chose to go through insurance--which would mean getting a USAA adjuster out and all--that he was thinking it would probably cost $2500 to repair, maybe more if it turned out there was more damage that he could see at this time. But he pointed out that I'd have to pay the deductible (which I think is $500 for my car, not sure) and that my insurance rates would go up. But then you'd end up with a new-looking car. [as opposed to a patched-up looking car]. My husband absolutely wants to pay out of pocket--he does not want to involve our auto insurance company, saying, The insurance company is only for the big accidents. Hello there, I'm over 25 and have a driver's license but I currently don't own a car therefore I do not have car insurance. I know that usualy when you rent a car and you have car insurance, you won't have to pay extra for rental car insurance. How does that work if I don't have insurance right now? Is extra insurance from the rental company expensive? Or would they even let me rent a car (only for a couple of days when I go to my cousin's wedding out of state) if I don't have car insurance? The Tea Party leader taking a stand for solar energy: ‘I will do what’s right’

Debbie Dooley is a self-described crusader for solar power in Florida, where she is up against major public power utilities. But she has already won a similar battle in Georgia, and she says her message is that of a true conservative

Debbie Dooley is a firebrand Republican and an outspoken founding member of the Tea Party. But in a fast-intensifying battle over the future of solar power in Florida, she is not on the side you might expect.

Along with a diverse grassroots citizens coalition including environmentalists and other left-leaning activists, Dooley is taking on Big Energy and its big-spending conservative backers in an intriguing fight that puts her toe-to-toe with her onetime political allies.

She is at the spearhead of a campaign to place an initiative before Florida voters next year that would give consumers the freedom to choose to buy their solar energy from smaller private companies and bypass the mega-bucks utilities.

Its Floridas solar eclipse, says Dooley, who points to statistics she claims are proof that the Sunshine State is trailing the nation in utilising its most plentiful natural resource.

If the initiative is successful, Florida would no longer be one of only four states that prohibits so-called third-party power purchase agreements (PPA), which, in basic terms, refer to a consumer allowing a company to install solar panels with no upfront cost, then paying the company for electricity that the panels generate.

As things stand, only those who can afford the substantial initial outlay can power up from the sun, a situation Dooley says is unacceptable. With Florida 14th in the country in terms of installed solar capacity, only $63m was spent on new installations statewide in 2014, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Lets remove the barriers, remove the shackles that protect the monopolies and allow consumer choice and freedom, said Dooley, whose Green Tea coalition of environmentally conscious conservatives is a key component of the Floridians for Solar Choice amalgam.

Unsurprisingly, the big public power utilities dont like the message being pushed by the activists as they tour the state attempting to collect the 683,000 signatures needed by February to get the initiative on Novembers ballot. So companies including Florida Power and Light, Duke Energy, Tampa Electric and Gulf Power are among the donors who have ploughed millions of dollars into a rival group, Consumers for Smart Solar, which is promoting its own initiative that would enshrine in the states constitution their exclusive right to sell solar power.

Their argument is that opening up the industry the way the citizens coalition wants would lead to less regulation and extra expense for traditional consumers in subsidies for the solar industry.

As the duel has become more caustic in recent months, so have the attacks from rightwingers on Dooley, who has driven thousands of miles across Florida with her partner Jason to speak at rallies, lunches and other engagements in support of a new direction for solar power. Some have called her a fake conservative and say she has betrayed her Republican roots. Others have branded her eccentric and dismissed her travels as a solar-powered clown show as she shills for the industry.

I dont worry about the attacks because I understand the political reality, which is theyre afraid of you, Dooley told the Guardian after a recent speaking engagement before the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County.

If youre not being successful, theyre going to ignore you, so Im really getting under someones skin. I have to laugh at that.

Back in 2009, feeling that the Republican party had lost its way, Dooley joined up with 21 like-minded supporters to give the Tea Party movement its first organised structure. I was tired of politics as usual, tired of big money controlling everything, she said, explaining why she became a director of the Tea Party Patriots.

Now, she says, she finds it ironic that much of the criticism comes from rightwing groups who shared her beliefs, including the Koch brothers-funded American Legislative Exchange Council, but which take an opposite stance on clean energy.

True conservatives champion free-market choice, not government-created monopolies that stifle competition. she said. Trying to protect monopolies from competition is not free market. You should be bound by your principles and develop your position on issues based on your principles, not who your financial donors are.

The presence of Dooley, a pastors daughter from Bogalusa, Louisiana, in the midst of the Florida battle could prove to be a trump card, according to Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.

Here in Florida, the political leadership is conservative, so having a voice like Debbies and others on the conservative side to be able to stand up for solar is very critical to the success of running this ballot initiative, he said.

Additionally, this is a conflict Dooley has fought and won before. She says the arguments in Florida, and the tactics employed, are similar to those that existed two years ago in Georgia, another red state wrestling with the solar power issue. Despite heavy opposition from the utilities there, and what she says was its $10m war chest against the organisation, Dooleys grassroots coalition won the day, with a third-party solar bill clearing the legislature this April.

If you mentioned solar in Georgia, it was always, No way, no how, but we won that fight with people power, Dooley said. We couldnt match them in money, so we built a coalition, we got free media, we got our message out there. It was easier for us to get press coverage because people were amazed you had these conservative groups, Tea Party groups, the Sierra Club, elected officials, all joining forces to oppose this.

We all had different messages, the different groups, but we were working for the same goal. If we agree solar is the way to go, we come together and ignore issues we may disagree on while respecting the right of everyone to believe and advocate for them. But come together and stay focused. There are many different roads into Atlanta, where I live, and you make your choice depending on which direction youre coming from. What matters is that you end up there.

Even as a little girl, Dooley refused to be put in a box. When her grandfather bought her a dress-up cowgirl costume as a Christmas gift when she was just seven, the self-confessed tomboy complained loudly.

I dont want that. I dont want be a cowgirl. I want a cowboy outfit, Dooley recalls shouting at her relatives. I was so upset, they took it right back and got me the cowboy outfit. Theyd assumed because I was a girl that was what I wanted. But I was not afraid to challenge the norms.

Dooley says her early years following her fathers preachings in Louisiana, Tennessee and Florida helped to shape her political leanings and turned her into the driven character she is today at the age of 57.

I learned at a very early age to speak up and not be taken advantage of. I had no issue doing that, she said. My daddy prepared me well: he was strong, not afraid to take a step out, and I get a lot of my traits from him.

I will do whats right and damn the torpedoes kind of thing. If you know a preachers kid, you know they can be rebellious. People have preconceived notions about you and you fight to show its not like that. You grow up tough, you grow up to be independent.

Any pastor will tell you, you can have 100 in your congregation and only a portion of them will be happy at any one time. You understand that not everyone will be happy; you just do your best and stand for whats right.

Dooley, however, insists that taking a stand does not always have to be a politically charged move. I became a crusader for solar and Im appealing to conservatives, [but] I believe being good stewards of the environment God gave us should not be a partisan issue, she says, pointing out that it was the ultra-conservative president Ronald Reagan who championed the 1987 Montreal Protocol that phased out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from aerosols to protect the ozone layer.

I believe in clean energy. Ive always cared about clean air and a clean environment. Ive always been like that, she said.

I have a grandson, Aiden, who is seven. Hell know I fought for energy choice and freedom, hell know I fought for a clean environment for him, so he wouldnt have a polluted world. I see it is my legacy to him.

Unfortunately, the legacy of some of my fellow Republicans is that they simply denied that we were damaging our environment because they were greedy for economic reasons.
