rereading trc and whelk is so funny because he’s so miserable, bro is just stuck in a constant state of wet cat bc of one thing that happened to him in high school

re: the two of swords (trb ch 15) and adam’s two existing paths (staying with his parents vs moving into monmouth), I think the options are well characterized by “becoming” noah or whelk: staying in the trailer positions him to endure physical harm like noah did; moving into monmouth better positions him to “take over” gansey’s quest (notably, his temporary stay is in noah’s room, as if he's supplanting noah- but this doesn't last. remember adam's repeated question- am i invited? he's cautious of interloping, usurping- but he does it anyway at the end of trb). there’s a quote in trk ch 16 that says something like noah was afraid of adam, or afraid for him- this is what calla perceives when she touches noah. i think noah and whelk both make interesting mirrors for adam.

adam’s primary reason for not moving into monmouth is his pride, but since we know he’s afraid of hurting gansey (and consequently hurting ronan) and he’s typically cautious, I think it’s reasonable to assume he also keeps his distance to protect his friends from himself. this genuine concern and friendship sets him apart from whelk. they both endure a family upheaval directly before their sacrifice attempts, but whelk directs his despair against noah and adam wields his on noah’s behalf- so he can’t “be” either of them.

but of course when he sacrifices himself to cabeswater, relinquishing not just any safety he has and his pride but his autonomy too, he sets himself on the self-forged third path referenced in the original tarot reading at fox way (st, agnes, his own space, is the locational equivalent, but the character equivalent is himself. he sets on the path to becoming the magician!)
