As an undiagnosed autistic I LOVE talking about my random interests with people and vice versa. So here's what I think the Touchstarved LIs random interests are 😊
Kuras:
Astronomy/ Astrology
assuming that he really is an ancient Angel he probably had a hand in or watched the universe being made so it still fascinates him how it has developed over the centuries
especially what humans have discovered about it
also the meanings they've given to constellations and other parts of the cosmos in tradition and folklore
it's all intriguing and quite amusing to him
he knows all the LIs zodiac signs as well as his regular patients
would sneer and say ' of course you're a Leo ' without any other context and just walk away in that swift angelic manor that he does
has a vintage telescope that he refuses to replace
if you indulge him long enough and let him ramble on about stars he'll stop and be like ' Wait I could just show you'
hope you're not afraid of heights
Leander:
Plants
especially the poisonous kind
he finds them poetic in a sense because of Co he does
like to have a small journal about them and wishes eridia had more nature for him to explore and document
sketches flowers when he has free time and might even color them
he's not the most skilled artist but he good at drawing plant life because he's done it so often
knows the meaning of plants and makes/ buys bouquets accordingly
hints at how he really feels about the person he's giving a bouquet to
has given ones with negative meanings to people he didn't like but needed something from, he knew they wouldn't understand and would just be like "oh a bouquet how thoughtful" " yes this was made especially for you " *wink wink*
has admired the gardens of high town snobs him and his bloodhounds have raided interacted with ( he'll take a few home just because )
is learning how to make teas, medicine, poison and lotions from plants for the fun of it and to help others
wants to have a large garden one day
Mhin:
Fungus/ Mushrooms
they just think they're neat
like how could you not there's so many cool kinds of fungus
they adore that such life can grow from death
will rarely pick mushrooms because they want them to stay where they belong
doesn't want to separate them from their fungi families 🥺
really REALLY likes cool colored fungi that glow
I imagine magical fungi exists in their world so they get really excited when they find some in the wild
they go crazy for those really big mushrooms and will stare at them for hours if they could
has dreamed of sleeping on a mushroom many times like a little fairy but won't tell ANYONE ( ok except Kuras but they didn't mean to, got really embarrassed )
if you gift them a glowing magic mushroom to keep as a nightlight they'll act unfased at first but congratulations you're basically married now
Vere:
Gemstones
eyes dilate like a cat when he sees one
oooo shiny
has stolen found more than he's bought
has a mini hoard of stones stashed away somewhere in his room
he only shows it to people he really likes ( Ais and S/o )
Ais' earrings intrigues him
Ais noticed and took them off so he could see and was more than willing to talk about where he got them
Vere knew exactly what they were made of right away and wanted to tral them as his own to mess with Ais, but lost interest when Ais admitted he wouldn't mind
would lay on a giant pile of gemstones like a dragon's hoard in his full demon fox form if he had the means to ( would put his S/O in the pile too as one of his treasures )
he'll know exactly which gemstones look best on you for jewelry
Ais:
Animals
like alot of animal facts dude
he has a wide range of knowledge because he can't choose a favorite animal. he likes SO MANY
ranging from the scariest of predators on land and sea to the cutest little fellas ( sharks, tigers, bunnies, small birds, sparrows *hint hint*)
if you tell him what your favorite animal is expect to be randomly given little gifts based off of of it ( illustrations, mini figurines, plushies etc )
asked Vere alot of questions about his fox nature ( " does your coat change color in the winter?" " ...Ais I'm trying to get frisky stop asking weird shit" )
was the type of kid to bring strays home so you can imagine how happy he is about having a pack of soulless
he immediately knew which animal/animals they were all based on and knows how to interact with them accordingly
his love for animals kinda messes with his instincts like yeah I shouldn't pet that large predator but what if he's lonely like me 🥺
is totally fine with getting bit and scratched because he overstepped a boundary and will learn from it
I bet eridia's highborn snobs have captured exotic creatures for show so guess who's pulling up with his red eyed soulless gang for a jail break ( he'd give the creatures to a shelter that can relocate and take care of them )
wants to raise alot of pets with his S/o as they grow old. just one big happy family of strays they've taken in: wild soulless, escaped highborn pets, barn animals, alley cats, Vere, etc.

Some covers of Kidnapped
The ones with a kidnapping
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are heaps of these, including a couple of kinkier ones where Davie is tied up. I'm on board with these as a) clearly depicting a scene from the book and b) not spoiling too much of later events. As illustrations... none of them are really calling to me.
The ones with a fight
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's swash those buckles! I'm not a big fan of the left-hand one, where Davie looks to be about eight years old, nor the middle one, where Davie is entirely absent. But the right one, which precisely captures the physique of a gawky 17-year-old who isn't yet used to being so tall, is perfect. Overall, though, I think these covers risk giving the impression that Kidnapped is a very swashbuckling novel, which it is not. Alan is a bonnie fighter; Davie is not.
The ones with a shipwreck
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The third one there is the 2012 Vintage Children's Classics edition, which I think is stunning. If I wanted a physical copy of this novel, that's the one I'd be buying. I don't love that depicting the shipwreck effectively means spoiling events that happen more than a third of the way through the novel, but against that, it does demonstrate the spirit of the thing more than the swashbuckling piratical ones. I enjoy Davie's little tartan coat in the Penguin Classics edition, just so you know that we're in Scotland.
The ones with ALAN
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We're going even further through the narrative of the novel here, but I find myself minding less, because ALAN. I particularly like the very Scottish-looking purple landscape. This is what the book is about, really - especially Alan's lovingly-depicted fancy coat.
The ones with... who is that, anyway?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the covers that really get what the book is about to the ones that... don't. From left to right, we have Davie as Scottish Dick Whittington (aged about 12), Davie as Elvis (aged about 35), and for good measure, a cover that suggests that the main characters of this novel are Ebenezer Balfour and his talking seagull friend.
Baffling.

Tumblr media
disclaimer: this spawned off a twitter thread i made a while back, which itself came from something i’d noticed time and again within the xiv community: the idea that photography isn’t possible there. i’ve seen this a few times, and ultimately what i felt to be the truer statement is that digital photography as we know it in our phones, no. that is not a very accessible thing. most eorzeans aren’t getting a garland ironworks tomephone.
but that doesn’t mean they aren’t taking pictures.
A Case for Eorzean Photography
In the case of our modern world, the art of capturing an image onto paper directly from life dates back to the 1820s. It was called heliography. A wikipedia article on it can be found here. Heliography came about because its inventor wished for an efficient way to reproduce lithographs, engravings, and relief prints, three different illustration styles that had existed by now for varying lengths of time, but all still in use and being the choice method for adding images to text. I’m going to give a short bit of information on each style, because they are also very likely quite prevalent.
Woodcut (Relief)
Woodcut is as its name implies -- you carve your image into a block of wood, coat the raised portions with ink, and then use it in the press. Accessible to learn, accessible to do, if you want rp flavor there’s likely illustrators in every city-state employing this for the newspapers or illustrated editions of books.
Tumblr media
Intaglio (Engraving)
Intaglio is my favorite printmaking method for illustrations, and probably also my favorite for FF14 because it involves playing with chemicals! Let’s get the alchemist roleplayers we know something cool to do. Anyway, with intaglio you’re using acid to burn an image into a metal plate, and the deeper the etchings the darker the shadows. Great for values, great for depth, and have I mentioned you’re just being a little scientist and an artist at the same time?
Tumblr media
Lithography
Lithography is the one you’ve seen the most, even if you aren’t 100% sure how it works. It became very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century -- if you’ve ever gawked at vintage illustrations by Mucha or Leyendecker, those are lithographs! Some of the big plates used for them are just big rocks! Miners could 100% mine up limestone slabs for this.
Tumblr media
Anyway, back to photographs. After heliographs cracked the capture nut suddenly everyone was getting in on it. People were mixing all kinds of chemicals to capture the world as it was at a moment onto a plate of glass (or others! they liked silver too).
Physautotypes used lavender oil as its photosensitive agent. Tree resin was also popular. Both things botanists would routinely be able to harvest and crafters able to distill. I can only imagine how it smelled to make photographs with this, I hope it was nice!
About 20 years after the earliest heliograph came daguerrotypes. Made on silver plates with a copper substrate, daguerrotypes were pricy but popular -- and they had their own special camera made rather than using a camera obscura.
Tumblr media
Daguerrotypes were also when spirit photography came into prominence.
youtube
Ambrotypes came on the heels of daguerrotypes as a cheaper alternative made with less costly materials, and was followed by their even cheaper brethren the tintypes. Bit by bit, photographs were becoming more accessible -- not always the equipment (or the supplies), but in terms of a person or group of people having a portrait made you were starting to see that become more common.
Tumblr media
Ambrotype above, tintype below
Tumblr media
Let it be said also that less costly materials does not mean lower quality image -- each method had its own charm. Tintypes were sturdier than ambrotypes, but both developed quicker than daguerrotypes. Ambrotypes could also have spot colors added to them!
Albumen prints made it to paper, and until we went digital that’s where photographs stayed, on paper! And one of their key binding materials was made from eggs, beautifully common eggs.
So Where Does This Leave Eorzea?
So why did I go into this much detail, with visual examples and links to references that include their materials? Because all these materials exist already within FFXIV. Glass, plates, the types of metals used, the types of chemicals.
They’re part of crafting logs, and gathering leves, and dungeon drops. Alchemists can make these chemical components, goldsmith quests have you making lenses and other more delicate mechanisms, carpenters could easily build boxes for camera obscura (and cameras!).
Different styles of photography and different materials used for them reflect availability of the materials -- where does this character live, what are their cultural beliefs, do they travel much outside of their home region? How much money do they have?
What if using unaspected crystals creates a different effect on the plate? With the right kind of aetherial charge, don’t you think you could photograph ghosts in actuality rather than trickery? There’s a whole quest in 1.0 where an NPC sees the ghost of the city of Sil’dih -- a ghost city!
At any rate, I just think it’s neat to look at what materials exist in this game, and how things from this world may translate to that with the understanding it will not be 21st century. We have a lot of technology that’s existed longer than we sometimes recall or acknowledge -- and it’s good material! Use that stuff! Have fun with it!

With the latest bp album dropping today and seeing that nothing has changed the last two years, I’m curious if you can help me understand why I find it all so….mediocre. I can tell that part of it is the effect you’ve brought up with Hybe of too much money smoothing out all character. I also feel like this is a case where keeping the same collaborators has meant doing the same song with tiny changes 5 times, unlike a lot of other groups where they still have variety while keeping a more consistent overall identity. But they feel very bland in a different way than hybe groups do, and I can’t put my finger on why.
nothing blackpink does has a concept.
well, that's mildly facetious: their concepts are 'what if we were cool and influencers and most importantly GIRLS', and that's a non-entity at this point. visually, none of that means anything and all of it is indistinguishable from each other.
i think this is a great question to illustrate exactly why spectacle (the form) is not as simple as slapping together the most bombastic set pieces and ideas you can think of and calling it a day. in order to make good spectacle, you have to put just as much work in as you do with any other type of art. your ideas have to be grounded in a visual logic that drives the entire world you create: sets, costumes, lighting, even text and sound all have to be interlinked, to communicate with each other.
since it's also on everyone's minds right now, let's use nct 127 as an example. specifically, let's use 2 baddies and sticker. both of these mvs superficially carry the same basic visual ideas: there's very bright and highly saturated colouring and a lot of neon, there's a car, and there's a lot of highly decorated costuming. but each of these mvs have highly specific themes and concepts in which they ground both these more general principles.
sticker draws a direct comparative between the old west and the aestheticized neo(n) techno future that has a basis in science fiction and techno orientalism, and within that comparative there's a line drawn between hackers and cowboys, as figures that operate outside of the law on their own moral codes. throwing in the lowrider is another connection to operating outside the law, as lowriders can only be created via modding/customization and the mods themselves are technically illegal. one can pick apart several different meanings from sticker however they desire, but my point is here that the concept has a context and logic. the imagery and production design are all based around that specific theme, and the styling is uses very obvious markers from cowboy/western fashion to further drive the point home.
and 2 baddies. oh there are some LAYERS to 2 baddies. firstly, one of the main visual motifs is geometric art deco style patterning, which is an arts and design movement that started in the mid 1920s and continued up until around the 40s. this movement did not just impact visual arts, but it also heavily impacted commercial and industrial design, which included both architecture (famously, the chrysler building) and, very notably: cars. this era is the boom of the automobile and the art deco movement in particular produced some of THE most beautiful cars of all time, including:
the bugatti aerolithe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the delahaye 177 rs
Tumblr media
the delahaye 165 cabriolet
Tumblr media
and one of my personal favourites, the phantom corsair
Tumblr media
you know who else was designing cars in the 1930s and 40s? porsche:
the porsche type 12, 1931
Tumblr media
the porsche 356 no. 1, 1948
Tumblr media
and just as an extra fun lil detail, in the chorus of the actual song, there's a sample of a vintage car horn (it's right after the line 'don and manner'), which is the horn of a ford model a, which was ford's second model that replaced the model t, the car that popularized driving. and when was the model a produced?
Tumblr media
and like with sticker, the styling draws directly from the clothing associated with concept, as it has very distinctive visual signifiers. we haven't seen any of the stages yet but i'm willing to bet that most of the styling is going to be based around motorsport gear. this goes across the board for pretty much every 127 styling: it is very obvious which era a performance is from just by looking at the costumes, because they use those very distinctive unified visual signifiers.
now, can you do this with a blackpink cb? name me a significant visual difference between any of their mvs. any of their stylings. all their mvs are colour graded the same, they reuse the same general imagery, there's no coherent theme holding anything together, and all their outfits are typical heightened kpop girl group. using just pure bombast works once or twice, but like as we've seen with their music, when you reuse the same imagery over and over again it loses impact. there's no spark. it gets boring.
#also all of their choreography is the same. sorry#another important thing to note here is that keeping the same collaborators does not always mean that you always produce the same work#sm works with a lot of the same people across different groups + cbs and almost never produces anything with the same degree of 'sameness'#if you are working with the same people constantly and you are producing the same thing every time:#someone or all people in that creative relationship are bad at their jobs. that's the truth#kpop questions#blpk w#nct w#for all they have the life sucked out of them bts does actually switch up their concepts enough that it does make each era distinct#blackpink has not done that a single time. their concept is literally 'we are blackpink'#why do you think they say their name so fucking much in their songs. bc there's nothing else that makes it distinct#groups build identity through numerous different ways but it's always a combination of: the idols faces/voices#choreography/movement styling and music type#when you switch concepts frequently but keep specific throughline threads THATS how you establish signifiers#without making people bored#sure by making everything the same all the time we all definitely recognize blackpink. but like. that's not interesting to keep watching#text#answers#listen. i dont think its gonna happen BUT if we see 127 in like. glitzer 30s-40s suits im going to YELL#i'm hyped for the 2 baddies era bc i love any time i get to flex my car knowledge and SPECIFICALLY my art deco car knowledge#literally one of my favourite things ever i can look at these cars all day#back home i used to go to car shows all the time. a well designed car is one of the most gorgeous pieces of machinery#i have actually seen a real ford model t. i think it was from 1914? a guy in my hometown had one#it's so funny to me bc theyre going to have to change the '2 baddies 1 porsche' line for music shows bc its a brand name?#like cix had to change ferrari to 'mercy' for 458 (hilariously - another cb literally about a car)#the classic 911 design was first introduced in the 1960s so it is technically outside the scope of being an 'art deco car' BUT#it very clearly takes inspiration from some some of the shapes that were floating around at the time like with the aerolithe#AND porsche was experimenting with that shape with the type 12#it just took a couple extra decades for them to finally get there. close enough imo

Note to (my black) self
Who am I? And what makes me the way I am? How do I perceive myself and how does the world perceive me? How do I act accordingly as a black female? “Black girls that live and are being educated in a predominantly white environment experience hinder in their overall wellbeing and sense of identity” (Ricardo, 2015).
Growing up as a black Eritrean female in the Netherlands, I am perceived as a black Eritrean woman by white Dutch people, but my fellow Eritrean people see me as white washed. They never specifically told me why they think that, but if I had to fill that in myself I think that it’s because of the way I dress, act and talk. I suppose it’s because of the fact that I’m a little different from them. Urban dictionary explains being white washed as the following: A derogatory term used to describe a minority who has assimilated with western society. The "White washed" person does not necessarily abandon his/her own culture, but instead embrace others beside his/her own. By calling me whitewashed the person in question is implying that I’m not meeting my ethnic stereotype. People are products of their environment. So unless I’m surrounded by my heritage growing up, I’m more likely to become a product of where I am and who I’m with. I speak and understand the Eritrean language and I am also proud of where I come from, but I have also assimilated into my surroundings in the Western society.
The strange thing about me being labeled white washed, is that society is not surprised when a white person likes a group of different things. I will illustrate this with an example. At the beginning of high school, people always had a reason to make fun of me. If it wasn't about my ethnicity or race, it would be about the way I dressed or my interests. That did not stop me from doing what I liked. I always wanted to try new things out and I wouldn't limit myself to one thing. I wore a lot of vintage clothes and would always go to vintage kilo sales to buy some gems. People assumed that I bought these clothes, because I was poor and made fun of it. They said that I dressed like a grandpa. I also did not limit myself when it came to music. I like to listen to hip-hop, jazz, reggae, soul and afro music, but also to indie, hard rock, techno and house. When I tell people that I listen to hip-hop, jazz or other typical “black” music, nobody is surprised, while this does happen when I tell them that one of my favourite artists is an indie rock band. But is it strange that people are surprised by this? The remarkable thing about this is that when one of my white friends likes so many different things within a certain subject (like music for example), people are not surprised. Back to the definition of what it means to be white washed. In this case, I am indeed not neglecting my own culture as stated in the definition according to Urban dictionary, but I am also embracing something that is characterised as "white culture". This makes me whitewashed according to the definition of the word. This is not the case when it happens to be the other way around, because there is no such thing as being black washed, and quite often white people are even being praised when they are interested in things that are not necessarily part of "white culture" (in this case, music). This is because black culture sells when white people hijack it (Mier, 2020).
I think that this phenomenon has to do with the fact that being white is not seen as something unusual in the western world. Whiteness is not acknowledged as a racialized/ethnicized positioning at all. Whiteness is generally seen as so ordinary, so lacking in characteristics, so normal, so devoid of meaning (Wekker, 2016). Being black, on the other hand, is something that is seen as different on it’s own. It’s a large part of your identity, if you do not meet a certain standard that is created for you, it all becomes a little too complex to comprehend.
I also noticed that there are different kinds of black, just like there are different kinds of white , if you observe people with different ethnicities and history. Slavery is not part of Eritrean history but we did have a colonialism history. Eritrea was colonized by Italy in 1882. When black people talk about their slavery history I feel like I can’t relate to them, but with certain parts I do. I have experienced that as a black person there are differences, but you get treated the same nonetheless.
For example: Sinterklaas - a Dutch tradition that is celebrated on the 5th of December - and his ‘lovely help’ black pete. When December arrives not one black person can escape from all the racism and terror that that month brings with it. Black pete is a product from slavery/colonialism and it has everything to do with racism. It’s racist because black pete is literally white people dressing up by painting their skin black, wearing an afro wig, putting on some lipstick/earrings, acting goofy and serving Sinterklaas (the white man). I personally hated the fact that I would get ridiculed for my hair and skin color as a little black girl due to this holiday. I always got to hear that I could be black pete without actually dressing up or painting myself. I would always laugh it off, because I did not feel comfortable confronting those people. It’s even harder to say it when it’s a big group of white people containing no persons of color at all. I don’t have a history with slavery within my culture, but I still experience the racism that comes with the holiday. That's what I mean by that there are different kinds of black, but black people (in the western world) share the same disadvantages.
Through dating I also found myself uncomfortable or changing/deblackening myself. Remaining silent or laughing it off when I could’ve said something. I have mostly dated white men in the past. The thing is: I don't have a specific type, or at least I like to think that I don’t attach too much value to skin color and ethnicity, because for a reason most of the guys that I have dated so far are white. I came to terms that me being mostly attracted to white men has to do with the cultural archive as Gloria Wekker describes in White innocence. How dutch people - including me - look at the world and therefore also what we find (sexually) attractive has everything to with the cultural archive (Wekker, 2016). I don’t have a lot of criteria when it comes to dating, but I find political views and norms and values the most important thing. As a left oriented person I could never date someone who is very far right orientated, that just clashes with my beliefs. To avoid this kind of inconvenience, I often ask someone's political affiliation on the first date. This also happened with the last guy that I have dated. I immediately asked him what party he voted for in the last elections and he voted for a central party. While answering that question he also asked me in a ludicrous way, if I asked the question because I wanted to make sure that he did not vote for a far right party. And that was exactly the reason why I asked. Time passed after that first date and I heard him saying the N- word*. I asked him afterwards in what context he used that word - in a more private setting -  and he felt attacked. He asked me why I asked that and said that he didn't feel like having this discussion. He was always surrounded by black people growing up and meant no harm. That was the moment that I needed to end it but I did not. On the third date, we went to watch the programme First dates together. A friend of his and a girl I knew happened to go on a date with each other. The girl in question told her date that she could not date a right orientated person. This led into me and my date having a conversation and I again stated that I felt the same way. He told me that he thought that I was narrow-minded, discriminating and that he might even vote for FVD (far right) or BIJ1 (radical left) himself one day. I said that I thought that was odd because they were two extreme opposites of each other and that I couldn't date someone who didn't have the same values as I did. Even if you only vote for the FVD because you agree with one point and disagree with the rest. I like to think that he was very much not aware of his white privilege, because he considered voting for a far right party without taking the racism, classism, misogyny etc of that party into account. I obviously told him that I didn't want to see him again after that.
I always tell myself that because of these experiences I would like to end with a person of color and in the best case scenario: a black man, because a white man will never really understand me anyway and the other way around, but you can’t control who you are attracted to. The best thing that I can do in this instance is being open to and lucky enough to date a (white) person who doesn’t understand, but is willing to put in work and trying to understand. The fact that I dated a few white men also made people think even more that I was white washed. Even though I mostly dated white men I also dated men from other races including black men but that didn't matter. Black women who engage in relationships with white men encounter Black community norms that question their commitment to Blackness (Collins, 2021). So it doesn't matter how much I act on my blackness and the things that being black brings with it, because who I date also defines how committed I am to blackness.
The thing is that I have a ‘very strong’ opinion on politics - as said by people who don’t feel the same - but I keep finding myself in these situations where I feel like I’m assimilating my opinion, because of the discomfort that these situations bring along. These values are very important to me but it feels like I can’t speak out on them, because white people will see me as the angry black woman or person again. Even though I’m not even stating something unusual. The angry black woman is a social control mechanism that is employed to punish black women who violate the societal norms that encourage them to be passive, servile, non-threatening, and unseen (Pilgrim, 2008). So in situations like these I refrain myself from expressing my feelings in order to distance myself from the angry black woman stereotype. Oppressed groups are frequently placed in the situation of being listened to only if we frame our ideas in the language that is familiar to and comfortable for a dominant group (Collins, 2021). Me and all the black people are allowed to be part of the club, you’re allowed to be ‘dutch’, as long as you behave, share exciting recipes, smile a lot, don’t talk about racism, happily go along with everything, and pretend it’s all fun and cozy (Nzume, 2017). Nzume in “Hallo witte mensen” written in 2017 has argued that it’s always about how we, black people should change or adapt ourselves and rarely about what white people can change about themselves it was so refreshing to read this book written for white people about what they can do for us black people, but we need to be realistic. Rome was not built in one day and we - society - have a lot of work to do in the Netherlands or the western society in general, but the only thing that I can do as a black woman in the meantime is to figure out how to deal with these problems. I’m already doing this by sharing and gaining as much knowledge as possible. By sharing things on social media, talking with friends or even strangers. By talking to people I understood that I’m not the only person that has to deal with these things. I have been thinking about starting a podcast with a dear friend of mine to talk about these things, to let other person’s of color who struggle with this know that they are not alone. Writing this essay gave me more insights and motivation to start with that. Society is slowly changing and becoming more accepting, but maybe not as fast as me and many others would like.
All these events often make me feel like I don’t know where to belong, but I am coming to terms with the fact that you can not in fact answer the question “who am I?”,  with one answer. When asking this question one answer is not enough to encapsulate the multiplicities of our spirits and the many selves we embody. We are all multidimensional beings and that’s what makes us so special. So it’s okay for me to be black and to do, like and say the things that I want, without fitting in a narrative that was made for me. I can create my own narrative.

I don’t think my grandmother was even that keen of cats.
A review of Somerset House's 'Cute' exhibition.
Tumblr media
The Cute exhibition at Somerset House begins in a small pink room, and hanging on the wall we see what is also the start, but in this case of a global culture; the first cat memes captured by photographer Harry Pointer, dating back to 1872. Next to it, following the feline theme, there is a vast collection of 300 china cats inside a vitrine. It is Andy Holden’s ‘Cat-tharsis’ (2016). Playing on the headphones hanging underneath the glass cube, Andy talks about what this collection that his grandmother left to him after her passing, meant to his grandmother; how these cats gave her a sense of control, how she used them as a catalyst for the love within her. He also talks about what cats mean to our culture, to our history. He speaks on the UK economy, and how charity shops - the place where her grandmother collected a great number of these figures- might represent the avid mass-consumption of the British public caused by capitalism. An incredibly interesting and unexpected piece on culture and grief, which a quote from, names the title of this text.
If there is a country knows how to do cute, it is Japan. With a whole room dedicated to Japanese vintage illustrations and art, we can see how these drawings were used as a form of escapism from the after-war times during the 90s, and how Japan influenced the western world with the introduction of the kawaii. Jun’ichi Nakahara’s beautiful book cover illustrations (1913-1983) of women represent a beginning for manga and anime style. Weirdly enough, upon entering the room they called my attention as they resembled ‘Girl with a Kitten’ by Lucien Freud, which coincidentally does match the theme of this particular exhibition.
The Hello Kitty room is probably one of the most talked about parts of the exhibition. With two walls full of Hello Kitty branded objects ranging from notebooks, to rice cookers, to coin purses... A shrine to miss Kitty, and an ode to this epitome of capitalism for having influenced a whole generation, not only of children, but of adults as well. It is interesting to see for yourself how the symbol and brand spread their wings through essentially every demographic, and benefited from the over-consumption boom of the 90s and early 2000s. Sadly, apart from this display of products, the room has the icky feeling of an instagram-like photobooth space without adding any artistic value to the exhibition. But, did you know Hello White (her actual name, I’ve learned) " [...] lives in a London suburb, and dreams of becoming a pianist and poet? [That] her birthday is on the 11th of November, her height is measured as five apples, and she weighs the same as three?" Maybe we’re all just like Hello Kitty, but just measured with a lot more apples.
The exhibition follows with great artworks, like Mike Kelley’s iconic ‘Aah… Youth!’ (1990), a critique of “childhood fetishisation”, and Wang Ping’s ‘An Emo Nose’ (2015), a bright and colourful animation depicting- in a surprisingly charming and accurate way- adult loneliness. The middle of the room is overflowing with objects, which the previous section helped contextualise: A Yung Lean poster, a SADBOYS bucket hat, a bright pink ski mask, a bag of smiley face stamped drugs, a Sylvanian Families toy set, a tamagotchi, a duolingo meme, a Charli XCX vinyl, an Animal Crossing gameplay... I found that, seeing what to me are such quotidian objects in an exhibition space made me laugh. They do however, encapsulate my childhood and teenage years, and quite frankly, are a big explanation of who I am. As someone that grew up with unrestrained access to the internet since the age of 11, I can say that these objects essentially raised me. It made me feel tribal, like I was in a global inside joke. These objects also showcase how cuteness can be used as an advantage politically and how effective it is for conveying a message, making the reality of an ugly theme (oppression, systematic injustice, etc) look easier to digest and divulge.
The last section I visited was an interactive space. To tell you the truth, I did not enjoy these rooms as much as I would've liked, and the reason why has nothing to do with the exhibition itself. The room was full of animalistic and screaming under-12 year old kids, and families with prams blocking stairways and hallways, and parents using the space as a playpen for their kids to run around. I stopped at the arcade, where you could play games that followed the theme of the exhibition. As I was giggling away playing the “linear visual novel about a Froggy chilling a pot”, children began running around impatiently, in the hopes that someone would free up one of the arcade looking screens. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t have the patience.
With a combination of humour, social commentary and critique, the exhibition encapsulates the story of a culture and phenomenon we are still living through. It showcases how we’ve created a subculture for the use of evading the terrifying thought of the internet times and the digitalisation taking over our worlds. It displays a wide arrange of topics all within the main theme, that is kept consistent through out. How cuteness “contains, domesticates and translates our desires”, and how it lives in a great part of who we all are. The exhibition, and now this text, concludes with a question: Does cute’s shiny new confidence represent its apotheosis in our late capitalist world? Or rather, does this sheen allow cute to undermine the very foundations of the neoliberal regime which spawned it with an ability to not only challenge the norm, but to transform it?

Quad VA-One+ Amplifier with Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary Speakers SalonAV magazine
Tumblr media
At first, you don’t even know what claims to be the leading role in this set - new three-way monitors in a cool vintage design, released in honor of the 85th anniversary of Wharfedale, or a low-power tube Quad integrated circuit from the One series, modestly standing on the top shelf of a system rack. By the way, it is also new - it is endowed with a more advanced DAC.
TAKE FOR LIVE
This summer we already listened to one "old-school" Quad/Wharfedale tandem, made up of a Vena II transistor amplifier/DAC and two-way Denton 85th Anniversary bookshelves. When, a few months later, another representative of the Wharfedale Heritage line arrived in Moscow - twice as heavy and impressive Lintons, we expected to listen to them along with the second Vienna. But by this time, the delivery of the upgraded tube Quad VA-One + arrived in time and curiosity began to disassemble: isn’t this miniature amplifier best suited for creating a “classic” stereo system?
We look at the Linton 85th Anniversary data. The sensitivity of 90 dB with the current “market” standard of 87 - 89 cannot be called small. Bring a power of about 8-10 watts to such speakers and you can already count on a sound pressure of a hundred decibels (which, by the way, is even higher than the declared SPL for Dentons)! The nominal resistance of the three-band model is not 4, but 6 ohms, that is, they can be considered lighter and according to the "load" criterion. True, Wharfedale recommends connecting the Linton 85th Anniversary to an amplifier with at least 25 watts, and the tube Quad VA-One + does not have that much output - its "maximum sine" is only 15 ...
Tumblr media
But that doesn't mean it won't fit. Acoustic manufacturers often overestimate the lower limit of the recommended power, since there have been cases of driver failure due to too sharp clipping, which can occur in low-power transistor amplifiers even at a relatively low output voltage. There is no such risk with tube amplifiers - they limit the amplitude of the amplified signal softer. And that is why on the official Quad website the VA-One + amplifier in the illustrations poses in tandem with Quad S-1 monitors, which, according to the company's recommendations, should also not be connected to amplifiers weaker than 25 watts.
Tumblr media
In the meantime, we can only judge indirectly about VA-One +. Its predecessor VA-One never appeared in editorial tests, although reviews from music lovers are almost entirely positive. The upgraded model features a front panel design and a new digital-to-analog conversion unit. Like the PA-One+ headphone amp, the unit has an advanced 32-bit Saber ESS9018K2M converter instead of Cirrus Logic's standard 24-bit converter. Such a replacement radically raised the PA-One in the class, and in our case we can count on the same effect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In terms of features and basic circuitry, the plus model is a replica of the amp that Quad released back in 2016. It has only one line input, which is almost directly connected to the volume control. The remaining four inputs are implemented on a digital switch, which allows you to receive a signal via coaxial, optical, USB, and Bluetooth. And that's what a classic Quad amp should look like for today's music lover - combining the "most original sound" of tube technology with today's sought-after PC and mobile connectivity. The amplifier can also be listened to through headphones and controlled via the remote control.Despite its small size, the VA-One+ is quite heavy and is a traditional transformer push-pull with three stages: pre-amplification is provided by ECC83 triodes, followed by an ECC82 dual triode driver that extracts the differential component, and then the signal is already symmetrically fed to the output pairs of pentodes EL84. The point of such textbook circuits is different: in the organization of power supply and the depth of environmental protection, in the control of lamp modes and output transformers, but Quad engineers prefer not to talk about this.
Tumblr media
Linton acoustics repeat Denton 85th Anniversary conceptually, but its design is sharpened for playback with a much larger dynamic range (SPL can reach 110 dB). The bass part is given to a 20 cm driver with a Kevlar cone. The 630 - 2400 Hz range falls on a lightweight 135 mm driver, the membrane of which is also formed from the proprietary Black Woven Kevlar composite. The tweeter is identical to that used in Denton - with a silk dome and ferrite in the magnetic system. Both phase inverter ports are brought to the rear panel. Single line connection.
Tumblr media
Especially for this acoustics, Wharfedale also released stylish vintage stands - extremely solid, heavy, and, by the way, functional (you can store vinyl records in them). I would also draw your attention to protective anthers. The fabric, which is stretched over the frame (the latter is fixed on the front side in the usual way - on steel pins), does not just resemble an old one in texture. The selected synthetic material feels thick and springy to the touch - the unusual three-dimensional weaving certainly somehow has a special effect on the acoustic properties. And this was clearly visible already in the first installation session with the Vena II amplifier. When located away from the walls, Linton built the music stage correctly and quite deeply, but after installing the grills, the sounding space became even more “visual” - it did not lose small details and gained expressive imagery! At the same time, the fabric slightly softened and neutralized the middle register, which at first caught a slight “overplay” (although it didn’t look like a tint).
The upper band is reminiscent of "Denton" in character - the emphasis is not on ideal linearity, but on a less formal and more important for musical perception) quality - uniformity of resolution over the entire band. Microdynamics on HF is transmitted almost exemplary, and this is eloquently evidenced by the distinguishability of all instruments in this band. Starting to listen to something, you first catch small tonal tints in the sound on sonorous or noise spectra, which are typical for old-school tweeters. But after five or ten minutes of adaptation, the ear completely switches to the "relax" mode - now it seems that the sound is exactly as it should be: nothing is brought here, nothing is retouched ...
Tumblr media
Bass is also good precisely for its clarity, and not for volume or “meat”. However, at high levels, Lintons can give out not only a biting punch, but also a powerful blow, and linearity in this part, judging by the recognizability of the color of drums and bass guitars, is at a high level. The main thing is that neither box nor bass-reflex overtones are heard.
Now, not without some timidity, we switch the acoustics to the tube VA-One +. He actually needs some time after switching on to enter the “voice”, but he shows his different, in principle, musical interpretation right away. Musical drive is expressed, for example, not through the “weight” of drums, the fury of guitar bells and whistles, but through the density and richness of timbres, through the lively bulge of the voice, through the isolation of hi-hats and air trails. The naturalness of cellos and double basses is impressive – they turn out to be very saturated, focused and therefore especially “acoustic”. The same, however, can be said about brass, piano or acoustic guitar - the tones are lively and open. Such a textured clarity of timbres in a wide range indicates a good consistency of the mid-frequency head on each flank - and with a high-frequency driver, and with bass. And at the same time - and about the excellent "coordination" of native racks with speakers. If you put your palm on the acoustics during playback, then the body vibrations are almost not felt even at high volume levels.
The Linton/VA-One+ combo is just as good at reaching low bass, despite the lower amp power and less stringent bass control. A trace of compression due to the limitations of the output stages can only be heard on some powerful thunder or crushing shots from cannons, and for most music tracks the range is enough for the eyes (except for places where dynamic contrasts are very strong). The HF pattern is interesting - it is woven from clear sonorous dominants and soft clean atmospheric plumes. However, it all depends on the sound track being listened to - it is she who dictates both the form and the content of this picture. If with transistor amplification it seemed that the system was introducing a drop of some kind of “gag”, now the questions for resolution have disappeared completely. If somewhere something is embellished in sound, then only in the middle band,
Everything written above refers to playing audio files from a laptop via USB, and therefore includes an assessment of the work of the digital part. The analog input of the amplifier is so transparent that it allows you to hear the "hardware" nuances of another source - for example, a more restrained, but at the same time more verified feed by the DAC of a network streamer. But the most valuable quality of VA-One + is that, showing in the smallest gradations the difference between different sources, it still produces an amazingly musical and lively sound, even when powered by a smartphone via Bluetooth. If the VA-One+ had a price tag below the psychological threshold of "stallnik", we would without the slightest doubt award it with the label "Good Buy". However, among lamp models priced up to 2000 euros, it already looks advantageous in many respects.
As for the Linton, this pair of systems in any case looks like an extremely successful acquisition - both on their own and in combination with their own optional racks.
