Gunnerkrigg Liveblog #0C: The Plot Thickens
Originally posted on TV Tropes (27 Nov. 2022)
~
Hello! Here is my third Gunnerkrigg Court liveblog. Today's chapter of the comic is titled "Reynardine" (3.33). Now, I avoided all fan wikis for this thing, but I heard the name "Reynardine" or something like it thrown around here on TV Tropes as that of a major character. So I guess the plot is moving along now?
The chapter starts (3.34) with Annie and Kat playing basketball in gym, with a blonde kid from last chapter being a douche. Annie kicks his ass. Apparently the kid's name is Winsbury (3.35). The gym teacher, Mr. Eglamore, publicly tells Annie off but also privately compliments what she did (3.36).
Kat and Annie hang out in their dorms (3.37) when we learn that the necklace Annie wears is tied to alchemy. Why do I feel this will be important? Because this feels like the exact sort of thing that will be important.
Suddenly, an attack of some sort on the school! Annie is missing (3.39) ... except she's not (3.40) and she's climbing up from the wreckage. Suddenly we see this HUGE white beastie (3.41) who introduces himself as the titular Reynardine (3.42). He was looking for one Surma, and suspects Annie was Surma's daughter (3.45).
Annie\'s in the hospital and confirms her mom is named Surma (3.47). She sneaks out of bed to find Reynardine. She finds a train (3.49) to some large animal holding cells - "Very Hush Hush, You know" (LOL). She finds Reynardine (3.50) and learns (3.50) the dragon hunter who keeps him imprisoned is Mr. Elgamore, her gym teacher! Annie walks up to Reynardine, who (3.52-53) turns into what seems like fire and tries to possess her body! But he's beaten by Elgamore and gets stuck in Annie's toy fox-thingie instead (3.54). Elgamore explains thar Reynardine is a demonic body-snatcher (3.55) who can't be trusted and that the body Annie just saw was one he was possessing. Oh, and possession will kill the host (3.56). Lovely!
Annie is helped back to her bedroom, and the chapter ends (3.57) with Reynardine seemingly still in her plushie. Dun-dun-dun!! There's yet another loredump (3.58) about a sort of dragon creature called an Orjak. It seems to be the creature that Reynardine possessed.
Well, I was right. This is where the plot of Gunnerkrigg Court starts being more apparent ... I think. I noticed that Reynardine focused his gaze specifically on Annie's alchemist necklace throughout the chapter. I suppose that I was right in that the necklace is important. Can't wait to see what that's about!
Wait a minute. Young girl protagonist, important necklace-thingy given by her parents, family with a secret, bad guy who possesses people ... I think I know why the Foglios recommended this comic. Or maybe I just have the "Guy who has only seen Boss Baby" syndrome.

Girl Genius Liveblog #214
UPDATE 214: Cheyenne Wright’s Court of Revenants
Last time the party to celebrate adopted prince Hoffman’s wedding came to an unfortunate end when it was revealed a lot of the diplomats and varied influential people are revenants for the Other. How will the heroes get out of this predicament? Let’s see if that’s found out today!
The problem with people being, well, diplomats and influential people is that you can’t just shoot them and be done. Agatha and the rest will have to run away and harm them as little as possible, and then I’m sure Colette is going to spend a couple hours sending letters to everyone those diplomats work for, informing them their ambassadors are under Lucrezia’s influence. But yeah, first they’ll have to run.
As usual, Agatha has an idea. She has a device she wants to try! And for that, she’ll need to hammer it down onto the ground. Well, there’s a bear over there. If slamming the device with a hammer wouldn’t break it, I’m sure the bear would be able to do what Agatha wants and not break it.
Tumblr media
Or they could do that, I guess. I’m sure Jagers have thicker bones and general endurance, but still, that must have hurt.
The current problems are interrupted to bring forth an image of winter in Mechanisburg, so far unseen.
Tumblr media
Or at least what it’ll be like in winter once the time bubble is gone. I see poor Moloch is still stuck here, having to shovel the entire walkway. You’re the chief minion, Moloch! You should be able to get somebody else to do this for you, maybe many somebodies.
The device’s function is shown pretty quickly, it sends an electrical charge through the floor and knocks out anyone who is touching it. Pretty effective, and harmless to the public in general. I wonder if the revenants will remember any of this when they wake up.
Regardless, the king is coming! And...he’ll find the wedding celebration all ruined. Agatha better be ready to explain what happened, because if this ruins the relations between these two underground kingdoms, Hoffman’s grades will suffer.
Tumblr media
...why is Cheyenne Wright the king? Goodness, what a curious state of matters. Phil Foglio is a traveling storyteller who suffers misfortune every once in a while, Kaja Foglio is...I remember she’s into opera, and now Cheyenne Wright is an underground civilization monarch. This is great.
Another new year, this time it is 2016. Almost four years of story left for me to read. Now that I think about it, I think I already passed the point Girl Genius was at when I started the liveblog. Somehow I’m catching up, I can’t believe this.
Since Cheyenne Wright here admitted to his allegiance to Lucrezia, he can’t let these witnesses get away, he sends his mooks to go deal with them. As usual, the minions are not prepared to fight impressive people such as Agatha and friends, including newlyfound friends such as Hoffman. As if the minions weren’t already having enough trouble, someone makes the wall explode and knocks Cheyenne Wright out, right when he was yelling something I’m guessing was ‘Stop them all!’ but he only managed to say ‘stop’
Tumblr media
Hah! I like this, but at the same time I’m wondering if lately Agatha has been getting distracted by random stuff too often these days. It’s strange, I don’t remember her doing that before.
Anyway, the person who knocked out the king and saved them is none other than Boris! The four-armed assistant Wulfenbach has. Nice! Honestly I like Boris, if only because he seems interesting. It’s too bad the story doesn’t let him do much, really. He’s nothing more than a trusted secretary. Maybe he’ll get a chance to do more than that.
Getting away isn’t too difficult, I think. Caving the tunnel they used to get in was fine, and even if the king’s minions can dig, this should give Agatha and the rest enough time to put some distance. They’ll be fine, as long as Boris doesn’t try to drag Agatha to Castle Wulfenbach or something.
This whole thing may have been thanks to a lady named Larana, the princess of this kingdom, the one whose father just got unconscious and whose palace exploded. Well at least she seems to be fully on the side that isn’t Lucrezia’s, so that puts her miles above so many people in this place, haha.
Tumblr media
Ah, yeah. Nothing says ‘embarrassing parent’ like your mother taking over your body and also trying to conquer Europa. Also, someone else’s father following her like a cultist. Parents, am I right?
Getting away should be easy, Larana will make the boats they’re not using explode so the minions will have trouble following them. In the middle of all this, Larana shows her obvious crush for Hoffman. Oh boy, Paris truly is the city of love – of clumsy love, hah!
Well this is a bit of short update, but I’ll have to end it here.
Next time: in two updates

Epilogue Thoughts
So, I finished the epilogues at around 11 AM on 4/21 and spent the better part of today mulling over it internally. Overall, I think I liked ‘em. Don’t get me wrong, they were brutal and tragic and ripped my heart out, but this is my garbage and I’m allowed to enjoy it. I was planning on liveblogging the epilogues but constantly pausing to jot down my feelings detracted from the overall experience. This is probably gonna be pretty scattershot, since I have neither the ability nor the desire to order my thoughts properly. Now, without any further preamble, let’s get into it.
Jane
A lot of people said they didn’t like the treatment of Jane in the epilogues, and, fair enough, she was pretty awful and Crocker stans have every right to be pissed. But to anyone saying it came out of left field or didn’t make sense, I’d have to disagree (for the most part). Jane was brainwashed by the Condesce for the first 16 years of her life, and we see the effects of this when she goes Crockertier. She’d almost certainly have baked-in presumptions about how trolls were “meant to be” (ie super violent) even before she was consciously aware that trolls as a race existed. Jane was also always really in denial about having been brainwashed by the Condesce and I can definitely see adult Jane flat-out refusing to do any self-analysis and just assume there are no remaining effects of the brainwashing and she’s “totally cured” now or whatever. Jane’s also not super progressive? Like the conversation where she discovers Dirk has a crush on Jake and that Jake might even reciprocate was pretty uncomfortable to experience, and she starts a business on Earth C even though there’s no real need for corporations in a world with infinite resources. This shows that she’s still stuck in the belief that capitalism is inherently good/necessary for no reason other than “it’s what i grew up with.” All in all I could totally see Jane as someone who’d grow up to become xenophobic and have this colonizer mentality of “I have to regulate the Other because they’re not capable of functioning without me”
As for the non-consensual/rapey stuff... I’m actually not gonna touch that shit with a six-foot pole. The narrative is very explicit in the fact that Jane is an abusive partner and what she’s doing Is Bad, but like if she’s your favourite character you probably aren’t going to be all gung ho about seeing her do all the things that she did, which were admittedly very upsetting to read. I completely understand if you couldn’t read past those parts because they were pretty rough.
The Epilogues do get pretty unpleasant to read though :/
The Epilogues are highly antagonistic towards Homestuck’s readers. This is a fact. Whether this is a good or bad thing is up to interpretation, but it is at the very least not a new thing. Listen to Kate Mitchell of the Perfectly Generic Podcast and YouTuber OptimisticDuelist for more in-depth analysis than I could possibly provide on this, but one of Lord English’s greatest weapons is his ability to get people not to care about Homestuck, or even better, to revile it. That’s what the aspect of Rage represents: Plot Contrivance. As Karkat says,
THERE ARE OUTCOMES THAT ARE EVEN WORSE THAN THE COMPLETE ANNIHILATION OF EXISTENCE ITSELF. FORCES MORE DAMAGING TO THE INTEGRITY OF REALITY THAN THOSE CAPABLE OF TURNING IMAGINATION INTO PURE VOID. THEY ARE FORCES WHICH IF HANDLED RECKLESSLY WILL NULLIFY THE BASIC ABILITY OF INTELLIGENT BEINGS IN ALL REAL AND HYPOTHETICAL PLANES OF EXISTENCE TO GIVE A SHIT.
This is repeated, by Hussie himself no less, later on during his smug self-insert, found here. After Hussie dies and loses control of the narrative, LE is free to try his hardest to get you, the reader, not to give a shit. Rose, in the Epilogue’s Prologue, says that if people stop caring about Homestuck, reality as they know it will break apart, which is exactly in line with LE’s plans. So the fact that the Epilogues are very hostile towards the reader is basically par for the course. That said, I can see how it kinda sounds like I’m being all “oh it’s SUPPOSED to be shitty you wouldn’t underSTAND,” but that’s. literally what’s happening. and there’s evidence for it in the text.
Of course, in the past, when the narrative would pull things like this it would be under the guise of, say, Homosuck, which is very obviously meant to be bad and is presented in a fun, satirical way. The Epilogues, on the other hand, are downright upsetting. They’re presented in a much grittier light, which can obfuscate to what degree it’s Actually A Joke, if it even is a joke in any capacity. The fact that they’re tragic, though, should not be seen as evidence that they’re bad.
Some stuff I Liked
Both routes had some really top-notch interactions in them. A lot of folks seem to be overlooking how genuinely good the writing was. I said the phrase, “they’ve still got it” ALOUD to myself once or twice because the dialogue really did have that good ole Homestuck Charm. The Dave/Karkat/Jade interactions early on in Candy (before everything went to shit) were pretty great, as was basically everything that came out of English’s mouth. I dunno who the Antiquities Consultant was, but they did an excellent job at mirroring Jake’s usual speech pattern. I find that a lot of people, when writing Jake, just kinda throw in as many random old-timey words as possible and as a result it feels kinda disjointed, but the writing team for the epilogues managed to make him feel very... would light be a good way to put it? Sort of airheaded I guess. Just very goofy idk
We got to see Rosemary and they were married and raised a kid and it was the best! Rose was really well-written, as was Kanaya; I really loved seeing those personalities balance each other out again. It was nice to see them be good parents in the Candy-verse. The Vriska they raised was such a fucking scamp too! It was nice to see a Vriska who had a positive home environment but still had that same spunk
Also, Dave. Just, all of Dave. He was really solidly written throughout the whole thing. I fucking love his interest in the economy holy shit. I got to hear Dave Strider say the phrase  “neoliberal austerity measures.” That’s the best. “Economically Aware Anti-capitalist Dave” is rivaled only by “Karkat (True Leftism)”. I’ve seen a few complaints that Dave’s interest in the economy was also OOC, but for one thing he’s an adult and can cultivate new interests if he likes, and for another Dave is a pretty clever kid, and very numerically-minded. (Is that a term? I mean he’s good at maths and such). Don’t forget, not only did he manage to accumulate all the wealth on LOCAH in the span of three days by taking over their stock markets, but he also used the hash map modus in his day to day life, showing that he was able to do calculations in his head as quick as breathing. As shown here, the hash map modus is pretty complex and requires you to come up with a word that has the same value as the thing you wanna use in order to use it. That’s not easy to do on a dime and yet he uses it in his rooftop battles with Bro. All of this is to say, he’d certainly learn to be very good at economics if he wasn’t already. It just suits him.
Oh and I also love that Dave still makes SBaHJ and Karkat has a bunch of sockpuppet accounts he uses to defend Dave’s honour. it’s very cute.
Karkat also had some lines in the epilogues damn. I hadn’t realized how starved I was of VantasRage until I read a few of his rants. Also we finally got to see Badass Rebel Leader Karkat and he’s just as great as we all knew he’d be
The davekat kiss in Meat was great too. It was very gratifying to see after all the narrative cockblocking that went down in Candy.
John realizing in the Candy universe that he isn’t responsible for everything and that they’re all still just people with their own autonomy was good. Much as I have problems with the Candy universe on a whole I liked this specifically.
Also, roxygen! I love roxy/callie as much as the next guy but John and Roxy were very cute near the end of the comic and I liked seeing them grow up and have a kid. John names his son after the guy from Night Court because he’s a massive dweeb. Love it.
We got some great Terezi writing as well. The johnrezi at the end of Meat was nicely written and made me feel a whole host of emotions despite me not even having shipped them that hard beforehand.
OH MY GOD THE OBAMA SHIT. I almost forgot to put this in because I was focused on other stuff but my word the whole Obama Situation was beautiful I loved every second of it. It was so over-the-top in the best way and it simultaneously carried airs of being So Serious And Important To The Narrative and being just the dumbest load of crap. I loved it so much
Also, I was very happy with Roxy and Callie coming out. Roxy talking about how he’d already come out as dating an alien with a green skull for a head and how it felt like maybe he was being “selfish” by also wanting to come out as trans was a great illustration of something that already-out LGB people often feel when realizing they don’t identify with their assigned gender. Additionally, Calliope coming to terms with the fact that they don’t have to identify as female just to further differentiate themselves from Caliborn was great. It really helped to show how far they’d come from just being Caliborn’s foil into being their own person. However, this leads into:
Some stuff I didn’t like
Speaking of Roxy and Callie’s transition, Dirk also came out. As a transphobe. Which was disappointing, to say the least. He made a point of misgendering Roxy as often as possible and was pretty dismissive towards NB people when he learned about Calliope’s identity. (You could make an argument that Dirk is being thoughtless by misgendering Roxy and not intentionally malicious, but I don’t see Dirk as the kind of guy who slips up very often. He’s very careful with language.) I always headcanoned Dirk as trans, as I’m sure most people did, so having him just up and become transphobic was kind of the worst. I intend to talk about Epilogue!Dirk a lot more in a later post but yeah. Not a fan.
EDIT: I’ve thought about the Dirk thing a little more and he does eventually start calling Roxy by the correct pronouns, albeit in kind of a “see see look at how openminded im being youre such a manly dudely stud bro” way. Dirk’s initial discomfort with Roxy and Callie’s identity more comes from his own egotistical belief that he should have already known about it than it does from genuine animosity. That aside, he does still say “She probably would have loved being a “they” when she was a teen,” which sorta rubs me the wrong way. I might just be being oversensitive though.
Also, in the Meat universe, Rose and Kanaya split up! I’m very upset about that. Ultimate Power be damned, I want happy, married lesbians! It sucks that we either have Rosemary OR Davekat but not both
On the topic of davekat, Jade really got done dirty by both Epilogues, huh? She was used as a narrative device in one and was an intrusive presence in the lives of Dave and Karkat in the other. TBH I was never a fan of davekatjade for a lot of reasons but I would have preferred they be in a happy poly relationship than what actually happened in Candy.
Actually, the only two polyamorous relationships in the Epilogues both turned out awfully. I doubt any of the writing staff had anything against poly people; I’m sure it was just a coincidence but either way it’s pretty unfortunate. I have a bit to say about this but this is running too long as is.
Gamzee
Fucking Gamzee.
Unanswered Questions
Will there be any further updates? I sure hope there will, because the ending was not very satisfying and creates more questions than it answers. I can sort of see where it might be going but they left way too much up in the air and it feels very much like it’s unfinished. V has referred to it as “the whole thing” on twitter, so it might be finished for good, but i really hope it isn’t
Why did Rose say the session they’re creating will be the most important session of SBURB ever played? Why couldn’t they play it on Earth C? Surely Earth C’s inhabitants would be more used to seeing alien life forms and would know the basics of SBURB, thus making it more likely for them to survive it. Why go to the trouble of seeding a whole new planet? I’m curious.
Can a character be said to be “Out Of Character” if the character’s own creator wrote those actions? What if they passed on the actual writing to someone else but still had to verify it themselves? What does OOC even mean? Does it mean “this doesn’t fit my headcanon” or “there is no evidence for this” or “the author wouldn’t write them like this”? If it’s the last one, can an author merely saying “this interpretation is correct” absolve ANY action from being deemed OOC? I like that I’m being made to think about this kind of thing now
To what degree is each universe truly “Canon”? I’m aware that Candy lost its canon-ness when John decided not to fight LE, but the two universes are intrinsically linked: we see characters from one universe travel to another and it’s implied that Terezi has spoken to both Johns. How canon is Meat, even? Are either of them even still bound by the need to be part of the Alpha Timeline anymore, since Lord English has been created? What does anything mean?
Final Musings
I understand completely if you don’t like the epilogues. Maybe you think they’re too dark. Maybe you just don’t agree with portrayals of the characters. Maybe you hate that they gave jade a fucking tail when she never had one in the main comic. There certainly were bits of it that I wasn’t a fan of, but there are also parts I really wanna go draw fanart of right now. I like the Epilogues, but if I write fanfic or make dumb joke posts about Earth C, I’m probably gonna ignore large swaths of it (such as, I’ll probably keep both John and Dirk alive, and make them kiss a lot)
There has been a great deal of vitriol directed specifically at Hussie about the epilogues despite the fact that other people worked on them. It’s difficult to take these criticisms in good faith when so many people are blaming solely Hussie. I’m aware that he had total control over actual plot elements and wrote a bit of dialogue, but the bulk of the actual text was written by V. Another thing I’ve noticed is that people’s attitudes towards the epilogues are very much like the general attitude towards Act 7 when it first came out. I’ll admit, I left the Homestuck fandom in like 2014 and didn’t return until mid-2017, but people’s Jimmies were definitely still Rustled even then. There was a general atmosphere of “I hate Hussie, and you should too! The ending was bad and no one asked for it!” but as time went on, and people started analyzing the ending and making meta posts about it, everyone sort of grew acclimated to the ending. Suddenly, the general consensus was that Homestuck was Good Again Finally and the ending was Amazing and The Fandom Loved It. I feel like maybe that sort of thing’s gonna happen again with the Epilogues. I really hope that, as it continues to update (if it does), everyone will sort of chill out about it

The Great Ace Attorney Replay, Apollo Justice Case 2 Part 1
This is also from chatting w/ my gf but she was asleep for the first part so its basically just me talking. endlessly. Again she claims she enjoys this so.
I'll play a little of the second case...oh right they're a talent agency right now. Trucy, Phoenix's adopted daughter, is a magician. She's cute. And also in charge of the business. She's the main source of income for their household at 15. u go girl
Phoenix got hit by a car and went headfirst into a telephone pole but somehow only sprained his ankle. Now we gotta go visit him in the hospital.
wow that is way more Steel samurai dvds than I remember how is Maya affording all this. Oh, it's all the different series there have been like 12 or something by now apparently.
Phoenix: a "kid" I know keeps sending them to me.
Apollo: "Like a niece or nephew?"
Phoenix: "...something like that".
Apollo thinks he's talking about an actual child and is very confused.
More Steel Samurai.
"...I didn't know you were into this stuff, Mr. Wright."
Phoenix: "Well, what else is there to do when you're stuck in bed? They'll just keep piling up if I don't watch them. Now's the only time I get to watch and write my reports."
 Apollo: "...reports?"
Phoenix: It's a long story. Like a lot of things.
omg is Maya making him write essays to her about the episodes she sends him and he's doing it. That's adorable I completely forgot about this.
Phoenix is basically liveblogging his reactions to the Steel Samurai for Maya just like I'm doing to you. we're so connected right now.
I showed Nick my badge and he was like "huh what is that thing" shut the fuck up Nick we know you're being a troll.
Even Apollo called bullshit on that "there's absolutely no way you don't recognize that" "gosh not really it's just been too long i guess"
This game is easy to chatblog to you bc i don’t really care about the plot or anything happening in it all that much, i just care about little things like this. Phoenix being pushed to the point of legitimately being bitter and kinda like "fuck it" is interesting and I'm probably going to mostly pay attention to that situation. Also Trucy and Ema when she shows up, they're both great.
I mean, i like Apollo, he’s good, but the game isn't really about him at all? It's sad because it's supposed to be his game but...it isn't. I mean Phoenix's games were pretty other-character focused but they are people he has strong emotional connections to and how they factor into his life, shaped who he is, and how he helps them and finds out what he can do in the process. There's nothing like that for Apollo in this game, he's just sort of swept along by events that have more to do with Phoenix.
Other games are better about that though. The sixth game that just came out was essentially his game even though Phoenix was in it a lot and gave him a storyline and character arc. So he's not a neglected character now (there are female characters in the series that are way more neglected so fandom whining about his treatment makes me roll my eyes) or anything,it's just this game. being kind of shitty.
So he's really the least interesting part of his own game, just because the game doesn't even focus on him. u don't know why he became a lawyer, what drives him, etc. Later games had to actually have to make that up and give him backstory. It's just kind of hilarious the game actually NAMED for him didn't bother.
So if my chats are more like about other characters, that's why. not just bc you'd be more familiar with them, this game in general is just...seeing how things changed in the timeskip, how people are coping etc is legit more interesting than what's actually going on.
I think Phoenix is dealing with being sad entirely by telling bad jokes constantly and having zero filter on his sarcasm. I feel that.
There is stuff all over his bed. I feel that too. He's not even putting DVDs back in their cases. When this is pointed out he's all "i was actually raised in a barn. don't let word get out, Apollo."
Luci: lool
Caitlin: "Yeah it might ruin your illustrious career of pretending to play the piano" RUDE, Apollo. He ALSO plays poker which is a lot like being in court somehow. according to him. It's a full career.
For all I know he was raised in a barn. we never find out anything about his family. he may have just sprung into existence one day.
omg, Phoenix is all like "if you don't help us Apollo we wont be able to pay our rent or for food.. There's only two people in our talent agency so if one falls the whole thing goes it's symbiotic." PROBABLY THEY'LL BOTH DIE, APOLLO, ARE YOU OKAY WITH THAT.
Luci: is apollo stuck with murder cases for his first trails also
Caitlin: Yes.
Luci: of course
Caitlin; "this isn't an appropriate conversation to be having with your fifteen year old" Oh, but if Trucy's living with Phoenix she has to know dying in poverty is a constant possibility. She's also probably the most together one here.
Phoenix is like "maybe you can find the guy who hit me" and Apollo's like "I'm a lawyer not a detective?" Okay Apollo but if you're going to be in these games you have to realize they are basically the same thing.
Luci: dont worry you dont really "investigate"
its more like breaking and entering, stealing, tampering with a crime scene
that sort of stuff
Caitlin: Now Phoenix is describing the hit and run
"Someone just tried to run me over and then drove away, pretty creepy right?"
"Almost as creepy as you talking about it like it's not a big deal."
He's been through a lot, Apollo. Attempted murder is just part of life in Ace Attorney land you get used to it.
"Anyway here's where the ~tragedy~ took place" Phoenix jesus christ someone trying to kill you is not funny. The *tells uncomfortable jokes" bit for hobo Phoenix in the "tag urself which Phoenix are you meme" is even more accurate than I remembered.
oh I remember this part. FUN WITH LOCALIZATIONS. So our client is a "noodle stand" guy- and in the original Japanese of course Maya and Nick would always be hitting up the ramen stand and the implication is it was this guy's, especially since he says "he and his assistant used to come by a lot in his attorney days"
but in the localization it was always burgers so that comment just comes out of nowehere
the walls are breaking down

Skyrim liveblog: Windhelm, Winterhold, Falkreath
Wait a second, when I clicked on Ulric to check out what he has to say for himself up to I didn't mean to tell him "I came to fight the Empire"! Fuck no, I came here to get Destruction training from his wizard.
I really don't get what I'm supposed to do in this town btw. It's dark, cold and full of racists. The only intriguing thing I've heard here is about a child trying to summon the Dark Brotherhood (what? I thought they were an assassin guild, this makes them sound like spirits) and the string of murders of women, but I didn't recieve quests to investigate either of these.
Popped back to Riverwood to train archery... and got attacked by a dragon. I hope none of the NPCs died, it's really hard to tell in this game...
After another hour of walking around, I ran out of patience and hired a carriage to Winterhold, where I've been meaning to go for the past couple of (real-life) days. I'd have done it earlier if I knew that fast-travelling to undiscovered locations for a fee was an option... It was a truly immersive moment when I came to Winterhold not even realizing there's anything else but the College there, and the locals started to judge my character for that.
I love how tiny and poor the Jarl's residence is. And the abyss and the College floating unnaturally in the middle of it realy do look awe-inspiring. Another point for immersion: I came here to become a better enchanter and mage in general to get more profit and defeat enemies easier. Somehow I didn't expect it to be as humbling as visiting an actual university. This quiet and majestic place and the serious scholars make me feel small and stupid for coming here for selfish mundane reasons. I enjoyed walking slowly in third person for the same reason.
But this game doesn't let me gush about immersion for long. First I couldn't find the way to the next part of the quest, wandered into a cave, got killed repeatedly by falmer and their insect pets, gave up and fell back, immediately after exiting the cave got attacked by two dragons, took down a bunch of necromancers with great difficulty. When I finally found Saarthal, turned out two of the three students got stuck in the college hall for some reason and I had to teleport them to me through console. They were also the last to walk through the door, and I stayed behind to make sure they actually go in, like "I'm watching you, assholes".
Finally, a quest to investigate the Windhelm murders! I lost hope to ever see this storyline levels ago... AND I just encountered a weapon with Banish (the most valuable enchantment in the game, according to the internet) for the second time and now had enough money to buy it!
This quest is dumb. I had to google how to examine the crime scene. Couldn't you just put "follow the blood trail" in the game itself instead of putting a quest marker on a non-interactable object? I wouldn't even have noticed that blood, and it was very difficult to see against the ground, especially with Windhelm's bad lighting.
"Sounds like the court mage's been experimenting" Wait, what? Can't there be another wizard hiding in this city? I thought we'll have to search for a suspect... Not lose one of the few useful assets in this place.
Ah, the curiosities collector says this should belong to the court mage. Okay. Shouldn't the game force me to talk to him first, then?
"[The Butcher] has been a trusted friend to Ulric for many years" That doesn't exactly make me like him more
This was so underwhelming that I went to the wiki to check if that's really all and spoiled the rest of the quest for myself lol
I can't sell the amulet after using it as evidence, but can sell it and then use as evidence...
Awkward interactions on the road:
I meet a random person who announces they hunt down daedra -- five minutes after I survive a very tough vampire fight only with the help of Sanguine Rose. "Uh, sure :) Very noble :) I'll be going now if you don't mind"
My housecarl of 70+ hours just yelled "Your kind has no place here" at an Argonian... Maybe it's finally time to choose a different follower.
Yoo I have finally discovered Falcreath! It never occured to me to go south... I actually like this region a lot, it's so nice and full of flowers.
Bad things about Falkreath: they're Stormcloaks
Good things about Falkreath: they're goths obsessed with death. Ghisharen would be at home here...
Met three Thalmor on the road, thought "It's a shame I just can't kill them in the broad daylight", got into a conversation with them and they attacked me. Well, they asked for it...
The talking dog quest confused me. I thought the blacksmith lost his dog? But apparently the "master" that dog referred to is some daedra, and the blacksmith had nothing to do with any of this. Well I have no reason to help daedra, and if this isn't one of the quests to help Falkreath then I'm outta here, bye. At least I cleared out the vampires from that cave (with great pains, see above).
Also the game is practically forcing me to do another quest and go on a wild goose chase after some stag because it gave me a ring I cannot unequip. Spent like half an hour searching, then the quest marker moved. I climbed over a mountain. The map said he was right in front of me, couldn't see. 5F, random arrow in that direction, thankfully I see movement. F9, now I know where he is, switch to my best arrow, crouch. It's one hit kill or another chase -- thankfully, I managed the former.
And while I was talking to that stupid spirit, I saw flame arrows zooming past my screen. Apparently a flame atronach attacked us. Okay...
Also I continue to be confused by the daedra's nonsense. Did he just ask me to kill the guy who gave me the quest in the first place? Why would I do that? I went to all this trouble to help that dude, why the hell would I kill him?
Well, at least I can side with the werewolf. Though it makes me kill way more people for the great sin of... being easily influenced, I guess?
"You'll make a fine rug, cat"? Okay, Lydia is seriously too racist too keep.
"I defy you and your vile tasks" Ha, hell yeah!
NPC: "You'd really risk your life?!" Me: Yeah, I just hope the enemies big souls because I'm out of petty gems

god, the premise of Ace Attorney really does just boil down to "what if courtroom drama functioned like shonen battle anime" and you have to respect it for that

this entire time they've been talking about how expensive the food is, a lobster plate that costs $20????? a meal that costs $45????
...I always forget how bad inflation's been, but like, eesh, that's just what food costs now

...I doubt he'd ever use this particular pet name again, but in the context of Wrightworth, can you imagine him calling Miles something equally sicklysweet and Miles spit-taking coffee all over the wall?

one thing i really love about the Ace Attorney Trilogy is the way that sprite reuse means we get to see people grow and change in ways that we wouldn't necessarily expect
Lotta getting swapped in any time they need a photographer, Adrian Andrews going from being a celebrity manager to a museum exhibit manager, Larry being... Larry...
It all really adds up to make a world that feels alive.

oh man I'm so excited to unravel this mystery
I've been joking about Dahlia Hawthorne Transition Arc, but I legitimately have no idea what Godot's problem is with us
I know it won't all come out until Case #4 but I am intrigued by any breadcrumb we might get until then

this entire cross-examination has just been Phoenix Wright and Luke Atmey roasting each other for being neurodivergent in a way that's very satisfying to watch
