Ok I think I’m up to date….
1. HOLY SHIT WOMAN! You had Covid and just learned about it? How did you find out? Was it with a test? And you handled the asshat at the grocery store way better than I would have. I’m not patient, nor diplomatic, and I have major RBF syndrome… The temper goes with the face more ofter than I care to admit…
2. Your grandmother’s story was incredible. I know you don’t need another project but this could be a beautiful book. No fandom incorporated, just her story.
3. As @mollage said, the Universe is after you! But you may be one of the strongest woman I know, going through all your adventures with that attitude. Thank you Elizabeth for passing down your fiery spirit!
4. With everything that happened to you in the last few weeks, I can’t expect you to write anything. I’ll just wait and take what you give us. Fuck, I just have to deal with Baby Girl’s online school - Big Boy is responsible enough to deal with his class mostly alone - and I have to tell her to go back to the computer every 5 minutes and I’m going NUTS! And we have one more month to go…
Ontario has been in stay-at-home order since April 8th, and non-essential stores MAY reopen mid-June at 15% capacity and outdoor activities in small groups MAY resume IF we have 60% of population vaccinated with their first dose. We’re about 58% now according to Health Minister but they stopped giving Aztra as first dose, so all the pharmacies that could give it now can’t. There’s a lot less Pfizer and Moderna doses available so I don’t know how fast it will happen. But it means I will most likely get my second dose quicker than August. Yay me! Second phase won’t happen until we get 70% 1st dose vaccination. So we’re stuck for a while. We’re going out in the woods for walks once in a while so we don’t get too close to people but I want to go to a fabric store sooooo bad!! I’m done picking ticks off hubby everytime we get out.  And I’m running out of crafts to learn on youtube.
Ok, enough ranting…  gotta go finish knitting Baby girl’s bday gift. A 6" turtle. With clothes. And a shawl. And boots. Yeah… Love ya!
*******************************************************
Fudgey!!
Yup. All four of us had covid back in November of 2019, before it broke wide and before anyone really knew it was in the US. Husband was able to track it back to a coworker who’d returned from a family visit to China (he works with a large community of Asian Americans who travel back and forth a lot). The coworker came home sick, and shortly after that our household got the worst “flu” any of us have ever had (that was what we thought it was, a weirdly violent flu that hit each of us differently). I’ve never been sicker in my life, my husband thought I was going to die and he claims I told him to just let me go if it looked like I wasn’t going to make it. I’m pretty sure I meant it…it was that bad. I may have actually requested an assist to the other side at one point.
So anyway, a little while later it broke wide and when the symptom lists started coming out we started wondering if that wasn’t what we’d had. Husband finally a few weeks ago went and talked to the guy that had come back sick from overseas and the guy said “Oh yeah, I had the covid, did you get it too?”
By that time there had been approximately 150 known cases at husband’s workplace and six confirmed deaths from it. Grrrr.
At this point it was too late for us to get confirmed, but husband contacted a friend in Colorado who is a covid specialty ER nurse and described our symptoms and the timeframe of our illness to her. She said we absolutely had it - she’d had it too during that same timeframe, before it broke wide and before anyone knew what it was.
So now all my lingering weird-ass symptoms make sense. Big and Little are fine, they don’t seem to have any long-term problems, though I’m keeping an eye on them (especially Big). Husband is fine as well. Me? I took it in the seat of the pants, but like I was telling someone the other day, as soon as one of the longhaul clinics sets up here I’m gonna be there.
The putz in the grocery store was nothing unusual for here. What really gets me is the way people glare at us for continuing to wear masks - it’s almost scary. WTF is wrong with people.
Glad you liked my grandma’s story. Honestly I don’t know enough to write a book about her without having to speculate on a lot of in-between stuff because she was a very secretive person (probably for a good reason tbh) but what a tale it would be. She was a mess :D My mother has always been mad at me for taking after her - she never liked my grandmother much, there was some bad blood between them from decades back, and yeah that’s kind of a good story too lol
Ah, speaking of writing, I’m going to toss out a short chap of that silly self indulgent side-thing for The Department tonight (probably as soon as I send this reply off) and then I’m shooting for a chapter of the actual fic tomorrow at some point. Taking advantage of the husbandary absence (yes I know that’s not a word but it works)
I feel ya on the homeschooling - the boys finished their semester two weeks ago and the stress of that final week for Big (9th grade) was insane.
I wish we were under a stay-at-home order, but where I live hardly anyone obeyed it when we WERE. I love living here but I swear sometimes the people make me want to move off-planet just to find a higher intelligence demographic.
Anyway, I gotta see this turtle when you’re finished with it. You mentioned it so now you gotta show it. I’m going to bug you every day until you provide pictures because even though I can crochet a blanket like nobody’s business I cannot crochet a doll to save my own ass. Gonna have to rely on you for that ;P

'I truly believe that we are ready': N.S. to lift all COVID-19 restrictions on March 21
The Nova Scotia government is moving up its timeline for easing public health restrictions.
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston says, if the province continues to stay on its current course, all COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines will be lifted on March 21.
"This is significant and I know, as much as this is the news so many have been waiting for, there are many others who will be extremely nervous by that news," said Houston during a COVID-19 news conference Wednesday. "We can all agree this has been a long, long run.
"Now, it's time to stop pulling the big levers, like broad restrictions, and shift to personal actions and responsibility. We all know what to do to protect ourselves and one another, and it's time to get back to the people and things we love."
The province is also making adjustments to guidelines in Phase 1 – the phase Nova Scotia is currently in.
Effective Monday, people will no longer be required to provide proof of full vaccination before participating in non-essential, discretionary events and activities.
Other restrictions under Phase 1 will remain in place.
"This does not mean COVID-19 is gone," said Dr. Robert Strang, the province's chief medical officer of health. "There is still lots of virus in communities and as we lift restrictions, our choices and actions become even more important. They will be the tools that we have to limit the spread of COVID-19 and protect those around us who are more vulnerable."
The province's top doctor says he understands Wednesday’s announcement may make some Nova Scotians uneasy.
"Now it is time to move away from two years of crisis response and approach living with COVID in a long-term and manageable manner," Strang said. "There is risk of course, but that would be true if we did it last week, or two months from now. There is no textbook that lays out exactly when, and how to do this. It's a balance."
"I truly believe that we are ready, that Nova Scotians are ready."
PHASE 2 STARTS MARCH 7
Nova Scotia is scheduled to enter Phase 2 of its reopening plan on March 7.
"Phase 2 will last for two weeks and we will be monitoring our usual indicators closely during that time, and if everything remains stable, we will move to Phase 3 on March 21," said Strang. "At that point, restrictions and mandates will end."
In Phase 2, the following restrictions will be in place:
GATHERING LIMITS
The informal gathering limit will be 25 people from the same household or close social group indoors and 50 outdoors.
The formal gathering limit will be 75 per cent capacity, with physical distancing as much as possible. This applies for gatherings hosted by a recognized business or organization such as special events, sports, receptions, performances, movie theatres, meetings, training, weddings, funerals and faith gatherings.
Large venues can operate at 75 per cent capacity, with a maximum of 5,000 people, with physical distancing as much as possible.
BUSINESSES
Licensed establishments, restaurants and casinos can return to regular hours and operate at 75 per cent capacity, with physical distancing as much as possible.
VLTs can continue operating with two metres of physical distance between people at machines.
Fitness and recreation facilities and recreation and leisure businesses can operate at 75 per cent capacity, with physical distancing as much as possible.
Personal services businesses - such as hair salons, barber shops, spas, nail salons and body art establishments - can operate at full capacity, with physical distancing as much as possible. Services that require removing masks can also be offered in Phase 2.
Retail stores and malls can operate at full capacity, with physical distancing.
SPORTS, ARTS AND CULTURE
Sports teams can have practices, games, competitions and tournaments with up to 60 participants, including players and officials. Spectators are allowed, following the formal gathering limit.
Performing arts can have rehearsals, performances and competitions with up to 60 participants, including performers and crew. Spectators are allowed, following the formal gathering limit.
Libraries and museums can operate at full capacity, with physical distancing.
MASKING
Masks will continue to be required in indoor public places. They can be lowered or removed for things like eating and drinking or doing a physical activity that's difficult while wearing a mask.
People can resume lowering their masks to eat or drink in their seats at sports games, movies, concerts and other events.
People who test positive for COVID-19 during Phase 2 will still be required to self-isolate, but they will no longer be required to notify close contacts outside of their household.
Public health notes that all restrictions at public schools will remain in place until the end of March break.
"The measures that are in place now, such as cohorting and masking, will remain the same until March break. And when students and teachers return on March 21, it will be to schools and classrooms with no restrictions or required measures," said Strang.
At acute-care and long-term care facilities, restrictions on visitation and in other areas will be determined through infection control and occupational health processes at each facility.
Strang said, in addition to the changes in restrictions, the province’s last daily COVID-19 news release will be issued on March 4. After that, the province will release a weekly report on the COVID-19 situation.
DROP IN HOSPITALIZATIONS
The province did not report any new deaths or outbreaks related to the virus on Wednesday.
To date, Nova Scotia has reported 191 COVID-19-related deaths.
Health officials are reporting three new hospital admissions and four discharges related to COVID-19.
Public health says there were 49 people in hospital Wednesday who were admitted due to COVID-19 and are receiving specialized care in a COVID-19 designated unit. That number is down from 53 people on Tuesday.
Of the 49 people in hospital:
11 are in intensive care
the age range is 18 to 96 years old
the median age is 67

hi my lovely friends and followers, i have to ask something of y’all that i really really hate asking, but desperate times...desperate measures.
a lot of you know that my main source of income is from my job in theater, and i have mentioned before that my theater is following the lead of the rest of the industry and remaining closed until april 13th. we all know that reopening on april 13th is incredibly unlikely at this point, and the reality is that my workplace and the rest of the theater district will be closed indefinitely until this passes. while i have been assured that, as of right now, i will have a job to return to, i am not being paid during this shutdown.
most of you also know i work in a bookstore on my off-hours as a way to have some extra money on the side. with my theater being closed, i unfortunately realized i would have to try and depend on this extra money to pay for my rent, my groceries, etc. we were informed yesterday that we were intending to stay open no matter the circumstance, and if we were forced to close, not only would we not be paid or taken care of, most of us would be laid off effective immediately. (great company, right? we love a middle finger to the working class in the middle of a pandemic! risk getting yourself and others sick or lose your job and starve!)
with our governor officially mandating today that all non-essential businesses MUST close (the right decision for everyone’s health), i just received the call that i have in fact lost my survival job. so unless this miraculously all ends soon, i have absolutely no income for the foreseeable future and i am at a loss for what to do except apply for unemployment, break into my savings, and hope for some leniency when it comes to my bills.
all this to say: my venmo is JPC15. if anyone wants to throw a buck or two my way, i will forever be indebted to you. this is a scary time and a month ago i was mostly worried about when i’d see mean girls again and honestly did not see myself struggling to pay rent or buy food but...this is where we are. you can reblog this also. no pressure or anything, but i’m down to the point where i need to put this out there.
lots of love to you guys and i’ll try to be around here as much as possible so we can weather this together.

18 June 2020, Fakenham Garden Centre, Norfolk, visited by the Duchess of Cambridge
19 June 2020, Smiths the Bakers, Norfolk, visited by the Duke of Cambridge
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As non-essential shops start reopening in parts of the UK, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited two independent businesses to hear how they have been impacted by coronavirus, and how they are returning to a new normal. The Duke of Cambridge visited Smiths the Bakers, who have been serving Kings Lynn for 50 years. With the owners of the bakery and members of staff, The Duke spoke about how coronavirus restrictions have impacted on the family-run business, with 80% of the company’s wholesale customers having to close their own operations. The Duchess of Cambridge visited Fakenham Garden Centre, where she met the centre’s owners, before speaking to staff members, and heard more about the measures which that the garden centre has implemented to ensure that customers are able to visit and shop safely. The Duke and Duchess’ visits come as The Queen, Patron of the British Chambers of Commerce, sent a message of support to business communities as they continue to reopen — visit @theroyalfamily to read Her Majesty’s message.
via Kensington Palace instagram
I loved seeing these two out and about these past two days. But these above shots really capture our world’s new normal--standing 6 feet apart at all times, no touching or friendly gestures, and that Plexiglas screen between the bakers/cashier at Smiths and Prince William to protect each other when standing closer than 6 feet apart.
I appreciate these two getting on with it and back to normal even though we are the farthest from normal. I also appreciate, as someone who has two family business’s in my family, that they shined a spotlight on these business owners who were no doubt suffering. This has not been an easy time for anyone.
Will and Kate made some purchases while on their visits to support these local businesses. It looks like Will bought bread and Kate purchased herbs.
Tumblr media
Before we talk about Catherine’s clothes, because I have a lot of thoughts, look at this adorable cake Smiths the Baker’s presented to William! His birthday is on June 21st and I love that there are footballs and cleats on his cake, how cute!
Tumblr media
Now Catherine’s fashion! Outfit details real quick
Jaeger Aqua Linen shirt (repeat)
FJÄLLRÄVEN Sörmland Dark Olive Padded Vest (new to us)
Massimo Dutti Chocolate Skinny Fit High-Rise Satin Trousers (new to us)
Superga Cotu trainers in Sherwood Gum (new to us)
Monica Vinader green onyx earrings (repeat)
I’ve been wondering for a very, very, very long time about the wardrobe Kate has available to her at Anmer Hall. I’m assuming KP is where everything typically is stored and from the previous Zoom calls it looks like Kate retires a lot of pieces to AH as we’ve been seeing repeats from years ago.
Its got me wondering, are all these new piece’s she’s wearing, are they really new? Or have they been at AH for her to wear all this time and we just never see them?
If they continue to stay at AH, its going to be interesting to see what she pulls together for other engagements. As I’m not in the UK, drop me a line and let me know if movement between homes/families is acceptable now, maybe Kate’s getting things brought from KP.
What are you guys thoughts? Too soon to be doing engagements? Or are you glad they’re keeping calm and carrying on?

Happy holidays Ms. Bear. Have you found any silver linings this year?
Dearest Anon;
Happy Holidays! If you were celebrating any and all things during December, I hope that it was done safely and with care.
Silver linings... implies a bit of a cloudy situation to begin with. Which isn’t untrue, especially for this year (garbage-y year altogether).
However, now’s as good a time to recap 2020 as any other. I know from my tumblr timelines that I dropped off the face of the Earth since last winter (when you may have last asked a question).
I began locking down socializing and general gadding about in mid February 2020 because I was aware that the virus was already present in East Asia and virulent and the likelihood of it travelling over to North America wasn’t a matter of (could it?) but when. I had Cow-Irkers that were doubtful to my admonitions on logistic expectations on products we were expecting to begin transport in February 2020. I said: First, giant parts of China are now in lockdown, no movement, no factory operations, our order will be completed and shipped when the factories reopen and things roll again). I said this in the capacity of my own functions (procurement) combined with the fact that I was aware of news that was overnight (Asian news channels) and rarely if ever making it to mainstream/North American channels of any sort.
I began WfH in early March (already had the laptop, but needed to pick up a second screen and other dangly parts) and it continued on a serious basis all throughout the spring and the summer. I would go into the workspace once a week (on Thursdays) to address matters that could wait (or required me in person). During the summer, I went in two days a week: Tuesdays and Thursdays. By late summer, it was fully back into the office and has continued until two weeks ago when I took the balance of my yearly vacation time and will be out of office for three weeks.
My province is now on an overall lockdown (no non-essential travels/activities) until late January 2021. I packed up my laptop on my last day in office and suspect that I may go back to WfH again in January as the case counts are running amok (AGAIN). :(
In the mean time, I’ve probably drawn attention to my postal efforts with the ordering of massive amounts of masks and other PPE during the spring (for my shop employees). I was placing orders on both the business side (existing vendors) and also through consumer channels. My consumer orders took anywhere from 6-8 weeks to travel. My business orders did not travel much faster simply because the supply chain is global and people were all ordering the same sorts of things.
There was no theatre-going this year. :( No travelling this year (and none planned for the next year that is 2021). I remain ever hopeful that I will be able to see Patti Lupone/Katrina Lenk in Company in New York City but I don’t know how the ducks will line up.
I probably spent too much of the summer very agitated about an election process that wasn’t mine, nor could I vote in it. I was very chuffed to see the nomination of Kamala Harris but at the same time, I wish that D’s had shown more support for their candidates earlier in the primaries. I really liked the ideas from Liz Warren and hope that some of them will be adopted by the incoming Biden Administration.
In the meantime, I’ve fallen into the Reddit rabbithole that is r/foodporn - even if I can’t taste it, I can always appreciate lovely food. ;-)
I think I’ve spent more time reading things (online and off) than watching things this year. No cinema visits but I’m not sure if Ma Rainey will get a hardcopy release of some sort because I haven’t been able to figure out Netflix to my own satisfaction :/
Would these be considered silver linings? I hope so. The year has been tremendously tough on everyone. I never thought I’d have to engage in continuous public health education efforts with a shop full of grown ups all older than I. Yes, lessons on why hand washing is important, lessons on why lighting up/smoking as you are using hand sanitizers is to be discouraged (especially the alcohol based kinds), lessons on why you have to wear masks and face coverings and maintain physical distancing.
As the challenges of the pandemic continue, I can only do my small parts which mainly come back to: not socializing beyond this household, wear masks, maintain physical distancing (my elbows have gotten good exercises this year), and regular hand hygiene. Masks in all pockets, hand sanitizers in the bag, car, desk, and other pocket, and I swear, even after this all comes to an end, I’ll probably keep wearing masks. Apparently people can’t tell if I’m frowning at them when I wear a mask... ;-)
Trusting this answers (in part) your questions, I remain,
-pdt

guy, I don’t talk about politics here for the most part because this is my dumb pokemon/meme blog/sometimes I talk about horses
but what is happening in my state is very serious and so many I know, love, my clients, my friends, my family and myself could very possibly die because of what is happening.
PA just voted to reopen the state. we are due for a SPIKE in the virus this week. they want to send everyone back to work right away. our governor is very pro-people being alive and shut down all non essential businesses on march 19, my job included.
the pa house voted on whether or not to open the state on an “honor system” of people following social distancing. ALL of the democrats voted AGAINST it and all but 2 republicans voted to in 107-95. because mOnEy
I am TERRIFIED of going back to work right now. I had a panic attack earlier reading through the news on what was happening. they are making a decision tomorrow i am very bad at politics but the senate has to vote on it now then idk what.
the economy will recover. they are literally putting money over people’s lives right now. it is going to get worse here if this happens. this is so disgusting. i cannot fathom that they are putting money over people’s LIVES. HEALTHY PEOPLE ARE DYING FROM THIS. THIS IS NOT THE FLU!!!! THIS IS VERY VERY SERIOUS. THIS IS A PANDEMIC. PEOPLE ARE DYING.
i have never been so terrified of something in my life. i have no control over this. i do not want more people to die. I was very supportive of our gov’s decision to shut down pretty much everything, we have seen a decline because of it. but now, during the SPIKE, they (the republicans) want to reopen everything. I have not stopped shaking since this all started like 6 hours ago. i am so upset, so angry, so DISGUSTED. money is replaceable, people’s lives are NOT. they don’t give a shit about us. i seriously have no idea what to do right now. i am not going to be able to sleep tonight. you will get a new job. you will get more money. it will be okay. maybe it will be rough for a while but you will be okay. but you can’t stimulate the economy if you’re dead!!!!!!!!

I’m having a really hard time gathering my thoughts about this. I’m just going to vent here, maybe it will help. I’m sorry it’s all really jumbled.
What I feel mostly is fear.
I also feel sad and angry.
I never had much faith in humanity before the pandemic,(especially since I work in retail), but now it’s so much worse.
I’ve read a lot of “if you’re scared, stay home, but stop telling the rest of us what to do.”
The thing is, I’m willing to compromise. I think liquor stores and fast food places are non-essential. However, I also think those places are helping people cope with the pandemic, so I don’t fight back much on people who don’t want to stay home. They can go outside and enjoy life, as long as they wear a mask.
It’s the anti-maskers that scare me the most. They scare me even more than the virus in some ways. Their selfish sense of entitlement hurts me deeply.
And because of people who feel that a piece of cloth on their face is infringing on their constitutional rights, I am absolutely terrified to go back to work.
Thankfully my governor hasn’t given the go ahead to reopen non essential businesses in my county, so currently this is not an issue for me. I’m just thinking about the future.
And...I can’t just stay home if I’m scared.
I’ve kicked around some ideas of what I might do if I’m at work and I encounter a customer who refuses to wear a mask.
1. Tell them I am uncomfortable and get someone else to help them.
2. Visibly show signs of being uncomfortable and hope they take the hint.
3. Hide.
4. Cry and run away.
I’m sure at least a couple of these options will get me into trouble. But why is it expected of me to tolerate and respect those without a mask, when they don’t respect me enough to wear one?
It’s just, fear and panic, and helping others through these tough times, it’s part of being a good person.
I have asthma, and I don’t take care of it really, but that’s another story. I wear my mask (and wear it properly over my nose) whenever I go outside my apartment.
One time I wore it to walk around a local park and by the end of my walk, I was panting pretty hard. My head hurt a little, so I went to my car, took off my mask, and blasted the a/c. Sure, I was uncomfortable, but that experience doesn’t make me feel like I shouldn’t have to wear a mask again. I just need to plan better next time, maybe take a shorter walking route until my body gets used to the mask.
I always wear my mask when I think I’ll have a chance of encountering another person. Not because I love wearing it, but because I care enough to help the other person feel more at ease. I see masks as a reasonable compromise.
It’s...I don’t know. I’m trying to think of a comparison that makes sense.
Like, if someone came to my house and told me they were terrified of cats, I wouldn’t try to get them to love mine. My cat is the sweetest, and she loves people. Everyone who has ever visited has fallen in love with my cat, but none of that matters. If my guest is scared, it would be rude of me to try to make them suddenly get over their fear. I would put my cat in the bedroom, and entertain my guest in the living room. Or we could leave and go somewhere else.
Okay, I’m slowly leading up to it. Some people have panic attacks because of wearing a mask. Should they still wear one?
Well, yeah.
I’m sorry, and I hope this doesn’t hurt too many feelings. I’m not saying that a mask can’t be traumatic. I truly feel for those who are suddenly faced with this new normal and have to learn to cope with it. It must be very difficult. But coping skills can help, as well as self care.
Like I said, I work retail.
My personal space bubble is much larger than a lot of people’s. When people stand too close to me or squeeze past me in an aisle, I hyperventilate. When this happens too many times in a row, I have to run off to the break room and drink copious amounts of water in order to calm down.
Yeah, I know I need a new job.
I get really irritated when people violate my own personal space rules that they couldn’t possibly have known about, but I don’t expect that I shouldn’t have to still learn to interact with the public because I have trauma.
Being allowed to take breaks, that’s a compromise. Having to get back out there and work despite being uncomfortable/fearful? Well...that’s life.
Which is why I will go back to work when the time comes, despite my fears of encountering someone who refuses to wear a mask.
It just makes me feel really sad that people out there refuse to think of or care about others. When I see someone not wearing a mask, or not wearing their mask properly I now automatically conclude that they are selfish.
Maybe that’s wrong. Maybe I shouldn’t judge. But it’s so hard not to when I read these terrible arguments made by anti-maskers. It’s also hard knowing how hard I’ve worked to stabilize my mental health between last year and this year, and seeing people yell and scream over a simple cloth mask just makes me feel like nothing matters anymore.

Canada-U.S. border restrictions expected to remain in place until at least Dec. 21: sources
The COVID-19 travel restrictions in place at the Canada-U.S. land border are expected to remain in effect for at least another month, sources tell CTV News.
The current agreement on the U.S.-Canada border closure to non-essential travel was first imposed in March to limit the spread of the virus. The restrictions have been renewed every month since. The current extension is set to expire on Nov. 21, but sources tell CTV News that the measures are set to be renewed through to Dec. 21.
Tourists and cross-border visits remain prohibited, although trade and commerce are exempted as are certain family members and loved ones who can make a case on compassionate grounds to be allowed into Canada from the U.S., as well as from other countries, under a series of stipulations.

Without confirming that the cross-border closure extension had been agreed to, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair’s office told CTVNews.ca that the decision about continuing the closures for another month “will be made in Canada, with the best interest of Canadians as our top priority.”
With COVID-19 cases continuing to climb on both sides of the border, the decision to continue restricting travel is not surprising, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and health officials have said over the course of the pandemic that until the spread is under control, easing up on the border measures would be a risk to citizens in both countries.
The agreement, as it stands, exempts vital health-care workers such as nurses who live and work on opposite sides of the border, as well as truck drivers transporting goods into Canada. According to new figures from the Canada Border Services Agency, since March Canada has admitted approximately 5.3 million travellers, most of them essential workers, who have been exempted from the mandatory 14-day quarantine to control the spread of COVID-19.
In September, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Canada wanted to see the border reopened, while Canadian officials said that decision will be made based on public health advice.
“We're looking at the border with Canada. Canada would like it open, and you know we want to get back to normal business,” Trump said at the time.
Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam has previously said the assessment of when it will be safe to allow recreational travel to resume between Canada and the U.S. is ongoing, and that Canadian health officials are in regular contact with U.S. public health authorities, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Tam has also stated that the first step would be carefully reopening travel restrictions within Canada, such as lifting the Atlantic bubble.

Kuehl Happenings
Sheila Kuehl
The events of the past week have deeply affected our entire nation and laid glaringly bare a system that has simultaneously profited off of and devalued black men and women. The murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd have again ripped open a centuries-old wound that has never fully healed.
I began this week by convening my entire staff by phone. We meet virtually every morning to update each other but this morning would be different. Many of my staff have spent decades in the trenches as activists and advocates. Some of them have personal experience of the corrosive effects of white supremacy and racism. Like so many, they are carrying a heavy burden of grief and anger, and we are all feeling an overwhelming mix of emotions. The stories were very personal, the experiences still raw, and there were plenty of tears, anger, and support. Most importantly we know we will do even more as policy makers and service providers to build a more just and peaceful Los Angeles.
We are grieving the loss of so many people of color at the hands of police, some with names we will never know.
We are angry that it took the shocking image of a murderous policeman kneeling on the neck of a black man to show the country, once again, the shameful legacy of racism in law enforcement.
We are, sadly, unsurprised by the glaring lack of leadership from the federal government, and horrified by the reckless stoking of division coming from our racist and incompetent president.
We are mystified that, in some places, even now, in 2020, textbooks still teach that the Civil War was about states' rights, and are devoid of any meaningful mention of Jim Crow laws, redlining, or any other historical building blocks of this country's foundational racism.
We are heartbroken but we are also hopeful. We are proud of the vast majority of protesters who are speaking out against racism and police brutality through peaceful, nonviolent demonstrations.
We are touched by the power of communities banding together to clean up and support their destroyed businesses.
We are fiercely determined to do what responsible governments can do. We are currently developing the next steps to advance the plan for alternatives to incarceration adopted by the Board in March, so we can create a "care first, jails last" system that will provide care and treatment instead of jail whenever possible.
Black Lives Matter. I will continue to use my power and privilege to advance criminal justice reform and dismantle institutional racism. I hope I can count on you to join me.
COVID-19: GET TESTED!
Meanwhile, the pandemic is still with us. Nearly three months ago, the County issued a Safer at Home order to avoid a surge in our hospitals. Thanks to millions of people staying home, we flattened the curve.
But we still face significant dangers, especially for those venturing out to the beach, to restaurants, or to protest. We received a variance from the state based on our work in dealing with the pandemic, which means the County Department of Public Health can mirror all the state’s decisions and begin a limited reopening. Over the next few weeks, the Department of Public Health will scrutinize the daily case numbers to ensure that we have not opened too far too fast.
Testing is critical to help us slow the spread of COVID-19 and get medical attention to those who need it. Testing is free for everyone, and there is no insurance required. If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath, or cough, we encourage you to get tested.
You can also get tested if you are not experiencing symptoms, but only if you are 65 or older, have chronic underlying conditions, are an essential worker, or live in an institutional congregate living setting such as a nursing home or homeless shelter.
CANOGA PARK BRIDGE HOUSING
This week, construction and renovations began for the new Bridge Housing program in Canoga Park!
LA Family Housing, a leader among homeless service providers, will carry out renovations and operate the facility.
Over the past six years, the West San Fernando Valley has seen an increase in homelessness, but little help has been available in the area. People experiencing homelessness are forced to travel many miles, which may not always be feasible, to access bridge housing and other resources.
Once completed, the site will provide a much-needed path out of homelessness for people living on the streets and in cars in the West Valley, giving them a safe place to call home as they move towards stable, permanent housing.
I am so deeply appreciative of the Canoga Park community's support throughout this process to help our neighbors experiencing homelessness and for Councilmember Bob Blumenfield's partnership on this project.
ECONOMIC RESILIENCY TASK FORCE
This week's Economic Resiliency Task Force meeting featured presentations from four of the thirteen identified sectors: Sports and Large Venues, Business-Corporate and Manufacturing, Restaurants and Hospitality, and Film & Digital Media.
All sectors are eager to open in the interest of preserving jobs but are committed to following state and local health guidelines in order to protect workers and customers. A phased approach is necessary for most, and each report included the creative changes businesses would need to make in order to adhere to current health guidelines.
For example, restaurants allowed to open immediately are asking permission from their local authorities to expand table service onto sidewalks and parking lots to help customers practice physical distancing. Theme parks and large venues, which may not yet reopen, would have to begin reopening at limited capacity, with available PPE and protective measures like hand sanitizing stations.
The reports presented this week bring us one step closer to developing best practices, revitalizing our economy, reclaiming jobs, and returning to full employment.
ANTI-RACISM RESOURCES
You've protested in solidarity, you've posted on Instagram, and you've voiced your support and love for the black community. Now what? If you are white, how do you move beyond the words “I am an ally,” and affect real change?
Angela Davis answered. “In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist." There is no better time to pour our money, time, and souls into the critical work of eradicating racism and white supremacy. Here are some ways you can help:
Donate to groups advancing racial justice, like
Black Lives Matter LA
The Bail Project
Community Coalition
and more.
Support black-owned businesses, especially those that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Here is a list of more than 200 black-owned food businesses in LA!
Teach your children about racism. The NY Times has a helpful article, complete with reading recommendations, on how to have a productive and age-appropriate conversation about racism.
Speak out against racism in your family, and in your workplace. Changing our society won't happen overnight, it starts by having difficult conversations with those around us.
Listen to people of color, and learn from their experience.
Here is an extensive list of books, articles, podcasts and more you can use to proactively educate yourself.
VOTE. Elect leaders who share your values and will support the necessary changes that will lift up communities of color. Register to vote, or check your status, here!
We simply cannot give in to division at this moment in history. We are at a turning point, and to stand for equality, we have to stand together.

To The Maxx
While the business obituaries continues to grow as a result of COVID-19, there are actually some businesses that are thriving. These companies were doing well enough on their own before all this happened, but because of their agility as well as just a little good luck to be in the right product categories, it’s party time in some sectors of retail these days.
Grocery retailers like Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix, HEB, and other large regionals found themselves the unwitting beneficiary of being “essential,” an obvious moniker if only because we have to eat, and could no longer dine out. But Walmart and Target have the added benefit of being superstores with thousands of non-food products. Amazon has also done exceedingly well, even if they had to put the brakes on distributing non-essential items for the first two months. I have ordered quite a few obscure food products through them during the pandemic, like sport peppers and Chicago relish so I could make authentic Chicago-style hot dogs. Just look at Amazon’s stock price. It has risen nearly 700 points since the market crash in March, to unprecedented levels never before reached.
And then there is the less-expected success of TJ Maxx, which had to shutter all of its stores during the closures, but is now reopening to teeming throngs of crowds eager to pick bargains.
Tumblr media
Built on the idea of a retail Easter egg hunt, shoppers never know what they will find from day to day, much less store to store. It makes their e-commerce model difficult to assemble, if only because they are scooping up their own bargains of otherwise unsold merchandise, and then funneling them through their stores.
In fact, at this moment TJ Maxx has suspended online sales. Furthermore, the company has had to stop its Saturday reopenings because the crowds were too large, making social distancing impossible. Of course, that just means those same people will show up on any of the other six remaining days of the week.
It is the unpredictability of the merchandise that is the appeal. Sizes, colors, and styles will vary, and are very inconsistent in number. Since TJ Maxx deals in manufacturer over-runs and surplus inventory of other retailers, there is no rhyme or reason.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway, though, is that off-price retailing does best when economic conditions are at their worst. Sure, TJ Maxx was already doing well, but with 40 million people unemployed and everyone else walking on egg shells, it makes sense to shop here for your needs. And prior to COVID-19, shoppers simply loved getting bargains that were the result of an economy that is over-stored and over-inventoried and sending many retail chains to extinction.
TJ Maxx posted a loss of $900 million last quarter, so they are not exactly out of the woods yet, but in recent days, they are surging ahead of same-month sales a year ago. While they attribute it to pent-up demand for their wares, I wouldn’t be quite so quick. I’d say it is new demand, not old demand that had been sitting home bored to tears. But no matter how you count the dollars, things are so good for TJ Maxx that it is appropriate to call them not just a survivor, but a thriver.
And their ability to maintain this status depends on their agility to find ever more of what people need as we try to crawl out of this wreckage. We don’t need another name in the obituaries.

UPDATE FROM THE PUBLISHER
Tumblr media
By Rafa Carvajal
I want to wish you the best during these very difficult and uncertain times. The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives in ways that were simply unimaginable a couple of weeks ago. I feel like I am living in a movie sometimes, and my biggest worry is the safety and health of my mom, stepdad, brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, family members, and all my friends. If I was watching our current daily lives and news from around the world in a film, I would find it farfetched and hard to believe. I would probably think that someone had to be really creative to think up such a movie plot. Unfortunately, this is neither a movie nor a dream we can wake up from.
I implore you to stay safe, and stay at home to protect the lives of everyone you love, and of our fellow citizens. I also want to extend my most sincere thanks to all the heroes fighting the battle against the COVID-19 virus on the front lines. We owe an immense debt of gratitude to the doctors, nurses, hospital staff, cleaning people, first responders and members of our national guard and military who are out there every day fighting the spread of the virus and saving lives. You are our true heroes. Thank you very much for your service and sacrifice!
This week, we bring you our first digital only issue of the year. We did our best to print and distribute Wire Magazine, but the mandatory stay at home orders and closures of non-essential businesses mandated by our governor and local mayors made it impossible to print and distribute our magazine. I also needed to prioritize the safety and health of our staff, so everyone could stay safe at home. For now, we have suspended the printing and distribution of Wire Magazine during the unprecedented COVID-19 national and international emergency. We will print and distribute Wire Magazine in all our distribution points once they reopen and it is safe to do so.

COVID-19 LIFE
18 May 2020
How can it be 12 days since I last posted?  It must be the distraction of improving weather, the amount of time I am spending on the garden, and getting ready to enjoy the outdoor season: bringing all the outdoor furniture up from the basement, cleaning the porch, patio and deck, putting covers back on all the cushions, moving all the plants that have been hibernating in the sun room out of doors; ferns for the urns on the front steps, and hanging from hooks above the balustrades on the porch, potted palms next to the wooden furniture facing Pearl street.  There are the big self-watering planters filled with semi-tropicals on the deck off the sun room and the giant urns on the blue-stone patio.  New plantings in the bare spots in the flowers beds, potting a new lime tree, an on-going losing battle with crabgrass and other unworthy competitors to my lawn.  I could have a booth selling dandelion leaves for salad at the Wall Street farmer’s market on Saturday morning if I had the time.  Re-seeding bare patches under the copper beech tree and the corner near the vegetable patch, seeding herbs and greens in tiny compostable pots that have to be misted twice a day.  Cutting away dead leaves and growth from everything and moving the potted plants from beneath the living room windows to their appointed positions out of doors.  Ahh....

The weather had been so cool, damp and dreary, that I had to take matters into my own hands and say enough is enough, that it was about time we moved from bare hints of spring to full on spring mode on May 14th, mainly to keep Marco from packing his bags and moving back to Tuscany, where temperatures are already well into the high seventies and eighties.  Temperatures here rose as ordered.  We hit 80 a couple of days ago which has delayed Marco’s imminent migration.  I even enjoyed a pitcher of iced tea!

Meanwhile, in the wider world, 90,000 Americans are dead, and there have been 1,400,000 confirmed cases of the virus. 36,000,000 Americans have filed unemployment claims (Marco and I are not eligible) and armed civilian militia have overrun the Michigan state  legislature and shut down Oregon’s demanding that the governments re-open the economies. Who are these people?  They are clearly a small but vocal minority of the disparate groups of supremacists, right wing Christians, and hard line second amendment defenders who are being encouraged by the man in the white house (note to my great-grandchildren: many people in these times refuse to even speak the name of the current resident of the White House.  Something we borrowed as a form of protest from the Harry Potter novel series where people were afraid to even mention the name of the antagonist -- Voldemort.)  We’re not ‘afraid’ to mention his name, we just feel that he shouldn’t be given any form of legitimacy, not as a man, and certainly not at as a president.

Closer to home, here in Kingston, NY, a barber in a hipster-retro shop on John Street, has been cutting hair on the sly, in defiance of the shutdown, and has been diagnosed with the virus.  Officials are searching for anyone who might have had their haircut by him (eye roll). On the brighter side, Liberato (Marco’s niece's fiance was finally able to legally open his brand spanking new barber shop in San Querico (Tuscany) this week and is booked solid for two weeks -- 97 appointments.  It’s curious that the Kingston barber made international headlines.  We heard about it from as far afield as Siena (IT) and Geneva (CH, not NY!)  Most people are taking the shutdown seriously, but many are not, and it’s a very divisive topic.  One security guard was shot, in Michigan, for telling a customer to put on a mask or leave the store.  Another liquor store owner in Flint (Michigan clearly has anger management issues) was shot in the ankle for the same reason.  Many people feel that the lock down is a useless exercise, that we should just open up and get it over with.  It’s not killing as many as we thought it might, and cases have started to fall off in the worst hit places.  But the whole point was to ‘flatten the curve’ to prevent the health care system from getting overwhelmed and to protect the vulnerable.  That part has worked.  So where do you begin, and how much is enough, to get the economy started again without creating new spikes and hot-spots of the disease and risk overwhelming the hospitals?  The scientists argue that it can’t be done safely until we have tested most of the population to get a handle on how many people have already had it.  Supposedly, 60% is a magic number for ‘herd immunity,’ above which the virus will slowly die out because it can’t sustain itself in a smaller pool, but that assumes that once you’ve had it, you are immune.  The jury is still out on that.  So much information, so little reliability.  Example: Marco read in the Italian press today that the US had come up with a vaccine and was testing it.  Here, however, the medical professionals are saying we are at least a year, maybe two, away from a vaccine.  It’s no wonder people are acting crazy.  Anyone can  pretty much find someone out there who is saying exactly the thing that appeals to their fears and some of us act on those fears, with the encouragement of the 12-year old in chief, who says he is now taking hydroychloroquine, the efficacy of which is questionable and is said to have potentially harmful side effects.  A couple of months ago, a couple in Arizona took it after he touted it.  The husband died and the wife was hospitalized in serious condition.  Well, let’s hope he manages to kill or incapacitate himself soon.
That’s plenty on that topic.  I don’t know if it is because we are safely ensconced in Kingston in a big house surrounded by lawns and stone walls and flowers that I don’t feel particularly under threat by the virus.  But at the same time, I don’t feel the loss of human contact (other than with Cole, Ashe and Carter and the hugs). My time is my own, and I’m enjoying finding ways to fill it -- cooking, reading, planning for reopening my hospitality locations, gardening, studying, watching movies....  My biggest fears, really, are economic.  When this is over, what will my investments be worth, what will the townhouse in Brooklyn be worth, how will I support myself, help Marco, and leave something to my son and grand kids when I go?  Up until now those were not serious issues for me.

I do miss eating out in places where I know people or places where the food is particularly transcendent, but cooking at home and really investing in keeping food interesting, has been a pleasant challenge.  And as I settle in to lock down -- it’s been two months now -- I find I am seeking less amusement in martinis, mushrooms, and space cookies, and more in reading, writing, studying and cooking and actually having a schedule for those activities.  I also love the efficiency of online visual visits, both personal and for study and business.  I’m staying in closer contact with so many of my friends than I did before lockdown.  We have a call tonight at 7 p.m. with Joe and Vicki in LA which I am looking forward to, and we are doing a weekly family call on Sundays with the kids, Roy and CT in Hawaii, Maud in Brooklyn, Hedy and Firth and M and me here in Kingston.

Hawaii, by the way, is pretty safe.  And here, in Ulster County, we’ve had fewer than 40 deaths and 1500 cases.  And considering how many people like me have fled from the city to Kingston, I’m surprised it’s not higher.  East Hampton, for example, was a hot spot because of all the rich NYC types that have homes there and left the city.  Sorry, sorry.  I promised to stop.  Times article says that wealthier neighborhoods in NYC have lost 40% of their population!  I’m so glad the kids are at our place to keep an eye on things.  And Marco’s finding a rhythm, too.  Check it out.

I finally plodded though to the end of Thomas Campanella’s book, “Brooklyn: The Once and Future City”.  It was very, very informative, even if many parts of it would be far more interesting to civic planners and architects than to casual readers, but it really did put a lot in perspective on Brooklyn’s economic and social trajectory through nearly 300 years with some interesting segues into geological formations that impact the place still today.  Sadly, as interesting and appealing a place as Brooklyn is, very little scholarly work has been done on it’s history.  Until very recently, the focus has always been on Manhattan.  It did correct a number of my own misconceptions.  Importantly, despite the fact that Robert Moses was not thrilled at the design for the proposed Dodger Stadium at the intersection of Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues, it doesn’t appear that he, on his own, could have stopped it.  Research suggests that it was the disappearing fan base (fleeing the crime-ridden city in the 50s and 60s) that made the move to LA more an economic decision than has otherwise been speculated.  And I’m no fan of Robert Moses. The study group, in the end, actually wanted to put the stadium complex in Park Slope, bordered by Sterling, Bergen, Vanderbilt and Boerum Place.  What a disaster that would have been on so many levels!!  Not the least of which would have been the United Jet that crashed in that spot in 1960. And the Weisberg’s wouldn’t have been my neighbors for 34 years because their house would have been razed.
Other non-essential slightly amusing details. Deer ‘resistant’ plants are not deer ‘proof’.  And our herd doesn’t seem to be made up of fussy eaters. So, we are frustrated by the number of our plants that are being ravaged.  Apparently, based on an internet search, Marco has discovered that piss and cayenne pepper are good home garden deer deterrents!  Well...  I am putting it to the test with a mixture of BOTH.  I’ll keep you posted on results.  (I won’t go into detail on how the mixture is obtained/prepared, interesting as it may be.)  Hungry?  Peanut butter, honey and banana -- not since I was 10 years old.  Think I’ll write a kids’ Covid cookbook!
