[2 weeks ago in Sangonomiya Shrine]
“Secret Santa? What’s that?”
You look to Kokomi the same time Gorou does, the same question spilling from both your lips. Sharing a knowing look with the boy next to you, the both of you laugh in unison. Gorou’s sharp canines catch your attention as they glint under the soft lights of the Sangonomiya Shrine.
Kokomi smiles secretively as she flicks her gaze between you and Gorou, her pale indigo eyes reflecting amusement as she giggles to herself.
“It’s a year-end tradition that another region practices, I was hoping to do the same for the Resistance to lift morale,” Kokomi explains. With a wave of her hand, two shrine maidens appear with stacks of letters in their hands.
“To participate in Secret Santa, one takes on the role of ‘Santa’ and is assigned a giftee that must not be exposed to others, especially the giftee themselves.”
The stacks of letters are placed before you and Gorou as Kokomi continues with her explanation.
“General Y/N and General Gorou, I am entrusting the both of you with the task of delivering these letters to the members of our resistance. Inside each letter holds the instructions of the tradition as well as each person’s giftee.” Kokomi instructs with a smile as if she hadn’t just given out extra work.
“I’ll see to it immediately, Your Excellency!” Gorou responds immediately. His brown ears twitch cutely as he starts sorting out the letters by area.
It’s during times like this that you envy the overflowing enthusiasm Gorou has.
You smile sheepishly as you meet Kokomi’s gaze, “Of course, Your Excellency,” You say, putting on your best expression of loyalty.
You’re taken aback by the chuckles that escape from Kokomi’s mouth as you begin sweeping the letters into your rucksack.
“Here, the two of you have giftees as well,” Kokomi says as she hands a letter to the both of you. “I wish you both the best of luck, generals.”
You and Gorou nod in response, accepting your letters.
[A day before Christmas Eve, in Ritou]
You’re screwed.
You had been too busy delivering the letters to the members of the resistance and your work as General that you forgot about your own giftee.
Of all people, your giftee had to be the only person you knew like the back of your hand, meaning that it’d be terribly difficult to find the perfect gift for him who you’ve gifted so many gifts through the years you’ve known each other.
Yes, your giftee was none other than the pointy-eared Gorou.
That was why you had invited him out under the guise of spending your day-offs together in Ritou when in fact, you were hoping to find a gift that he’d like.
To no surprise, Gorou shows up wearing the same lightweight militia gear.
“I thought I told you to dress casually,” You remark with your arms crossed as you stand under the shade of a maple tree.
“We’re generals we need to be on alert at all times,” Gorou replies instantly as he comes to a stop before you, a wry smirk on his lips.
You shake your head as you let out a defeated sigh, maybe you should get him some clothes for the new year.
“Are you looking for a gift for your giftee?” Gorou asks pointedly as soon as you join him by his side.
His straightforward question throws you off-guard but you manage to stutter out an excuse.
“Of course not! I-I already got one at home!” You feel your cheeks heat up as Gorou laughs, eyes disappearing into crescents.
“Maybe try not to blink so much the next time you lie,” He comments, poking your cheek with his finger.
You pull a face as you begin to take larger strides, leaving Gorou behind as he’s forced to break out into a jog to catch up to you.
“Don’t be upset, sunshine,” Gorou says as he catches your wrist, “I haven’t gotten a gift for my giftee yet either,” He admits.
“Sunshine?” You question. “I thought you didn’t like us using our nicknames for each other.”
At your words, Gorou flushes bright red and looks away. His ears twitch nervously as you continue to pin him under your gaze.
“We rarely get to spend time alone like this so I thought it’d be fine…” He tells you hesitantly.
You feel your heart squeeze in your chest as Gorou looks at you with puppy eyes, the kind you’ve never been able to resist.
“Are you sure about this… honey?” You ask, still not quite believing what was happening. After all, the nicknames the both of you had for each other were made up on a whim when the both of you were children and pretending to be a couple while playing house. Neither of you used it until Gorou brought up the memory one day after a particularly difficult mission during your time together as soldiers.
“Yes,” Gorou answers you, much more confidently than you’d expected. “I think,” He adds on.
“You think?”
“Argh… If you want to call me honey you can, if you don’t want to then don’t!” Gorou tells you. His voice travels far and wide as he raises his voice out of embarrassment.
You hold back your laughter as you watch his fluffy tail swish back and forth anxiously. And despite the slight awkwardness of it all, Gorou doesn’t let go of your hand that he had sneakily slipped together with his as he leads you towards the market.
*
“Hey, do you think a snow globe would make a good present?” Gorou asks you as he holds one up to your face.
You stare entranced at the figurine of a Ruin Guard in a pink skirt, standing off-center inside the globe as silver and white bits floated around it, mimicking the winter snow.
“I think it would make a very good present for someone with a sense of humor,” You answer, giggling as Gorou shakes the snow globe to kick up the fallen pieces.
“Hm, interesting,” Gorou comments as he places the snow globe back on the shelf.
As you continue to peruse the shelves, you’re hit with the undeniable reality that there really was nothing that would be the perfect gift for Gorou.
You had thought that Ritou would be chock-full of pretty trinkets from overseas but all you’ve found so far were worthless junk that one would call pretty as a joke. It didn’t help that most of the products you had come across were exceptionally well-made and it made you question if it was you who didn’t understand the value of these possibly higher art forms.
“Hey honey, look what I found.” You hold up a mini figurine of Ms. Hina, a popular columnist at the Yae Publishing House.
Though exceptionally well-made like every item in the store, you couldn’t help but be drawn to the humongous assets the figurine boasted.
“Ms. Hina really does look like you doesn’t she?” You ask in a teasing manner. Of course, you had long found out the real identity of the columnist but it was entertaining to watch Gorou try to dispel the rumors.
“I don’t think we look that much alike,” Gorou answers you simply, keeping his gaze averted as he picks up a random object. “Also, you should put that down before you drop it, that thing costs more than both our salaries combined.”
“Wait- really?” You immediately put down the figurine once you caught sight of the price tag attached.
The Ms. Hina Fanclub was definitely not be trifled with now that you’ve seen for yourself the valuation of a single figurine.
Heaving a sigh, you’re glad Gorou noticed the price tag as soon as he did. If he hadn’t you probably would’ve swung it around to tease him.
You’re about to suggest leaving the store to Gorou when you notice something dangling above your heads.
“Congratulations! You’re both the winners of our Couple Event!” You hear the store owner shout as he pops up from behind the shelves. In his hands was a remodeled fishing rod and at the end of it, a strange plant was tied onto the string.
“We’re not interested,” You start to say the same time Gorou does.
“We’re not a couple!” He shouts, nearly startling the store owner off the stepping stool he was standing on.
“Don’t lie! I heard the both of you call each other honey and sunshine!” The store owner shouts back with equal fervor.
Your palm meets your forehead in a loud smack as you heave a heavy sigh. This was embarrassing, but at least you got to see the flustered expression on Gorou you’ve been wanting to see since the start of the day.
“W-we’re just friends!” Gorou says adamantly. His eyebrows are pinched together as he speaks, ears twitching as he continues to argue back and forth with the storeowner.
“Bah! Forget it if you don’t want the 50% discount!”
50% discount? That means you can afford the Ms. Hina figurine!
“I’m terribly sorry for what my lover has said,” You interrupt, pushing Gorou aside as you take his place, facing the store owner.
“We’d love to participate in your event as the winners of your Couple Event.” You ignore Gorou as he protests from the side, his face reddening by the second. Whether from frustration or embarrassment, you’d ask him later after you’ve got your discount.
“That’s the spirit! All you have to do is kiss your lover under the mistletoe!”
The storeowner’s words spark another outrage from Gorou as he tries to argue that the both of you weren’t a couple. But the only thing that stands out in his argument is his usage of the word, ‘yet’.
“We’re not a couple yet!” You hear Gorou yell. Despite the frustration in his voice, you don’t fail to notice the swish of his tail as it wags from side to side.
“You should dump him,” The store owner says to you straightforwardly.
“Haha… Maybe so,” You answer sheepishly as you clamp a hand over Gorou’s mouth, silencing him. His skin feels hot underneath your palm and you’re beginning to wonder if maybe the feeling was mutual all this time.
“Come on, honey, you don’t want to keep the storeowner waiting, don’t you?” You ask sweetly as you turn to face Gorou. His ears which were usually pointed and alert were flat against his head as he pouted, eyes sparkling as he gave you his best puppy eyes.
Perhaps you’ve finally found a power able to triumph Gorou’s puppy eyes.
“I just want the discount,” You murmur as quietly as possible as you lean towards his ear.
You watch as Gorou visibly relaxes, releasing the tension in his shoulders as he faces you with a new expression you’ve never seen before.
“Rather than the discount, I want you.”
Your questions are answered as Gorou confesses. You were never really able to confirm it before but now that it has happened, you’re regretting the fact that it was happening in a strange store in Ritou, with the store owner having a VIP view of the scene unraveling.
“The feeling is mutual,” You tell Gorou. Your heart beats faster in your chest as you watch his face light up, his tail resuming its wagging as you meet his teal blue eyes.
“Just kiss already!” The storeowner whisper-yells, excitement shining clearly in his eyes as he lowers the mistletoe till the end of the leaves are brushing against the tips of Gorou’s ears, making them twitch.
The air in your lungs is knocked out of you as you feel Gorou pull you in by the waist, his lips meeting yours in a searing kiss.
The lips are soft and sweet, and much warmer than you’ve imagined. Your skin feels like it’s been lit afire as Gorou dips you slightly, smiling into the kiss when you gasp in surprise.
“Hey store owner, I’ll get that Ms. Hina figurine,” You tell the store owner before grabbing Gorou by the neck to pull him in for another kiss.
[Christmas Day, somewhere on Watatsumi Island]
“Hey, honey.”
“Hi, sunshine.”
You greet Gorou with a peck on his cheek, grinning when you see him scrunch his face.
“I have something to tell you,” You say to him, faking a serious tone. You almost convince Gorou that there’s something wrong that is until you spot what he has in his hand.
“Am I your giftee?” You ask, pointing at the gift box.
When Gorou averts his eyes, you know you’ve hit the mark.
A laugh escapes from your lips as you show him what you have in your hand. A gift box, just smaller.
“You’re my giftee,” You tell him.
“I know, Her Excellency may have dropped a few hints,” Gorou explains with a sheepish smile.
“Then I guess we have her to thank for this,” You say wryly, gesturing between yourself and Gorou.
“For that, we do,” Gorou confirms as he nods along. “So what did you get for me?” He asks as he maneuvers around you, plucking the box out of your hands.
Your heart rate picks up as you watch Gorou’s expression carefully. It took you longer than expected but you finally decided on a last-minute gift for him.
“A hairclip?” Gorou questions as he takes his present out of the box, he raises the clip, letting the sunlight bounce off of it.
“It’s handmade,” You inform him, “That’s why the mistletoe is a little crooked.”
Gorou grins brightly as he hands the hairclip to you. “Will you put it on for me?”
You oblige immediately, carefully sectioning his hair as you pin the hairclip over the white tufts. You huff a soft laugh as you adjust the clip. After all, you had gone through multiple rounds of haggling with the very same store owner so that you could break off the mistletoe from one of his ‘Christmas’ decorations.
“Thank you,” Gorou says as he strokes your cheek with his thumb.
“Oh yeah, here’s your gift.” Your present is placed onto your waiting hands and you make quick work of the wrapping, tearing it off as you dive into the heart of it.
“A necklace? It’s so pretty!” You gush as you take it out of the box.
“It’s a mistletoe necklace,” Gorou says quietly. “I guess we had the same idea,” He states shyly.
“I think we should celebrate Christmas every year,” You tell Gorou.
“After all, it’s what brought us together.”
