Travel Tales.... Bavaro, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

You know that feeling when you wake up the first day after you arrive on holiday and forget for the first few seconds where you are then you remember... Yeah, we are on holiday!!! First stop breakfast. We had not been all-inclusive before so we were pleasantly surprised by the variety of food and drink there was on offer. Pancakes, omelettes, cereal, toast to name a few. After a few different courses and a lot of coffee and juice, we went down to the beach to explore. We walked all along the beach as far as your eyes can see in the photographs, it was so beautiful you could literally walk forever, past all types of hotels lining the coastline. We stayed and sunbathed for a couple of hours then decided to go to book some trips for during the trip, we decided to book on a boat trip to Saona Island and an outback safari to see some of the real Dominican Republic. We booked the trips to split up the holiday, we like lazing around on the beach but you can only lay around so much and read so many books before you start getting bored. The day of the outback trip arrived and we set off in an all-terrain vehicle, we were taken to a few different places around Dominican.

We stopped at a house which made coconut oil it was like a little street with a couple of houses... and a shed full of coconuts, the owners showed us the process for extracting the oil out of the coconuts. I find it fascinating, I did not even know coconuts produced oil! Next stop was a cocoa and mamajuana factory, we made a friend here, a little parrot.

It was so cute just sat in a tree watching everyone walking past. I learned a few things about the fruit that day, I know totally random but.... did you know this is how pineapples grew...

I had no idea but I never really thought much about where or how the fruit was grown, I was totally surprised by this one. I also learned mangoes grow in massive trees at the side of the road.

So that was my 'what I learned today' covered. There was another plant we saw while we were there 'the cocoa plant' i took this picture but did not see the funny side of it at first, until we were looking back at them when we got home. What do you think?

We had a chance to sample the chocolate made from these plants, I say chocolate I mean the drink. Then they let us try the traditional version of the mamajuana, WOW, that was strong. It was not the version back at the hotel, this was much stronger. After a wander around the site we set off for the cigar factory, I keep saying factories, in truth they were like small shops or even stalls by the roadside rather than factories.

It's great how they make them, they make it look so easy but I bet it is not! The final stop on this trip was a secluded beach, from far away it looked beautiful but as we approached it we noticed however beautiful some of the tops of the trees were missing. the guide told us there had been a storm the previous week and it had done quite a lot of damage to the area. We thought it was still a beautiful place even with some of the treetops missing. We had a go at bodyboarding but to be honest, I was not very good at it and I am a little wary of the waves after I got rolled a couple of times and it took my breath. “you and i can be alone together later”

- literally what our 75-year-old tour guide whispered to me on the catamaran for our day trip to Saona Island excursion on day 2. Buckle in, my peeps. It’s about to be one wild ride.

The day began with a lovely alarm jarring us awake at 5:30AM. Luckily we were pretty tired the night before from traveling to Punta so we got a decent amount of sleep, overall. We had to prerequest “Fast breakfast” the night before because we needed to be ready at 6AM for our shuttle to the boat and the breakfast buffet didn’t open until 7AM. We got changed, lathered on sunscreen and wandered to the front desk to pick up our individually wrapped styrofoam takeout boxes that were equipped with 1 banana, 1 yogurt, 1 piece of banana bread, and 1 roll (kind of like the roll you’d get with a chicken dinner), with jelly. It was interesting, but we were starving, so we went in.

We board our bus (fits about 12 people) to begin our way to the boat tour. We knew it was going to be about an hour an a half ride to get there. But, we didn’t even arrive to the boat until 10:30AM. What could we have possibly done for 4 and a half hours you ask? Let. me. tell. you:

We stopped at a gas station, in which some people switched tour busses (still not sure why?), then we stopped at a shady gift store where we got a free shot of “MamaJuana”, which is their national drink or something, and it actually was pretty good. They also had a bathroom #blessed. The one thing I couldn’t figure out was the crap shack had a bathroom attendant?? When I stepped out of the stall to wash my hands she pointed to the soap dispenser (literally the most basic one - like yes, I know what soap is), so I put soap on my hands, and then she gave me a piece of throwaway towel to use from a roll in her hand. It was nice but totally unnecessary? And I kind of felt like I needed to tip her but I didn’t want to? So weird. But anyway, I did end up buying 2 things from the crap shack: a necklace for my grandma and a pair of earrings for myself, in which the dude was trying to sell to me for $60. I said heck naw cuz, and gave him $40 instead. Correy paid $20 for an ankle bracelet that ended up falling off her ankle the day later because of it’s poor quality but we won’t talk about that. Let’s just pray my ears don’t fall off from infection whenever I decide to wear the earrings. MOVING ON.

We get back on the bus and head to the coast where we’d get on our boat. We finally get there and depart the bus, and I’m so jazzed about getting to the boat. I’m thirsty and ready to get my drink on. The tour guide, who had briefly introduced himself as Fransisco (still unsure if that’s even his real name), tells us to follow him. Well we follow him down a dirt trail, past a school (?), to a little boardwalk that overlooks the water, which was cool - but where was our boat? We just spent 15 minutes walking here and there’s nothing here and now I’m mad.

Whatever yo, we take pics and follow Fransisco back down the trail where he FINALLY walks us to the beach to get ready to hop on the catamaran. The tour worked like this: you would ride to the island in either a catamaran (the party boat) or a speedboat, and then when you left the island, you would take whatever boat you didn’t take in the morning to get there. We got to ride the catamaran first #BLESSED. This means BOOZE CRUISE YA’LL.

We piled on to the boat in which the captain introduced himself, his crew, his “dancers” (who were like 13 year old girls which made me sort of uncomfortable and I felt bad for them kind of?), and Fransisco. We layed out in our bathing suits while the “dancers” (I have to keep using quotes because I literally can’t bring myself to call them that), served us up FREE Rum and Cokes. My literal DREAM!! I was so happy, I made friends with one of the “dancers”, Eliza. She was bomb. I kept going to her for more refills MY GIRL. So content with the morning so far. They started blasting music, which was like 90% spanish, 8% bruno mars, and 2% macarena. Liv , Correy and I sat and chatted for a while until Liv and Core had to run to the bathroom in which I opted to stay by our bags. That’s when it happened.

I was sitting there, minding my own business, sipping on my rum and coke and embracing the sun, when Fransisco walks up behind me (like a CREEP) and whispers in my ear, “don’t worry, you and I can get alone together later and talk about everything.” UM EW. WHAT. I gave him the nastiest look of all time and replied, “UM NO.” and he walked away. I was so shook. Also it was unsettling because one of the workers at the crap shack literally just asked if I was over the age of 16 so I was really looking like I was 12 that day. GOODBYE.

Tipsy Hales had already set in but now I was tipsy AND shook, and if you know me, you know I don’t let this kind of stuff fly when I’ve had a few drinks in me. Core and Liv came back so I gave them the story of the old man and we all vowed to keep our eyes out for him (AKA avoid him at all costs). Time passes, and my drink, naturally, gets empty. I turn around to walk over to ma girl Eliza, when old man is standing there with his arm out acting like he’s going to refill my drink for me.

This is NOT my first rodeo, you old, crusty freak.

I’ve seen you fumbling around in your fanny pack all morning for who knows what. and you know I don’t like you already. So no. Leave me alone.

I shook my head and said no again, cause apparently he didn’t get it the first time (per usual).

I took the longest way around the catamaran to get my drink refilled just so I didn’t have to walk by him. When I came back to the girls, we wanted to get a pic taken. We made friends with a couple of girls from Spain, one which spoke fluent English, and asked her to take our pic. She happily agreed and set her drink down to take our photo. Her friend stepped away to go to the bathroom. Then, OLD CRUSTY picks up our friend’s drink from the floor and holds it so she’s forced to talk to him after she’s done taking our pic. I literally cannot stand this dude.

So after she gets our pic I openly walk over to her and tell her to not drink it because he was being super weird earlier and also trying to grab my drink, and he saw me talking trash so he sheepishly handed her the drink and ran away. She freaked out, naturally, and dumped it overboard to get a new one. I was feeling like a #hero. We celebrated by dancing to the macarena and (somewhat) salsa dancing with Eliza and her friends on the front of the catamaran until we got to the island.

The. island. was. AMAZE. Bluest water I have literally ever seen in my entire life. We got lunch and hungout there for an hour and half. And by hangout, I mean walk the beach, take pics and spend a good 80% of our time floating in the ocean water with the sun on our faces. The day ended with a trip on the speedboat to the “natural swimming pool” which was an area near an island with 3 feet water wayyy off the coast of the island that people could swim in if they wish. We decided to stay on the boat because we were #tired from the events happening in the morning.

The boat makes it back to the port and we get off to walk back up to our vans. All is well, but I’m feeling uncomfortable with old crusty being on our bus, so Liv sat next to me to ensure he didn’t try to come creep by me or something. Thank God the bus ride back was shorter than the ride there. But it still took way too long, in my opinion. We didn’t actually get back to the all-inclusive until 7:30PM. But don’t worry you guys, an hour out from our home destination old crusty had to go out with a bang.

First of all, he literally caressed liv’s calf without saying a single. word. and then just walked away??? We literally just stared at each other in disbelief because of how gd weird he was. Then, we have to switch busses for some reason, so I sit next to correy toward the front. This bus gets so crowded with peeps that old crusty has to sit in the back area with us so a tourist could sit in the passenger seat, and this, unfortunately, put him directly next to me.

He puts his hand on my arm and holds it there. I’m cringing so hard on the inside you guys I kind of wanted to throw up. He’s all, “so what hotel are you staying at?” and I said “Vista Sol”, and he’s alike “ahhhhhh, Vista Sol”, STILL holding my arm, ALTHOUGH I literally had to tell him we were staying at Vista Sol .5 seconds earlier because THAT WAS THE WHOLE REASON WE GOT ON A NEW BUS!!! GOODBYE!!

A wave of relief hits me when he takes his hand off my arm, but then about 15 minutes later he starts getting the shakes of some sort. I don’t know how to explain it you guys. He was literally twitching. We stop at a hotel to drop off a family who promptly exit the vehicle, then homeboy disappears and we are like dude can we go now? He literally disappears for like 15 minutes. We made friends with 4 ladies from Vermont on our bus and the one was like “he’s having withdrawals from something” and I’m like jesus H christ this is actually my worst fear. What a TIME to be ALIVE.

He returns, much more chipper, and sits behind Liv in the spot that the famliy was sitting before they left. He then picks up a leftover bag of trail mix that the mom who left the bag was eating and starts eating it?? Liv is looking at him like omg. She asks him where he lives, to which he replies “next to your hotel”, so for reals I was like we are DYING. TODAY. my friends.

By the grace of the good lord above, he finally leaves the van in which I almost kicked him out and for sure did NOT give him a tip. I felt 100% more safe in the van without him there, and we were quickly dropped off at our resort so we could get ready for dinner at the italian restaurant and chill until we had 2 full days of FREEDOM!! It was a long first full day in Punta, but TOTALLY worth the boat ride and island views. Downfall = Old Crusty. I would recommend you do NOT book the Saona Island Day Trip from Punta Cana off of TripAdvisor because you might get stuck with him and it might just put a whole damper on your day. Also watch yo drinks my friends.

But for sure try to go to Saona Island - just not through TripAdvisor’s tour. :)

I have already guided a Blue Lagoon excursion in Crete, saw the Blue Lagoon in Malta and there must be a lot of places called Blue Lagoon, but the real one from the movie is here in the Dominican Republic. Saona is an island South of Hispaniola, it is a popular excursion spot from Punta Cana/Bavaro and Bayahibe. From Punta Cana /Bavaro we went first by bus to Bayahibe which is about 50 kilometers far. From Bayahibe you can go by speedboat, by catamaran, by fishing boats, there are different companies with different possibilities. Már vezettem egy Kék lagúna kirándulást Krétán, megnéztem a Kék lagúnát Máltán, és még biztos, hogy sok hely van, amit Kék Lagúnának hívnak, de az eredeti a filmből itt van Dominikán. Saona szigete Hispaniola szigetétől délre található, egy népszerű kirándulóhely Punta Cana / Bavaro és Bayahibe-ből. Mi Punta Cana / Bavaro-ból mentünk először busszal Bayahibe-be, amely kb. 50 kilométerre van. Bayahibe-ból motorcsónakkal, katamaránnal, halászhajóval lehet tovább menni, különböző cégek vannak különböző lehetőségekkel.

During our excursion we went first by Catamaran to Playa Palmilla. We saw this during the journey: A mi kirándulásunk során először katamaránnal mentünk a Playa Palmilla-hoz (Palmilla tengerpart). A hajóút alatt ezt láttuk:

There is an amazing beach here with turquoise water, white sandy beach, no waves, coconut palm trees and designed sunbeds. It is a real paradise. Not accidently was chosen the area for the ’Blue Lagoon’ movie with Brooke Shields… Itt egy csodálatos strand található türkizkék tengerrel, fehér homokkal, kis hullámokkal, kókuszpálmákkal és különlegesen dizájnolt napozóágyakkal. Ez egy igazi paradicsom. Nem véletlenül választották a “Blue Lagoon” című film Brooke Shields helyszínéül …

Not far from Playa Palmilla is a Natura Pool named the Blue Lagoon, where you can see seastars. Thanks to the tourists in the past, who took out of the water the seastars for a photo, there are less and less. It is called natural pool because the water is about 1 meter deep and crystal clear. Nem messze Playa Palmillától van egy természetes úszómedence, amit Kék-lagúnának neveznek, ahol tengeri csillagokat is lehet látni. Sajnos, köszönhetően annak, hogy a múltban a turisták kivették a vízből egy fotó kedvéért a csillagokat, számuk igen lecsökkent. Természetes úszómedencének nevezik, mivel a víz körülbelül 1 méter mély és kristálytiszta.

Our last stop was at the Isla Saona itself on the Playa Tao. The beach here is also fantastic: you can swim in the sea, take a walk in the sand, relax under the palm trees or drink a Pina Colada from a real ananas… At the end of the day we went back to Bayahibe by speadboat, which is better than by a catamaran because everyone is tired of the sun and wants to go home as fast as possible… Utolsó állomásunk a Playa Tao-nál volt, ami Saona szigetén van. A strand itt is fantasztikus: lehet úszni a tengerben, sétálni a homokban, pihenni a pálmafák alatt, vagy inni egy Pina Coladát valódi ananászban szervírozva … A nap végén visszamentünk Bayahibe-be motorcsónakkal, ami jobb, mintha katamaránnal tettük volna meg az utat, mivel a nap végére már mindenki fáradt a naptól és olyan gyorsan akar haza menni ahogy csak lehet.

For those who are interested in this island here are some pieces of information: Cristopher Colon (Columbus) named this lsla Savona, which is a small town in North Italy. Columbus was born in Genova but worked in Savona for a time. Saona is the biggest island of the country (130 km2) and is in the National Park of the East (Parque Nacional del Este). The National Park is much bigger with Catalina island, with Palmilla and its natural pool and with more than 400 caves and the ocean (430 km2). It is a protected area, there are more than 500 species of plants and there can be found many endangered animals (birds, bats, dolphins) and it is a nestling site for turtles. It was a movie scene (partly) for the Blue Lagoon, Pirates of the Carribbean and a Bounty chocolate commercial. Do you want to see one of he most beautiful island of the Carribean? Then go to Isla Saona 😊 Azoknak, akik érdeklődnek a sziget iránt itt van néhány információ, amit összegyűjtöttem: Kolumbusz nevezte ezt Isla Savona-nak, egy észak-olaszországi kisváros után. Kolumbusz Genovában született, de egy ideig Savona-ban dolgozott. Saona az ország legnagyobb szigete (130 km2), és a Keleti Nemzeti Parkban (Parque Nacional del Este) található. A Nemzeti Parkhoz sokkal nagyobb terület tartozik Catalina szigetével, Palmillával és természetes medencéjével, több mint 400 barlanggal és az óceánnal (430 km2). Ez egy védett terület, több mint 500 növényfaj van itt és számos veszélyeztetett állat (madarak, denevérek, delfinek) található, és fontos teknősfészkelő hely. Family Cruisers: the best multihulls for space and comfort at sea 2018

While many prefer the looks and potential speed of some of the faster cats, in reality the majority of sailors do not actually want to cruise particularly fast. This is the wind-down time they’ve looked forward to – why rush it? Space is king. These production cats rely on a formula of maximum deck and accommodation space for the length and money, and, in terms of a holiday platform or for all-round family cruising contentment, are seriously hard to beat.

The market is dominated by Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot and Leopard, who have order books that read like cricket scores. But companies like Bali and Bavaria/Nautitech are also becoming increasingly popular as they bring a more open and exterior focused layout. If you are still on the fence.

Just launched: Leopard 50

In its guise as the ‘own brand’ catamaran of Sunsail and the Moorings, Leopard has been extraordinarily successful. The Cape Town yard of Robertson and Caine has turned out over 1,500 catamarans  and almost all of them have been sailed to their new homes around the globe – a phenomenal calling card, when you think about all those South Atlantic miles. The new 50 replaces the popular 48, updating it with a host of features that have proved popular in the smaller models. From the outside, the boat has been restyled rather than redesigned. The topsides have been jazzed up with a stripe of smoked glass that conceals bigger portlights. The coachroof  is more angular and square. This has the advantage of increasing the window area in the saloon, including  a full-length skylight. Leopard makes a point of putting the table and seating at the back of the saloon and the galley at the front. The logic is to connect indoor and outdoor social spaces – something that is enhanced by the sliding door and windows at the aft end. This leaves enough space for another unique feature among its series catamarans: a weathertight door out of the front of the saloon into the forward cockpit.

But the real ace in the Leopard 50’s feature list is the option of having a true flybridge on the hardtop over the cockpit. This comes complete with a lounge area, table and sunbed plus further choices for speakers and a shade awning. This adds weight high up and raises the boom, so for those in search of better sailing performance, there is also a classic hardtop version, the 50P. The ‘lounge’ version can still manage 40° off the true wind, and the polars predict a top speed of just over 12 knots. The key difference for the market over the 48 is its ability to offer five cabins with crew quarters, allowing four cabins to be sold. The other key changes have taken place “under the bonnet”, as naval architect Alexander Simonis of Simonis Voogd puts it. Carbon-infused ring frames have been used to make the boat stiffer in key areas, making the more open-plan layout possible without adding too much weight. It is a technique that was successfully pioneered on larger racing cats.

First impressions

The European press launch for the Leopard 50 hinted at the phenomenal space this new model offers. At one time I counted 31 people on the aft deck, most sitting comfortably! And it was the space that continued to amaze me as I walked through the boat. Not so much the colossal volume in the hulls – that’s almost expected in today’s family/charter cats – but more the amount of social space there is on deck and the separation between these areas. There is room enough for one family to chill in the forward cockpit, for example, another on the flybridge, one in the saloon and a fourth in the aft cockpit! At the same time, I appreciate how Simonis Voogd has retained the stepped hulls to keep a narrow entry but beam above the waterline. Launched into the unforgiving waters off Cape Town, these cats are still expected to sail to weather. Visibility from the single helm station will be an issue – indeed forward-and aft-facing cameras are fitted to aid berthing manoeuvres. The standard level of fit-out and finish also looked good. Some 17 boats were sold in first three days of the Miami Boat Show, half of which are destined for The Moorings charter fleets.

Just launched: Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42

Born of racing stock in 1975, Fountaine Pajot has since evolved into building seaworthy cruising catamarans. It has just launched the Astréa 42, a replacement for the Lipari 41 and one that completes its line-up from 40ft to 67ft. She shares the design DNA of her sisters, namely a trademark positive sheer, slightly inverted bow, bulkhead helm station and ease of handling. The Astréa is all about comfort. She features a good-sized cockpit, with armchair-style seating along the aft crossbeam. Between the skirts at deck level, there’s an optional ‘beach club’ – a teak slatted platform, to you and me. This can be lowered 25cm below the water or raised with the dinghy on it. There’s another social area in front of the coachroof by the trampoline. Although she measures just 42ft overall, FP and designer Berret Racoupeau have put much thought into the area around the helm. To keep the boom lower, they’ve stuck with their favoured bulkhead helming position, with all control lines running back to a double seat there. On the hard-top to port there is a sunpad and aft of the mainsheet track, optional solar panels. The interior has also been designed for optimum communication: sliding doors connect the saloon and the cockpit into one big space. Configuration is highly modular, but there are plenty of options, including 12 shower/heads layouts and either three or four cabins. The show boat had a clever central shower area that is accessible from either forward or aft.

First impressions

This is the little sister to the Saona 47 that launched last year, and shares much of the styling. FP sold 120 Saonas in a year. Now consider that it had already sold 130 of this new 42 before the first boat was launched. Such sales figures are driven by a market demanding as much space and comfort as possible  in a smartly designed and  easy-to-manage package. The volume of the cabins is almost on a par with the Helia 44. It even boasts an island berth in the owner’s cabin. My chief concern is how such volume in the hulls and the low bridgedeck might affect her performance, particularly in waves. If you do opt for one, be wise that the 40- 50ft family cruiser cat market is truly booming, so you’d better be patient if you want a new boat.

Coming up: Neel 47

One of the few cruising trimaran builders out there, Neel is really making its mark at the moment. The company is doubling in size this year, thanks to the success of the 51 last year. It has just re-skinned its popular 45 into the faster 45 Evolution and the La Rochelle-based yard has now announced a new 47, fitting snugly between the 45 and 51. Unlike its sisters, this is designed by French veteran Marc Lombard, best known  for his Figaro II designs and work  with Jeanneau.

The 47 borrows from the larger 51 with the strangely copyrighted ‘Cockloon’ concept, marrying cockpit and saloon living spaces through fully opening rear doors. The master cabin is carved out of the starboard corner  of the saloon, to offer the benefit of views from the main deck. Up to four further doubles are available in the outrigger hulls. Where the three-hull design really comes into its own is in performance terms. You get more righting moment from the broader beam, a much stiffer rig because the mast and stays are all fixed to the same monolithic centre hull, and consequently sharper performance to windward. Comfortable, fast and with styling that is guaranteed to turn heads when she hits the water in early 2019.

Privilege Serie 5

Craftsmanship and semi-custom build are the calling cards of French brand Privilege Marine. The yard may have increased its efficiency under the ownership of the Hanse Group, but don’t expect anonymous production line boats. The team will incorporate whatever finish and features you desire. First out of the shed under Hanse’s watch is the Serie 5 – the brand’s entry-level cat. She offers a big hull with plenty of volume, but with lines by racing veteran Marc Lombard she won’t be slow. The accent is on stability for a rounded bluewater performance. The bulkhead helm station helps keep the weight lower and is well-connected to the social space of the cockpit. The distinguishing feature is the ‘nacelle’ structure between the bows, which creates a huge volume entirely devoted to the master cabin.

Bali 4.1

The latest in Bali’s range picks up on many of the attributes that made a success of the smaller Bali 4.0. Cruising comfort remains the key characteristic of this catamaran, with lots of social space and comfortable cabins. Bali, owned by the Catana Group, is unique in the cat market for connecting its two hulls fore and aft with a rigid deck, rather than dropping a deck on top of deck beams. The skirts of the two transoms are bridged by a solid piece of GRP, and the area where the trampoline would usually be is half turned over to a foredeck lounging and eating area. There are no centreboards to worry about – the boat relies on stub keels to keep her sliding forwards rather than sideways. This means less performance to windward, but easier handling. A forgiving package, offered with either three or four en-suite cabins.

Lagoon 50

Unveiled in 2017, the Lagoon 50 plugs the gap between the 52 and the 450. It has been given a new look on deck, with a slight bevel to the top of each hull, huge portlights and even more glass around the saloon. There’s an easier-to-handle rig with shorter boom, high-aspect main, self-tacking jib, and all lines lead back to the flybridge helm station. Designer VPLP has also moved the mast a little aft to reduce pitching. As with all Lagoons, comfort, simplicity and ease are the keywords. The flybridge features comprehensive lounging space, and there’s a large cockpit with modular dining options. Another seating area exists between the saloon windows and the foredeck trampoline. The saloon is on two levels, with a retractable windscreen, and the hulls can be configured with anything from three to six double cabins.

Is it a catamaran or a monohull? Meet Futura 49

Buy a catamaran, but pay the berthing costs of a monohull. This is the idea behind the variable width Futura 49, launched a few months ago at La Grande Motte. But between the theory and the practice is a huge gulf, and it has taken designers Uli Bullmer and Gerhard Euchenhofer more than four years to bridge that. The result of their labours with naval architects at Judel Vrolijk is a craft with a beam of 7.98m in sailing mode, shrinking to 4.93m in ‘parking’ mode. The key to the system is the twin carbon cross beams that provide the stability for the electric motors to pull the two hulls together.

It has something of the true catamaran to it: the two hulls serve solely as floats, with no accommodation inside, while all the living is done on the platform that connects them. The Polynesians would have approved. Removing the living space from the hulls has allowed them to be more hydrodynamic. Futura has created a large superstructure that runs much further forward than it does on fixed cats. The dark wraparound windows contain a space that is divided up to form cabins at the forward end, with a galley and dining space at the stern opening onto the aft deck. The helm station is set into the coachroof, to starboard, with the winches mounted between seats, plus a big sunpad.

Anything from one to four cabins are optional. Note that the chart table is just a fold-down surface in the saloon, with no forward view and very limited side visibility. If the 49 proves successful – there is already a charter unit available in Croatia with Pitter Yachting – Futura plans to expand the range.
