Happy Easter and Pesach (Passover)!
Easter Sunday and Paesach (Passover) have an astronomical connection to the moon, with the Jewish Passover pre-dating the Christian Easter. Some believe that the full moon allowed for safer travelling by religious pilgrims of the time.
In 325 AD the Council of Nicaea determined that Easter should be observed on the Sunday following the first full moon that occurs after the vernal equinox, officially known as the Paschal Full Moon. The council fixed the equinox at March 21, but the astronomical timing of the equinox actually varies a little bit, and even occurs a full day early on Leap Years. This year, the equinox took place on March 20 at 6 pm EDT, and the full moon occurred that same day, at 9:43 pm EDT!
So why is Easter being observed on April 21 in 2019, instead of Sunday, March 24 (the Sunday after March’s full moon)? It’s because, as I stated above, the Council of Nicea fixed the equinox on March 21 – and that was the day AFTER the full moon this year.
In an added twist, if the post-equinox full moon falls on a Sunday, the following Sunday becomes Easter. The earliest that Easter can ever occur is March 22, which last happened in 1818, and won't happen again until 2285! If a full moon happens before March 21, Easter will be delayed by a full lunar month, plus up to six days – on April 25. That will happen in 2038.
Passover is celebrated from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan in the Jewish lunar calendar. It began with sundown last Friday night, which coincided with the first full moon after the spring equinox. In years when that full moon occurs early, Jewish religious leaders delay Passover by a month to ensure that spring-like weather conditions (warmer temperatures and flowers in bloom) have arrived in Israel. Last year’s Passover began about three weeks earlier, on March 27. The earliest that Passover can occur in our Gregorian calendar is March 25, which will next happen in 2089.
In Western Christianity, Easter sometimes precedes Passover by several weeks. The Eastern Orthodox Church uses the older Julian Calendar, and schedules Easter using the precise moment of the astronomical equinox and full moon as measured in Jerusalem (where the crucifixion and resurrection occurred). This ensures that Easter always occurs after Passover, since Jesus had traveled to Jerusalem to observe Passover. This year, Orthodox Easter will be observed on Sunday, April 28.
Lyrids Meteor Shower
The annual Lyrids meteor shower, derived from particles dropped by comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher), runs from April 16 to 25 every year and peaks before dawn on Monday morning. This shower can produce up to 18 meteors per hour, with occasional fireballs. True Lyrids will appear to be travelling away from a point in space (the shower’s radiant) near the bright star Vega, which will be high in the eastern sky before dawn. Unfortunately, a bright, gibbous moon will wash out all but the brightest meteors this year. I posted a diagram here.
You can start watching as soon as it's dark. Even when the peak number occurs before dawn, some meteors will still be visible before midnight, too. Don't bother to watch the radiant, since any meteors near it will have very soft trails. Bring a blanket and a chaise to avoid neck strain. And remember that binoculars and telescopes will not help; their fields of view are too narrow to see the long meteor trails. If you have friends or family along, don’t look at each other while chatting. Keep your eyes to the skies!
Tumblr media
(Above: After midnight on Monday night, i.e., Tuesday morning, the waning gibbous moon will pass close to bright Jupiter, as shown here at 5 am EDT. Two mornings later, the moon will land near dimmer Saturn (top left))
The Moon and Planets
After Friday’s full phase, the moon will wane and rise later (after midnight) with each passing day this week. As it moves into the latter stages of its monthly orbit around the Earth, the moon will become visible in the eastern pre-dawn sky and will pay a visit to some of the bright planets that currently reside there.
When the bright planet Jupiter rises in the southeastern sky at about 12:15 am local time on Tuesday morning, it will be positioned 3 finger widths to the lower left of the waning gibbous moon. The moon and planet will cross the sky together for the rest of the night, eventually moving to a point in the lower southwestern sky at sunrise. The duo will make a lovely photo opportunity when composed with an interesting foreground landscape! Jupiter will follow the same schedule, even after the moon moves away from it.
In the southeastern pre-dawn sky on Thursday morning, the almost last quarter moon will land less than 3 finger widths to the right of yellowish Saturn, which will rise after 2 am local time. If you are outside a little earlier, look for the Teapot-shaped stars of Sagittarius (the Archer)  positioned about a fist’s diameter to the lower right of the ringed planet and moon. The pairing will fit nicely into the field of view of binoculars, and make another nice photograph. Half a day later, at 13:00 GMT, observers in Eastern Australia and New Zealand will see the moon pass over (See what I did there?), or occult, Saturn.
On Friday evening, the moon will officially reach its last quarter phase, when it will be half illuminated, on its western (our left-hand) side. Remember that phases of the moon are controlled by the angle in space made by the three objects – sun, Earth, and moon. The rotation of the Earth, and who gets to see the phases when they happen, is on a separate schedule.

(Above: As shown here at 9 pm local time on Sunday evening, April 21, Mars remains the only bright planet in the evening sky this week. For the next several weeks, Mars will sit above Aldebaran, which is a similar in colour, but slightly brighter.)
Mars will continue to be easily visible for an hour after dusk every evening this week. But the later spring sunsets mean that Mars will set in the west just before midnight local time. Once the sky has darkened, look for Mars as a medium-bright, reddish pinpoint of light sitting less than one-third of the way up the western sky. Mars has been slowly shrinking in size and brightness as we increase our distance from it little-by-little. The bright reddish star Aldebaran will be sitting about a palm’s width below Mars this week. Don’t confuse them - it’s brighter than Mars.
On Friday evening, Mars’ orbital motion will carry it closely past a clump of three open star clusters (NGC 1746, 1750, and 1758). If your sky is dark enough, your binoculars might show a concentration of stars just to Mars’ lower left. A backyard telescope will show them better, but your optics will probably flip or invert the view – so check all around Mars for them. The best time to view should fall around 10 pm local time, when the sky is darker and Mars is higher.

(Above: On Friday evening, April 26, Mars’ orbital motion will carry it closely past three open star clusters (blue labelled yellow symbols). Use binoculars or a backyard telescope at low magnification before about 10 pm local time.)
During this week, the very bright planet Jupiter will rise over the southeastern horizon a little bit after midnight local time. By 6 am, Jupiter will remain visible in the lower part of the brightening sky, over the south-southwestern horizon. Starting next Sunday, Jupiter will begin to rise before midnight – on its way to become a prime target for star parties this summer! Yellowish Saturn will be sitting about 2.5 outstretched fist diameters to the left of Jupiter from 2 am local time until dawn. It, too, will add to your summer stargazing fun!
Mercury and Venus are together in the eastern sky just before sunrise this week, but they are surrounded by the dawn twilight, making much dimmer Mercury a challenge to find. Venus will rise at about 5:30 am local time. To help you find Mercury, Venus will be positioned about four finger widths to the upper right of the swift innermost planet. Both planets are swinging towards the sun and will soon disappear in solar conjunction.

Observing Ideas for This Week
If you missed last week’s note about what to see in the mid-April sky, I posted it here. Here are some more suggestions to look for, with unaided eyes and binoculars or telescopes.
Here’s an easy target in the northern sky. Polaris marks the tip of the handle of the Little Dipper, the asterism we also know as the constellation Ursa Minor (the Little Bear). In late April after dusk, the rest of the Little Dipper extends sideways to the right from Polaris, and curves strongly upwards towards the Big Dipper.
Tumblr media
(Above: The circumpolar stars inside the large blue circle, include both dippers and the winding constellation of Draco, the Dragon, as shown here at 9:15 pm local time. The bright star Arcturus sits just beyond the upper right corner of this sky chart.)
The magnitude 2.06 star at the outer edge of the Little Dipper’s bowl (and closest to the Big Dipper) is slightly dimmer than Polaris and fairly easy to see. This medium-cool, reddish star is named Kochab. The other five stars of the constellation may be too dim to see from the city, but binoculars will reveal them. Don’t forget that Polaris has a dimmer companion star tucked in close to it. A backyard telescope can see them both. As the sky rotates due to Earth’s spin, that little star revolves around Polaris.
The two dippers flank the tail of the long and winding constellation of Draco (the Dragon). It really looks like a dragon when you follow its stars!
Shortly after the sun sets in the west, the very bright star Arcturus will appear in the eastern sky, heralding the summer stargazing season. Arcturus is the fourth brightest star in the entire sky. Its name means “bear watcher” because the star follows Ursa Major around the northern sky. (The word Arctic, home of the polar bears, comes from the same root, the Greek word arktos.)
Tumblr media
(Above: Arcturus, the very bright, orange star that shines in the northeastern sky during mid-April evenings, can guide you to four globular star clusters (yellow symbols) and beyond them to the realm of the spring galaxies (coloured ellipses), as shown here for 9:30 pm local time.)
Four globular star clusters, spherical balls of millions of stars, populate the sky above Arcturus. At visual magnitude 6.2 and within reach of binoculars, Messier 3 is the brightest, and sits nearly 12 degrees (a generous fist’s diameter) above Arcturus. The dimmer NGC 5466, sometimes called the Snowglobe Cluster, sits less than a palm’s width to the upper left of Arcturus. Another bright globular designated Messier 53 sits 1.5 fists to the upper right of Arcturus and only a finger’s width below the star Diadem, the brightest star in Coma Berenices (Berenice’s Hair). NGC 5053, the dimmest of the four globulars, is located 1 finger’s width below Messier 53.
Above those globular clusters is the realm of the spring galaxies, in Virgo (the Maiden.) But that’s another story…
Keep looking up, and enjoy the sky when you do. I love questions and requests - so, send me some!

Play Me A Hurtin Tune
Trace 03/04/2019
Your name is Trace and sometime after the worst of the blizzard, on yet another cold day, you have the pleasure of being stuck working outdoors. Fortunately, your three layers of coat and scarves make it easy to hide the worst of your green skin. With just a little bit of makeup, you look normal enough to be able to traverse Crew territory without catching much attention. A risky job regardless, but you don't deserve anything else after your royal fuckup.
But you don't want to complain too loudly, because at least you're allowed to work in the field and don't have to rot in a cell. And this way, no one else has to risk their neck for this, because you're still the best for this kinda job.
It's still a tedious task. Trying to track down local joints and shady dealerships without contacts and without standing out too much, and from there try to pin down their supply lines, since you want to hit them where it hurts.
It's not the first day you're snooping around and you're finally starting to pick up some leads. One is especially promising - a nearby shop owner. Not the front for a speakeasy or arms dealer or anything himself, but he's supposed to get you into wherever you need. With any luck, he's the only contact you need to get this job done and over with and finally head home, so with hasty steps you head to the adress you were given.
NPC/Karako 03/04/2019
You are Karako Pierot. You're on the job today now that the blizzard isn't going to straight up murder you so you aren't wearing your paints. Too easy to pick out your blood color with it, though you dislike being without. The greater generic-ness to your appearance is good just in case. You're doing a pick up at one of the little stores, one you've not been to before yet.
To they eyes of most folks, you are some troll kid either doing errands or something. Your stunted growth and baby face serve you well in this job.
Seeing someone else making their way to the shop in the distance, you take a small turn to another place across the street from your destination in order to wait for him to go. Letting people see the exchange is a big ol' no no. Better to wait and be careful. You pretend to shop around while keeping an eye out on the other store front to see this random brother leave. You don't figure it'll be long.
March 5, 2019
Trace 03/05/2019
You slip into the store, finally free of the merciless cold. You shake yourself a little, then loosen your scarves and coat a little, trying to relax and act all casual, then have a look around the little hardware store. Not very busy, especially during this time of the day and this kind of weather.
"God damn cold", you curse more to yourself than the store owner. "Busted some pipes" you quickly improvise. Good enough reason to be here. Over to the pipes and appropriate tools you go. "Always the same shit every year. Not been this bad in a while tho, has it?" This is more directed at the store owner now as you draw closer.
NPC/Karako 03/05/2019
You are currently the owner of this little hardware store. You are a Dersite without a glamour and you glance over to the customer who's entered. Casually you nod to his question, "Yeah, pretty nasty winter this year. I except spring will do it's best to make us miss the cold anyway."
Meanwhile the smol clown is still watching the shop door from across the street.
March 6, 2019
Trace 03/06/2019
Still oblivious to the potential onlooker, you pick up some pipes and look them over, pretending to measure and compare them for size. You need a fitting one after all.
You crack a short laugh. "Yeah, probably. But 'least you can still walk outside. Not with a storm like that though." With a few pieces of tools and metal picked out that look like they could vaguely go together, you head up towards the counter.
"Hey, uh. Friend of mine told me you know where to some more special hardware.. Y'know?" A clumsy approach, but it would hopefully sell the awkward neighbour act. "Uh, just in case. Had some shady figures sneaking around lately."
NPC/Karako 03/06/2019
You, the owner of the shop, raise an eyebrow. If this guy was looking for a piece off the record he probably had something in mind for it. You start to ring up the pipes as you say, "Oh? Who's the friend? Some folks get confused." Plausible deniability was important but if this guy had a good name then you'll supply him per orders from the top.
March 8, 2019
Trace Last Friday at 9:44 AM
More improvising, here we go. You got more than enough practice with that, but it's always a gamble if you can sell the story properly.
"Neighbour of mine. A-something. Acqui--? Uh, sorry. Can never remember those old Derse style names. AK. If that's even his right name." You lean in a little. Can't have anyone snooping on you admitting crimes after all. "Been playing poker with him over a few drinks. Y'know. We got talking about this and that and he showed me his iron. Told me to ask around here. You know something, right?"
NPC/Karako Last Friday at 2:17 PM
Not the right name but someone must be blabbing for this guy to be here. You could keep playing dumb or you could possibly draw him further in and catch him for the bosses. After all, if someone is talkin' to the wrong people they'd better do something about it, right?
You've got your gun on you so this shouldn't be hard. "Right... I might know somethin depending on what you have in mind," you say casually.
The small clown across the street is starting to get a lil bit restless. shouldn't the guy be done in there by now? What's going on? Should he go get a closer look?
Trace Last Friday at 7:28 PM
You watch him closely, on the lookout for any reaction that would tip you off if he's buying it or having his doubts. Always need to be prepared for the worst, though you'd really like to avoid having to get rid of someone in the midst of Crew territory. "Uh, y'know. Something small and simple that gets the job done. Not an expert with these things."
NPC/Karako Last Friday at 7:50 PM
You arch an eyebrow but nod slightly. "I might have something," you say. Perhaps if you can get him in the back you can subdue him and hand him over to the bosses for questioning. You push yourself off the counter as you speak, "If you're interested in lookin' I can show you." You take the few steps that separate the counter and door to the back and hold it open for him.
You, Karako, are getting all kinds of itchy anxious about how long that guy's been in there. You've got at least five more locations to pick up and drop at for the day and you're going to run behind and disappoint Boss Boxcars who was nice enough to give you this job. You're also wanting to finish work fast so you can go check on your brother's hive just to make sure he still exists and stuff.
You leave the shop you've been loitering in and sneak over to the one you need to pick up from, hiding in an alleyway. You look for a side window or some spot where you can get a listen to what's going on. Finding one, you are disappointed to see it's to the back room and duck down out of view and try to think.
March 11, 2019
Trace Last Monday at 6:45 PM
You can't believe it worked so easily. Honestly, you don't believe it, and intuition rarely let you down. Still, you have a chance to get some information out of him, no matter how this goes. Just gotta be on your guard.
You keep up the act for now, giving him a dopey and satisfied grin, like an idiot that thinks he just hit the jackpot. "Sure do, whatchu got?" You follow him around the corner, one hand around the pipes you're claiming to purchase, the other digging in your hand for more backup if you need it.
NPC/Karako Last Monday at 7:17 PM
Trying to get the guy to turn his back to you, you open a large locked box then step back with a gesture for him to look. You've got a hammer within reach. You'd rather use that than your gun since the goal is to capture him and a gunshot could catch the attention of cops if word gets back to them.
You, the small clown, hear voices now and you listen very alert and curious as to what is going on here.
March 12, 2019
Trace Last Tuesday at 7:47 AM
"Is that where the treasure is?" You step up to the box, though you go for more of a sideways glance, making sure you don't fully offer your back to him. You're not a fool, you just play one. But you're still very much interested in what you can find in the box. Does he actually have some guns, or is it a trap?
NPC/Karako Last Tuesday at 1:28 PM
There are in fact some guns in the box. None of the big stuff of course, that's more securely hidden, but several hand guns can clearly be seen. You can't help but be frustrated that this idiot isn't turning his back to you. But he doesn't seem like the brightest of individuals, so you bank on taking him off guard and snatch up the hammer and attempt to whack him with the blunt side in the head.
Now you being Karako again, hear the word treasure and it makes you curious enough to risk peeping into the window again while still trying to remain unseen. You've noticed there's a door nearby probably from that room to out here so you gotta be careful no body comes after you.
Trace Last Tuesday at 9:16 PM
You want to reach into the box, but stop yourself short. Partially because it's putting yourself in a more risky and disadvantaged position, partially because he might not like it. "Ahh, may I.. touch them?" you ask. "That's a lotta babes. Where are you getting them?"
He's not giving you the reply you're hoping for thought. You catch the movement in the corner of your eye just in time to react. Melee has never been one of your core strengths, but you've been expecting it, so you easily manage to deflect his arm with the pipe in your hand.
You don't plan to give him a chance to recover and reconsider his attack. Instead, you hit him over the head with the very same pipe, then grab him by the collar and shove him against the nearest shelf.
"'s not a nice way to treat a customer, sir." Well, the jig is up for sure. At this point all you can do is try to get as much info out of him as you can, then decide whether he's a liability that knows too much. "Come on, I just wanted to know who got you the guns, alright? Doesn't have to be this hard and painful for either of us." You try your best to make this sound like a genuinely nice offer, but you can hardly hide the snarl in your voice.
NPC/Karako Yesterday at 12:03 AM
After the bash to your head with the pipe, you're dazed for a moment before you growl in return, "Nobody." You then attempt to get your gun from the back of your trousers. Ain't no way you're gonna squeal, or at least that's what you think. Everyone thinks they're tough till the pressure is on.
Once again Karako, you cover your mouth as you see the shop keeper attempt to attack the the guy you'd been waiting to leave then bite back a honk as that same guy bashes the shopkeep in the noggin. Thus far you watch this play out in silence. Ya this isn't good at all and you don't quite think yet to message someone about it.
Should you bust in there and help? Or would that be a mistake? Who is this guy. You squint and stare at him, trying to lock his face in your brain in case it's important.
Trace Yesterday at 8:27 PM
"Bullshit", you hiss. "I'm not-" you want to continue, but trail off when you notice him wiggling around. Not the kind of a guy struggling to escape, but the subtle ones of someone trying to reach for something.
You grunt annoyed and reach for your own pocket, then shove your knife against his throat, not caring if you draw a little blood. "You better stop that right there" you growl while trying to feel his gun to remove it.
NPC/Karako Yesterday at 8:52 PM
The knife scraping against your carapace and digging in a bit causes you to freeze. It's not hard for your assailant to find your gun. And as you feel him attempt to take your last weapon, you attempt to punch him in the jaw to knock him away from you.
Being the small clown, you pull out a knife of your own as you continue to debate over what to do.
Trace Yesterday at 10:03 PM
Oh, he just had to go for it, huh. He manages to hit you where he intended, but you instinctly drive the knife into his neck at the same time. "The fuck-" You pull away some snarl angrily, baring your teeth, then lean back in to drive the knife even deeper. He's already a dead man, at least you can make sure he won't make a noise to give you some more time to look for clues in peace.
NPC/Karako Yesterday at 10:36 PM
You are dead/dying and with a blade in your neck you crumble to the floor like a sack of potatoes.
Back to being yourself, Karako, you see the punch and from that the man's underbite and a hint of green skin. And then the shopkeep has a knife in his neck! You can't help but honk rather loudly at the green you see as it means this isn't just some guy but a genuine Felt guy who just did a murder.
Then realizing the sound you made, you duck out of the window's view coving your mouth in horror. Oh no. OH FUCK
Trace Yesterday at 10:53 PM
You whirl around when you hear the noise. Someone was there.. and you got a fraction of a second to decide what to do.
Chances are, if you leave now, no cop in the city would be able to incriminate you. But if the crew gets wind of someone sniffing around and attacking their dealers, that'll blow all your work out of the water.
While the dude gurgles through his last breath, you grab his gun and dart through the backdoor to try and catch the witness.
NPC/Karako Yesterday at 11:00 PM
As soon as you hear the sound of the door handle being turned you barrel down the alleyway, with a leap you grab onto the bottom of a fire escape ladder and try to climb to the roof before he can hurt you. If you can get to the roofs you can make a get away pretty easy you bet.
March 14, 2019
Trace Today at 9:39 AM
A troll. A small one. The horns are obvious enough, but you can't figure out much more than that from behind. If he gets away, that's that. Fortunately, trails make it easy enough to follow.
You give chase immediately. You don't even try to tell him to wait. Obvious enough that he wouldn't, so you save your breath for running.
What he might have up on you in speed, you can make up with longer legs, so you're at the ladder not too long after him and climb up.
NPC/Karako Today at 10:35 AM
You hear the clang of metal signalling that he's after you. Shit shit SHIT. You don't hesitate to continue scuttling your way up and climb over the edge of the roof.
Hiding isn't an option cause if you're found it's not just a beating you'll get, you're sure you'll be super motherfuckin dead. So you charge accross the rooftop with all your might and go for the leap to the building next door.
Trace Today at 7:46 PM
You reach the top of the roof shortly after - and see him charging towards the edge. Well uh. Huh. You're great at following people, but you're not out to tempt your fate with acrobatics like these. But you can't let him get away. Curse it.
Before you can second-guess yourself, you lift the gun you picked up and aim at him. Fortunately, the gun was actually loaded and ready. Unfortunately, the little guy is way too agile and even though you're not the worst shot, you miss all three bullets. Fuck.
NPC/Karako Today at 8:11 PM
It sure seems like he missed as you hear the sound of the gun go off three times. Little do you and he realize that his aim was not entirely off as you are so hyped on adrenaline(or the troll variant of that) and survival instinct that your brain has not yet been notified of the wound in your lower right side.
You leap to the next roof and keep going till the pain signals reach your think pan. It makes you trip and you  roll down the slope of the next roof and thankfully you fall into a large drift of snow. Still hurts like a motherfuck along with the gunshot wound. There are people on the street making noise after hearing the gunshots and you scramble out of the snowbank and clutching your side you stagger to a hiding place. Hopefully that guy can't follow you and find you.
You then remember the fact that your phone is a thing that exists and with purple stained fingers you make a call.
Trace Today at 11:01 PM
Well, fuck, that sure went badly. You follow him to the edge of the roof you're on, but no further. You think you can spot a bit of blood, so it seems like you've hit him after all. Which... might actually make your situation worse. Before, there was a chance that was just a random bystander scared forever into silence. But now he is injured and in need of help, so someone is probably going to hear about this, be it the police or the crew.
You also realize that... you just fired off a gun in crew territory. It's bound to attract some attention, so you can't afford to linger around here for much longer. Surely you could try following his trail, but that is getting riskier by the moment. Plus, you still need to dig up more information.
Begrudgingly, you make your way down and back to the hardware store to find what notes you can and leave a few minutes later. You also make a point to grab a few guns out of the box, only to toss them into the next best dumpster. Might be enough to make it all look merely like an arms deal gone wrong.

Crawler sighting 56 part 1
"Hi! I don't really know how to start this post, its my first one. At the time of writing this I am living in western Pennsylvania, a little south of Pittsburgh. I was in Boy Scouts for most of my life so I feel very comfortable in the woods and go camping often. Upon hearing Governor Wolf's school closure plan I decided that it was time for some cold weather camping. It was March, it wasn't that cold but it did drop to 40 f at night, and the people who I went weren't really avid campers. If you're from Pittsburgh you may know the Boggs campsite on the montour trail, that's where we went. They, of course, only brought weed and alcohol and didn't bring any sleeping bags, blankets, or pillows so naturally I assumed they were gonna have to sit by the fire all night. It was light when we first got there and the fire pit was still smoldering, very cool, we use the coals from the previous camper's fire to light ours and immediately I knew that I would have to provide wood for the fire until I went to bed, they passed out beers at around 3 PM (times are gonna be a bit dodgy because I wasn't near my phone) and after having 2-3 beers I just wanted dinner. Now, that they did for me. they made ramen noodles and cheese which was amazing (they had a weird name for it) and burgers over the fire. By this time it would have had to have been close to 5PM because it started to rain a little bit, as was forecasted, so we took shelter in the lean to shelter that was on site and occasionally one of them would throw some sticks on the fire (sticks were all they seemed to be able to find even though I brought 2 saws and an axe) and I would cut up some logs. By the time the rain stopped all 4 of us smoked a blunt and were sitting around the fire, I was light out so well call it 7PM. after a while of just hanging out they ask if I had any blankets. I always have blankets. Nothing special but we've had some pretty bad snow storms in the past and a couple scratchy car blankets are always useful. they each got a blanket except for R, as we'll call him, who got my summer sleeping bag that I brought just in case. By now it was dark, 9-9:30PM?, and the fire was getting low. I start off to find some more wood because they wanted to smoke another blunt. Now you have to understand that I'm 6'5" and a semi frequent user of the devils lettuce so my tolerance is kinda high. I return with the wood and we spark up another blunt, a smaller one, and just kinda hang out and talk and listen to music while were high as shit. Good times. Eventually the fire, again, dies down a little bit and, again, its my job to get more wood. Because we had been there for a while and there were people there before us most of the wood near the shelter was either really small or all used up so I had to keep going farther and farther away from camp to find wood. 12:30AM, close to 50 f still so were all doing well. I have a flashlight, a really nice one that I use for scuba diving, that is kinda bright so I use it on the low setting on land. At this point I'm far enough away from camp that my friends can't really see me, there's like an embankment between the montour trail and someone's driveway that you have to cross to get to more woods, but I'm comfortable alone because I knew what I was doing and they could fs hear me if I needed them. I start to hear a weird whistling sound, kinda like someone inhaling through a snorkel, but I chalk it up to the wind. The air was starting to get kinda cold so I just took back what I had and put some on the fire. 1-2AM, ~40 f with some wind, nothing severe. I have on 2 long sleeve shirts and an army surplus coat that is SUPER warm but my friends are in windbreakers and hoodies and, oh yeah, its raining. Off to get more wood. this time I started taking into consideration the type of wood that I would collect, there was a lot of pine but that burns fast which is why I had to go collect it so often. The stretch of woods near the driveway was pretty much all pine, a few maples but nothing big."

Hello all, The lakes boats are put away and the riverboats are out looking for steelhead when the weather allows. I have been working on maintenance and getting ready for 2020. I have also been booking trips for next year and some prime weeks are already filling in nicely. Fishing season will be here before we know it.
Before I get talking about the year I want to offer gift certificates for anyone still looking for a gift idea or if you are just looking to get out fishing. I am offering $50 off any full boat trip (4 people) and a river trip with 2 or 3 people. Since I am so late on this, this offer will be available from now till the end of the show season which is March 22nd for me.
Tumblr media
Talking about shows, I will be at the Ultimate fishing show in Novi, Grand Rapids ultimate fishing show and new this year, Gaylord hunting and fishing show. I will also be at the Kensington Community church Wildgame Dinner and both nights for the Woodside Wild Game dinner. Both dinners will have trips that I have donated to. If anyone knows of other wild game dinner, let me know as I love working with dinners like these. Preferably in the TC area or in the metro detroit area depending on time. I will be offering pretty much the same deals as what is below.
This year Chromeseekers had it’s best year ever on the water. Also, new this year was another fishing company I created called Michigan Walleye Fishing Charters. I still can’t believe the URL was available and that is how I named this side of the business. You can’t get a more easy name than that. With the loss of my captain job working for another company right before the season started, you guys sure did come through for me when booking Detroit river trips and Lake St Clair trips.
With the new company, I needed another boat. Luckily I found a 17 ft G3 walleye boat. It’s one of those fish and ski’s boat but it did a great job. I have to be a little pickier on LSC with the weather but we were able to get the job done and put plenty of walleye on the boat.
youtube
With my move to Frankfort a few years ago I decided it was time to look for a drift boat so I could fish the Betsie and stay at my house. With the growth of my company I knew I didn’t want to spend all my nights sleeping in my truck on the PM river where I originally started guiding. After searching for 6 months one of my clients was selling a stealthcraft drift boat. I was able to buy that boat and move 95% of trips to the Betsie river. Thanks Brandon! If someone didn’t want to do that I stuck to my word and still fished the PM. This was a great move and we had a great season on the Betsie river putting lots of salmon in the boat. Thank you to everyone who made that switch with me. The Betsie will be my river from here on out. If someone still want to fish the PM I am still available for that.
Steelhead Fishing: It seems like so long ago but we started 2019 off with steelhead fishing the Big Manistee. The steelhead fishing started off slow due to the cold weather but got better as the season progressed. This year in April we switched over to bottom bouncing which helped put more fish on the line. I have always loved watching that bobber go down but over the years I have noticed that the guys bottom bouncing do better during the peak seasons. I think it has something to do with the pressure that these steelhead get during peak season. So that is why I made the switch and it helped big. I will do the same thing this year and looking forward to it.
So far steelhead fishing has been ok this fall/winter putting a few fish in the boat every trip on the Betsie River. If you want to get out, please let me know. Until March 1, I am doing 6-hour trips for $300 and 4 hours of trips for $250. These rates are for 1 – 2 people. A 3rd person can be added for $75 but does need waders.
Tumblr media
Detroit River Walleye Fishing: We had a great first year of fishing on the Detroit River. If you could feel bottom while jigging, you were catching walleye. The walleye bite was not as good as last year but it was still pretty phenomenal most of the time. We did catch some good average catches and it should only be better this year.
When Memorial day happened we then switched over to trolling the shallows of Lake St. Clair. Trolling the shallows for walleye in some of my favorites ways to catch walleye. It can be fast and furious at times. As the summer progressed, We slowly moved out to the Channel and some of the other hot spots. Although limits were sometimes tough, we still did put plenty of fish in the boat.
Frankfort Big Lake Kings and Trout: July was pretty quiet with trips do to the loss of the captain job at the other company so I mostly got the big boat ready and spent time with family and friends and working on the vacation rentals business. Towards mid-July, I headed up to Frankfort to prepare for the Benzy Frenzy 333 and what a start we had. After a lot of charter buddies telling me the salmon fishing was slow, we managed to go out and go 7-8 putting a 26 lb and a 22 lb king in the boat. Then the Frenzy happened and we were able to take 2nd putting 69 lbs of salmon on the boat between 3 fish. We were able to beat out some really good fishermen.
Tumblr media
Charters then started and just like typical Lake Michigan Salmon fishing lately, we had our good days as well as our bad days. This is due to the DNR cutting our salmon plants down and relying mostly on natural reproduction. There were times when no salmon were around Frankfort due to these cuts. Even though we rely on natural reproduction in the Frankfort area, we also target the plants going up the Lake Michigan shoreline to the Boardman, Meduas creek and all those other areas that get planted. End of July and early August we were able to get after the Lake Trout when salmon fishing was slow. After about Mid August, the Lake Trout shut off and it was strictly salmon.
The highlight of the summer was on a Sunday afternoon putting a Michigan Tuna, a 31 lb King Salmon in the boat. When Nate put the net around the fish we couldn’t believe it. It was one of the biggest Kings I had ever seen.  We also had one of the craziest nights of salmon fishing. Rods were going off all over the place and we didn’t have enough people in the boat. Nate and I worked our tails off and Don and his buddies did a great job keeping the fish out of each other’s way. I think we landed like 6 out of 9 kings. The fillets of fish that went home with them seamed endless. Other then the 333, it was once of the biggest average of fish we had. It was a great night.
Tumblr media
A week before labor day we saw our first good push of King Salmon up the Betsie and we were right on them with the new drift boat. It started off like a normal year where at first light we were catching fish chucking thundersticks. After the first few hours of lights, it turned into a skein bite. You could see the fish moving around in the holes. As the days started going by in September, we started seeing rain. Then more rain and the rain never stopped. Rivers hit record high levels for September. I started to wonder if I need to build an ark. The skein bite becomes very tough at times but the thunderstick bite got better and better sometimes lasting all trip long. It was a ton of fun catching these fish on thundersticks all day. We hooked a ton of fish this year but due to their size, controlling them in the small Betsie river was sometimes not an option. If you did catch one, you definitely had a story to take home and you earned it.
Charters have slowed down since and I was able to put in my time for hunting. As many of you know, I drew a Bear Tag for the east side of the state after 10 years of waiting. With all my hard work I put in between trips toward a bear, it was not looking good. They were not showing up on camera and baits were not getting hit. But, somehow during the last week, we were able to get a good bear coming into the bait and I got the job done within 3 minutes of climbing into my tree. The bear was somewhere between 200 and 225 lbs and just barely missed pope and young. My deer season was a quick one and I was able to put a 6 point down and a giant public land 10 points onto the ground. It was the best hunting season I have ever experienced and I am already looking forward to 2020. I hope all my clients that hunt were able to get out and enjoy the woods. I look forward to hearing the stories on our next trips together.
Below are my prices to get out with me for next year. All trips you can add a 3 or a 4th person for an additional fee depending on the boat. If you book a second trip with me for the year you do get $50 off a full boat trip. River Salmon and Steelhead river trips do get $50 off for a two-person 6-hour trip. Also, take note that I will be available a little earlier for Detroit River Walleye in April. Mid-May I will be pulling my boat out of the Detroit river and trailering it for the rest of the season to have access to more fish. This will allow me to have access to the St Clair River Walleye fishing, Lake St Clair and still allow me to fish the Detroit River. The fishing can be hot at different locations and I don’t want to be stuck on the Detroit River if it slows down in mid-may like it sometimes does.
I will be leaving the walleye fishery to head up to Frankfort to fish for Salmon and Trout starting July 2nd. The Lake Trout bite has been epic the last couple years and I want to get in on that. Plus, who doesn’t love being in Northern Michigan in July. The rest of the season we will be chasing salmon and steelhead in NW Michigan. If you have a specific day you want to get out, make sure you get a hold of me as soon as possible as some seasons are starting to fill in. I already have limited spots available during mid-September for kings.
People / Price / Event 1 – 2 $375 Betsie or Manistee Steelhead now through April 12 1 – 3 $400 Detroit River Walleye – April 17th – End of May 1 – 4 $350 for Silver Bass May 15 – June 5 1 – 3 $350 Lake St Clair Walleye: May 20 – June 28 1 – 3 $425 Frankfort Salmon and Trout: July 5th – Sep 7 1 – 2 $375 Betsie River Salmon: Aug 24 – Oct 10 1 – 2 $375 Manistee River Salmon October 5th – ? 1 – 2 $375 Betsie and Manistee River Steelhead Oct 1 – ?
I have big goals for this year and I am looking forward to getting the season moving. I am hoping to trade in both Lake Boats and get a more economical boat. Preferably a Smokercraft Offshore or a Hewescraft of some sort. I want something that will allow me to chase both salmon and steelhead. If you have ever owned a boat, you know exactly why I want to do this 😛 (B.ust O.ut A.nother. T.housand). I will not be getting rid of any boats until I have that new boat and it’s inspected.
I am also looking for a part-time guide and deckhand to help me out with some trips. You must be local to the Frankfort area or have a place to stay during peak trip times, self-starter, punctual and drug-free. There are no exceptions.
This is getting pretty long so I will end it on this note. I want to Thanks each and everyone one of you that books with me year after year. The multiple trips, the tips and everything in between. I am very humbled that I have some of the best clients that allow me to do this every year. I look forward to sharing more adventures with everyone. Thank you for letting me be your Captain!
Merry Christmas!
P.S. I will be signing off of Facebook and Instagram starting on Christmas day for a month. If you need to reach me, you can get a hold of me here or through my phone.

Let’s be history detectives...
As I’ve been posting old photos from my collection on here and my personal blog I’ve mentioned a few times that my favorite thing in the world is to buy historical photos/albums/diaries/etc. with little or no identification and try to track down clues about them.
I’ve received a few PMs (and get questioned often in real life) as to how I go about this, so I thought I would document the project I’m working on today to give people a basic idea of my process.
TODAY’S PROJECT...
Tumblr media
is this “A Line A Day” five year diary which covers the years 1933-1937.
I’ve featured it before on Ye Olde News for it’s page of “Nothing Special” entries.
The diary has no name in it and the majority of the entries are incredibly vague such as “I went downtown” or “It snowed today”.
Let’s see what we can find out.
Let’s start by looking at an average page. I’ve chosen February 20th, which appears to have been our mystery diarist’s birthday.
Tumblr media
As you can see, there’s nothing overly specific, but definitely enough to get started.
When approaching these projects my process is always
When? Where? and Who?
in that order.
I approach where before who because it narrows down your search parameters by an incredible degree.
For example consider the difference of looking for someone named Steve in the United States vs looking for someone named Steve in Providence, Rhode Island. It’s still a big sample size, but it eliminates about 318.7 million possible people.
We know when, so we can skip that part.
Where is next.
As far as a very general area, the author mentions quite a few American-centric events, such as President Roosevelt’s inauguration and the Lindbergh Baby trial. There are also quite a few mentions of blizzards, below zero temperatures and spring flooding. These hints would suggest that we are probably looking somewhere in the the Midwest or New England.
As for specifics, there’s not a lot to go on. Our diarist mentions the names of a few restaurants and theaters, as well as some street names (they “got pinched” running a red light!), but nothing unique enough to draw any conclusions.
Without anything definitive to go on I’ve decided to help use the “Who” to find the “Where”. More specifically any really bizarre names.
As you can see in the page I posted most of the names listed are incredibly common, and usually don’t include the last names. We’re not going to have much luck searching for “Donnie” or “Janet”.
Skimming through the rest of the diary I find just what I need. “Inez Legeyt” and “Ebba Lundborg”. Two truly bizarre names, both mentioned as people at a party our diarist went to.
Plugging “Inez Legeyt” into google comes up with 9 results, one of which is
Tumblr media
Hartford, CT! That’s in our target area. But I like to be sure, so let’s see if there was an Ebba Lundborg in Hartford at the same time...
Tumblr media
Bingo! And after checking the street names mentioned, I’m convinced we have our city.
Now onto Who...
Let’s see what we can figure out about our diarist.
There are mentions of going to buy new dresses, so we’re looking for a woman.
She appears to live alone, and never mentions a husband or children.
She mentions going to work, but also mentions school being closed for weather, as well as teachers conventions and “summer break”. This suggests we’re probably looking for someone who was either a teacher or worked in a school in some capacity.
“Pa” is mentioned, but never “Ma”. And later on the diary mentions Pa’s girlfriends (referred to as #1 and #2!), so it appears that Pa is single, most likely a widower.
Donnie and Ann are mentioned a lot, so they were presumably either close friends or relatives.
So pulling together our When, Where and Who: our diarist is a single woman who worked at a school in Hartford, CT between 1933 and 1937.
Good clues, and a whole lot more that we knew before, but we still need that Wow! piece of info to pull it all together.
The Wow clue!
I sat down and read the diary thoroughly, and on February 29th, 1936 I came across just what I was looking for.
Tumblr media
“Got some new glasses today. Pa & Donnie left for Bermuda.”
Why is this important?
Vetting people coming in and out of the country may be dominating the headlines this month, but it’s an issue that goes back well into the 19th century.
The 1930s had their own immigration crisis caused by the rise of the Nazi Party to power in 1933. Therefore records of people who entered the United States in the 1930s are very thorough, whether they were immigrants or not. If Pa and Donnie left the country, they would have had to have come back in through customs, and there will be a record of that!
Going a week later in the diary I found the entry for March 6, 1936, simply...
“Pa and Donnie returned.”
Going on ancestry.com (which unfortunately does cost money to use) I was able to find that the only ship coming into a New England port from Bermuda on March 6, 1936 was the S. S. Monarch of Bermuda, which was carrying 1,052 passengers and crew.
Let’s see if we can narrow that down. How many of them were named Donnie/Donald/Don etc.?
Tumblr media
Only seven! That’s a sample size we can work with.
And look at this!
Tumblr media
Donald W. Preston, age 33 from Hartford, CT!
And he’s traveling with a man named Frank Preston.
If Frank Preston is “Pa”, that would presumably make Donnie our diarist’s brother.
But again, we need more proof. Going to the 1940 Census we find that...
Tumblr media
Donnie’s wife is indeed named Ann(e). Things are looking good on this lead!
Going back ten years we find Donnie with...
Tumblr media
Frank with his still-living wife Mabel, as well as an older sister named Doris.
Could Doris be our diarist???
Tumblr media
Her profession on the 1930 census is listed as “Secretary - Weaver High School”! That fits exactly what were looking for!
By the 1940 census Doris is living on her own, still working as a school secretary.
I decided to look up Weaver High School yearbooks from the era and by comparing the names of other teachers and staff members to names mentioned in the diary I’m convinced we’ve found our diarist!
And look what else I found in the 1946 yearbook...
Tumblr media
Hi Doris! Nice glasses!
I dug around a little bit more and am now 100% convinced that our diarist was:
Doris Louisa Preston of Hartford, Connecticut
born February 20, 1901 - died February 2, 1952
This whole project took me about four hours of research with a few breaks and dead ends.
I’ve been doing research like this as a hobby (and occasionally professionally) for about 10 years.

28 March 2000 - Kremlin Bicêtre army base, Montmartre, top of the Grande Arche de La Défense and last time for 2000 on the M8
Bonjour mesdames et messieurs!
Today is Tuesday the 28th March 2000, and the last full day of my visit to Paris.  What should we do today?  I have always enjoyed going to Sacre Coeur de Montmartre, and have always wanted to go to the top of the Grande Arche de La Défense, as I had previously done on the Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower.  There was one curiosity on the left bank, just south of the Paris city limits towards Villejuif through Place d'Italie.  Before I made a plan, I had to have breakfast at 6:45 AM.  I decided first to go to the Forte de Bicêtre at Kremlin Bicêtre.
About 7 AM I walked to the Crozatier bus stop on Rue du Faubourg St. Antoine and Rue Crozatier, just a few hundred meters from Rue Trousseau.  I boarded bus line 86 and took it as far as the Sully Morland Metro station, via Bastille.  At Sully Morland I could catch the M7 to Villejuif and stop at the Kremlin Bicêtre. However I was a bit impatient and caught the Mairie d'Ivry branch train.  Two stops after Place d'Italie, I had to alight at Maison Blanche and wait on the next train to Villejuif Louis Aragon.  From there it was just one metro stop away to Le Kremlin Bicêtre.
What was expected to be at the Fort de Bicêtre at Kremlin Bicêtre?  It is an actual fortress.  It is not as exciting to see as the one in Moscow.  And there is no external mausoleum for any leader that I am aware of. From the Kremlin Bicêtre metro stop, I took the bus line 47 to Barnufles la Piscine and walked down Avenue Charles Gide to the driveway of Fort de Bicêtre and then uphill to the northern gates. At the time it was not equipped to handle visitors, so there was nothing much to do but stand outside the big green gate with FORT DE BICÊTRE in big letters.  Note from Wikipedia:  "Since it is still used by the Ministry of Defense, the fort is closed to the public. However, tours are organized for European Heritage Days in September.".  About 7:55 AM I went back to the metro station and around 8:06 AM I boarded the M7 on the way back to the AIJ to get some more freshly charged camera batteries.
I took the M7 to Place d'Italie and changed for the M5 to Bastille.  The ride went uneventful until 8:23 AM when an Eric Clapton impersonator boarded the M5 at Gare d'Austerlitz.  While the train was crossing the Seine for Quai de la Rapée, he performed a nice guitar solo of "Tears in Heaven".  That lasted until a minute prior to the train reaching Bastille, when he did an alto saxophone solo of a different song.  The train reached Bastille about 8:30 AM.
I went one stop on the M8 to Ledru Rollin.  There was a bunch of children, maybe about 50 of them, leaving the AIJ.  They were lined up on the Rue du Faubourg St Antoine just after Chez Tony.  I went to my room and collected one of my video camera batteries and about 9:30 AM I left for the city limit at Porte de Charenton, seven stops away from Ledru Rollin. There was a city boundary bus line that I could take to Porte de Bagnolet via Porte de Vincennes.
At Porte de Bagnolet I could take the M3 to Gambetta.  Gambetta used to be a branch off the M3 line for Les Lilas, but it became a separate line known as the M3Bis.  There was supposed to be a station after Porte de Lilas called Haxo, which would connect to the 7Bis line, but the plan was tabled, and it seems like Haxo would need to be reconstructed in order to be able to be used, possibly for a future M17 line or so I have heard.  The 3Bis stations don't look too much different than those built in the 1920s to 1940s.  The one thing I noticed about Porte des Lilas, at the north end of the 3Bis exit platform, was an upwards escalator with wooden steps.  I had not seen such an escalator since the 1970s when I first rode the Northern Line in London.  Back then London Underground was operating 1938 tube stock, the one with wooden flooring, similar to that of the escalators.
At Porte des Lilas, I had a quick snack of a lemon crêpe.  It tasted good also with powdered sugar.  Not bad for about 10 FF.  I then took the M11 to Belleville and transferred to the M2 which I rode until I arrived at Anvers.  Anvers is the southern access point for the Montmartre and its respective funicular train at Place Saint Pierre.  The train requires the same fare as the Metro.  Paris Visite is also valid.  I spent maybe twenty minutes looking at the Sacre Coeur and then southeast towards Gare du Nord, République, Bagnolet and Vincennes.  I saw a "living statue" standing on the pillar of the stairway to Sacre Coeur.  The noontime bells rang.  Then I took the funicular down.  I returned again in April 2008, February 2009 and September 2011, and spent more time exploring the nouveaux artes area between Rue Norvins and Rue de Saules. Even one time I spent an evening at the Lapin Agile on Rue de Saules.
I wanted to walk from the funicular station to Pigalle.  I walked from Place St Pierre on Rue d'Orsel, then Rue des Martyrs and I ended up at 12:30 PM at the Pigalle station.  Sadly the Moulin Rouge was nowhere to be seen.  It turns out that the actual Moulin Rouge is close to the Pigalle station and is along Boulevard de Clichy, but is closest to the Blanche station, just one metro stop away.
I caught the M2 to Place de Clichy, transferred to the M13 and went northeast to St Denis Université. At La Fourche, is the separation station, where the M13 separates for two branches, one to Gabriel Péri and the other to St Denis Université.  The M13 branch to Gabriel Péri has since been extended two stations to Asnières-Gennevilliers Les Courtilles.  At Saint Denis Université there was not much of touristic value to see, so I had a sandwich at a nearby bar.  About 1:20 PM I took a bus which I thought would take me to the St Denis RER D station, but somehow I ended up at Garges-Sarcelles instead.  I took the southbound RER D line as far as Chatelet Les Halles to connect with the RER A line for La Défense.  I did not reach La Défense until 2:40 PM.
To access the Grande Arche, you have to go under the stairway kind of on the southeast side, and then go to the admissions window.  Or you could go up the stairs and back down by the escalator.  They were giving a 33% discount off the regular admission price because of the foggy weather.  Going up is by glass elevator.  I think it was about ten to twelve stories high.  Access to the paying public is through the top two floors.  There was an art gallery plus a room with small scale models, about 1:1,000 scale, of the Grande Arche and neighboring buildings around La Défense.  There was a video about how the Grande Arche was designed and what building materials were used.  Previously the outside was designed with marble, but it had to be replaced from 2010 to 2017 with granite.  This may explain as to why I was unable in September 2011 to visit the Grande Arche. There were also some aerial photographic maps, of the area including Champs Elysées to La Défense, and you could see the top of the Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Orangerie, and also the Bastille.
The point of going to the top of the Grande Arche de La Défense, was to go to the observation level. As it was not raining, it was possible to go upstairs to see as far as the Arc de Triomphe, and maybe also the Eiffel Tower.  The fog was so bad, that I could barely see "L'AN 2000" on the Eiffel Tower. The camera could not see it properly. The Arc de Triomphe was not much better.
I went back down about 4 PM, and walked to the Bassin Takis at Place des Pyramides, located directly above the Metro Station Esplanade de La Défense.  That was the splash pool that I remember from August 1997, where the light poles had blinking lights, and they were more active during the summer. Looking southeast from there, I could see the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe.  By then the fog situation may have improved, but I had already moved on.
I went for another walk about 5 PM on the Champs Elysées and then I took a ride from Auber-Boulevard Haussmann Saint Lazare station on the RER E.  The escalator had a two level incline, with a flat section in the middle. Basically down – flat – down.  I rode one station to Magenta.  I went back to Haussmann Saint Lazare on the same line. I went into both the Printemps and Galleries de Lafayette.  I think I spent an hour in total between both places.
The rest of the evening I did some more shopping and then a burger at Quick.  I walked to the Place de la Concorde and the Grand Palais.  At Concorde there was a large ferris wheel.
I made one last ride with the M8, to Balard.  That was the western end of the line, where Créteil Préfecture was the southeast terminus. Note, it was since extended to Créteil Pointe du Lac.  I spent five minutes at Balard, from 9:30 PM to 9:35 PM.  Then I went back, and it took only 30 minutes to reach Ledru Rollin. I went to bed about 10:40 PM.
The next morning, Wednesday the 29th March, I woke up about 6:50 AM.  I had a 1 PM flight from CDG T1 to San Francisco.   I had my last breakfast at the AIJ, took a shower, packed my belongings, checked out and caught the line 86 to the Bastille metro station – so that I would not need to go up and down stairs while transferring from the M8 to the M5. I took M5 to Gare du Nord to transfer to the RER B.  By 9:15 AM I was on the RER B platform and sat on a strapontin (folding seat) close to the door.  I caught the 9:30 AM train to CDG T2.  It stopped at Sevran Beaudottes at 9:38 AM.  I arrived at the Roissypôle station at 9:50 AM.  It took maybe seven minutes for the shuttle bus to arrive to take me to CDG Aérogare 1.  The bus departed for the terminal using the access roads, and passing by the abandoned SK6000 railway that would eventually become part of the existing CDGVAL.  The bus ended just outside the southeast end of the CDGVAL station, and everyone alighted.  I entered Aérogare 1 about 10:05 AM and checked into my United flight, nonstop to San Francisco.
CDG Aérogare 1 is shaped in a circle, that just over 270 degrees can be used as airline gates.  I think seven terminals exist as satellite gates, each one with an underground travellator, after clearing the initial security gates. In the middle is a large fountain, and you can see the hamster tubes with escalators.
I was not quite ready to go through the security gates and Schengen zone passport control.  In the meantime I bought a few magazines, and a couple of music cassettes at the record store.  I remember in August 1997 and August 1998 buying cassettes from the same place.
About 11:45 AM I crossed the security gates and had my passport stamped as having exited France and the Schengen Zone.   I went on the travellator to the United Airlines terminal and waited until about 12:45 AM to board the plane.  In the meantime there was a snack bar in case I were hungry.
At 1 PM the flight was ready to board.  I took my place towards row 30 in the 777 aircraft.  I think the flight was about 11 hours long.  Since the USA at the time did not switch to daylight saving time until the first Sunday in April, the time difference between Paris and San Francisco was 10 hours.
I arrived about 2:30 PM Pacific Standard Time in San Francisco, landing at Terminal 2, having my passport checked and luggage inspected.  After that, I was legally in the USA.  I took the shuttle from the airport to the Millbrae Caltrain station, took the train to Hillsdale station, and transferred to the SamTrans bus line 252 to the intersection of Hillsdale and Edgewater Boulevard in Foster City.  It felt good to return home.  My car was still in its stall.  The next day, 30th March 2000, I returned to work.  My next overseas journey would be Tuesday 5th September to Wednesday 20th September 2000, and then to Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and a little bit of France at Bellegarde.
Well that was the last of my journey to Paris for March 2000.  I hope you enjoyed.
 Au revoir, et bonne santé!

How To Rent a Boat in Zakynthos: The Best Companies & Prices
One of the best things we did in Greece was renting a boat and if you want to rent a boat in Zakynthos, it’s one of the best islands to do so. Renting a boat in Zakynthos is easy. You don’t need a boat licence, it’s not that expensive and there are plenty of places where you can rent a boat in Zakynthos.
But if you’re not careful, you could end up with a shady company that charges you extra or gives you an unreliable boat without the proper safety equipment inside.
Renting a boat for the day and exploring hidden coves around the Greek islands was one of the most incredible experiences we’ve ever had while travelling. This is definitely one of the best things to do in Zakynthos and in fact, it’s one of the best things to do in Greece as a whole.
In this post, I’m going to break down everything you need to know when you’re planning to rent a boat in Zakynthos, from how much it costs to the best companies to go with. Whether you want to rent and drive your own boat, or you want to hire a company to drive you around the island, you’ll learn everything about renting a boat in Zakynthos in this post.
See Also: The Ultimate Guide To Planning a Trip To Greece
Best Time of Year To Rent a Boat in Zakynthos
The best time of year to rent a boat in Zakynthos is the same as the best time to visit Greece and the best time to visit Zakynthos. Our favourite time to come to Greece is in the shoulder season (March-May or September-November) when the sea is still warm enough to swim (although very cold on either end of those dates) and there are much fewer crowds.
Another great time to rent a boat in Zakynthos is in the summer. This is when the sea is at its warmest and the sun is shining the most, but it’s also when more crowds descend on the island of Zakynthos.
In the winter, most of the companies in this post will be closed down. There are some that are open year-round but in the winter months the sea can be extremely cold and you’ll have to be more mindful of the weather.
If you’re visiting in the summer months, it’s a good idea to call ahead and book your boat in advance. If you’re unable to book over the phone, then I recommend going into the rental office and paying a small deposit to rent your boat at a later date.
In July and August, you may have to pay a €20 deposit about 2 or 3 days before you plan to rent the boat. Some companies can take deposits online through their websites, but that’s not always an option.
If you’re visiting in the shoulder or off-season, you should have no problem simply calling a shop and coming to rent a boat on the same day.
Where To Rent a Boat in Zakynthos
There are plenty of different companies offering boat rentals all around the island of Zakynthos. The most popular places are down south (the first two listed below), but if you’re staying in the north then you still will have some boat rental companies near you and you won’t have to drive all the way south to pick up your rental boat.
Keri Beach (South Zakynthos)
One of the most popular areas to rent a boat in Zakynthos is near Keri Beach just east of Keri Village & The Keri Cliffs on the southeast corner of Zakynthos Island. Here you’ll a few of the most popular boat rental companies lining the beach.
Fun & Sea Boat Rentals
Unnamed Rd Keri Lake, 290 92, Greece ★ 4.8/5 (13 Reviews on Google) €120+/day + Gas
Fun and Sea Boat Rentals is just off the beach in the Keri Beach area and is a good option for renting boats. They have good reviews on Google and their boats have stereo systems. The staff here is friendly and there’s no reported “surprise extras” from customers
Big Blue Motorboat Rentals
Keri Lake Main Road, Zakinthos 290 92, Greece ★ 4.7/5 (171 Reviews on Google) €120+/day + Gas
Big Blue is one of the most popular places to rent boats on the entire island. They have a great website that displays all of their boats and prices for rentals which start at €120 per day + gas. They also easily explain to guests where you can and cannot take the boats and they charge an extra €30 for a skipper to go with you and take the boats to further areas like Navagio beach.
Calypso Boat Rentals
Keri 290 92, Greece ★ 5.0/5 (5 Reviews on Google) €100+/day + Gas
Calypso is another well-rated company on Google. They have been around for more than 20 years and has good prices on boats. It’s a local, family-run company and the prices here start at €100 / day for a boat. They also have skippers available upon request.
Laganas Beach Area (South Zakynthos)
This is another very popular place to rent a boat in the south of Zakynthos. There are plenty of companies here to choose from but the ones listed below are the highest-rated ones.
Laganas Boat Rentals
Laganas 291 00, Greece ★ 5.0/5 (32 Reviews on Google) €120+/day + Gas
Laganas Boat Rentals is one of the most popular places to rent a boat in Zakynthos for those staying around the Laganas Beach area. They have friendly service, beautiful boats and no hidden fees.
Blue Cave Boat Rental
Laganas 290 92, Greece ★ 5.0/5 (2 Reviews on Google) €120+/day + Gas
This place is located towards the southern end of Laganas beach and has some nice boats. They are open from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm every day of the week including Sundays and they have decent prices on boat rentals.
Koroni (North Zakynthos)
Once you rent a boat in Zakynthos, you’re going to want to rent one again! A good idea is to rent a boat for one day in the south, using one of the companies above, then rent a boat for another day in the north. That way, even if you don’t pay extra for an accompanying skipper, you can see both sides of the island.
Blue Cave Boat Rental
Μικρό Νησί 290 91, Greece ★ 4.6/5 (40 Reviews on Google) €140+/day + Gas
If you’re in the north of the island around the town of Koroni then this is your best option. The owner here will give you a good briefing of where you can and cannot go and you’ll get some safety briefings as well. Prices are a little higher here but it’s a good option for the north end of the island.
The Cost of Renting a Boat in Zakynthos
As you can see from the above-listed companies, the average cost of renting a boat in Zakynthos is between €100 – €140 per day.
If you’re visiting during the shoulder season, consider calling a few companies and bargaining for a good price. We did this on the island of Corfu in May and because there weren’t too many tourists and they had boats just sitting parked, we were able to get our boat for €80 for the day plus gas.
Our Rental Boat in Corfu
If you’re coming in the high-season then expect to pay high season prices. Some boat companies jack up their prices by 20-30% during this time. Don’t expect to bargain in July and August.
All rental boats will charge extra for gas. It’s worth asking the boat company how much a full tank of gas will cost before you agree to rent with them. That way there’s less chance of them trying to rip you off for extra gas charges at the end of the day.
The best companies will show you on the gas meter how much a quarter, half and full tank of gas will cost you, then when you drop off the boat they’ll simply look at the gauge and charge you accordingly.
Some companies don’t have gas gauges on their boats and they charge tourists whatever they choose. Of all of the reviews for boat rental companies in Zakynthos and the rest of Greece, this is the biggest gripe that travellers have.
A few questions before you agree can help ensure that you won’t be ripped off by the company.
Do You Need a Boat License To Rent a Boat in Zakynthos?
No. You do not need a boat licence to rent a boat in Zakynthos or in most islands in Greece. This may change with regulations in the coming years, but as long as tourists abide by the limitations of the boats and where they can be taken, for now you can rent a boat in Zakynthos without a boat license.
Boats are easy to drive and really not that dangerous, plus the owner of the boat rental shop should give you a long and useful briefing on the safety of the boat (including where the fire extinguisher is, life jackets etc.) as well as where you can and cannot take the boat.
Listen carefully to this briefing and make sure you understand it well. Also, abide by the limitations of the boat. Some crazy storms can quickly sweep into Zakynthos without warning. There’s a reason these rules are in place.
Even the experienced captains with years of boating experience in these seas won’t take boats to further places like Navagio Beach during a storm. These captains know how to read the weather in this area. You don’t. Simply stay within the boundaries laid out by the boat rental company and you’ll be fine.
Do You Need To Hire a Skipper To Come With You?
Technically you do not need a skipper to come with you when renting a boat in Zakynthos or most islands in Greece. Whether you’re renting the boat in the north or east of the island, there will be designated distances and areas that you’ll be allowed to take the boat by yourself.
If you’re going to more dangerous areas or places where you’ll need to exit the headlands and go into the open Sea, you’ll need to bring a skipper with you.
If you have no prior experience driving a boat, consider hiring a skipper to come with you for the day. The cost of a skipper starts at around €30 per day.
Where Can You Take Your Rental Boat?
Typically you will be able to take your rental boat within a 10 – 20-kilometre area along the coast from where you rent it. The boat companies will tell you exactly where you can and cannot go.
This will ensure that you’re not going out of the area where it is safe to take the boat.
The boat companies have these limitations for your own safety. Storms can be very dangerous in Zakynthos so as I mentioned earlier, be sure to stay within the recommended boundaries.
Zakynthos has some of the best beaches in Greece so simply head out and explore the lesser-visited coves and find your own little slice of Ionian paradise.
How To Rent a Boat in Zakynthos Safely
Renting a boat in Zakynthos is very safe. The companies here generally try to ensure that the boats are equipped with all the proper safety equipment and that the tourists who rent them come back with the boats and themselves in one piece. Here are a few tips to rent a boat in Zakynthos safely:
Stay Within The Recommended Boundaries
I’ve said it enough times in this post that I’m sure it’s a given by now. Stay within the boundaries set forth by the boat rental companies. A good idea is to get the Google Maps app and download the map of Zakynthos to use offline. Then have the boat company create a flag on the map of the furthest distance you should go east, west, north, south etc.
Don’t Drive The Boat At Night
You should be heading back to the beach to return your boat long before the sun starts to set. The boat company will give you a curfew and you should abide by it. Not all boats are even equipped with lights and if you can’t see the water when you’re driving at night, you could crash the boat or injure someone swimming.
Have A Mobile Phone With Service
When you’re in the boat within 500 meters or so to shore, you should have cell phone service. Make sure you have a phone with you that is connected to 4G so that you can contact the shore in case of an emergency.
Check The Boat For Safety Equipment
Every boat should have a fire extinguisher, ores, a radio and enough life jackets for everyone onboard. Check the boat over before taking off and make sure that the owner of the boat gives you a detailed safety briefing before you leave.
Hire a Skipper If You’re a New Captain
When in doubt, hire a skipper. It’s a blast having your own boat for sure, but if you don’t have any prior experience driving a boat, then it’s worth the €30-€50 per day to hire a skipper to come with you.
Taking a Rental Boat To Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Cove)
Pretty much every boat rental company on the island will require that you take a skipper with you if you plan to go to Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Cove). There’s a good reason for this.
The beach is called Shipwreck Cove because there’s a massive Freightliner that crashed here during a storm. The storms in the Ionian are no joke and can come without warning.
If you plan to visit Navagio Beach in your rental boat, you should either hire a skipper or go as part of a tour.
Taking a Rental Boat to The Blue Caves Zakynthos
Some boat rental companies in the north of the island will allow you to take your boat rental to The Blue Caves. These are in a more secluded cove that’s easier to get to than Navagio Beach. Be sure to ask your boat rental company if it’s okay to go to The Blue Caves before renting the boat. When in doubt, go as part of a tour.
Can You Take a Rental Boat Between Islands?
Unless you’re hiring a yacht or sailboat, you won’t be allowed to take your rental boat between islands. Most of the boats that you’ll be renting will be between 25-70 horsepower and simply aren’t equipped to go between the islands of Greece.
Stick to ferries to get you between islands and simply use your rental boat to cruise up and down the coast of Zakynthos, staying close to the shore and enjoying the many secluded coves and hidden bays around the island.
Renting a Boat in Zakynthos With a Driver
If you’re worried about renting a boat in Zakynthos, then you can simply hire one with a driver. This is a more luxurious experience. You can sit back, relax and enjoy some drinks while someone else drives you around the island.
We did this in Zakynthos with Luxury Island Cruises and we can highly recommend it. Depending on the weather they can take you to all the best sites around the island including Navagio Beach and The Blue Caves.
Should You Rent a Boat in Zakynthos?
Renting a boat is probably the single most fun thing you can do in all of Greece. It’s a good way to get away from the crowds during the high season because you can pull your boat into hidden coves, anchor down and just chill for a while.
There are so many great places that you can take a boat in Zakynthos and there are enough trustworthy and reputable companies that you can do so with the confidence of knowing that the quality of the boat and the safety of you and your passengers is almost guaranteed.
I hope this post helped you to better understand how to rent a boat in Zakynthos. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment down below.

I Photographed Volcano Erupting Under The Milky Way In Guatemala
As a landscape photographer I’ve always been intrigued with nature. A few weeks ago I went to Guatemala to try and shoot the eruption of Fuego, an active volcano on the edge of a little town called Antigua Guatemala. I wanted to not only shoot the erupting volcano, but align the milky way at night with it to create something unique.
I planned everything carefully weeks before making my trip using all the tools that I had at my disposal. First of all I used Photopills to plan the position of the milky way. Then I used the tools I found online to ‘get to know’ the volcano by observing scopes, recent activity logs and webcams. Last I called the local weather station when I finally arrived in Guatemala multiple times to get a recommendation about the weather up there above 3000m. When clear skies were predicted in combination with lots of activity i made my move to try my luck.
Needed ingredients: 1) The right date for the milky way to rise next to the Fuego volcano, seen from the Acatenango volcano. This would be around the end of March; 2) A clear night with no clouds; 3) Close to new moon for good visibility of the stars; 4) Most importantly: luck to get good lava eruptions with the right timing. I say right timing because I figured it would be extremely difficult to get both the stars and the lava properly exposed in one exposure because of the huge contrast difference. To get the perfect shot, I would have to shoot during late blue hour at sunset or early blue hour at sunrise.
After a very tough steep hike I found myself on the Acatenango volcano the next day. I arrived before sunset. It was very cloudy and I couldn’t even see the Fuego next to it. However, clouds were moving fast and I knew it was probably going to clear up. It did. When I saw it erupting up close combined with the powerful sound I was just paralysed. This was amazing. It was literally one of the most impressive things I had ever seen in nature.
The final shots you see here are a result of careful planning combined with a bit of luck!
