Director’s statement
Darkness refers to what is not seen, what society does not want to know or see, in this case, the violence and hate crimes against women in México and Latin America.
The story of Marina started as an inspiration in my job as a video editor for AJ+ Spanish (Aljazeera), in México City. I was editing testimonials about victims of violence, mothers in despair for the loss of their daughters, disappeared people. This film comes from an emotional response to these stories.
However, I believe that the importance of these testimonials is to obtain justice, not to make fiction. Besides, it was not, nor is it my role as a man director / writer to try to tell the experience of a woman, much less that of a survivor. But as an artist I wanted to get out of me this need, to try to find something in the face of injustice, perhaps at least a little hope.
That is why I made rules for myself and my narrative. The first: not to show graphic violence, specifically from a man to a woman. Much less to make an actress go through such a process. The second: trying to raise my voice in third person. (Cinema, fiction, have this capacity). And finally: Say no to realism. Try to turn down the narrative that surrounds the Mexican myth and tragedy, that of a torn human condition. This is how this movie came about.
Luckily when I finished writing the script I got the opportunity to meet Ixchel Flores Machorro, who plays Marina. Ixchel's strength and vitality were present from the first moment. Together we rethink Marina's character and she embraced her, melting her personality and her own struggle, diving into the depths of the darkness.
