I want to know the science behind this and why I have two different stages of grape gum as it loses both color and flavor. Gross. I'm not mad about the blue (even though I'd go brighter), and I could probably handle that terra cotta/adobe color if there was something else that was fun. I mean for fuck's sake, where's my red? My bright pink? Orange? Leaf green? Where's the rainbow that is my sparkling personality? 🤣

favourite colour: any shade of blue and purple, black, deep/blood red

favourite food: I have an affinity for junk food (I love all the foods that are terrible for me) but especially pizza, fries, Cheetos puffs, pumpkin donuts, and Entenmann’s powdered donuts and chocolate frosted Pop’ems (I think I might have the least refined palate ever😁)

song stuck in your head: The Game Is Over by Evanescence and Walking in the Snow by Run The Jewels (I saw them both in concert recently and I haven’t been able to get these songs out of my head)

time: 5:53PM (though it’ll probably be later once I actually finish this)

dream trip: For some reason I’ve always wanted to go to France though my brother keeps wanting me to go to Tokyo with him (he went a few years ago and thinks I would love it) and I’m slowly coming around to the idea. If I were to stay in my own country I think that Las Vegas sounds fun and there’s just so much there to do and try (though not all of it’s good🙈)

last book I read: Children of the New World by Alexander Weinstein (I keep meaning to move on to his second book but I just never get to it)

last book I enjoyed reading: I definitely enjoyed reading Children of the New World and while I liked some of the short stories more then others, overall the theme of the book was so relevant and well portrayed and every story had at least one line or section that made me go “wow” and just fall in love

last book I hated reading: Adolf in Wonderland by Carlton Mellick III. I read this years ago but this is (unfortunately) always my go to choice for a book I hated reading. It was my first foray into bizarro fiction and between the title and the plot summary I had such high expectations and really thought that this book would be different and interesting. Ultimately there was no plot and it was weird just for the sake of being weird and I was so let down and don’t even think I finished it

bonus questions:

favourite thing to cook/bake: I used to bake a lot more when I had more free time but I’ll still occasionally make these macadamia nut macaroons (with coconut and Saltine crackers drizzled in chocolate) that I love (I’ll sometimes end up eating the batter as I’m spooning it into the baking trays🙈) and that seem to be a favorite of my friends and family

favourite craft to do in my free time: Unfortunately I don’t participate in any kind of crafting

most niche dislike: I spent so long trying to come up with a good answer for this question and the best I answer I could come up with (and it’s still awful and not really niche) is fruit snacks (Welch’s if I had to narrow it down but honestly I despise any and all brands). I’m thinking it’s because I’ve had to eat them so much throughout my life (whenever my blood sugar got low) so now they just taste so cloyingly sweet and gross to me that I can hardly eat them (I still keep them around but found other things to help deal with my lows)

opinion(s) on circuses: Yes for a Cirque du Soleil type situation with stunts and acrobatics (though even then I worry that the performers will get hurt even though it’s so cool to see) but a very strong no to typical circuses since I know the animals get treated horribly

do you have a sense of direction: In terms of my career surprisingly yes (though it’s recent and it might very well change), in terms of my personal life not so much, and in terms of a legitimate sense of direction 1000% no (I’ll be in a car and start confusing left and right if I’m driving to a place I’ve never been before🙈)

Hello V I have a food question and I thought more people would benefit from this 😊: I'm meal prepping and I can't find the slaw recipe you gave me, so this is me asking for it (or anything else yummy you want to share 💖)

Oooh, okay!! Well the TL;DR of it all is multiple kinds of shredded cabbage, fat, acid, salt, and a generous amount of seasoning, tossed vigorously. Then top with something crunchy. 

Here’s the full recipe, which we’ll call ‘Auntie Em’s Shredded Slaw:’

Always start with at least 2 kinds of cabbage, like white and purple, cut thinly on a mandolin, or shredded into thin strips with a knife. Usually at least a few other cruciferous veggies too, like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, etc, also cut small.

Add some other crunchy veggies: shredded or matchstick-cut carrots, radishes,  celery, jicama, beets, whatever you’ve got. Bonus points if it makes things colorful.

Add little oil/fat

Add whatever vinegar or acid goes with the rest of the meal (IE balsamic, red wine, apple cider, or rice vinegar, harissa, or lemon/lime juice, even hot sauce)

Optional: If you want a creamy coleslaw, add a spoonful or two of Greek yogurt or sour cream

Season LIBERALLY, with whatever spices or fresh herbs go with the meal. Always include salt, pepper, a little chili powder, and garlic & onion powders, but everything is optional. 

STIR AGGRESSIVELY UNTIL THE LIQUIDS AND SPICES HAVE EMULSIFIED AND COATED THE VEGGIES. TASTE AS YOU GO AND ADD SEASONING IF NECESSARY.

(Examples: an Italian meal might mean: olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, fresh basil, fresh parsley, fresh minced garlic, a few spoonfuls of pesto, dried oregano or rosemary, etc. A stir-fry might get peanut oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, fresh Thai basil, green onions, cilantro/coriander leaves, star anise, cloves, etc. Mexican food might get lime juice, fresh cilantro, cumin, cayenne, ancho, chipotle, hot sauce or Tajin.)

Also optional: add-ins like tomatoes, olives, peppers, artichoke hearts, capers, cucumbers: things that are juicy or more delicate. They get mixed in now, more gently.

Finish by sprinkling something crunchy on top: toasted nuts or seeds, croutons, fried noodles/onions, etc. Et voila. Auntie Em’s Shredded Slaw.

(Which stores brilliantly, btw, because the flavors only get better as they all marinate together and because the base is hearty and crunchy things, it doesn’t get soggy and gross like most leftover salad.)

One more tip: you can do a lot of veggie prep ahead of times and then just store the already-cut ones in your vegetable bin to make it go even faster.

Do you have a favorite holiday movie? (Whatever you like to watch around the holiday counts, there doesn't need to have menorahs or trees in it) what about a favorite cookie around this time of the year? (Or confectionary/treat if you're not big on making cookies during the holidays)

Okay so the answer to #1, without question, is The Muppet Christmas Carol, which I can say without a doubt is not only charming and delightful and funny and touching, but also hands-down the best adaptation of A Christmas Carol ever made. (FIGHT ME!) The casting? Impeccable. Music? A triumph. Acting? Superb. If nothing else, the way Michael Caine interacts with the Muppets is AMAZING, especially in the super dramatic moments.

For #2, I'm going to once again rave about the seven-layer cookie aka rainbow cookie, which is more like a petit four than a cookie, and not only beautiful and fucking delicious, but also one of the only fussy, time-consuming baking projects that is WELL WORTH all the effort. It's colorful layers of dense marzipan cake, jam, and covered in dark chocolate. Incredible.

Here's the recipe my family uses, and the only change we make is to use raspberry jam instead of apricot based on personal preference.

If you were a video game character, what would your catchphrase be? what kind of video game would you be part of?

Hi baby!! 😘This is one of those times where I feel my answer is not going to possibly live up to how brilliant and creative the question is  due to the fact that I just really don’t play video games, but I’ll do my best. 💖✨

So, the first thing that comes to mind is some kind of “let’s take down the corrupt system” character. Basically a cross between Vanellope from Wreck-It Ralph, Punky Brewster, and Huey Freeman from The Boondocks. A sassy, precocious child who Knows Too Much and wants to fight back. (Huey is in there because I would probably be more political and revolutionary-minded than the other two, even though they are more aesthetically accurate to my inner child, lol. 😜)

The game itself would probably be some kind of choose your own adventure or RP/story game. Where you’re trying to go undercover to take down the corrupt government or malicious corporate monopolies or something. When you defeat levels, you get to celebrate with dance parties and unlock karaoke tracks.  

Catchphrases are auto-generated from Madonna lyrics and include but are not limited to:

Cheerleader (6 years old. This is on the list because I told my feminist mother I wanted to be a cheerleader, and she was prepared to swallow her rage about it and let me do what I wanted. So she went, “Okay…what team do you want to cheer for?” And I was like “Team? Huh?” And that is when she realized to her delight that I had no idea cheerleaders were there to support athletes, I just liked the skirts. So she changed her question to “What color cheer costume do you want?” And I said, “Pink and Purple.” She sewed me an absolutely stunning pink and purple corduroy cheer skirt (and made pom-poms and a lovely top) that I continued to wear for like 3 years.) 

Sally Bowles, mid abortion (adult. It was basically a run-of-the-mill Liza as Sally costume with the vest and the bowler hat, etc, but then I smeared a bunch of blood on my thighs and dangled a plastic fetus purchased from a website called "Christian Dollar Store" from my hot pants by rubber bands. I also wore tap shoes and drove everyone nuts, lol)

Guess who almost forgot it was sunday bc her perception of time got messed up with the myriad of Halloween questions. I've just moved to a new place and I'm drowning in lists of lists to do because I am incredibly forgetful and scatterbrained but I have an insatiable love for crossing things on a list. Any fun/interesting stories of a time you've had to move to a new place? Where do you lean in the 'i like to plan things' vs 'lets play it by ears' spectrum?

I’ve had a lot of chaotic moving experiences, but recently I was watching an episode of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills where several of the women were dropping their kids off at college for the first time and helping them get set up and crying cause they’d miss them, and it made me think about how my own mother didn’t come help me move in when I went to school (the first time, when I was 18) because she had a sore throat that morning. Lol. (Don’t worry, it wasn’t traumatic, my dad and bro were there.) But it might be something to bring up during the holidays and maybe score some cash, hehe. 

I am a play-it-by-ear person 100%. I mean in theory I like to plan but I never actually do. Once, I waited to long to find an apartment when my lease was ending and then the only available move-in date didn’t quite line up and it led to me being homeless for the better part of a week in between apartments. (Well, Jewel-homeless; I slept in my car on the set of a movie I was working on. The irony was that the set was a house and I could just have slept inside, but the art director told me that it already felt “a little too crowded” and instead of being like “lady, it’s 2 am and I have nowhere else to go and my call time tomorrow is 3 hours before you—I’m sleeping on the sofa, deal with it,” I just slept in my car like an idiot. 🙈

Anyway I have a sweater that says “WINGING IT” across the front so I guess I’ve accepted this life. 😂🤣🌈

Do you decorate your house/living space for Halloween?

Well, I purchase the decorations, but it is the job of whoever I live with to actually put them up. Because I do love Halloween, but I'm also insanely lazy when it comes to decorations. (I've literally had pictures for the wall that didn't get hung for multiple years because getting out the hammer was just Too Much.) 🦇

(My favorite Halloween decorations are those giant cobweb things that you can put in doorways to freak people out in the middle of the night. Those I can manage myself, because if you just hook it around things already on the wall, you don't need any tools or tape.)

If we do manage to get anything up, which doesn't happen every year, I most likely leave it there though Christmas.

Horror movie time! Do you like them? Are you a thriller person or a gore person? Any favorite villain? What horror movie do you think is over hyped? What horror movie do you like the most? I’m not a horror movie person in general, mostly because I think I don't really get scared. But I do have some horror/thriller movies that I love because I just feel like they transcend the genre: (list after the jump)

Psychological thrillers are way more interesting to me than gore/slasher flicks. Jumpscares do nothing for me. Twist endings are cool with 2 caveats:

The movie has to be good without it, so that if you know the twist ahead of time or figure it out, it doesn’t ruin the entire thing (I’M LOOKING AT YOU, M. NIGHT!!!)

It shouldn't be predictable

Overrated:

Halloween - My brother INSISTED that it was objectively good and totally transcended the genre, like the ones above. He was WRONG. Terrible fucking acting, including from Ms. Jamie Lee - who I generally find to be a great actor, so maybe it was really just terrible directing.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - I have never been simultaneously BORED and ANNOYED the way this movie made me, so I guess that's an accomplishment. But honestly, I think the entire last HALF of this movie is that one bitch shrieking at the top of her lungs. And me just sitting there going "kill her, kill her, kill her..."

Paranormal Activity - Boring. I saw it (honestly maybe not the first one?) in the theatre with my friend, and the only entertaining part was these two girls near us who kept screaming and yelling at the screen. Which was really bothering my friend. Needless to say, I ditched him to have drinks with those girls after.

The Blair Witch Project - Probably no one cares anymore but when this came out, everyone I knew was OBSESSED and I lost interest like 10 minutes in. GET A TRIPOD, LADS.

The Sixth Sense - Knew he was dead in the first scene, after that it was super unimpressive.

Scream - Meh. Not funny enough to be a comedy or good enough to take seriously.

what do you think are the most redeeming qualities about human beings? anything you've seen lately that reminds you of said redeeming qualities? and how have you been kind to yourself this week?

Omg why has this taken me so long to get to besides the 5 migraines and 3 seminars and 2 lectures I’ve had since you asked it and did I just answer my own question? ANYWAY! I love this question! So! 

*cracks knuckles* 

Let’s get down to business, shall we?

I think the best thing about humans is our ability to work together. A lot of great qualities fall under this umbrella: empathy, kindness, communication/language, storytelling/creative expression/the arts, teamwork, community, family, friendship, camaraderie, loyalty, affection, laughter, humor, celebration, joy. 

I’m gonna shout out my boy Rutger Bregman, who wrote an amazing book called “Humankind: a Hopeful History.” It’s a really beautiful read about how kindness is really the thing that separates us from other animals and why all the cynical takes about selfishness and cruelty and people making cold self-interested financial decisions are just flat-out wrong. (It’s not 100% of a Pollyanna take, it does also explain how these lovely qualities can be negative and as well, and explain things like war and genocide and slavery and how they fit into this philosophical framework.) 

Another way that I see these qualities is just like, in my daily interactions with people. Like the other day, I got food delivered, and the app I use often does this thing where it sends the delivery people to a random address around the corner and down half a block (which is a similar number but different street). So usually if I don’t see the person at my building, I walk around the corner to the other building and check. And this time, the guy figured out he was in the wrong place and came rushing over and was super apologetic and when he handed me the food, he also held the door open for me so I could get back inside more easily. What a treasure. 

Kind to myself…um, getting enough rest is a big one for me, even when I have insomnia. And like, taking time to do things I love like writing or going on longer walks with the dog. Planning social time into my schedule so that it’s not a last-minute thing. Allowing myself extra time to do schoolwork, get ready in the morning or take public transit so that I’m not stressed. Eating food that makes me feel good.
